    Video 3 of 3: • Aims 6000 watt 48v inv...
    Whole home battery backup and generator setup.
    Aims 6000 watt 48v inverter
    48 volt battery bank
    This is video 1 of 3. In the next two videos i'll explain how the generator hookup works and the manual transfer switch at the power panel side.
    My goal is to eventually go off grid with solar panels.
    This is all purely for demonstration. You should consult an electrician for ANY electrical work or recommendations in your own home or setup.

    I have a very similar setup that I hooked up last year using an Outback VFXR3648 and eight 6v golf cart batteries. works very well, and the Outback supports grid tie once I can afford solar panels for the house. Just this week, I enabled the timer on the inverter to switch to battery power between 4pm and 7pm which are summer peak times for our utility company. I love this outback! it does everything lol. anyway very nice setup you have! and clean install. looking forward to the next video.

    nice setup .... by the way if you like to upgrade your b-bank in future... look for forklift battery even the used ones.

      I've looked in to forklift batteries and while there are a ton of them on craigslist the price + AH + weight isn't worth it for me. I can get these AGM batteries locally for penny's on the dollars through a local battery distributor. Thanks for the compliments! I'll be doing the next two videos soon the show the generator hook up and the transfer/bypass switch i'm using.

    Neat, clean simple set up. My only suggestion is move the batteries away from your set up or enclose them in an outside vented box. As your using them, they are producing explosive hydrogen gas. Go boom, boom. Good job. Be safe. J

    • @dubohio
      @dubohio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The batteries were enclosed shortly after this video. These batteries are sealed, and would only produce gas in the event of over charging which for the most part is unlikely. Thank for the kinds words though! My setup has changed quite a bit as my inverter has been updated the battery bank expanded, and enclosed.

      Did the Aims die? Why the inverter update? Thanks.

    • @dubohio
      @dubohio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original AIMs inverter was damaged in shipping, and was having issues stabilizing the power output during the 20 second internal interval when utility power returned, and it transferred from batter back to utility. Once it was on utility or on battery it worked fine but during the 20 seconds it was on battery and there was utility power it cause the output to fluctuate quite a bit.

      Thanks for the reply. I have the Aims 10,000 watt that I am going to try and run the whole house. I am now waiting on Aims to return my call for help with how the neutral (N) and the earth ground get wired up to the main breaker box. Something about the N not being needed.

    • @dubohio
      @dubohio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BonitaCreekWaterGuy I dont know about the 3 phase setup, but with my experience with AIMs is dont wait for them to call back. I would try calling them later in the day. I left a message for them and didn't get a call back for over a week. Their support guys know their stuff but they aren't the friendliest or most responsive. I'm sure they are just really busy...

    Please i need to know if i can run a (5kw) inverter direct from the grid with a 250/48v dc to ac down trans former and will i use less power from the grid as direct from the grit (5Kw). Take note no Solar panels or batterys

    Great job explaining, I’m doing the same idea , any suggestions welcome , “ I have a 3-5 KVA 230v Pure Sine Wave Inverter 230vx1 , charge controller 48v & a Moes Automatic Transfer Switch , I have both a 50A Double Pole Breaker & a 100A , my battery bank is lithium phosphate 3.2v x 15 = 48v & a 2.4v x 20 = 48v which was my first bank , 6/4/10’ , 6/3/10’, grounding rod 5/8” x 6’ Bear copper wire , 1/0 x 15’ RW,RHW Aluminflex , 1/0 x 15’ SIS Aluminum, 1/0 car audio positive & negative,

    Out of interest how quickly did the Battery voltage drop down to 47? I have a similar set up with 220Ah @48v but when I put an electric Kettle on 2400w (240v) my Batteries instantly drop to 49v and I get a low voltage alarm on the inverter although it does boil the Kettle. I'm starting to think my old agm Batteries may be to old to hold a load.

    • @dubohio
      @dubohio  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +J Grieve
      Does you voltage drop down and stay there or does it drop down and then recovers over time? I've seen my battery bank take a voltage hit if a high load starts pulling on the system, but as it stabilizes the batter voltage will raise again. It took about 6 hours to get to 47 volts on my system with my 134AH @48v and ~2000 watts being pulled on the battery bank.

    • @jgrieve3282
      @jgrieve3282 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did it during the day and after the kettle switched off the charge controller brought up the charge within a few minutes so I might try it without the solar connected and see if it recovers. My Batteries are pretty old agm's so they are possibly getting weak or close to the end of their life.

    BMS on the batteries?

  • @coziii.1829
    @coziii.1829 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got a question
    Don't you need about 24 batteries to run a house and same amount in panels .
    I'm got land thinking on down sizing no grid tie though.
    I hate City laws and taxes etc. Government crap too.
    The less they know the better.
    Is the Aims kit good .
    The 8,000 watt one for about 17 or 18 k.
    Or buying it all separate would be better?

    What size is the batteries. As I have the same and I get just over 2 hours on mine with panels being isolated..

    • @dubohio
      @dubohio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bosshoggett
      The Batteries are 12 volt 134 AH. So 4 batteries in series = 48 volt @ 134 AH. Two battery banks in parallel = 48 volts at 268 AH. 48 volts * 268 AH = 12864 watts or 12.8Kw. These are AGM batteries and weigh 100lbs+ each.

      +bosshoggett
      I just realized that in the video I still had 4 batteries. I now have 8 and pushing about 18+ hours of backup time with my load.

    You need way bigger wires on the D.C. side of Your inverter. something like 4/0.

    • @dubohio
      @dubohio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video is of my old setup. You can see the new one in the description. This was more of a proof of concept. My house will not pull enough power to ever make the invert go over 1/3 of it's 6000 watts AC. Specially in an emergency i'll go critical loads only and i'll be in the 300watts or less AC voltage range wise

    Why two transfer switches?

    • @dubohio
      @dubohio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The external transfer switch is for switching between utility and generator power. The one built in the inverter is for switching between the incoming power utility/generator and the battery bank.
