There is unfortunately some incorrect information and I want to thank those for helping!
Sigurd (Mother/Before Game): SIgurd's unnamed mother dies when he is young, as he says so in chapter 1 when speaking to Ethlyn.
Chrom (Mother/Before Game): Unless Chrom marries the Maiden, he mentions to tell his wife in chapter 12 that his mother passed when he was young.
Alear (Mother/Before Game): Alear brings up his unnamed mother's death occurring when he was young while speaking to Lumera in chapter 24.
Lucina (Robin/Main Story): If Robin is Lucina’s mother, Robin becomes Grima’s vessel and is defeated during the endgame.
Lyn’s grandfather is mistakenly referred to and shown as Hayden instead of Hausen.
(While this video is meant to only use in-game info, it is worth mentioning that Alm’s mother is spoken about in a Fire Emblem CD.)

@@goten3268 Sh'es descendant of Begnion's royal line, and, therefore, of Lehran. That doesn't mean her parents are dead, but her mother must at least be as otherwise she'd be empress instead of Sanaki. I think her father is also said to be dead, but maybe that's just my imagination.
Eliwood is definitely the winner here. Survived his son's game and had his mom survive in his.
But she dies of old age in Binding Blade and Eliwood would also die of sickness

I choose to believe that the ability to survive being a Fire Emblem parent is a genetic condition that Eliwood inherited from his mother.
and he passed that down to Roy
Roy might not have the stats, but he has something more important, the blood of true survivors
I chose to believe Eleanora is still alive by the end of FE6, and that she witnessed her son and grandson both going on epic dragon slaying quests and becoming badasses.
Alear's biological mother is dead. They mention it to Lumera, their future adopted mother, when they meet her for the first time.
Who does what for who now
Not to mention the mother is probably human and Dragons live for thousands of years

Worst part about this list is that jareld could have been a playable character but they scrapped that idea. I still remember starting engage meeting lumera and just mentally sighing knowing I was going to watch her die very soon. Why can’t we get a parent to and important character that doesn’t die almost instantly. At least let them join for a bit to make their death not that obvious, or make it a condition to have the support up high so they somehow survive.

I was always very distracted by Robin's mother's absence. Like, escaping a death-cult with a baby for the baby's protection is a pretty noble and amazing thing to do for your child and she's mentioned in only one line of text. How did she escape? Did Robin ever know of her? And if she escaped with baby Robin why was the main timeline's Robin also the Hierophant of Plegia?
Well the Hierophant was explicitly Future Grima's cover identity while waiting for another try at godhood. He'd lost a lot of strength from the failed possession of Present Robin.
So in the original timeline there was no Hierophant.
I always assumed she died protecting Robin, but if they lost all of their memories, then it makes sense that they'd forget their mother too
Alm’s mother actually appears in a drama cd. Iirc she leads an orphanage somewhere in rigel, hiding from the duma faithfull.

I believe an honorable mention goes out to Hector. While Lilina isnt a major chara ter gameplaywise, story wise she still warrents a gameover if she dies
So... Out in the "Dies during the game" section.
Technically she doesn’t actually give you a game over. However her survival in her join chapter is what allows you access to the first Gaiden/side story and through completing all and keeping all legendary weapons, you gain access to extra chapters and the best ending.
Although this is also the same for several characters in other side chapter requirements too.
She does still have some story relevance though and, like Caeda, along with being a love interest for the main lord, (while heavily pushed in official media, there are other options for Roy’s supports) Lilina is also still required for a couple recruitments.
Lilina doesn't cause a game over if she dies in FE6, though she must survive at least her joining chapter to obtain the good ending.
@@YokokazuoCaeda recruit way more characters than Lilina, she also indirectly caused the plot of fe3 since Nyna married Hardin to let Marth free to marry Caeda. Lilina isn't more important than Tana.
Kind of wild how almost every Lord/MU father is murdered by an important character they know of or even the main antagonist and then you have Jeralt who gets murdered by a literal who.
Here’s a quick and funny question. Who’s had the most dead parents? Out of any Fire Emblem character? If we count resurrections, adoption, and stepparents, I would imagine Corrin is up there. At least six of his parents died in his time. Another character off the top of my mind is Nino, who had six parent deaths. Two of her birth parents, and four from her adopted parents (three of which she could cause herself). With so many dead parents, it’s no wonder it’s so well known as a gag.
If you suck really bad at the game, Leif is a contender, he canonically lost 3 parental figure and you can lose 2 more in FE4 and FE5
losing both Quan and Ethlyn (birth parents)
losing Lachesis, his surrogate mother (in FE4, she was rumoured turned to stone in the Yied Desert, final fate unconfirmed, however Kaga's notes said that she was part of a resistance to save the children in the child hunt, and eventually reunited with Delmud and Nanna after the events of FE4. might be abandoned because Kaga's notes had canonical pairings)
If you are bad, you can lose Finn (his guardian) in-game FE4 or FE5
You can also lose Eyvel/Brigid (adopted mother) in FE5.
I supposed if you suck in the game, you could make Seliph lose all his parental figures as well, but I don't think you can kill off Aideen, only Oifey and Shannan, which makes him 1 short of Leif
I hope this is proof to any new players to NEVER get attached to a main characters parent in a Fire Emblem game... I mean, Engage had only just announced Lumera as Alears mother, when the betting began on how many chapters she would make it...
What's really funny though is that the new main character of Shez in Three Hopes also has dead parents, but if you do everything right, Jeralt survives and fight with your army alongside Byleth! So in the alternate universe setting of Three Hopes, Jeralt makes it all the way through, since Byleth is demoted to a side character, so gets to live!
Only in the good ending routes of Three Hopes. In the bad ending routes Jeralt and Byleth both die.
31:49 I mean to be fair Lilith dies in 2 of 3 routes and the only reason she survived in Revelations is because the plot just completely forgot about her existence after the route split, which honestly feels like a fate worse than death.
They say you die twice. Once when you die and again when everyone forgets about you.
Looks like Lilith skipped the first part. Both her deaths in the other paths are badly executed (literally one shot by a random Faceless), so yeah, she got done pretty badly.

It would be very interesting if the next Fire Emblem game, the new protagonist, has parents who could join your army. They usually just exist to die, so getting one to play would be a great change of pace.

In 3h, jeralt could have been the First parent playable, in the game files, jeralt has some quotes when he Is promoted or leveled
We can arguably say that Leif in Thracia 776, had Finn and Eyvel/Brigid as parental figures who joined them and could survive the game. Though Finn is more of an Oifey while Eyvel is a Jagen.
Sigurd [Prologue, talk conversation with Ethlyn]: "I swear, after Mother passed away, it was you who single-handedly kept us in check."
Alear [Chapter 24, after battle conversation with Lumera]: "Mother told me--this was before she died--that father called me that name."
The line of, "Father called me that, but only once," made me laugh so hard because I named my character Pussy as a joke.
Honorable mention my boy Hector. RIP to a true Chad, he would have loved to emblem engage

It really is a shame that we never get to learn anything about Robin’s mother. I imagine she must have been a really brave person to go against the ideas of the Grimleal, including Validar himself, in order to rescue her baby
Early in genealogy, Sigurd mentions to Ethlyn how thankful he was to have her around after their mother died, and when he leaves seliese, he thanks Lewyns mother for being the mother he never had
I feel like you could safely assume Micaiah and Chrom’s parents are all dead due to their siblings being in positions of royalty despite being young. Sanaki is a 10 year old and when Emmyryn “dies”, Chrom take her place, and he’s barely an adult himself.
I vaguely recall in radiant dawn sanaki explicitly states her mother is dead. Don't think it ever mentions what happened to her father, even in path of radiance

Chrom and lissa were acknowledged to be raised by their older sister who took exalt at a very young age, assuming it’s based on lineage and age (as chrom takes over for her rather than lissa so that can be assumed) it would be confusing that they would have a living mother and was never mentioned so I’m pretty sure it’s safe to assume their dead, as assuming she was alive creates tons of plot questions
Does this mean that eliwood is the best lord in the series? Using the rest sounds like a pitfall because they cant keep their children or parents alive smh

As of this writing, the Queen of Askr (mother to Alfonse and Sharena) from Fire Emblem Heroes is still alive, so that's technically another still living parent.

I think part of the reason for Fire Emblem leaning on the Dead Parent trope so much is that as a series, abandoning the 'old ways' in favor of something new is a pretty big part of it. FE9/10 deal with the old laguz/beorc hatreds being soothed, Awakening is about securing your own future instead of relying on ancient prophecies, etc. The ending theme of Echoes is basically entirely about this -
'And though I am gone,
Just ash in the wind.
One life surrendered,
So yours can begin.'
Not to mention all the old gods/demons/dragons/god demon dragons that are killed as final bosses.
In that context, it being a parent specifically that dies to set the plot in motion makes a lot of sense.
I think part of it is also so it doesn’t have to come up with an excuse for the older, more experienced royalty to not be out there kicking ass and fighting the war that the younger protagonist is dealing with.
Before watching the video, I think it's only Eliwood thats alive by the end of his son's game.
If sanikis mom is dead then mechiaes would be dead to sense they are sisters and she wasn't installed over a ten year old
Correct, we just unfortunately never learn enough about Misaha's daughter/Micaiah and Sanaki's mom to know the exact timeline of what happened between the time of the Serenes Massacre and Sanaki's birth, and what happened to her (probably the senate, lol).

Actually, that seems more likely; if Misaha had a daughter, why wouldn’t she have become the empress?
While not a main character exactly, I do think special mention should go to Jill. It's one of the few times you can get a character to commit Patricide or Matricide, when the parent isn't forced into being evil by evil magic. Instead, the two are just on different sides in a conflict, and they know each other as father and child.
Jill can be recruited by her father. The writers were very aware of that possibility.
We also have something like that in the last chapter of the first gen of FE4.
All this tells me is that Engage is just fates but with a "you can copy my homework but please change it up a little bit" twist
Even if she not his biological mother, Leif says that Eyvel was like a mother for him and because she can be saved in the chapter 24x, she can also be considered like a living parent if she survive in the end of Thracia 776.
So we can says Leif is a lucky boy because in the end, he has not just a adoptive living mother, a sister and because Eyvel turns out to be Brigid, he also had a 2 half-sisters and one half-brother. A big happy familly, indeed.
And like Roy and Eliwood, Leif doesn't have great stat but this is compensated by the fact that he can celebrate the victory at the end with a parent alive.
To be fair Leif already lost 3 parental figure, (Quan, Ethlyn and Lachesis (though Kaga's notes says Lachesis survived)).
p/s You could potentially add a few more adopted siblings depending on who you pair Finn up with, also how would you define Arion-Leif's relationship ?
Theses games may not be cannon but in Fire Emblem Warriors, Rowan's and Liana's father is dead and their mother was almost killed. In Fire Emblem Heroes, Alphonse's and Sharena's father is also killed and could consider both in an alternate universe where Alphonse is Lif which sacrifice everything with Death (Hel)
I dare IS to open a game with a battle with a grizzled old warrior and their young child, only for the child to die and giving you control of the vengeful parent (who may need to be wounded in the battle to depower them a bit)
I will die on the hill that Jeralt could've been a far more interesting and resonant protagonist than Byleth ever was.
The jaded veteran dragged back to Garreg Mach, trying to shield his child from the archbishop's unknown schemes, teaching and protecting a band of amateur officers with a great deal of weight on their young shoulders.
Would've been a great chance to not only better characterise Jeralt but also explore the story's themes through his character arc.

Eliwood the only Fire Emblem protagonist to get to keep there parents by the end of the game. Well that and Claude, I'd count the House Leaders as a main characters. The routes you side with them are there story, with you just being an ally to make it happen. Like Robbin to Chrom.
Yeah Claude specifically states neither of his parents have died after Jeralt is killed. Even speaks about them in post time-skip supports.
I knew the death count was going to be big, still surprised by the final count for MC's with 1 parent still alive. RIP beloved parents. Shout out to Greil and Jeralt who had enough screen time to be our in game parents before they passed.
Claude is actually the winner here. He IS a main character, a bit odd you didn't include the house leaders.
But it is confirmed by Claude and I guess Count Bergleaz that Claude's father is alive.

What can I say, the Marquesses of Pherae are just built different. Thus making Eliwood the strongest lord in Fire Emblem due to surviving becoming the parent of a main character.

This was a really solid video, and I think the way it was presented was very nice and digestible. It's unfortunate how many parents die, but damn if it isn't funny. Was also really accurate to my knowledge, which I'll admit I'm a bit surprised at, given how much of the series this is covering. Can't believe it has so few views.
About Sigurd's mother though - I'll acknowledge it was potentially a translation thing, but in his end chapter 4 conversation with Rahna, he does outright say his mother died when he was young.

I've never really thought too deeply about how many parents died over the course of the series, mainly because parents of main characters dying is not just common in Fire Emblem but many other characters.
When you look at the world of Fire Emblem, it makes sense why parents would be at risk of getting killed as many have significant influence or power. If Greil had survived his battle with the BK, the story would've been quite different.
I do definitely feel Ninian was the intended wife for Eliwood, for obvious reasons, and because it explains why Roy's mother is no longer present in FE6, as Nils stated she wouldn't live for long if she stayed in Elibe.
Also glad someone noticed that Garon was dead prior to Fates, for some reason that's something that people don't realize. Even with it pretty much being directly stated. Also interesting, his death takes place after Arete's (which partially implies that her death is what leads to Garon's possession by Anankos).

For me, FE Fates' paternal death, had a biggest tug of the heart. Just wish there were more chapters before the death to make more of a connection like FE PoR.
FE SoV had a great storyline with Alm parental figure. Full voice acting the made the final conversation between the two more impactful.

The 3H lords not being included is a little silly parents for them are El: Dead, Dimitri: Dead, Claude: Alive and Unknown.
Edelgard's mother is maybe still alive, but probably dead and replaced
I wanted to point out Micaiah as well, as her parents being dead is technically a relatively important plot point.
Shocked you didn't include the three houses lords
Shame that Lumera tried to speedrun her way to the top of the dead parents list. I think it would have maybe done wonders for the storey and her character if she at least sticked around till chapter 11. Making a heroic sacrifice against Sombron and the four hounds at the chapel there would have given her a more dignified ending and a better explanation why the group could just run out of their trap.

Incredible video. Although I figured Eliwood would technically be the winner here since he’s still living in Roy’s game (and Elenora still alive in his). Jeralt’s death still hit me hard though; I actually cried too especially when Jeralt’s like “you’re crying for me” to Byleth. Man.

This is an amazing video your editing is superb and your narration is also very well done, I also like that Seliph and Leif's parents are the main reason they even start their journey, because, not only they want revenge but also want to take over Alvis, Fates families are also some pretty weird and messed up stuff because of the weird connections it has.
While it is a pretty funny meme, it should be noted that not every parental death serves as a motivation, or the catalyst for the protagonist to act. In many cases the protagonist was already in the process of doing their thing.
Byleth as an example was already investigating Those Who Slither in the Dark before they murdered Jeralt.
Obviously this also applies to characters who's parents were already dead or were evil.
Even the Warriors MCs can't catch a break either lol
We just outright never see Rowan and Lianna's dad (and their mom is presumed dead for a chunk of the game)
Shez's biological parents are never known and his adoptive mom is dead before the events of the game too
I am just going to cover the three house leaders:
Edelgard:
Anselmas/Patricias death is not quite certain. She is presumed dead after the tragedy of duscur, but some evidence suggests she made it out alive. It is not clear what her faith is, but one can assume she died sometime before the game (Cornelia mentions she is dead in three hopes, but that is a different timeline).
Emperor Ionius IX is only seen in one cutscene where he mentions that he 'does not have much time left' and I believe there is one line in the game that mentions that he died. So it can be reasonably believed that he dies at some point during the time skip.
Dimitri:
Birth mother (I am not sure she is ever given a name) dies to the plague of faerghus before the game
King Lambert is killed in the tragedy of Duscur before the game.
Dimitris step-mother is Anselma/Patricia
Claude:
Both Tiana von Riegan and the King of Almyra are still alive by the end of the game.
Unpopular opinion you should've included the 3 house lords (edelgard, claude and dimitri), alfonse and kiran. the 3 house lords definetly have large portions of hte game revolving around them and there are arguments to be made that heroes is a mainline game despite being on mobile.
Well in heroes, there is Gustav. Who gets killed soon after being introduced in book 3. Then you kill him again as a zombie. Then you rekill zombie Gustav in book 6. No one acknowledges it, despite Alfonse claiming a little before that he killed his father. Henriette lives. For now. this may change in current book since they dragged her back into relevance.
Dimitri's parents are notoriously dead.
Edelgard's mom, who is also Dimitri's, is presumably dead before the story. Her dad was alive at least before timeskip, but probably died after.
Claude's parents are fine, seemingly.

We don’t know what happened to Anselma as the game never gives an answer on what happened to her. And if it did, it would have been inconsistent due to how much AM and AG love to chop and change details in general for no clear reason.
Ionius is implied dead. He makes it clear in WC that he hasn’t got much time left. With there being a line in CF which canonical say he dies. While in SB, we know he also still dies through Edelgard support with Bernadette.

It should be noted that as of writing this Lumera is still alive in the manga adaptation of engage making her Schrödinger fire emblem parent
How far along is the manga? I hear Chapter 11 cited as the best place for a heroic sacrifice, so I guess more specifically I should be asking if it's past that (or its analogue) and, if so, if there's still an obvious way for her to die.
@@randomguy-tg7ok it’s at 10 chapters rn I believe and they’re in the Brodie portion of the game so there’s still plenty of time for Lumera to die especially given how much it’s deviating from the games story but I don’t see a way that chapter 11 will be where she dies in the manga cause I just don’t see why Lumera would even be there at all on a narrative level other than to die which I don’t believe they’ll do anyway, if they wanted Lumera to die early on then they’d have just done what the game did, that’s just my thoughts on it though. If I’m proven wrong and she does die in chapter 11 then I’ll end up looking pretty dumb lol
I personally have a triple Venn diagram of fathers that physically appear in FE with the categories: Deployable, Dastard, and Dead. Note that I only apply this to the dads we actually see, so those mentioned only in supports and backstory don't apply. I used to think that the only exception to this was Eliwood prior to the release of Blazing Blade, until I learned that he's actually playable in the bonus modes of Binding Blade.
I believe it was in some CD but supposedly Alm’s mom was alive when he marched on Rigel. Never said but hinted at I believe, I just read a translation around a year ago.

Ya know? It would be interesting if you turned this into a series were you go game by game checking how many parents survive it fully. You could even make a full version at the end of the series were you tally them all in order.

Fire emblem path of radiance and radiant dawn : Ike's friend Soren have both his parents appearing. one dying in the first game the other being alive at the end of the second one.

Lilith dies in two thirds of Fates' routes. For entirely contrived and arbitrary reasons, but that's par for the course in Fates.

Going to add Alfonse and Sharena, Rowan and Liana, and Shez because I care:
Alfonse and Sharena (Heroes): Their father was killed by Hel in Book 3. Their mother is still alive as of Book 8’s 3rd chapter.
Rowan and Liana (Warrior): Their father died prior to the events of the game and their mother is survives.
Shez (Three Hopes): His/Her parents died when they were little. They had an adopted mother who passed prior to the game.
Also, for Rowan and Liana being the most forgettable lords, ironically enough, their some of the only ones with a remaining parent still alive

Shoutout to ike because we see both his parents, though admittedly his mom only in flashback. But at least we see, and heck she's even story relevant somewhat
I mean there's a lot of small details here and there, like marth's mother, etc.
Its funny because after you put fates and engage side by side its really funny, the mother dies in the main story early on, then is revived and you have to fight her, and then you fight the father in the final chapter.
Roy and eliwood is kinda hilarious, though roy's mother is already passed before the story starts, and the role of dead parent goes to lilina and hector instead. While for eliwood, elbert still dies yeah, though his is a bit different since its onscreen, but not quite as dramatic as some of the others.
Arguably could have added a few more characters to the list, like the 3h trio as well

For anyone who hasn’t played fates-whenever what he’s saying cuts off with a sound effect he’s saying the name of a country in the game called “Valla”. In the game, if anyone talks about valla outside of it, they instantly die, which is the game’s excuse for revelations having a wildly different story from the other two. It’s such a silly plot beat it’s become a joke across the whole fan base to censor it, like typing out V*lla or bleeping it out in videos like this

I have a fan theory that whatever illness killed Hector's parents also infected Hector, but he survived and became a transmissable carrier.
A majority of the people close to Hector (his brother, his best friend, his wife, and his best friend's wife) all either die young of illness or get very sick to the point that he can't fight in a major war.
I know disease is probably pretty common in the FE verse but the sheer scale of how many people around Hector get sick I feel like something is going on
It's likely just a genetic disease that Hector luckily didn't have.
