My first impression after watching this review of the FLX6 after using DDJ-400 extensively last 2 years: - The redesigned FX area improves workflow for those uses FX a lot (i do). Moving the beat-size selector closer to dry/wet knob is going to be more pleasant. Too bad the FX select is still a button, and not an endless encoder. Which would make FX selection so much easier. - About the FX channel selector, I noticed it now say "1, 2, 1&2". This is different from the DDJ-400 where it's "1, 2, MASTER". It might be pedantic, but there is a difference in "FX on deck 1 & 2" or "FX on MASTER channel". The latter also include ALL DECKS, plus the SAMPLER DECKS. The former is literally only deck 1 and 2. - Headphone controls are closer to the channel fader, which is also a nice touch for workflow. - For someone that wasn't too impressed with MergeFX: The Smart CFX button is almost begging to be MIDI remapped to CFX Select Next and CFX Select Prev. Smart CFX is very much a cousin of MergeFX. You can achieve similar (or better) results with extra MIDI controllers that has faders, knobs, encoders. I'm using a Xone K2 for that. - I wonder or that mic volume knob can be MIDI remapped for CFXSubParameter. Which is still a feature very much missing on the entry level controllers. - No phantom power for the mic input makes the whole mic feature just so there is the ability to. Also is the mic input send to a separate channel in the audio interface or will it be mixed down to a stereo channel before going out the USB interface? So in comparison, the DDJ-400 was a 2x4 interface (2 ins, 4 outs), is the FLX4 also 2x4 or a 3x4? - The RCA connectors looking bit sturdier on the FLX6. - Glad they moved the USB connector away from the RCA outputs: now you can use any L-shape USB connectors with the unit. Which was a problem with the aftermarket USB DJ cables like Chroma Cables from DJTT. - No more markers on the crossfader is a bit of shame, but I'll admit it does look cleaner this way. But they were somewhat useful when I just started on learning how to do cut techniques with the crossfader. - On the DDJ-400 there were lots of noise in the unit, both the headphone cue output as well the rear RCA. I wonder or the FLX4 is doing any better.

I LOVE that the jog wheels are matte! I hope they don't feel as slippy as the shiny 400 ones look. 10 years since I sold my turntables and mixer, got the itch to have a play around again. More interested in song selection and mixing than scratching, but ugh...shiny slippery jog wheels just look like a turnoff, like plasticky synth keys versus a more weighted piano key feel. Will have to try hands on and see.
I have had one for about a month now, still learning and came across this video. I have to say that there is nothing like it for price versus performance and features. Rekordbox 7 has just made it even better. If you are thinking about buying an entry level controller this is the one !
I had a Traktor for about six months, but ended up getting rid as didn't like it as I learnt on a pair of Pioneer CDJs and a DJM, but it was at the start of the pandemic, and the DDJ400s were like hens teeth. I ended up selling it and used the money to put towards PC upgrade. Forgot about it for a few years and sunk money into my PC. Recently, I got the itch to start again from watching James Hype. I was a bit worried about my missus' reaction when I told her, as she doesn't want us upsetting the neighbours. Over the last few weeks the downstairs neighbours bought really loud speakers and have really pissed her off, so I told her I wanted one and she's all for it. Buying one this week, and can't wait to get my hands on it 🙌

You'd also need the headphones adaptor for your model of phone. But the best way to DJ with this unit is definitely, by a long way, with a laptop.

USB-C is highly welcomed and should become standard on all smaller and medium sized controllers. Sweet. This remains an entry level controller though, and the Pioneer looping system is still awfully arachic compared to Traktor and Denon (Encoder).

Phil! After watching this boss review, I've just bought this console. I've had a Traktor S2 for years - and it's great - but here's thing: if you're any sort of club/bar DJ you will be faced with Pioneer kit. Buying this gives me a ) a lightweight rig for gigs where they don't have any equipment and b) the grounding of the Pioneer/Rekordbox OS. For all the bells and whistles (and sirens) of other brands, when you play out, you will be using Pioneers. Just as in the past we all had to learn on Technics.
@@digitaldjtips Nice one, Phil - love how the channel has grown. What an achievement! I sold all my vinyl in 2021 and don't miss it all. I think that's partly down to the possibilities that DDJT has exposed me to. Big up!
1) can you re-map the Smart CFX button to just switch the CFX filter On/OFF instead? I like to sometimes have the filter OFF, turn it all the way to the right first, then switch it on and turn the knob back to centre. 2) can the SmartCFX + Shift be re-mapped to just cycle between filter, crush, space, etc, instead of the new effects? thanks
Really nice looking unit. I messed last summer on my nephews DDJ 400 which was sweet to use, but this is a real step forwards for pioneer. Gonna be interesting to use this in iOS mode. Also loving the new effects and I’m glade they did not change the design to much as the DDJ 400 was super easy to use. I DJ with a DDJ 10000 & VDJ so I’ll prolly pick one of these up soon as they sort there software. Great video as always Phill. That auto fader button, with bpm ha! That’s something that takes ages to learn and I use this effect to go from house to hip hop all the time. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love that they're making all this new dj stuff, much of it because of the crazy power of our phones. Now I wish someone would make a direct drive portable turntable with nice main components. Almost like an omni but DD and like a 9 or 10 inch legit platter. Running on batteries probably can't happen but I'm cool with that
Thank you for the informative video, i had a question here, i would like to get one and i was wondering if i can connect it with bigger speakers with xlr ports, im sure i will need another device in between, can you please suggest what exactly do i need? Thank you
Great review. The biggest thing that went through my head upon hearing that the 400 getting a replacement is will the DDJ1000 be next? And how soon? I have a DDJ400 now and plan on upgrading to the 1000 within the next few months. Should I just wait? The 1000 seems so perfect and is basically like having club gear but for us laptop Djs. So a version thats just as good plus even more features seems like it could be worth the wait unless its going to take a year or so to come out.
Tbh if you are looking to upgrade, go for an xdj or something standalone. The 1000 is great don't get me wrong I daily drive one. But thats the only thing i would've done different in my big upgrade. Standalone is a different level of immersion.
Excellent review ! I ordered yesterday, and dying to lay my hands on it ! Thank you Phil & Digital DJ Tips ! One question - Could you please suggest few microphone models, which would be compatible with this ? The only thing I have found out is not to go for a condenser one.
Shute SM58 is the only DJ mic I’ve ever recommended, although their are copies of it on Amazon for $20 that seem to get good reviews. “Dynamic mic” is what you’re looking for.
At home I am running all my cds vinyl etc on a QNAP Nas drive 3tb mirrored which I listen to on a Naim hifi. Can I link the FLX4 to talk to my QNAP to access all the music? Cheers 👍🏆
I had to return this as on multiple occasions the track tempo inexplicably sped up for no apparent reason whenever I adjusted the mid frequency knobs. It was simply too unreliable. Not sure if it was a software or hardware issue. It also was unusable with pc connected speakers as there was a sound lag which I could only get around by connecting external speakers directly to the connections on the controller. Which was not ideal for casual use. Ended up going back to my reliable, problem free - but a dated Traktor S3
Gonna buy one as a backup to my DDJ1000 (which is also built into a Cosmopod type stand) - will probs do the odd gig with one plugged into an A+H Zed desk for mics.
I got my FLX 4 a few days ago and so far Im loving it!! I started with Serato and I have 1 question to swap between the FX you hold on shift and press on the Sfx button or vice-versa? Been a bit confused since serato doesn't show on screen the fx changing as in recordbox.
Hi, I have started DJing just new, and I have bought a Numark Mixstream Pro Go which I thought would be easier to pratice on without a laptop and any speaker - even without any cables, but every tutorial video I see has this DDJ400 or FLX4 in it. Would you recommend me switching to Pioneer or keep with the Numark?
Since this is a Rekordbox first controller, what do Serato users miss out on using the FLX4, and do Serato users run into any issues connecting, mapping, etc.? Do you recommend the FLX4 for Serato users?
Great reviews, thanks. Is this controller good for using in bars? I previously used the Traktor S2 but have migrated over to using Rekordbox. Just wondering from an "audio output" perspective, when plugging in to a bar's speaker sockets (XLR), using an adaptor on the cables.
great review. Can i simply plug in my smartphone? Does it have a built in amp for speakers, or standard audio out? Whats the best really cheap 2 channel mi8xer out there youd reccomend/ for travel and home. And Denon battery powered with inbuild screen? Thanks
So many questions! 1. Yes, as of early 2023. 2. No, standard 2 x RCA audio out 3. You mean DJ controller? Numark DJ2GO2 Touch 4. There's only one - Prime Go.
Is there a way to disable the Smart CFX and have button rather be mapped to the default Sound CFX options ( User )... I find the Smart CFX pointless and would rather have extra control of the Sound CFX as I find they a lot more practical when playing.
thank you for the video i am a beginner and it helps me a lot.i have a couple of questions.1-if we buy ddj-flx4 do we have to pay for rekordbox or its have a license key like ddj400 model.
I haven't gotten a controller since the Numark Mix Track Pro II which I use Serato. Considering on upgrading to this but had a question if cue points would be saved if I got this one?
One thing that I would like to know as well is if I can djing without speakers, just using my headphones with this DDJ-FLX4. It would be a great thing to know because sometimes I do not want to bother anyone with my songs... Could you tell me that? (I already watched your video explaining how to dj with headphones, however I do not know if this dj controller has the same functionality.)
It doesn't have "split cue" which is how some people like to DJ with just headphones, but it does have the headphone mix knob which can be used when DJing with just headphones... so a qualified "yes".
This is amazing, thank you so much! I had been looking to get the DDJ-400 for months now, but this is definitely a better choice for me starting out! Do you have any recommendations for wired speakers that work best with the DDJ-FLX4?
Phil - does the USB-C pass-through / power delivery work to charge a USB-C MacBook? Would be nice to only need one charger plugged-in and also free up a port on the M1 macs.
Nice video, but your conclusion for me is somewhat confusing. You mentioned buy buy buy the 400 (which I interpret as the DDJ-400), but I guess you meant buy the FLX4 mainly because is future proof (serato, rekordbox and tablet accessibility later on). Great video nonetheless!!

Can the CFX be set to the regular sound color fx, which are maybe a bit less extreme/ more useful?
Good questions, and the answer is: Not sure not had enough time to discover things like this yet. We'll investigate...
If this only had an XLR output, I'll be buying it in an instant.
Yeah, not something you find on beginner controllers.
Currently got the DDJ-200 looking at upgrading what should I go for this or spend the extra money and get the DDJ-FLX6?
This
Looking forward to getting this soon 👍🏼
Hope you enjoy it!
Yup, you're right. And thanks for the thumbs up, nice to hear from you Mr Teasdale.
@@digitaldjtips Nice one, Phil - love how the channel has grown. What an achievement! I sold all my vinyl in 2021 and don't miss it all. I think that's partly down to the possibilities that DDJT has exposed me to. Big up!
Nice review, thanks
You’re welcome
1) can you re-map the Smart CFX button to just switch the CFX filter On/OFF instead? I like to sometimes have the filter OFF, turn it all the way to the right first, then switch it on and turn the knob back to centre.
2) can the SmartCFX + Shift be re-mapped to just cycle between filter, crush, space, etc, instead of the new effects?
thanks
Sorry, not had time to play with this ourselves. Will let you know if we do!
I just got a flx 4 yesterday and its dope
Glad you're enjoying it!
Yeah, we love it!
DDJ-FLEX 1000
China Hometheatre music track world No 1 sound system Dolby Atmos music player continue
I love that they're making all this new dj stuff, much of it because of the crazy power of our phones. Now I wish someone would make a direct drive portable turntable with nice main components. Almost like an omni but DD and like a 9 or 10 inch legit platter. Running on batteries probably can't happen but I'm cool with that
That would be cool!
Very Detailed review. Thanks. Does the smart fade work within Serato as well or just RB?
Just RB
@@digitaldjtips thanks
Go for the 800 first.
There's little missing on the 1000 as it stands though - it's a legend for a reason!
Tbh if you are looking to upgrade, go for an xdj or something standalone. The 1000 is great don't get me wrong I daily drive one. But thats the only thing i would've done different in my big upgrade. Standalone is a different level of immersion.
excellent vid, thankyou!!
Glad you liked it!
Definitely a hardware issue, and unusual - I suspect a replacement unit would have been fine.
Will this smart effect be used in serato too or only rekordbox...?
Great piece!
👍
Gonna buy one as a backup to my DDJ1000 (which is also built into a Cosmopod type stand) - will probs do the odd gig with one plugged into an A+H Zed desk for mics.
Yeah, that would work - many pro DJs use the old DDJ-400 like this.
Love from India ❤
Hi DJ Tony!
Thank you for this ❤️
You're so welcome!
I got my FLX 4 a few days ago and so far Im loving it!!
I started with Serato and I have 1 question to swap between the FX you hold on shift and press on the Sfx button or vice-versa? Been a bit confused since serato doesn't show on screen the fx changing as in recordbox.
It's always good to see a new 2 channel controller. Now can we get a serato sr2 or ddj 800 mk2 for serato?
That'd be nice, a DDJ-800SRT or equivalent...
You thing it worths upgrading from a ddj ergo ? I don’t know what really choose for my upgrade! Awesome video 😊
Yes would be a good upgrade
I'm interested in a comparison between the flex 4 and the rev 1
REV1 just Serato/laptop. Rest is just layout really.
No the Numark is fine!
Since this is a Rekordbox first controller, what do Serato users miss out on using the FLX4, and do Serato users run into any issues connecting, mapping, etc.? Do you recommend the FLX4 for Serato users?
Yes, it works fine. Effects mapping is lacking, but that's the same even with smaller Serato-dedicated controllers nowadays.
Thank you for video.
you're welcome
hi my man what is the music that you are using at the background
owww new effect's! Smart fader is nice!
Agreed!
Great reviews, thanks. Is this controller good for using in bars? I previously used the Traktor S2 but have migrated over to using Rekordbox. Just wondering from an "audio output" perspective, when plugging in to a bar's speaker sockets (XLR), using an adaptor on the cables.
Will probably be OK
Gosh i wish it had a deck swap!!.But im enjoying it.
great review.
2. No, standard 2 x RCA audio out
3. You mean DJ controller? Numark DJ2GO2 Touch
4. There's only one - Prime Go.
@@digitaldjtips Thanks for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated 👍
Is there a way to disable the Smart CFX and have button rather be mapped to the default Sound CFX options ( User )... I find the Smart CFX pointless and would rather have extra control of the Sound CFX as I find they a lot more practical when playing.
Not tried it, but possibly. Check in the Midi mappings!
Great video Phil!! FLX4 vs Inpulse 500?? Thanks
FLX4
thank you for the video i am a beginner and it helps me a lot.i have a couple of questions.1-if we buy ddj-flx4 do we have to pay for rekordbox or its have a license key like ddj400 model.
you get the licence
Can this controller be used with an active PA speaker\subwoofer like the Alto TX212 & TX212S?
Apologies in advance for my ignorance. 😥
yes
Does the unit unlock the paid recordbox features on the iPad can someone please share you know for sure
No, but the version it does unlock is very good.
What about a uSN port? Does it have a usb port to load music from?
No, this is a DJ controller (works with a laptop) not a standalone (works from USB without a laptop).
I can’t get to use my harddrive with all my music on could you do a video on that I ain’t got a clue thanks
I haven't gotten a controller since the Numark Mix Track Pro II which I use Serato.
Considering on upgrading to this but had a question if cue points would be saved if I got this one?
Yes, as long as you carry on using Serato.
If you're on a budget, gaming speakers from computer stores can be a great buy, the Pioneer DJ DM-40s are cool too.
Realy cool device 👍
It really is!
Phil - does the USB-C pass-through / power delivery work to charge a USB-C MacBook? Would be nice to only need one charger plugged-in and also free up a port on the M1 macs.
That's a good point, but we would guess not - we will test next time we are set up with it though.
Probably just misspoke, sorry if so
Looks Slick 👌
