As a hobby DJ doing a few house parties a year these are things I suggest: 1. If you've never DJed before, start with buying just a dj controller (like DDJ-400 or FLX4). If you already own any type of speakers, use those and find good quality sources to rip. This is to check if you truely like DJing or if it's just one of those sort term things you'll waste way too much money on. 2. If you like it, buy better speakers (preferably studio monitors). You can either upgrade your song quality by getting a subscription to a DJ pool, or you buy audio enhancing/analyzing software like Platinum Notes 4 and Mixed in Key (this is what I did). Remember to use good quality rip sources otherwise take a subscription. 3. If you enjoy DJing even more now and you want to try small parties/venues, decide whether you want to use the same speakers or upgrade to PA speakers (monitors are better for close range small groups and PA to really go LOUD!). I upgraded to a big PA and subwoofer combo for parties. I also bought a bluetooth adapter in case I don't want to DJ. Even if you're a bit of an audiophile, you'll barely hear the difference between quality rips and the official sources on low to medium end speakers. And yes of course, a club sound setup changes the game. A one-time purchase of audio enhancing software in combination with being able to rip anything on the internet was worth way more to me than getting a DJ pool subscription that does not include everything I search for. This is just from my own experience but consider the choices. Best of luck😁

Don't worry, the DDJ-400 is still an amazing entry-level controller. The only things you can do on this that you can't on the DDJ-400 are unique anyway and you can't use the smart features on any other equipment, so if your end goal is to play on CDJs and rocking clubs then you wouldn't want to get used to the new features on this controller as they can't be applied on any other setup.
I started off my DJing hobby over two decades ago with Pioneer CDJ-500S CD decks and DJM-300 mixer (because I had a ton of CD singles). I soon transferred fully to vinyl on a pair of Technics 1210s (because it was hard to find full length mixes of many tracks, I did keep the same mixer). Even though the DJM-300 had BPM counters on them, I never used them, I learned to mix the old school way - by ear, I prefer it. Managed to play a few bars (even had a Friday night "residency" at one for a while) the local club a few times and a ton of house parties and weddings. I got a job in America so had to leave all my DJ equipment and records behind (would have cost FAR too much to ship it all). Works also great with the djay pro android version ( purchased app ). The only downside is that when someone calls or app you it disturbs the mixing session. First thing you gonna have to do is connecting it to windows on your pc in order to get it working and update the firmware if its need to. I use Google pixel 7 and it works pretty proper. @@Crossfader - "Stood the test of time" I mean, let's be real though, the DDJ-400 was released in June of 2018 and was produced by Pioneer up until January 2021...so it was in production for 2 1/2 years. It is a great controller but it really isn't that old.
I really love this review because it’s honest and forthcoming with information that you usually don’t find out until after you buy the controller I think that the difference between software is was deliberate but I am hoping they change that but that being said I do think this is a pretty good controller excellent for that price range I just would have liked to have seen them try it with Serato pro
I just got the Hercules Inpulse 500 last month, really fun but I feel like it's worth switching to this so I have access to rekordbox and some of the other features like keyboard mode..
stupid question maybe...and maybe the wrong place but i got a ddj-flx4 using it with rekordbox on ipad....how do i connect them, as just over ipad it sucks power off....do i need an adapter for the power???
💁🏼♂ one thing I don't really get is this: is the controller doing the effects processing? or is it all in the app / software running on the computer? Like the smart crossfader... that's not happening on the device itself right. So why is that some kind of exclusive thing to this controller?
I wish some of these beginner consoles would let you plug in vinyl decks. Love some of these new features but without the decks input it's a deal breaker for me. The price is amazing though for all the features.
I've noticed something from the 400 to the FLX4, though this may not be too worrisome but something that stood out to me personally 1, The redesigned FX area improves workflow for those uses FX a lot. Moving the beat-size selector closer to dry/wet knob is going to be more pleasant. Too bad the FX select is still a button, and not an endless encoder. Which would make FX selection so much easier. 2, About the FX channel selector, noticed it now say "1, 2, 1&2". This is different from the DDJ-400 where it's "1, 2, MASTER". It might be pedantic, but there is a difference in "FX on deck 1 & 2" or "FX on MASTER channel". The latter also include ALL DECKS, plus the SAMPLER DECKS. The former is literally only deck 1 and 2. 3, Headphone controls are closer to the channel fader, which is also a nice touch for workflow. 4, For someone that wasn't too impressed with MergeFX: The Smart CFX button is almost begging to be MIDI remapped to CFX Select Next and CFX Select Prev. Smart CFX is very much a cousin of MergeFX. You can achieve similar (or better) results with extra MIDI controllers that has faders, knobs, encoders. I think personally it's at least not as intrusive or outstanding to be like the FLX6 which I don't like honestly but the FLX4 has a much better implementation. 5, I wonder or that mic volume knob can be MIDI remapped for CFXSubParameter. Which is still at feature very much missing on the entry level controllers. 6, No phantom power for the mic input makes the whole mic feature just so there is the ability to. Also is the mic input send to a separate channel in the audio interface or will it be mixed down to a stereo channel before going out the USB interface? So in comparison, the DDJ-400 was a 2x4 interface (2 ins, 4 outs), is the FLX4 also 2x4 or a 3x4? 7, The RCA connectors looking bit sturdier on the FLX4 but more inputs on the FLX6 but only unbalanced outs. 8, Glad they moved the USB connector away from the RCA outputs: now you can use any L-shape USB connectors with the unit. Which was a problem with the aftermarket USB DJ cables. 9, No more markers on the crossfader is a bit of shame, but I'll admit it does look cleaner this way. But they were somewhat useful when I just started on learning how to do cut techniques with the crossfader and probably some people will find it helpful too. 10, On the DDJ-400 there were lots of noise in the unit, both the headphone cue output as well the rear RCA. I wonder or the FLX4 is doing any better at managing noise level. Hopefully it does a better job at it.
I like how he starts saying that this is a great entry controller for people agnostic of their software- then only lists recordbox and Serato as if it’s the entire universe. There’s dozens of us on VDJ and Traktor! Dozens…! But in all seriousness this looks like a cool controller.
I like this very very much. I already own ddj-400. Now my question is I do not pay for the rekordbox monthly subscription. Will this still work without paying the subscription?
I think the Rev 1 is better. You have the option for deck 3 & 4 also the effects are easier to use imho..but mine went belly up after 4 months though. For a few hundred dollars it should last a few years at least.
It was very fun to use but some of the functions crashed on rekcord box Recording came out very low but sounded very loud in headphones easy to mix with its not bluetooth and works only by connecting to android system not to Mac you have to buy an extra cable for that.
Wow, this controller sounds absolutely amazing! Can someone please elaborate on the Bluetooth from phone function? Would I only get to integrate downloads or would it work for streaming too?
Hi, the Bluetooth function is apparently just for MIDI controls (MIDI over Bluetooth LE), to make the DJ controller send controls to the App in the smartphone without connecting the controller to the smartphone, in the same way as DDJ-200 controls djay and WeDJ apps in the smartphone. So the smartphone DJ app mixes - audio tracks stored in the smartphone - and streamed tracks from Soundcloud, Tiday, Beatport & Beatsource, and the controller is a bluetooth remote control, but does not interfere with what you stream or what you download.
All the features are really cool and I can see how they can help however is there an option to turn all the features off and really learn bare bones manually yourself ? If there is option for both this is great option , either way I already pre ordered haha
You can simply choose to not use the features. If you don't turn them on with the buttons then they won't be active. Just as we teach in our courses, tools such as sync are great too but don't learn to DJ with them otherwise you will get stuck using them and it doesn't always work. You need to be able to take control when things don't quite go to plan or sound quite right.
I have this device, I use it with an amplifier. The system cuts off the sound after 3-4 tracks, I changed the amplifier but the sound cuts out again. why doing this?
Any chance of you guys doing an updated video for this controller with serato DJ pro and the free version of rekordbox? I’ve already got DJ pro coming from a basic numark controller and I’m not too keen on paying monthly on rekordbox just to be able to record my sets 👎🏻
Hi, question please . At home I have about 15000 tracks on my QNAP Nas drive running to my hifi which I control with an app on my iPad & iPhone. Can I get the new FLX4 to see the tracks so I can play them from the Nas drive? They are all in wav & flac. Cheers great video 👍🏆
Great overview, thanks. I can't for the life of me work out how to record my sets using a Zoom recorder (h4essentials). I've tried: > Using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the headphone port on my Mac, to the “Line In” on the Zoom recorder. No signal detected. (I know the headphone port is enabled and working, because I’m using it to route through an amplifier too). >Using a usb-c cable from my Mac to the Zoom and setting the Zoom for Audio I/F and REC. (Zoom confirms “USB Data Okay", but no signal is detected. (I have not tried RCA outputs from the ‘Master’ output on the FLX4 (to TRS inputs on the Zoom) because I am using the ‘Master’ output on the FLX4 to my powered monitors). What am I missing? Any help appreciated - thank you.
I don't know if anyone will see this since this video is from last year but I have a couple questions. Can I use an iPad with Rekordbox? How does the controller know to just give me access to Rekordbox? What extra pieces should I buy with it?
good evening, very nice video, but I have a problem, I want to buy the pioneer dj ddj flx-4 and I don't know what cables to buy and what usbs to connect it to my MacBook ,in general I can't find any video talking about cables or how we connect it all together
It has a USB-C connector so you just need a regular USB port or (preferably) a USB-C port on your MacBook. You can connect with a USB-C to USB-C cable or a USB-C to regular usb cable. The USB-C port handles power and data, with a separate port for only power. The controller has RCA outputs for speakers, but if you are using rekordbox you can output sound to your computer speakers or speakers connected to you computer
Yeah, true point. I suppose it comes down to wether you really want to stick with Serato or not and wether the upgrade is worth it. Maybe you would upgrade your controller to something bigger that unlocks Serato DJ Pro instead.
Is a better to get the ddj 1000srt even if you are beginner in order to get as close to professional djing without having to buy another controller? Or is this one close enough that you will be able to transition to professional djing without having to upgrade?
I have a great idea for the next ddj flx doing 2 channels dj controller that have the ability to control in 2 channels more with the effects of the pioneer djm 900 mixer and smart mixer lead and the ability to connecting to Serato and Rekordbox and I think that this is very good idea for a powerful dj controller than ddj rr and the sr and the sr2 what you think?
I think they're the same. I can imagine this comes down to price. If you end up on a DDJ-800 or DDJ-1000 they are built much better than the entry level controllers.
Just a question , do you think / know if the new smart color affects could be mapped to djm 900 of 850 mixers ? Cheers , thx for the review . Keep up the good works !
thank you for your video am buying this controller next week. I wasn't sure which one to choose before between ddj 400 and ddj flx4. But I got a question though though, my laptop does not have the type c port, will this controller work on my pc?
But how did you map/program the MIDI with rekordbox?? I would love to see a video please.. OR PLEASE RELEASE YOUR MIDI MAP 🙏 I have had the absolute most frusterating time trying to set up the jog wheel and FX since when you buy the controller it doesnt come mapped to anything and you have to map everything manually..... There are no videos on this so im sure people would get tons of use out a mapping midi video PLEASE
I really think that this gimmicky new features are bad for beginners, don’t take me wrong, they are great and sure they make transitions and stuff way easier for beginners, but they ain’t learning to do them for real because it’s the software doing it for them and the general idea it’s that this type of hardware be your gateway in the path to play with cdjs, and if that is the case you will be completely lost when using them because you will not find this easy way of doing things. This actually happened to me going from numark controller to an FLX-6 and then trading to play on cdjs, of course most of it is the same, but if you get use to this gimmick it’s going to be really hard to use professional equipment in the future. It’s just a personal opinion, I think the 400 is a great peace of equipment and so is this, but yes, my advice is to learn djing the old school way soy then you don’t get caught off guard.
Off-topic: None of the used gear at my local store is compatible with Rekordbox or Mixxx. No matter the brand (Pioneer, Numark, Hercules, Behringer). Coming from music production software, this is so weird to me: MIDI keyboards are mostly plug & play, whether your DAW costs $0 or $2000. I just want to pick up a controller & some low-priced _non-subscription_ software, and start practicing before I get carried away on gear. Is that too much to ask for in 2022? Am _I_ the crazy one? Should I just shut up and be thankful not to be budgeting for a vinyl rig & records? This whole compatibility thing seems to be a racket, just like the software for sewing/embroidery machines. 😾
You can program most controllers to work with mixxx, and virtual DJ as well. VDJ probably has the largest compatibility in the market, usually someone has already made a template for whatever kit you're trying to use. I mean, I've used an apc40, an mpd, several mixtracks, an lpd, midi fighter... All sorts of weird stuff, and there's always a template pre made for it lol. Even stuff that says "only for serato/rekordbox/etc" has VDJ templates!

No news but surely it's coming. Just makes sense now they have DDJ-FLX4 and DDJ-FLX6
@@Crossfader Hope so, fingers crossed!
The DDJ-1000 is still a much better controller than the DDJ-FLX6, I really hope they don't replace it with a FLX controller
@@Crossfader I'd say it's HIGHLY likely a flx8 or maybe even flx10 shall come 2nd or 3rd quarter 2023, just wait for it, I'd bet money on it
@@hrmny_ they will
Wow. I kind of wish I'd waited for this instead of getting the DDJ 400. It looks like it has some great features and updates on it.
It does, however, don't be disheartened about having the DDJ-400. Still a great choice that has stood the test of time!
@@Crossfader Absolutely! The DDJ 400 is still fantastic and more than enough for my needs👍 Just need more free time to practice on it
@@Crossfader - "Stood the test of time" I mean, let's be real though, the DDJ-400 was released in June of 2018 and was produced by Pioneer up until January 2021...so it was in production for 2 1/2 years. It is a great controller but it really isn't that old.
Crossfader the best channel for dj in the word...
Outstanding video. Nothing else to say, I'm writing this just for the algo to boost it further. Great job here and thank you!
If were looking to eventually do clubs or festivals should I learn without all the smart buttons?
If you use sync you can do the smart fade stuff “manually” pretty easily
I like the way you explain everything makes it much easier to learn how to use the control thank you keep up the good work 👍
Thanks. We’re glad you enjoy the explanations!
Thank you! your work helped me to choose this controller for my 14 year old son. Carlos from Montreal
Just got one recently. Love it ❤ Great breakdown. This was very helpful!
This looks great for DDJ 400 replacement but the important question is when will this be available? None of the stores have it.
It’s not released yet . It’s available for pre order in some online retailers . Will start shipping out in 2023
We heard from Pioneer DJ that it would be available from the launch. Hope it's not 2023!
stupid question maybe...and maybe the wrong place but i got a ddj-flx4 using it with rekordbox on ipad....how do i connect them, as just over ipad it sucks power off....do i need an adapter for the power???
💁🏼♂ one thing I don't really get is this: is the controller doing the effects processing? or is it all in the app / software running on the computer? Like the smart crossfader... that's not happening on the device itself right. So why is that some kind of exclusive thing to this controller?
Yeah I wanna know this
Thank you, this helped to make my mind up, I'll be buying this and come to watch your extensive tutorial video on it
This motivated me to start my journey 🤟🏽
I wish some of these beginner consoles would let you plug in vinyl decks. Love some of these new features but without the decks input it's a deal breaker for me. The price is amazing though for all the features.
I've noticed something from the 400 to the FLX4, though this may not be too worrisome but something that stood out to me personally
1, The redesigned FX area improves workflow for those uses FX a lot.
Amazing review! Has the "smart-fader" been fixed in Serato?
I'm getting one today after this video thanks for the explanation
I like how he starts saying that this is a great entry controller for people agnostic of their software- then only lists recordbox and Serato as if it’s the entire universe.
There’s dozens of us on VDJ and Traktor! Dozens…!
But in all seriousness this looks like a cool controller.
I like this very very much. I already own ddj-400. Now my question is I do not pay for the rekordbox monthly subscription. Will this still work without paying the subscription?
Yes it works without subscription, just run the free version of rekordbox can use flx4
Well put together editorial . Brilliant
I’ve had the flx6 for a year and the only complain I have is the jog wheels are rough and bumpy because it has plastic gears inside
Yeah we feel that too on our's. 😔
Can we use it on other DAWs for example Ableton?
I bought the Rev1 3 weeks ago and I love it. Especially connected with dj pro ai on my iPhone it's amazing.
I really wanna upgrade my SB3 to something more rekordbox friendly any recs?
Can we do VDJing on ddj flx 4 connected to laptop?
Is there a dedicated slip mode button on this device?
Unfortunately no sir. slip & mt are only in the apps
Damn, I didn't know about that saved loop feaure, thanks!
Im deciding between the Hercules Inpulse 500 vs FLX4. Which one should I get as my first controller?
Thanks for this great video. I am new to DJing, learnt a lot.
So the smartphone DJ app mixes
- audio tracks stored in the smartphone
- and streamed tracks from Soundcloud, Tiday, Beatport & Beatsource,
and the controller is a bluetooth remote control, but does not interfere with what you stream or what you download.
So.. what's the go-to upgrade from the ddj-400 nowdays?
All the features are really cool and I can see how they can help however is there an option to turn all the features off and really learn bare bones manually yourself ? If there is option for both this is great option , either way I already pre ordered haha
You can simply choose to not use the features. If you don't turn them on with the buttons then they won't be active. Just as we teach in our courses, tools such as sync are great too but don't learn to DJ with them otherwise you will get stuck using them and it doesn't always work. You need to be able to take control when things don't quite go to plan or sound quite right.
How to preorder this controller? I'm from India could you help me how to get hands on it?
I have this device, I use it with an amplifier. The system cuts off the sound after 3-4 tracks, I changed the amplifier but the sound cuts out again. why doing this?
the cable on the light keeps bothering me for some reason
Hey! Thanks for the review. One question, does it come with a rekordbox license?
Brilliant walkthrough of a excellent new beginning level controller from Pioneer
Jamie’s still rocking’ his lockdown locks.
I love it! I have a rx3 and I love my flx4. It’s portable cheap. Does everything you need.
i just bought one and look forward to the seen improvements.
what a mind blowing explaination !
this unit is a KILLER 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
👏👏👏
Any chance of you guys doing an updated video for this controller with serato DJ pro and the free version of rekordbox? I’ve already got DJ pro coming from a basic numark controller and I’m not too keen on paying monthly on rekordbox just to be able to record my sets 👎🏻
Smart fader still doesn’t work in DJ pro either unfortunately.
Do I get a rekordbox license key with this dj controller?
Hi, question please . At home I have about 15000 tracks on my QNAP Nas drive running to my hifi which I control with an app on my iPad & iPhone. Can I get the new FLX4 to see the tracks so I can play them from the Nas drive? They are all in wav & flac. Cheers great video 👍🏆
This is insane 🔥🤯
Great overview, thanks. I can't for the life of me work out how to record my sets using a Zoom recorder (h4essentials). I've tried:
> Using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the headphone port on my Mac, to the “Line In” on the Zoom recorder.
Have learned so much! Thank you Jamie!
What laptops would you recommend using to link to the controller?
Hi ,I'm wondering which is better to buy DJJ FLX4 or Numark FX Platinium ? What do You think ? Regards 😎👍
good evening, very nice video, but I have a problem, I want to buy the pioneer dj ddj flx-4 and I don't know what cables to buy and what usbs to connect it to my MacBook ,in general I can't find any video talking about cables or how we connect it all together
Gonna come back to this video when I get my controller 👌 good stuff bro
Do you have an inpulse 500 review?
Thanks for the videos. Enioying them a lot
Agree being able to try both serato and RB is a great feature, shame it's Serate lite though. £300 to upgrade is a big cost to stay with serato.
Yeah, true point. I suppose it comes down to wether you really want to stick with Serato or not and wether the upgrade is worth it. Maybe you would upgrade your controller to something bigger that unlocks Serato DJ Pro instead.
@@Crossfader I think pioneer are doing the right thing with supporting both, I'd have bought a DDJ1000 if it had supported both Serato and RB.
How did you compare to Roland DJ202? Price is for both is similiar
Thank you for this video, so well explained and executed
Dose the smart fader work on serato pro?
If we don't use the Smart CFX, can we choose other effects for those knobs or only the Filter?
What about the knobs and the potentiometers? Did Pioneer improve them? On my both DDJ 400s they started wobbling after one year, due to heavy use. :(
I think they're the same. I can imagine this comes down to price. If you end up on a DDJ-800 or DDJ-1000 they are built much better than the entry level controllers.
Will the new smart color fx be added to a new rekordbox update? Merge Fx was.
The fact that she’s so happy while she’s telling us just had me watching the whole thing
How to enable scratch mode in DDJ FLX4 using Serato DJ lite?
Any idea on why I’m getting no audio output from my speakers, I’ve got all my cables connected correctly but when pressing play nothing comes out
I'm assuming a driver download is available on the pioneer website to integrate the new FX to record box?
But how did you map/program the MIDI with rekordbox?? I would love to see a video please.. OR PLEASE RELEASE YOUR MIDI MAP 🙏 I have had the absolute most frusterating time trying to set up the jog wheel and FX since when you buy the controller it doesnt come mapped to anything and you have to map everything manually..... There are no videos on this so im sure people would get tons of use out a mapping midi video PLEASE
About to hit buy on this - can’t help but feel like it lacks some sort of back lighting though and also doesn’t look as good as the DDJ 400?!
Tirando o fato da numark Platinum FX não vir com serato pro acho que a numark e a melhor opção nessa faixa de preço
