      I am an owner of DDJ-FLX4 and I can tell what I like or dislike too. I am sorry if its too long
      I) Looks: I think the use of the same color is cost effective, but I would prefer another color, blue like flx6 or the old red in 400. I can live with that though. RGB is out of question because its for more expensive controllers.
      II) Feel: Its ok, still I believe the 400 looked better, but its sleek and nice. You can upgrade it with 3rd party knobs etc. I will do it .
      III) Connectivity: Now I can see that usb c is not good for secure connection, but for this entry level its fine, for home use or outdoor djing or streaming its ok, You can find quality cables and the addition of usb port for power if your laptop is not providing power (like a usb hub), its way better than a propriety power brick
      IV) smart CFX and Smart Fader when you open them they use one of you effect slot in Rekordbox if you are using a DDJ-XP2 or you have mapped another midi, it disables it, CFX fx2 amd smartfader fx3.
      a) smart CFX is a nice addition a bit limited but you can do many tricks.
      b) smart fader is controversial because is making transitions easier, in a way that is not easy to do manually.
      I use it only to my sliders, because adjusting the bpms from the one track to another. Because I dont use the crossfader to change tracks, I use sliders and filter knobs.
      is it a cheat? yes but if its used properly is useful
      helps new djs? yes it will make home party djing great experience
      it can help also for changing short tracks or make nice short previews.
      V) The microphone via USB is good addition
      VI) Works with Serato without having a special edition.
      Scratching is not its strong point, the REV line is what pioneer wants to sell.
      For me is a step forward but not cheap, mine was a gift, but where I live is 370Euros and most Pioneer controllers have price increase.
      Chip Shortage is a major issue now, and used prices are not as cheap as we would like.
      I want to see the replacements for DDJ 800 and 1000 to see what pioneer has learned.
      Choosing your software first and then your controller, pioneer making rekordbox is a HUGE plus for non scratching djs and the similar clubstyle to the most common dj gear (pioneer), it will give you muscle memory for the future.
      Virtual Dj works with everything, and Serato has many options as well
      Rekordbox has its own gear as well as Trakktor
      Denon Engine is another beast, especially for standalone all in one setup. cheaper than XDJs
      ps. You can map a midi controller like AKAI APC MINI realy easy. DDJ-XP2 is expensive.
      I have mapped 16 pad effects and the buttons are staying on (I havent found a way to adjust the color of the pad though)
      I have mapped the fx effects to the sliders. Now I am thinking what I should map to the rest pads. I have 16 free for each channel.
      The APC 40MKII is a beast but the same price as the DDJ-XP2 so if you have it you can use it.

    After using the smart fader for the first time it feels like cheating. It works though and the crowd won't think you're a worse dj for using it.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  ปีที่แล้ว +123

      Honestly, it blew my mind the first time I used it! And it DOES feel like cheating, even adding a little echo at the end to complete the mix. But hey, if it gets the crowd going, who am I to judge? Hahaha

    • @Zlorak
      @Zlorak ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I feel just like DJ Carlo said, it is just a tool. It opens the chance to do aggresive mixing, since you can now go from a song to another much faster than before.

    • @sagelyden
      @sagelyden ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Some people in the crowd might notice. 😬 Very small percentage of people though hahahah. Also it’s so much more rewarding to successfully mix in another song manually. Doing it manually also gives you the operation to do something more original when you play two songs at once. 💯 having fun is pretty much #1 priority tho so whatever floats your boat

    As a beginner dj, I found that the FLX4 was perfect for getting off the ground and getting comfortable with learning to dj and scratch. I know most people think of the smart crossfader as a gimmick, but I found it can come in very handy for learning how a perfectly mixed track sounds like. I don't use it all the time as it feels more rewarding to mix more hands on, but for difficult transitions, I'll use it to help give me a guideline on how to mix more smoothly, and that's been very helpful. Great video review :)

    I used to have the DDJ-200, which was a fun way to start DJ'ing, but it really lacked a lot of features, and required me to use keyboard + mouse a lot to control Rekordbox. I recently got the FLX4 and it's so awesome! I feel that it has all the features I need as a hobbyist DJ, and it'll probably take years before I'll upgrade.

      I personally been using the Pioneer DDJ-SZ and it have EVERYTHING I ever wanted on the controller. Color cue pads, two different modes on the cue pads (Saved Loop access, making and removing them on the fly is my favorite feature of it and haven't seen Pioneer ever bring it back since 2015), Giant Jogwheels akin to that of their CDJ/XDJ Club Players, and my personal favorite, the oscillators and color FX next to the filter knobs, are my absolute favorite of them all. It also has the track needle search brought over from DDJ-SX, along with the multiple RCA outputs, Two microphone inputs, and much more, it's a DJ controller that, while its been beaten up, is still one of my favorites, despite the massive size that it can take up, even a small table. So I'll have to invest in some laptop stand that hovers over the controller at some point in the future.

But overall very pleasant product, def an improvement compared to the DDJ-400. My favorite thing about it are the volume faders. Those just feel premium quality. EQ knobs are also decent... I just got mine last week. I love it!!
    I'm more of a beginner bedroom DJist, a hobbyist that wants to learn the craft. I've always wanted learn it, not as a profession but for my love for EDM and song mixing since I was 20.
    Now at over 40 yrs old, I'm finally trying to learn it. I had bought the DDJ 200, but my Samsung updated and so I could no longer use WeDJ. Though, I started using DJay for Android afterwards and the 200, I felt I needed am upgrade since I couldn't use the pads for FX; which kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a controller.
    So I gave the 200 to my nephew (he has an older Android that I knew was not going to have the updates like mine), and I bought the Flx4.
    As a beginner DJ, I'm loving it even more than the 200, which I loved, up until the time WeDJ no longer worked with it.
    The smart fader is a nice feature. Fundamentals still apply (timing, eq-ing, and whether or not to use it, or to just echo out).
    I can't wait for Rekordbox to be fully functional with Android OS. I love being a minimalist, and I use my phone for nearly anything. Suits me just fine for what I want to get out of it for now.

    I have this controller… bought it like three weeks ago and it’s my first time ever djing after getting into techno a bit over a year ago. It’s been amazing for me… lots of things on it i don’t know how to use yet and with the bare minimum it’s been treating me really well. Also the usbc is really convenient! I considered getting a ddj400 at first but went for this one. I’ve been really enjoying myself. Watching this video gave me anxiety that I made the wrong choice but at the end i know that it’s phenomenal for beginner djs. Your videos are great! My best advise to people getting started is to try to contact experienced djs and ask them for advise, show them a recorded mix and they’ll give you some good pointers. Also tell them some of the things you’re doing if they can’t actually watch you play. I was making a lot of tiny mistakes that when someone pointed them out to me it really helped me improve. I always really try to study what djs are doing because the small things that experienced players do really make a big difference and usually aren’t super hard to incorporate into your habits. Cheers

    Two comments on the Inpulse 500, Effects section can be remapped with using the mic high/low buttons and using the manual loop-in-out to setup the right beat effect section.
    I've had one mapping for using the Mix high/low buttons and one mapping using the Aux and Aux filter depending on the needs, so the effect section can be "fixed".

    About the USB-C cable issue!
    I noticed myself that cable quality varies ALOT. Both in specifications (power, data transfer, features...) and also physical connector quality.
    I had a USB-C cable for example that came with a display monitor that would not have a strong retention once connected to my laptop and could be knocked off by moving the laptop a bit while the thunderbolt cable I got that's made by Apple can drag the monitor around on my desk. (I don't specifically endorse Apple's cables, it just happened to be what was given to me at work.)
    Note that it can also be controller's port too! I remember Pixel phones (don't remember the generation) had that issue too either on Day 1 or over time with use.
    So...yeah, I share your opinion on that even though it can be much better without ditching the USB-C connection at all just because of that varying quality in manufacturing at the moment.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right?! They should've tried to utilize the same ports in phones. They really clamp down on the cable to make sure it doesn't pop off at the worst moments

    Not completely relevant but I got a DDJ-200 about 5ish months ago to start learning how to DJ and I've really liked it, but in retrospect I kind of wish I just went for a DDJ-400, because not having built-in loop controls is really annoying now that I'm getting better, I have to use my mouse to control looping, and looping in and out. Also, there aren't any buttons to change what the performance pads do, for example changing from queue points to the sampler, so if I want to do that I also have to use my mouse. The lack of connector strength with USB-C didn't came as surprise to me. I have noticed similar problems with audio interfaces that has gone USB-C. Loosing connectivity because of the rather weak friction of the connector. They could have prevented these sort of problems with USB-C cable and connector with a clamping mechanism.
    The FLX-4 should also work with Traktor Pro 3 using the FLX-6 MIDI mappings posted by Native Instrument. I tried the FLX-6 mapping file with my DDJ-400 and it works out of the box. After digging up the MIDI reference manuals for FLX-6, FLX-4 and DDJ-400. I found that PioneerDJ used mainly the same MIDI channels and messages for the related functions on all 3 devices, where the FLX-6 has additional functions for deck 3 & 4.
    As for the mixer area knobs. I would just recommend everyone to invest 20 bucks into getting some Chroma caps (or Coolercaps) to replace the standaard knobs (trim, EQ, filter, FX depth - 11 knobs total). The softer rubber touch of the Chroma caps makes playing for hours on these units much more pleasant, without those corner bites in your fingers. Using the fatty knobs also allow you easier to dial in more accurately, great for CFX filter, FX-1 depth and the trim knobs.

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Right?? Fact is, nearly all controllers have proper clamps for their USB-B cables (the Mixtrack Platinum came loose when I pulled it during the filming of this video, none of the others did). And great advice on the knobs too!

    And your problem with the knobs is easy to solve: you can change the knobs to another one with different colors, also there are stickers available with dots you can place on the surface. Iam a pro dj i own also a xdj rx3 but due to its size im mostly using flx 4 when im djing to several bars ! I want people to understand that models like 400 or flx can be used also from experienced and pro djs. Surely more expensive equipment can give you a better djing experience BUT if you have the mindset and the playlists and the experience those controllers can be used by professionals too!

    • @djcarlo
      @djcarlo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's fair Pedro! I call this a beginner controller as it's budget friendly, and has the basic features any controller should have. But, it's by no means limited to JUST being a beginner controller. Using it outside in bars and parties totally work too!

      @@djcarlo hey Carlo one small help that I would massively appreciate do you know any certain way to have in ddj flx 4 a bar loop by pressing the in button? Like it used to be in the ddj 400 because I’m not a big fan of the exit/4 bear loop

    i'm torn between the ddj400 and this, used to play at clubs and the ddj400 visually with dots, texture, color etc has better feels that resembles (in a mini version) what I used to play on. the serato/rekord box combo however is neat though. thoughts?:)

    I still use Hercules 4-MX (bought in 2012) with Virtual DJ 7. I miss a lot sensitive pads (my controller has hard buttons), a better effect system and a modern dj software. I might sell it for 100 € (?) because it still works good and has a lot of inputs/outputs for its category; and buy Pioneer FLX-4. Do you think it's a smart move? :)

      For example, in techno/house we mix around 15 tracks by hour.
      In drum and bass 55/60.

I just couldn't figure out the measuring system it used as displayed in the DJUCED software, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and it seems it differs from the rekordbox or serato. But overall it was a nice beginner controller.
