For those who are not able to get it to work, i changed a little bit de chmod to make the .sh executable. First put a sudo and on the script itself, put a ./ before. sudo chmod +x ./windows.sh Thank you for your guide! And Russ for show to us.

Your advice led me to purchase a GPD Win 4, the best purchase I've made in years, but all your videos are well researched and unbiased, only The Phawx is comparable with honest opinions. You should make a stance against Nintendo for their borderline illegal actions against you, loss of earnings and mental distress, are legitimate concerns. A multinational corporation have no right to maliciously target you.

Thank you, Russ, for being about the only one remarking on the issue with the ergonomics. I have been struggling since day one with this device and ended up returning it due to major pain it caused in my pinky/ring fingers and wrists. I think the device isn’t balanced well and is way too heavy at the bottom on the unit which is why it caused me pain. I tried many different grips to no avail. It’s a real bummer too because this device does everything I want it to. I have zero issues with my Steam Deck OLED, however. Some devices just fit differently I guess. Glad you found some grips that work well. Keep up all the great work!
I was thinking of buying those 3D printed silicone grips for my original ROG ally. I went with skull and Co after reading some reviews, looking forward to seeing how it works. I have larger hands but agree with you that the slender silhouette of the grip area on the Rog Ally strains the hands.
I purchased the ROG Ally with the expectation of using it regularly, but here's my honest review: While it's a solid device, a gaming laptop offers a more practical and versatile experience. The ROG Ally falls short in a few key areas-it’s not as portable as anticipated, the battery life is limited, and using it as a desktop PC requires a separate hub, which isn't readily available where I live. Additionally, the device feels quite heavy for a handheld. I hope that someday we see a truly compact and lightweight device, similar to the Sony Xperia Play, but with the power and performance of the ROG Ally. btw i did use chatgpt to inhance and correct my writting
@@aaroneldreth You don't need a new SSD, more than enough space with the included 1TB SSD and a cheap SD card. And you only need adapters if you want to add a power bank or something, but the 80w battery is great on its own. And the Skull & Co case adds grips and stands up without a kickstand for $20. So about $900 with taxes altogether.

Why don't you partition the 4TB SSD so that you have a small amount of native file system for both of the OSs and then the remainder - i.e. most of the 4TB - formatted in a format that both Linux and Windows can read/write? Then you put your Steam library on there and let both OSs run their games from that point. You'll cut down duplication and make more room available for more games.
Written like a true Linux user lol. I like this idea though; I just ordered an Ally X specifically so I can dual boot it with Windows and Linux. Might give this a try.

It has Windows and Ubuntu set up for dual-boot for work reasons, both of which have Steam installed, and a huge exFat partition where Steam is configured on both OSs to install its games. I can boot up games regardless of which OS I'm using, and yet each game is only installed once. It works perfectly. :)

I couldn’t agree more with most of what you said here the biggest thing is do not trust those front plates. I bought a case exactly like that for my steam deck, and it did end up with a crack straight through the entire screen vertically. So be extremely cautious with those cases please.
You definitely make the Ally X look enticing. Ive been holding off since i havent really played anything that's maxed out my Oled Deck. But i do plan to get the X eventually. Sidenote, i bought that Mechanism pillow after your prior review video of it and i love it! Holding the Deck feels more like holding a comfortable lighter weight handheld with that pillow arm supporting from underneath.
As an Australian, now that the steam deck is officially released, i’m having a hard time justifying the $600 extra cost of the Ally X compared to the deck…
It is expensive, but after using an AllyX for a few months here in Aus, I just sold my Deck. I personally think it’s worth it, especially if you use it a replacement to a laptop. Battery Life and the VRR 120hz screen are the big ticket items for me. VRR seriously makes a huge difference for unsteady fps gaming. You’re paying a premium, but you do get a much more premium product over the Deck. The other thing is that Z1E chip, even without using Frame Generation, you can play most modern AAA titles at well above 30fps, whereas the Deck struggles a lot. The only complaint I have is I wish it had at least one Thumbpad like the Deck.

This is really tempting me again, I think the ally x is so cool... But I'm holding out and I hope they will combine it with the new AMD silicon next year to make it even more awesome... Getting it now and then in half a year a faster model comes out would suck. I know that's kind of always been the case, but actually hardware improvements are slowing down and I think the next chip will probably be it for a couple years again.
Of all the consoles I've bought, the Ally X has had by far the most impact. Does everything I wanted with respect to emulation and PC games, but does so much more too.
I think these handheld PCs are amazing. I just can't justify one right now. I'm still working through my Switch library and I have an Odin 2 (great for streaming from XSX/PS5) which satisfies my gaming needs right now. I think if there were a Steam Deck "lite" in the form factor of an Odin 2 I might pull the trigger on one.
Sell the Odin get an rog Ally z1e for around 350-400 used or open box then port all your switch games u really wanna play onto the Ally....u will 🚫 not regret it...I have a steam deck and rog Ally and they have changed my gaming habits completely. And it will feel like a big upgrade since u are use to a switch like I was. Pull the trigger 😂

One thing that's not really mentioned regarding the Killswitch vs the Modcase is that the Killswitch + cover is noticeably lighter than the Modcase. I wouldn't even consider these 2 to be at the same level qualitywise. The Killswitch is better than the Modcase in every way and I don't consider the modular attachment of the Modcase to be an advantage considering the weight of the Ally X. Believe me, you don't want to hang heavy powerbanks under the Ally X cuz the combined weight and bulk guarantees really short gaming sessions. If I even run out of battery on the Ally X I have a nice soft and supple Anker USB-C cable that's long enough to go from the Ally X to a powerbank in my back pocket.
I just miss the original ROG Ally white shell, matched all my Strix hardware perfectly. My entire PC uses white ROG Strix hardware and the aesthetic was perfect. I know I could put a white skin or something on it, but it's not the same
I might have to consider the grip for the Ally. I purchased one used that included the killswitch, but it doesn’t improve the depth of the grip like I thought it would. That leather case looks slick as well, although a bit out of my current budget
Mechanism has created an adapter for the Ally X Killswitch case, but it's not as straightforward as the Steam Deck adapter. You need to remove the pin holding the kickstand on and replace it with one that has the Mechanism interface. It's also only available as a 3D printed piece.
One thing to note, the ROG ALLY has been seen discounted down to $375 at Sam's Club a couple times already so look out for that if looking to save money, the differences with the new X model are there but are not really worth the extra $325.
This convinced me to get a future Rog Ally if it ever comes out in Oled. In the meantime I’m ok with my Steam Deck but so far dualboot setup dor Rog Ally looks pretty cool.

Not every game (I'd argue most games) needs your full attention, so it's a good way to get the game in and catch up on a show or movie or youtube or what have you. If I'm doing a dungeon in a JRPG, I don't need to be locked in while I'm solving rudimentary puzzles and fighting mobs.
2 storage related questions. 1. How much storage does the bazzite-Linux-steamOS use? 2. How much storage does the native windows 11 use? Trying to determine the internal SSD amount needed :)
Personally I find the feel and fit of the Ally X without a grip just perfect. Love the weight as well. Feels much better than the Ally non-X and Deck OLED I had before. I now have the Dbrand Killswitch on my Ally X and also love the feel of it as well as the added protection from it. I'm glad DBrand didn't make it more bulbous as the current grip already feels great, for me. Only thing I notice a bit more now is the added weight but it has not been enough to deter me from playing hours on end with the Ally and still not feeling hand fatigue.
I purchased the comfort grips on Etsy for my original ROG Ally. After a few months the locking clip broke off of one of the grips, rendering it non-functional. Hopefully they've updated the materials to make that locking clip more durable.

what made you get the original ally over steam deck? i understand the appeal of the ally x, but isn't the og ally not much better techwise & a good bit worse softwarewise than the sd?
Man, I would be very greatful if you could make a video of controller options for the Ally x that would allow me to use the command center buttons. I have tried a series X controller now I have a 8bitdo ultimate with the same issue. I know a lot of people are trying to figure this out as well since it really kills to docked mode when you have to get up to change settings or to force close a game etc. Thanks for reading, I hope this is something you would be willing to follow up and and help the community out with!
I don't get why brands just won't use the existing standard for attaching accessories like magsafe. It's way more versatile and a lot of accesories already made for it, and people can just use the magsafe accesories that they already have like powerbank or kickstand, you can even use the car mount for phone to play in car. My guess is because the ally or the accessories for it is probably too heavy for magsafe's use cases.
That's cool but why not do 3 partitions? 200gb for windows, 50 for bazzite or steam os, and then the rest as ntfs, ext4 or BTRFS storage? That way, you can have all your games in one spot.

The negative thing about dbrand Killswitches on the Steam Deck Killswitch V2 and the ROG Ally X KIllswitch is that since they have a huge lump at the back they aren't carrying case friendly. I'd rather have the Killswitch + Carrying Case than a Travel Case from dbrand.
I love the Rog Ally X (as an Rog Ally owner) but problem that I have is the release date of it. The Z2 extreme chips are set to be released next year and I'll be selling my ROG Ally for the actual new chips in a few months. Ally 2 I suppose. Hopefully they carry over battery capacity

Great video Russ! I know you used the original ROG ally as a desktop computer with their proprietary eGPU. Are you doing the same with this? My end game pc is a handheld that I can dual boot Bazzite and Windows that I can dock at my desk if I want a more powerful gaming experience but also completely replace my need for a desktop that can do some light web browsing, home lab tinkering and other light weight tasks. I’d love a video showing a ROG Ally X being a full desktop replacement with a thunderbolt 4 eGPU.
Can you make a video on how to setup the emulator. I get what it is but don't know a ton and seems a little scary I might download something bad. So a kinda intro and how to video would be amazing.
The one thing I wish they could do with these handhelds and I'm assuming there's a good reason nobody has is having a detachable battery so you could just switch to another when it dies, just have like a tiny internal one that can keep the system on long enough to switch.
The part that I do not know how to do is to add a game to the Steam library and then add the script to that game. I wish he had shown us how to do that in the video.

Hey Russ! Been a huge fan of yours a while. Quick thought: have you had a chance to try amd’s fluid motion frames on your ally x? More specifically, a technical preview of amd’s upcoming fluid motion frames 2 can be put onto the ally x. For me personally, it’s been a game changer. It’s taken games like Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild and transformed them into truly magical handheld experiences. It’s also the reason I spend more time in windows for AAA gaming since it does not work on bazzite. I’m curious to your thoughts! Is AMD FMF and more specifically FMF 2 a game changer?
I didnt pay much to the og when first game out cus didnt seem great but keep seeing alot of people repoing this as the best all around atm. I want the X but just ordered a z1x first for pretty cheap to makes sure i like it. May juat do the x battery mod and wait for the next model.
I just dualboot using my AllyX and my SDOLED. If I want to boot into SteamOS, I turn on my SteamDeck and if I want to boot into Win11 I turn on my AllyX :) another Great vid, thanks Russ.
14:06 I'm using the same (portable) grip. and very satisfied with the grip feeling! However, there is one problem. This product is fixed using the bottom part of the speaker grill, so there are make some scratches while installing and removing...:(

The scratches are only a few millimeters, but it is still a little annoying, but if I had to choose again, I think I would choose the grip over the heavy full case. anyway, I hope you can find a product you like.
Retro Game Corp is the reason I decided to get a Ally X, because of his Bazzite tutorial. I will forever be a Steam Decker. But want the flexibility to play most games one thing I can take away from this video is 3:35 this is a huge software upgrade!
I got the LCD deck and my mane gripe is the grips too. Its too damn heavy and the grips are too small for me to let me use it comfortably. My hands arent even that large, I just dislike using the thing due to the weight distribution. And given the device's lack of 3d horse power I ended mostly streaming to it from my beefy PC anyway, so I quickly realized I may aswell get a lighter device to stream my PC games too. The RG556 has scratched that itch so far, although the controls feel faaaarrr less premium. Trade offs everywhere!!!
Thanks for the video, Russ! I bought the same 4TB SSD and dual partitioned it following your guide. I just left 1TB for Windows (barely use it as its really awkward on a handheld device) and assigned 3TB to Bazzite. Also threw my old 1TB micro sd card in for emulation. Worked out very well. I got JSAUX case and although the alignment is a bit off on the top ports it works well and looks good for its price. I will look into installing Windows button in SteamOS. That seems very convenient. Do you get Bazzite text popups when you boot the machine?

As an Australian, now that the steam deck is officially released, i’m having a hard time justifying the $600 extra cost of the Ally X compared to the deck…
It is expensive, but after using an AllyX for a few months here in Aus, I just sold my Deck. I personally think it’s worth it, especially if you use it a replacement to a laptop. Battery Life and the VRR 120hz screen are the big ticket items for me. VRR seriously makes a huge difference for unsteady fps gaming. You’re paying a premium, but you do get a much more premium product over the Deck. The other thing is that Z1E chip, even without using Frame Generation, you can play most modern AAA titles at well above 30fps, whereas the Deck struggles a lot.
The only complaint I have is I wish it had at least one Thumbpad like the Deck.
@@willeh1947Honestly here in Aus I got the original rog ally and was pissed off by Asus so quickly releasing the ally x, I love my Ally but already the Steam Deck just feels better for me, I'd love the ally x but i don't want to give Asus more money to support that kind of behaviour.
would love to see you go over the rog ally z1 extreme and mod that, i hear you can replace the battery on it to make it last longer now too!
This is really tempting me again, I think the ally x is so cool... But I'm holding out and I hope they will combine it with the new AMD silicon next year to make it even more awesome... Getting it now and then in half a year a faster model comes out would suck. I know that's kind of always been the case, but actually hardware improvements are slowing down and I think the next chip will probably be it for a couple years again.
Of all the consoles I've bought, the Ally X has had by far the most impact. Does everything I wanted with respect to emulation and PC games, but does so much more too.
I think these handheld PCs are amazing. I just can't justify one right now. I'm still working through my Switch library and I have an Odin 2 (great for streaming from XSX/PS5) which satisfies my gaming needs right now. I think if there were a Steam Deck "lite" in the form factor of an Odin 2 I might pull the trigger on one.
Sell the Odin get an rog Ally z1e for around 350-400 used or open box then port all your switch games u really wanna play onto the Ally....u will 🚫 not regret it...I have a steam deck and rog Ally and they have changed my gaming habits completely. And it will feel like a big upgrade since u are use to a switch like I was. Pull the trigger 😂

I added expanded grips (3D-printed) to the Steamdeck too, made it soooo much more comfortable to hold.

One thing that's not really mentioned regarding the Killswitch vs the Modcase is that the Killswitch + cover is noticeably lighter than the Modcase. I wouldn't even consider these 2 to be at the same level qualitywise. The Killswitch is better than the Modcase in every way and I don't consider the modular attachment of the Modcase to be an advantage considering the weight of the Ally X. Believe me, you don't want to hang heavy powerbanks under the Ally X cuz the combined weight and bulk guarantees really short gaming sessions. If I even run out of battery on the Ally X I have a nice soft and supple Anker USB-C cable that's long enough to go from the Ally X to a powerbank in my back pocket.
I just miss the original ROG Ally white shell, matched all my Strix hardware perfectly. My entire PC uses white ROG Strix hardware and the aesthetic was perfect. I know I could put a white skin or something on it, but it's not the same

Man, the ROG Ally X is really attractive at this point. If there was an OLED option, I would sell my OLED Steam Deck in a heartbeat at this point.
I might have to consider the grip for the Ally. I purchased one used that included the killswitch, but it doesn’t improve the depth of the grip like I thought it would. That leather case looks slick as well, although a bit out of my current budget
Mechanism has created an adapter for the Ally X Killswitch case, but it's not as straightforward as the Steam Deck adapter. You need to remove the pin holding the kickstand on and replace it with one that has the Mechanism interface. It's also only available as a 3D printed piece.
One thing to note, the ROG ALLY has been seen discounted down to $375 at Sam's Club a couple times already so look out for that if looking to save money, the differences with the new X model are there but are not really worth the extra $325.
This convinced me to get a future Rog Ally if it ever comes out in Oled. In the meantime I’m ok with my Steam Deck but so far dualboot setup dor Rog Ally looks pretty cool.

Not every game (I'd argue most games) needs your full attention, so it's a good way to get the game in and catch up on a show or movie or youtube or what have you. If I'm doing a dungeon in a JRPG, I don't need to be locked in while I'm solving rudimentary puzzles and fighting mobs.
Stick a phone stand and place your phone in that. You can watch movies , play games

Would love the better grips with the protective case. Would be ideal for tossing into a backpack. Love the frontplate idea.
Personally I find the feel and fit of the Ally X without a grip just perfect. Love the weight as well. Feels much better than the Ally non-X and Deck OLED I had before. I now have the Dbrand Killswitch on my Ally X and also love the feel of it as well as the added protection from it. I'm glad DBrand didn't make it more bulbous as the current grip already feels great, for me. Only thing I notice a bit more now is the added weight but it has not been enough to deter me from playing hours on end with the Ally and still not feeling hand fatigue.

I purchased the comfort grips on Etsy for my original ROG Ally. After a few months the locking clip broke off of one of the grips, rendering it non-functional. Hopefully they've updated the materials to make that locking clip more durable.

Bro, I think you turned those levers backwards. When you put them on correctly you will see that those blue grips improve a lot!
They can be used either way, I forgot to mention it in the video but I prefer the setup I showed (and also just prefer not to use them!)
For protective screen, prefer use Matte protective screen for reduce screen reflection from lighting

what made you get the original ally over steam deck? i understand the appeal of the ally x, but isn't the og ally not much better techwise & a good bit worse softwarewise than the sd?

Man, I would be very greatful if you could make a video of controller options for the Ally x that would allow me to use the command center buttons. I have tried a series X controller now I have a 8bitdo ultimate with the same issue. I know a lot of people are trying to figure this out as well since it really kills to docked mode when you have to get up to change settings or to force close a game etc. Thanks for reading, I hope this is something you would be willing to follow up and and help the community out with!
I don't get why brands just won't use the existing standard for attaching accessories like magsafe. It's way more versatile and a lot of accesories already made for it, and people can just use the magsafe accesories that they already have like powerbank or kickstand, you can even use the car mount for phone to play in car. My guess is because the ally or the accessories for it is probably too heavy for magsafe's use cases.
That's cool but why not do 3 partitions? 200gb for windows, 50 for bazzite or steam os, and then the rest as ntfs, ext4 or BTRFS storage? That way, you can have all your games in one spot.

The negative thing about dbrand Killswitches on the Steam Deck Killswitch V2 and the ROG Ally X KIllswitch is that since they have a huge lump at the back they aren't carrying case friendly. I'd rather have the Killswitch + Carrying Case than a Travel Case from dbrand.

I love the Rog Ally X (as an Rog Ally owner) but problem that I have is the release date of it. The Z2 extreme chips are set to be released next year and I'll be selling my ROG Ally for the actual new chips in a few months. Ally 2 I suppose. Hopefully they carry over battery capacity

I know you used the original ROG ally as a desktop computer with their proprietary eGPU. Are you doing the same with this? My end game pc is a handheld that I can dual boot Bazzite and Windows that I can dock at my desk if I want a more powerful gaming experience but also completely replace my need for a desktop that can do some light web browsing, home lab tinkering and other light weight tasks.
I’d love a video showing a ROG Ally X being a full desktop replacement with a thunderbolt 4 eGPU.

Can you make a video on how to setup the emulator. I get what it is but don't know a ton and seems a little scary I might download something bad. So a kinda intro and how to video would be amazing.
The one thing I wish they could do with these handhelds and I'm assuming there's a good reason nobody has is having a detachable battery so you could just switch to another when it dies, just have like a tiny internal one that can keep the system on long enough to switch.
Old Thinkpad Laptops used to do exactly this. Right down to the small integrated battery to keep the power on while you swap.

Quick thought: have you had a chance to try amd’s fluid motion frames on your ally x?
More specifically, a technical preview of amd’s upcoming fluid motion frames 2 can be put onto the ally x.
For me personally, it’s been a game changer. It’s taken games like Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild and transformed them into truly magical handheld experiences.
It’s also the reason I spend more time in windows for AAA gaming since it does not work on bazzite.
I’m curious to your thoughts! Is AMD FMF and more specifically FMF 2 a game changer?

I didnt pay much to the og when first game out cus didnt seem great but keep seeing alot of people repoing this as the best all around atm. I want the X but just ordered a z1x first for pretty cheap to makes sure i like it. May juat do the x battery mod and wait for the next model.

I just dualboot using my AllyX and my SDOLED. If I want to boot into SteamOS, I turn on my SteamDeck and if I want to boot into Win11 I turn on my AllyX :) another Great vid, thanks Russ.

This product is fixed using the bottom part of the speaker grill, so there are make some scratches while installing and removing...:(
Wait, your Ally X got scratches because of the grips? Hmmm I just ordered mine, and the killswitch too. Will test out both and see which ones provide better comfort for my palms. thanks mate
@@gpgesteban9959 Yeah. There are two little teeth-like things sticking out. You will probably know what I mean when you receive the product. The scratches are only a few millimeters, but it is still a little annoying, but if I had to choose again, I think I would choose the grip over the heavy full case.

Retro Game Corp is the reason I decided to get a Ally X, because of his Bazzite tutorial. I will forever be a Steam Decker. But want the flexibility to play most games

I got the LCD deck and my mane gripe is the grips too. Its too damn heavy and the grips are too small for me to let me use it comfortably. My hands arent even that large, I just dislike using the thing due to the weight distribution. And given the device's lack of 3d horse power I ended mostly streaming to it from my beefy PC anyway, so I quickly realized I may aswell get a lighter device to stream my PC games too. The RG556 has scratched that itch so far, although the controls feel faaaarrr less premium. Trade offs everywhere!!!
What I really want to know is if the Ally X with comfort grips will fit inside the Ally X Premium Hard Case
Thanks for the video, Russ! I bought the same 4TB SSD and dual partitioned it following your guide. I just left 1TB for Windows (barely use it as its really awkward on a handheld device) and assigned 3TB to Bazzite. Also threw my old 1TB micro sd card in for emulation. Worked out very well. I got JSAUX case and although the alignment is a bit off on the top ports it works well and looks good for its price.
I will look into installing Windows button in SteamOS. That seems very convenient. Do you get Bazzite text popups when you boot the machine?
