Very informative and well thought through ideas. I loved the entire presentation.
🤔 Having said that, I have my doubts regarding the origin of "black tax". As I understand it, the practice in and of itself can be found among many (if not most of) non-Western cultures where communities accomplish certain things together. Our collective 'weakness', when compounded, becomes a sort of strength.
It began with villages coming together to send one of their own to university. The one who was fortunate to have been sponsored by the community would then have the responsibility to serve their community, mostly by supporting some of them through school.
Couple that with the fact that even before the dawn of formal education, the elder siblings had the responsibility of helping to raise the younger ones. With time, part of that responsibility included helping them through school.
This was practiced by our grandparents at the dawn of Western education in Africa, way before apartheid was a thing. As such, while we might posit that the term 'black tax' may have originated in South Africa, the concept and practice far outdates it.
Finally, I imagine that the term 'black tax' has a negative connotation to it. It was not coined by the blacks and those who did meant it as a derogatory term. As such, I wouldn't use it often. I wonder if there's a more honorable term that could take its place?
Thanks, again, for the great video.
