Hi im a nintendo switch player and im planning to buy for first time the rog ally X im working hard and saving money to buy it on klarna app and im so excited to play ps2 wii game cube and all games from any consoles 😊.
As a lifelong PC and tech tweaker there’s nothing better than having a full windows machine in something like this. Can run even non gaming tasks with ease
I switched from the SteamDeck and I've been on this one for one week. My lady and I were playing BG3 the other day, and I can honestly say the differences of playability were insane. I can successfully play act 3 with little to no frame drops
Steam deck is good. I extended the life by using windows OS and using an app called lossless scaling it allows frame generation. So with AAA games running low 30fpa. The frame generation can allow it to run at mid and 60fps. It's like night and day couldn't believe it.
On my old one, I had to do turbo constantly to play games as 15w wasn’t enough. 17w which is the new performance mode on the Ally X is great and I use it for all my games. Thanks guys! It took longer than I hoped, but I got my X and have had a glorious week with it! All the hardware and software improvements make this the best thing I will hold in my hands until I become a father!!
Another great video! So many great points! I was trying to decide between the Ally X and the Steam Deck and thanks to you guys I have made my decision.. now I just need to find $800...

It is all about perspective. My reason for buying my ROG Ally X is having a portable gaming console and a docked laptop. I justified the price on the basis that- this is my PC, not a handheld I have in addition to my PC. I genuinely sold my 4090 rig to use this and haven't looked back.
You should have kept the 4090 so you could use the external gpu feature the console has so you can still connect to your monitor or TV and play games at 4k. I use a 7900XTX with mine. Great addition.
@@jimmytimber7074 honestly my life is just too up in the air to have a big heavy thing- i can barely fit games in edgewise even being handheld, but i hope to eventually enjoy a great rig too!
Yea I was gonna buy it still isn't power enough. Apps lossless scaling aka frame generation can extend your steam decks life if you have windows on it. Only reasoning didn't buy the ally x. I'll wait till something truly powerfully comes out.
@illogik yea no see any reason to upgrade. Lossless scailing has been a game changer for power and getting 60fps. I also don't care about the screen. Not worth buying a whole new deck for just a screen. The ally rog x is a bigger upgrade for me. But $800 is a bit much when I can already enjoy the games now.
@@NatsumeKonno but there are definitely games you can play on rog ally that you can’t on steam deck. If you’re fine with that then cool but at least be honest about it. Just say “yeah I just don’t care I’m missing out on those games.”
@illogik I'm not missing out because I have windows on my steam deck. I duel boot my system and mainly running windows with lossless scailing. I use steam os fo geforce now and low powered games for best battery life.
I might be the only weirdo in the world that actually enjoys setting up windows, getting updates, removing pre-installed junk, changing essential settings and so on... but I can totally see how it can be a turn-off for most people. In fact, not just the initial Windows set up that takes 2-3 hours, I'd say it takes 2-3 days to fully dial everything in.
I'm actually one of those weirdos, I get enjoyment from messing around for ages but I totally get AJ's point of view from a console gamers perspective and I do think on a gaming aimed handheld they could make Windows tailored more towards that. - Andy
@@jj454 Well, I'm happy to know it's not that weird. Another habit I have is keeping some games, that I don't even play, but open from time to time just to mess with settings and see if I can make it run/look better or worse and how it affects my hardware, like Cyberpunk 2077, I really only played maybe 6-7 hours of the actual game, and have dozens of hours just running around seeing how it runs as I tinker with settings 🤣
The Battery is nice but the extra ram is the biggest improvement as no more hitching and games bugging out due to low system ram, that said if I could have gotten a 24GB Legion go I would have got that without even considering this. I'll take a bigger 16:10 higher refresh rate better looking screen screen that has 1:1 1280x800 over VRR plus touch pad on the LLG and SD are so very needed as the mouse by analogue is crap (I just got a dock and use keyboard and mouse with a monitor as the screen is not the best for windows text). But I have both now so Ally X for games that are a pain with 16GB of shared RAM and LLG for everything else.
Ive had my ally x since release ... first handheld coming from a ps5 and i can say i definitely love the ally x apart from all the glitching from windows like the game just closing down mid game and freezing, the rgb stick lights just turning off when they want.. the fact i couldnt even get into windows because of a password error code 😒 😑 but like i said... i still love this thing lol. Worth it 100%
Playing witcher 3 at high setting with a perceptible 60fps on a handheld was crazy. For some reason it's making me want to play games I wouldn't have bothered with. I'm not sure if its because I can lounge anywhere with the system-its amazing.
I can't believe you never mentioned Bazzite either!? It has absolutely changed the game and definitely swayed my decision between the Ally X & the Deck...
That's because this video is about our experience with the X and Bazzite isn't something we're personally interested in. It's a great option for people that want it but we have the Deck OLED for that.
I’ve been gaming so many more hours ever since I got my rog ally x. I tend to grab my ally instead of my phone now! I’ve played Ghostwire and The Callisto Protocol within a week. Love this thing!
The Ally screen is interesting it’s not OLED but the blacks still look black. It’s barely noticeable it’s not OLED. When I had the OG deck there was light coming all out the edges
I got mine for $100 off and my only complaint is the speakers they lack the bass and loud volume of the OG. Otherwise it feels like a total upgrade across the board! It's technically not a performance boost but the increased ram speed and total ram does make games FEEL stable.
My mind was blown playing Avatar Frontiers of Pandora at 900p locked 30fps! I was able to play Red Dead Redemption 2 at turbo mode in the high 50s for fps for over 3 hours of gameplay on battery! It's nuts!
Loving my ROG Ally X. I’m new to PC/ Steam etc and have been having a few Bluetooth issues the last couple of days though. Bluetooth just stops working and once the whole system appeared to lose all knowledge that it was capable of it. Anyone else suffered this?
It's over 300% more expensive than a SD here, before taxes. The battery life is so tempting, but gonna wait for gen 2 handhelds. Just way too much money. And 3 SDs would actually have more battery between them.
@@Rspsand07 the SD runs at roughly 1.6 teraflops compared the the ally x 8.6 tflops. 15 watt sd compared to 30 watt for ally x. It makes sense that the ally x would cost more. OLED SD is 449. Ally x is 799. My statement is still true. Gotta pay to play.
@@tommieboi707 Ally X is not oled. The lcd is 249$. tflops is meaningless, so are the 4 extra cores because the GPU gets saturated way too fast. In fact they need less CPU in both the z1 extreme and the SD and more GPU. Is more watts supposed to be good? It's a handheld lol. Part of that is the more powerful z1 extreme, but part of it is that it's a less efficient chip so it needs more wattage for less relative performance. You can see this if you try to run indie or older games at 3-6 watts on the Ally vs the Steam Deck. It won't work as well on the ally because it's not enough juice to run it. Part of it is also all the extra useless cores sucking up power. And I never said the Ally is worse. It is 20-50% better depending on game. But it is like 320% more expensive. Just not worth it when in 6 months we'll be getting announcements of Strix Halo handhelds. Strix Halo is projected to be as good as a 4070. But that's the laptop version, we'll see the handheld one.
Haven't finished the video yet, but in case it hasn't been mentioned. I had an annoying problem with constant vibration in games like Destiny2. I did see an update in armoury to version 10 I believe will correct this. Could get confirmation though.
Love my oled but I think the same when on my ally x don't notice I get that into the game only issue I've had is with rumble started a couple days when showing or anything it would constantly rumble I got a message from asus to do a mcu upgrade then all fixed so very happy
Oh we're not complaining about that, it's more the fact this is a gaming handheld yet Windows 11 still pushes One Drive, Office365 and all that crap on install. For a gaming system it would be cool to have Windows debloated immediately, which then gives people the choice to manually install all that if they want to use it as a workstation too.
Audio is underrated when it comes to gaming experiences. A good LCD panel with amazing sound is way more important than OLED with awful sound. Yes, I'm looking at you Nintendo 😆
I got an ALLy X and the worst part for me was that I wanted to upgrade the SSD and you need to have the battery under 25% to replace it so i had to leave it running until it finally got there... That battery really does make a big difference!!! i love this thing
If you are lucky and get one that works. Man the reviews are pretty rough from dead pixels to broken triggers and some that will not even turn on. I decided to wait.
I currently own a Steam Deck oled which I brought a month ago, and I’m having a blast. If I played a lot of first person shooters or had gamepass I would have sold my Oled Deck and purchased the ally X.
I truly believe ASUS did it , they made a great legit improvement on portable PC gaming . It’s HERE FOLKS !!! It gets better and better from here let’s just hope prices don’t skyrocket LOL
Listened to rest today: couldn't agree more. Windows on handheld is bad. That said, Bazzite Os and Win11 dual boot. Best of both worlds! Cant recommend it enough. Have you tried Bazzite yet?
I've been having a few issues that would like to know if others have. Playing Valhalla, the first time I used the attack, the rumble would go automatically and didn't stop. I had to turn it off manually so I could play. Then, after a couple of days everything started working properly without any intervention of mine. At the end of the first week I turned it on and only the touchscreen would work. No buttons, sticks or rgb lights. Restarted it twice and nothing changed. Had to use the touchscreen to get into the manager and change the default controller to get the buttons back on GamePad Mode, but no rgb lights. Those only came back after reboot. But turning the machine on and nothing worked except the screen really buged me. And lately things seem to turn on and off on its own. Like the Armory Crate opening up in the middle of the game without me touching any button. So all that makes me feel like there is something wrong with the manual controls hardware. Is there anybody going through the same experience??
I did experience the first 2 issues you went through with the rumble not stopping when playing games and at one point only my touch screen was working. These problems have seen to gone away though. I tend to update the armoury crate app when I can. I think that will help with these kinds of issues
Upgraded my ally x to a 2tb ssd this weekend. I did partition it to dual boot with bazzite but there’s a few quirks with that so went back to 1 partition with windows
I really enjoyed your video! The ASUS ROG Ally X is an impressive and powerful gaming portable machine, and your review highlighted its strengths well. However, I find Windows not as smooth for gaming compared to console operating systems. I hope they will fix this in the future. Thanks for sharing your insights!
I totally understand that, it's definitely not as smooth as a console or Steam Deck like experience. Hopefully Microsoft can create a more streamlined experience in the future.
@@128KB thanks but sorry 1 more question, if i’m at outside. Want to play games. Do i need to connect to wifi? Because some game their service, like ubisoft or rockstar launcher, like hitman need to connect their server.. Can i play game without connect wifi?
Loving it. I rarely run armoury crate. Use it exactly the same as as my PC. Emulation from desktop and games from desktop. Would like a new ssd but apprehensive, don't want to break the battery connector. I've also just sold my Steam deck oled 1tb. So I've a few hundred sat waiting. So the SSD would be great if I dare do it. Which I doubt I will.
If you're worried about the SSD upgrade, just get a large microSD card and load all your emulated/retro titles from that, keeping your stock SSD for AAA games etc.
@@128KB I've now sold my Steam deck oled. So I've installed Yuzu and Emudeck on the SD card I already had. I've also kept my hub. But ordered a 100watt battery.
@@angelicstreaming3997 hi, no not until just now to see if I needed to set up a game profile to make it work. I see no global setting for the whole system. I’m at a loss here
If they bring an oled version out I want the screen pushed right out. No bezzles, or give me an 8 inch screen. My old eyes ain’t what they used to be 🤦🏼
Speaking of console gaming: how does PC gaming work with multiple user accounts? I.e. multiple people wanting to play Fortnite on their own accounts. Separate Windows accounts and a shared steam/epic/game install?
As someone who only wants a handheld for emulation, the Steam Decks 16:10 aspect ratio is so much better suited for scaling retro games than the Ally Xs 16:9 screen.
Keep an eye out, I may do a hall effect swap in the future. Currently I'm actually liking the stock sticks thumbstick caps but may swap them when I do the hall swap. We've got some more guides/accessories videos lined up too.
Being able to play games with all the pc mods, with the portability of a nintendo switch is truly game changing for me. I have a ROG STRIX gaming laptop and i originally got that to take away. But now i got a meta quest 3 headset and loads of other stuff as well as a few upgrades, it got to the point where it wasn’t worth risking taking it away anymore. Having the Ally X, small enough to just sling into my hand luggage and game on the airplane to work, thats truly amazing. Plus, if you buy a portable foldable keyboard and a travel mouse, you literally have a compact capable pc for business use which is only slightly bigger than a switch. I love it.
Skeptical on getting 2.5 hours on 25w. When I play games at performance (17w) my overall wattage draw is around 25-28w which gets me around 2.5 hours. When I crank it up to turbo (25w) it’s around 40-46w getting less than 2 hours. I wonder if I’m doing something wrong LOL
@@Excronix shouldn't total system power be around 33w when running at 25w turbo mode??? 40-46 would be for sure get you less than 2.5 hours, maybe your right, maybe these youtubers are giving a bit of misinformation, need to watch more video before aboarding ally x ship
@@maxxyize earlier today I played starfield at 17w and the system overlay said the battery drainage was at 27w the whole time and it fluctuated a bit but I’m assuming that is total system power. I have nice pc with 4090 gpu (build myself and pick each piece unique) and have triple 43” 4K Sim. Race cockpit. I realize I did not use my whole system often anymore and I just play games on my ipad like wildrift etc. I’m thinking to get this one and sold my whole setup already have but I am not sure to pay 800 bucks (which is more expensive here with taxex like 1000$) and play games low settings for that money. If the price was 500$ I wasn’t think that. I already think to get to a cheaper steam deck and stream on my pc but this time battery will be problem. For to be objectively this price is too much for handled isn’t it?
I would say don't sell your rig. I have a 4080 and no way in hell I would get rid of it for the X. I like the X but if I'm home I hop on my rig usually and the performance is obviously a lot better. I think it's worth 800 honestly. 800 bucks isn't what it used to be. Everyone complains about the price and they seem to forget about this crazy inflation we have experienced. The rog ally x is a beast for a handheld but that's it you're not gonna be blown away by its performance. I'll take 100 fps or more at 1440p over the x performance any day. I did side load afmf2 on my x and it's pretty impressive but it's fake frames and can be buggy. Handheld world isn't replacing a desktop anytime soon. Maybe 10 years.
I came from console as well but I'm a techy person and it hasn't been too bad to be honest but.......I booted bazzite and now it's dual boot with windows and steam OS and I only use windows for game pass now but it's literally a steam deck 2!!!
What’s the experience like when docking with a monitor setup? I’m selling my old Desktop PC and moving strictly to handheld for a while, I know sometimes I will still want to do the desk setup.
That's the dumbest decision ever lol you are selling your desktop for a rog?! I would never sell my pc for a rog. Do u know how much more powerful my pc is vs these handhelds? Wow some weirdos on youtube lol
@@redcrimson1028 Bro why you so hateful 😂 there’s multiple factors that went into that decision that you don’t know. I’ll probably eventually to back to a desktop at some point. Until then, If you’re looking for weirdos, visit your local Walmart.
@@redcrimson1028still, its not necessarily a bad idea. Depending on his specs and demands a handheld can be quite nice. I have a pretty nice rig that I use most of the time, but trust me, there isn’t anything better than laying down in a couch or a bed playing with a handheld. The only problems still are the compromises you have to do, but with each new console it gets better.
@@redcrimson1028You don't even know the specs of his desktop and yet you claim it's more powerful. I have a gaming laptop that's 7 years old, bought in 2017, and it can no longer handle modern AAA games because the GTX 1050 only has 4GB of VRAM. Modern AAA games like Ratchet and Clank, which are designed for PS5, require more than 4GB of VRAM. That's why I bought the ROG Ally, and it handles these games well even at 1080p. The 16GB RAM on the Ally is shared; I set 8GB for the GPU and 8GB for the CPU, which is why it works and plays great. Plus, it has VRR. My brother in law also has desktop and his ally is more powerful than his old desktop.
I agree the set up was annoying and I knew what was going to happen and still got bombarded with office 365 and onedrive stuff which I shall be removing when I do next use the machine lol. Also I downloaded Deep Rock Galactic so next game for us to have a go at playing together?
Yeah frustrating! Oh nice! I bought it on sale too but Christina hasn't got it and don't think AJ has it though! I'll give it a go and see if I can convince Christina to want to play it too.
Windows does suck ! MS really need to sort something out here maybe a similar os setup like steam os. I have mine boot straight into steam big picture mode. Not the most elegant by any means.
Really depends what you'll get most use out of. If you're just gaming on the big screen probably stick with the PS5 but if handheld is important to you, ALLY X is epic. We've got a podcast coming out on 128KB Podcast channel this Wednesday answer the question "is Ally X better than console" may be worth giving that a watch!
If you have always been on console just stick with your PS5. The ally is a PC and windows can be janky A.F. I love my X but it's not for everyone. PC is a lot of tinkering.
Guys clearly there is a difference between OLED and IPS… 7:00 to 9:00 in the video was just a load of nonsense. The Steam Deck OLED is a night and day difference, anyone with common sense and understands panel technology would know this.
You really don’t notice it all I’ve just swapped from my oled deck to the ally x although yes there may be slightly differences in black levels the screen on the ally x is significantly better for a gaming experience vrr is a game changer and aj and Andy are bang on
Of course there's a difference between OLED & LCD, that's why we said we were hesitant about how good the ALLY/X would be before getting hands on. Until you see the ALLY/X's screen in person, it really isn't as big of a leap as you'd expect and VRR is a game changer as Sam above said.
I have both , sorry before I would say definitely steam deck Oled , now the ally x wins . Not a fan boy but the ally x was what the original should have been .
@128KB I have a both rogs, and the screen doesn't come close to the deck, hell, it doesn't ev3n come close to the switch oled. Also the screen on the rog isn't very bright. U have to turn the brightness all the way up to even see especially if you are outside.
Why does the guy on the right consistently say yeah, yep, yes, yes, yes, after every single thing the guy on the left says, why can't he just listen and then answer.... it's so frustrating. Just let the guy speak, for £#@£ sake.
I've had mine for a few days and they are correct ...they nailed this device and the performance is insane for what it is.....I haven't touched my consoles since I bought it
They missed a trick here. They could have at least made the screen 7.4 if anything else. That’s the only reason I wont get one. & inch screen is just too small

Yea I was gonna buy it still isn't power enough. Apps lossless scaling aka frame generation can extend your steam decks life if you have windows on it. Only reasoning didn't buy the ally x. I'll wait till something truly powerfully comes out.
@@NatsumeKonnodamn you still on lcd
- Andy
@@BETEP-gw7qp maybe I’m a nerd but I find a huge amount of enjoyment in doing all that sort of stuff. Maybe even as much as playing games 😂
@@BETEP-gw7qpme too bro
Just ordered mine. Felt justified since it's my first handheld pc. Excited to finally try it! 😁
Hope you love it!
Mine has arrived still following your guide maybe tomorrow I will get to play a game lol
Worth it 100%
Bah that's really frustrating :( luckily we've not had those issues. Hope you're sorted now though!
Playing witcher 3 at high setting with a perceptible 60fps on a handheld was crazy. For some reason it's making me want to play games I wouldn't have bothered with. I'm not sure if its because I can lounge anywhere with the system-its amazing.
Exactly how we feel!
Just been playing assassin creed Valhalla! It really is insane how well it plays
Just started Valhalla last night. What a game!!!
Oooooh I forgot I've got that and not played it yet, may have to install!!
@@128KB I was so amazed that after 2 hours of gameplay, i had like 20% battery left! That was the coolest part
The VRR is insane, was getting 70Fps on BOIII zombies handheld mode and felt like 100 on a regular screen
Well duh!!! You can't compare a cell phone to a console ot even a dedicated handheld. Gaming on a cell phone is the worst thing ever.
I will be picking one up this week can’t wait coming from Xbox
The Ally screen is interesting it’s not OLED but the blacks still look black. It’s barely noticeable it’s not OLED. When I had the OG deck there was light coming all out the edges
Exactly!! Couldn't agree more.
It's nuts!
it is absolutley insane!!

Screen is so small, that's the issue I have with mine, its a real regression from the Legion Go
I just sold my legion go and got myself a X. I’m a bit concerned about the smaller screen, but I’m hoping I’ll get used to it soon.
Damn I’m looking at my legion go with a side eye now
Why are you cheating on ur handheld
I got a open box at Best Buy for $680
Nice
I got one on base for $650 tax free
Loving my ROG Ally X. I’m new to PC/ Steam etc and have been having a few Bluetooth issues the last couple of days though. Bluetooth just stops working and once the whole system appeared to lose all knowledge that it was capable of it. Anyone else suffered this?
It's over 300% more expensive than a SD here, before taxes.
The battery life is so tempting, but gonna wait for gen 2 handhelds. Just way too much money. And 3 SDs would actually have more battery between them.
Ally x is the most powerful gaming handheld on the market. Gotta pay to play.
@@tommieboi707 By a little for 300% more money. Not worth. Strix halo is coming in 2025
@@Rspsand07 the SD runs at roughly 1.6 teraflops compared the the ally x 8.6 tflops.
@@tommieboi707lol
Haven't finished the video yet, but in case it hasn't been mentioned. I had an annoying problem with constant vibration in games like Destiny2. I did see an update in armoury to version 10 I believe will correct this. Could get confirmation though.
Love my oled but I think the same when on my ally x don't notice I get that into the game only issue I've had is with rumble started a couple days when showing or anything it would constantly rumble I got a message from asus to do a mcu upgrade then all fixed so very happy
I don't understand how people have pc, laptop yet complain about windows handheld. I like to tweak settings , I enjoy optimisation.
Its faster to Tweak settings with mouse and Keyboard
So this over Steam Deck OLED? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
of cause
Playing black myth wukong at my construction job on lunch break above 60fps is worth the price to me.
Lies of P is literally gorgeous on this device.
Audio is underrated when it comes to gaming experiences. A good LCD panel with amazing sound is way more important than OLED with awful sound. Yes, I'm looking at you Nintendo 😆
Good point!
I got an ALLy X and the worst part for me was that I wanted to upgrade the SSD and you need to have the battery under 25% to replace it so i had to leave it running until it finally got there... That battery really does make a big difference!!! i love this thing
Who told you that? And why?
That’s a first. Why would the battery need to be nearly empty? Just make sure it is disconnected and you’ll be fine.
Safer to just disconnect the battery is usually what to do. It's like unplugging your desktop when you touch anything on the motherboard.

Hi, sorry i want to ask. So if i have this, i can use the device to editing photo too? Like adobe..

Could it be that you setup a game profile? There's a setting there
@@angelicstreaming3997 hi, no not until just now to see if I needed to set up a game profile to make it work. I see no global setting for the whole system. I’m at a loss here
If they bring an oled version out I want the screen pushed right out. No bezzles, or give me an 8 inch screen. My old eyes ain’t what they used to be 🤦🏼
That'll be ALLY 2 for sure
Speaking of console gaming: how does PC gaming work with multiple user accounts? I.e. multiple people wanting to play Fortnite on their own accounts. Separate Windows accounts and a shared steam/epic/game install?
As someone who only wants a handheld for emulation, the Steam Decks 16:10 aspect ratio is so much better suited for scaling retro games than the Ally Xs 16:9 screen.
100% SD is the way to go if you're only wanting to play emulated/retro titles.
Will we be getting any modding videos? Sticks and things?
Keep an eye out, I may do a hall effect swap in the future. Currently I'm actually liking the stock sticks thumbstick caps but may swap them when I do the hall swap. We've got some more guides/accessories videos lined up too.

Having the Ally X, small enough to just sling into my hand luggage and game on the airplane to work, thats truly amazing.

Skeptical on getting 2.5 hours on 25w. When I play games at performance (17w) my overall wattage draw is around 25-28w which gets me around 2.5 hours. When I crank it up to turbo (25w) it’s around 40-46w getting less than 2 hours. I wonder if I’m doing something wrong LOL
that wattage is only for the APU, so overall draw is always going to be higher. 40-46W sounds about right if the screen is on high brightness.
