Ford Panther 5 Speed Swap (2005+) - Part VIII

Re-releasing a freshly edited version of the 5 Speed Swap "How To" series for Manual 5 Speed Swapping a 2005-2011 Ford Crown Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Towne Car. Much applies to a Marauder too.
Part VIII of 5 Speed swapping one of the newer Drive By Wire DBW cars.
In this episode we complete a few finishing touches. Including:
- Testing Brake and reverse Lights
- First Fire
- Test all gears and speedometer
- Fix an “airbag” dash light
- Disable Automatic Shift Soelnioid on the steering column
- Perfrom wiring modification at the ECU to send the Crankshaft Position sensor output signal to the missing TSS sensor that was on the automatic but is not on the manual transmission.
In the next episode we will review how to create a 5 speed tune using SCT Advantage III software, a laptop and SCT X4 Device.

I got my 5 speed swapped. All the wiring done. I do get a check engine light and the code is for the automatic shift solenoids on the side of the automatic. It’s just a hanging connector right now. Do I have to put some inline resistors on the connecgtors?

Do you have a tune?
If you do not have a tune. The fan will run full speed. Trying to cool the transmission cooler.
I bypassed this with a resistor. FYI the resistance of the resistor inside the automatic that you unplugged at room temperature is 36 kilo-ohms.
I was unable to find a way to fix the check engine lights regarding the solenoids without a tune.
One idea I had but did not test. Was to take the electronics out of the automatic transmission. I sold mine complete. So I no longer have it.
But if you removed the resistor. And solenoids from the automatic. And plugged them back into the harness.
I’m willing to bet it would work. You would have to protect this wiring from the weather and elements somehow. And the solenoids would be clicking away hooked to nothing. Which I think should be fine.
However. Your speedometer would still read half your actual speed. This will result in you having to drive nearly 100 mph to get your emissions tests to run in order to pass testing. Unless you live in a state where they do not hook up to the OBD port.
Your options are to pay for a tune. Make your own tune. Or disassemble the manual transmission and install a 24 tooth speedometer trigger wheel. Instead of 12.
I am considering developing some sort of signal conditioner to double the output of the sensor. It can be done but would require and external microcontroller and some programming.

Don’t have a tune yet. But I did talk with Marty of Mo’s Speed shop. He said he takes cares of the automatic inputs to the ECM which should takes cares of the engine light.
I can’t get the SCT X4 here in California. So I need to have to ship it to someone in another state then ship it to me from there with the tune. To make a tune or buy one I still need the SCT.
Did you connect the resistor to stop the full speed fan on the loose connector? I still have my auto trans, may look at taking the resistors out and plug them in. Although may be easier but more expensive to just order the tune from Marty.

@@wakeupbreathing the two wires on the connector for the fan are the grey with red. And orange and black. Wire the resistor connecting those two wires together. In series. One end of resistor to grey and red. Other side of resistor to orange and black.
That will stop the fan. And make the ECU think the trans is at room temp full time.
If you go with a tune. Which I think for you is probably the easiest option. You won’t need a resistor.
The most expensive part is the X4 itself.
I made my own tune.
Note. That the temperature sensor inside the automatic that you unplugged is a Resistive Tenperature Device. As temperature changes, the resistance changes. Using a voltage divider circuit and 5 volt logic inside the ECU, the ECU interprets this varying resistance with temperature. And uses an Analog to Digital converter to correlate resistance change to temperature change.
By selecting something like a 36k 34k 32k resistor. Maybe a 1/4watt. You will lock in the temperature to roughly room temp.
But again. A tune will make this resistor not necessary.

@@bpbuilds I think you are right. Easier to go with a tune. For me the hard part is getting the X4...I could probably figure out how to do the tune also. Califirnia politicians don't think we should be able to tune our cars so no X4 here.
Mo's charges $650 for the X4 and a couple different tunes.

@@wakeupbreathing yes. And remember that even if you tuned it yourself. You’d still have to buy a X4. Which I think are about $400
And then you’d need the software license. Which I think is about $350.
So unless you’re planning on doing other modifications to the car like turbo or supercharger or crazy heads and cams and exhaust. I think that would be your best bet.
Hopefully u have a friend or family out of state you can ship to.
