- Turkey Tetrazzini sounds pretty tasty! Feeding troops in extreme cold environments has its challenges. The US Military issues a specific Ration for this purpose. The Meal Cold Weather (MCW) replaces the MRE in arctic conditions. Unlike the meal ready to eat the MCW has a freeze-dried main course. Freeze-dried food doesn't freeze in arctic temperatures because it doesn't contain any water.

We tested these back in the mid-80's at Ft. Greely during the winter. We weighed in prior to going to the field and again coming back out. All pogey bait was taken away. We ate them 3x a day for a week. At that time they were light on a main meal and heavy on items needing water like soups etc. The take-away then was most guys lost 5 pounds and they required too much hot water which wasn't easy to come by when you are the move.

I agree about the directed amount of water. Putting a full 16oz of water makes soup. I like to put 13-14oz in a meal cold weather. I haven't had too many before, but the ones I did try were very good with less water. Besides, you can always add more water if it is too dry or thick. But once you add too much water, it is too late and you are stuck with it. These are definitely the best tasting meals and the portion size is great! I'm always very full after one of these. Sometimes after a normal US MRE, I find myself looking through the trash pile to see if I missed something, because I am still a bit hungry. Not with these though. The reason why they are so good is because they don't need the kind of preservatives that a wet retort pouch needs. The food is completely devoid of water so nothing can grow or even live inside it. Same reason why honey never goes bad. Not enough water for microbes. Also, removing all the water prevents certain chemistry from occurring, so the food doesn't break down nearly as fast than when wet. Ever eat a LRRP (long range recon patrol) ration from the 1960s-1970s? They taste like they were made the day before. Very little flavor loss. Because they were also freeze dried.
Looked like a very good menu. I’ve sampled several MRE’s now and I think I want to try one of the MCW’s.

It makes sense the MCW entree swell up to massive size as in cold climates you need a LOT of carbs to keep warm, most of your energy is gonna go toward maintaining metabolic temperature.
I'm a big guy and this menu seemscto have a few more calories so that would suit me fine . And yes hot sauce belongs with every meal , i live it on pizza while my wife sits there with her nose up over it !
Tried the stroganoff one, not bad for what it was, something I wouldn't be mad about eating daily if I needed to.

Constructive criticism: terrible thumbnail(improve by only including the mre packet and a plain background) and honesty don’t this in a bad way but we don’t need to see you, we really don’t. So just keep the phone camera at the table and don’t show urself. Also include music. Hope I could help
