I needed to hear this. Black tax can be overwhelming. One can spend sleepless nights wondering whether they can ever move forward financially with family at stake.
This reminds me of the saying do not light yourself on fire to provide others with warmth. I am glad that there are finally some practical ideas on how to navigate black tax.
I agree with you Susan. This is one of the most overlooked areas in personal finance because its overshadowed by complains and yet we never take time to resolve it. One of the great ideas that you spoke about is having an emergency fund for the parents. This will go a long way to sort out the small but persistence emergency calls. Second, its good to empower them by finding an income generating source for them that will also keep them busy.
GREAT talk.... Unfortunately, some family are just looking to milk anyone willing to help. I toldmy aunt to start a small business and I will fund it. She scammed me of $1000. She squandered the money on a new TV and other electronics. Now shes back struggling and iv cut her off.
This one you nailed it on the head 👉"Black tax" majority of parents have this weird expectations from their kids to do this and that just because they raised you. I mean it's ok to appreciate them however it's not ok to be responsible for their entire day to day bills👏👏 hope some are taking notes from here
...I liked the the part, where you ask yourself, if I were to die today/unreachable, would my dependants find an alternative way of sorting themselves out. food work Suzzie
Being the only male child in a family makes it very hard to evade black tax. I feel like, or rather they make me, feel like i birthed them all plus parents
Thanks for this insightful and eloquently delivered tutorials about black tax. I have seven step silblings . I dropped out of my masters program to take care of two silblings one from my mother's side and the other silbling from my father side in the university since my parents were divorce and remarried. One graduated successfully and the other drop out after second year. The one who graduated and gainfully employed refused to help me take care of our mother because she want to established herself first and doesn't want to be my mother's pension plan.
Very true indeed. We deeply have the problem of discussing finances as Africans. We need to change this patters, its more harmful to us in the current world
I've been watching a lot of videos on this topic lately and I have to say, this is preaching to the choir. These parents, family members and friends should watch these videos themselves (they will have to be sent these videos anonymously, of course 😉).
Offer them capital, if they don't want to work then you know they aren't looking for help but to leech you until you run dry. Takers won't put a limit, it's a giver who has to - Someone.
from Namibia, am constant watching your youtube videos and am getting inspired. i know-nothing about investing, when you to invest and am basically interested in passive investment do u need to go to the local banks or financial institutions to get one ro what is the procedure to follow for the person who never done investing before pls help
😂😂😂😂😂 bless your heart 😅 African parents that can’t wait to hang up their boots and retire at the sweet age of 40 😂 they want to relax and have you take over responsibilities for your siblings. The best thing is not to start it in the first place 😂😂😂😂😂 black tax will finish you 😅
Don’t take care of them.. they should have thought of their retirement while they have the opportunity.. we don’t owe anything to our parents because they gave birth to us. Nope
We also need to work hard so as not to turn out like our parents!
