Honestly I forgot how much of a ladies man Casanova Sonic was in this show. I kinda liked that unique side to him though. As well as the unique costume quirk akin to Bug Bunny he had as well.
I actually loved this show, partially because how of downright stupid it was. As an adult, it just kinda comes off as, "eh, this show is low budget and is going to be shit, let's just go balls to the wall because we can" and I'm 100% for it. And the fact this show dealt with time travel, little me totally loved this movie for that alone.
Aosth was always my favorite show when I was little, mainly because of it's randomness and how out of whack everyone was. But I can definitely agree that these four episodes were infact peek aosth.
I also liked the show because it actually contained references to the games in some episodes, which is something that the other Sonic cartoons by DiC weren't able to do.
I loved the show as a kid, reminded me a lot of the Loony Tunes reruns I was also watching at the time, which I think was the show style's point. That and a bit of Ren & Stimpy which was also popular at that time. Kind of funny that this show started the robot duo trope that Orbot and Q-bot followed later on.
Same. AoStH was basically Sonic if it was Looney Tunes and that was great because it didn't take itself seriously at all and reveled in its cartoon antics. I also noticed the Orbot/Cubot connection as well to the point when I first saw them I was all "oh, they're a visually more boring Scratch and Grounder". They make up for it by having a good dynamic and humour but a floating cube and sphere isn't as interesting as a bipedal robot chicken and a treaded drilling bot, both of which take inspiration from badniks in the games.
Wait, DID they reference this Robotnik's theme in the new movies? I've only seen the first, but I was annoyed by the lack of musical references beyond Green Hill Zone. Or any cameos of living Robotniks...
On one hand, I totally get where you're coming from and found nearly all of your points made in this video to be completely valid and absolutely hilarious. But at the same time, I just love AoSTH. Yeah, it doesn't really capture the true spirit of the games, but, it has its own endearing charm. I binge-watched this show on TH-cam when I was 11 (I'm 25 now), and I enjoyed every minute of this whacky and nonsensical adventure.
Haha I think maybe it just comes from the crushing disappointment I felt when it first launched. Don't get me wrong though... I LOVE silly nonsense, I just didn't want it from Sonic. But maybe it's time I revisted the whole thing. Maybe there's enjoyment to be had if I take it for what it is and embrace the sillies! Cheers!
Yep, but the Sonic cartoon did it first. I wouldn't be too surprised if the plot of that game was inspired from it, considering the inclusion of Time Relics is an improved philosophy on Sonic's game design, and the 'Sonic's Ass Game' codename during Crash 1's development.
Absolutely loved AoStH as a child and still do even. It was the only Sonic cartoon I ever remember watching to the point I don't even know if we actually go SatAM in the UK?
SatAM starting airing completely out of the blue in 1994 during the original run of AoStH on Channel 4. One week it was AoStH, then switched to SatAM without any announcement. And it blew my mind! (I just did a video about it 😉) Glad you enjoyed AoStH. Looking through these comments, a lot of other people did too!
24:05 The thought pattern was probably inspiration from the likes of Max Fleischer, like how Sonic pulled from Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, and Bugs Bunny.
While this is not exactly the same thing, the DVD release "The Fastest Thing in Time" also has these episodes, if for some reason you want these but not a whole box set of AoStH
I remember they showed these particular four episodes quite often, and always in order. As far as storytelling goes, like you mentioned in the video itself…this was really about as coherent as it got. I always felt the ending where Robotnik goes back in time after being defeated so much was a nice ‘screw you’ to Sonic. This version of Sonic honestly annoyed me as a kid, and I found myself rooting for Robotnik most of the time.
The Nostalgia Critic actually summed things up pretty well. The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was like the idiot kid in class turning in a shoddy half assed homework project while SatAM was the smart awesome kid handing in a really well made and thought out piece of homework. That same idiot kid also did all the terrible Mario cartoons. Just imo.
As a kid I actually like AoStH more than SatAM because it was more light-hearted & funnier, plus the simplicity in the backgrounds & designs allowed my childish mind to focus more on the main characters & the story, plus it included more game references than any other DiC Sonic cartoon, as a kid who loved the slapstick comedy elements of the Looney Tunes & the Three Stooges, this series was actually fairly entertaining to me, but since a lot has changed since the earliest Sonic Games, I still find enjoyable for nostalgia sake, but I would only recommend this show to like a toddler or something since they might find the bright colors, simple designs, and slapstick comedy to be eye-catching & silly enough to enjoy it, but if you're an adult I would more over suggest SatAM for the drama & more serious tone, any ways I'm glad you pointed out that This was the actual first attempt at a Sonic Movie, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback. I was on the fence whether to keep it in or bleep it out when editing - I think I'll likely censor it in the future. At least with the Sonic videos. Cheers!
@@ExpressoTheCat That's fair. Glad you like it. Maybe I need to give the full thing another go and look at it for what it is. I think for me it's because it was the ONLY Sonic series at the time and I was really excited for it then it was like... what is THIS?! It was so disappointing to me back in the day. Maybe if it was like it is now, where we have loads of different interpretations of Sonic, I would have been more forgiving and accepting of this bonkers interpretation as a side thing from the main series.
A few things. Sonic couldn't do his buzz saw attack while his shoes were stoned, you didn't question why Tails became invincible without becoming king for that one moment (How Robotnik was able to do it was probably through the shared powers of the emeralds), Grounder did not dress as a girl when Scratch did to lure Masonic away, that was the style of clothing men wore in Egypt (or Mobigypt I assume in this case) and was supposed to be the disguised Scratch's brother who got upset over Masonic ignoring his false advances and you didn't question why Robotnik had those tiny glasses in that one scene where the lava monsters grabbed Sonic and Tails. Also, when Tempo Video/Abbey Home Media released this tape in the 90's, they included a bonus episode which you didn't mention. A good effort though with most of the other things mentioned being mentioned. Other people have all ready mentioned that TMS produced these episodes and that they themselves are now owned by Sega ironically enough. However, the Futurama movies WERE movies first, they were edited into TV episodes later.
I had no idea this was the actual first movie, I had this as a kid on dvd, I remember bring it to school and watching this with my class back in elementary, I only remember the beach scene
If this counts as a movie, then I guess the TMNT video release of "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles" on VHS should count as well, since it contains all four episodes that involve the Ninja Turtles and Shredder trying to collect pieces of an alien crystal.
I still love this cartoon. Quite obviously not targeted at young children. The camp / silly comedy is clearly catered towards an older audience. I thought it was great back then and I love it even more now I’m older. Best cartoon version of Sonic, hands down.
I think I should maybe revisit the whole thing and just let the sillies wash over me. Think of it like a Sonic Ren and Stimpy rather than a game adaptation. Glad you enjoy it! Cheers
@@HillTopTerebi I think because this was the first Sonic media I consumed outside of the Master System Games and Mega Drive Games that this is and always will be the way I ‘hear’ Sonic in my head. That includes Robotnik and Tails!
If a movie like this had been done today for the series, like for Sonic Boom when that show was still running, I'd think it would have worked a lot better without being a string of episodes with a repeated structure. This movie does it wrong, since it always ends the same as they are each individual episodes and it has the same set up at the beginning each time. Not to mention, the casual wackiness and lack of logic that is this series. If this had to be redone, I would do it similar to Avengers: Infinity War, especially since this film's plot is similar to that by sheer coincidence. Now with a much larger cast of heroes and villains (arguably), Robotnik/Eggman would be searching for the seven Chaos Emeralds throughout different zones or time. It depends on what version of the series this is taking place in. Regardless if they each have individual powers, gathering the seven of them would give Robotnik his own super form with similar, if not greater power than the super forms of the heroes. So, Sonic and friends must travel after Robotnik to get them before Robotnik can, except they fail and Robotnik powers up. How Robotnik would be beaten by this, I would expect it being Robotnik's chaos powers wearing off, but I'm not sure. This could work as a concept.
Fair comment - you're not wrong! They packaged it as a 103 minute feature and sold it to me as one long special so I'm gonna class it as a "movie" though - sort of 😉 Cheers!
10:38 Maybe Sonic can't curl up because he has the stone boots? I'm guessing Sonic's ancestor is asleep to prevent Robotnik's ancestor from escaping the tomb, like a guardian of sorts. If that's the case, that's some very deep lore for something like AoSTH. 21:04 Background clipped there lol A lot of these may be callbacks to previous episodes, I vaguely remember seeing one where Sonic saved a town of Sausage people.
As i kid I remember thinking robotnick was a better villain here than in Sonic Satam, becuase i tought that in Satam Robotnick does nothing being ruler.

People who don't like AOSTH are joyless shmucks, who have never truly smiled once in their entire lives and probably hate the very concept of love. That show is a god damn treasure. The fact that it exists brings happiness to all of existence. It also helps that Long John Baldry is still the best Robotnik of all time.

Wait, DID they reference this Robotnik's theme in the new movies? I've only seen the first, but I was annoyed by the lack of musical references beyond Green Hill Zone. Or any cameos of living Robotniks...
You mean "The Hall of Mountain King"?
And no, Robotnik's theme in the movie is much better
@@almas4663 No, AoStH Robotnik's theme is different. Mountain King happens in the show theme.
Damn I can’t believe this movie predicted the plot of Sonic and the Black Knight
Is no one going to recall that this is literally infinity war and endgame combined?
It's more Back to the Future.
Confirmed, Sonic Ova, Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic Labyrinth were 100% inspired by this movie completely. Totally
This movie did Sonic and the Black Knight years before it even came out.
Cheers!
They predicted the storybook series
And rifled on back to the future
isn't the general idea of "going back in time to get jewelery before the bad guys do" also the plot of Crash 3?
(I just did a video about it 😉)
Glad you enjoyed AoStH. Looking through these comments, a lot of other people did too!
I just realized...didn't earlier only the emerald work for a..."king" so HOW did tails activate it!?
He clearly has royal blood in his veins.
King of Cum
It was presumably a lie by the king.
Some theorize that Tails might be a descendant of King Arthur. Foxes are canines.
24:05 The thought pattern was probably inspiration from the likes of Max Fleischer, like how Sonic pulled from Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, and Bugs Bunny.
Cant wait for people to find the REAL real first Sonic movie lol
I never liked how Tails looked in this show, but in those shots from the medieval episode he does actually look cute.
10:43 how can sonic cut through them though when his feet are stuck in the item that's meant to help him that got turned into stone
Haha you are right. I am a dope. I should have had a coffee before recording this!
I think Sonic could try rubbing his spines against the bars to try cutting them. It would be pretty funny to look at.
I think the reason sonic didn't just get out the dungeon with his spikes is because the stone boots were so heavy he couldn't spindash
The animation in this looks surprisingly good, compared to some of the other episodes I've seen
Because it was guest-animated by TMS.
Ah, makes sense
While this is not exactly the same thing, the DVD release "The Fastest Thing in Time" also has these episodes, if for some reason you want these but not a whole box set of AoStH
I remember they showed these particular four episodes quite often, and always in order. As far as storytelling goes, like you mentioned in the video itself…this was really about as coherent as it got. I always felt the ending where Robotnik goes back in time after being defeated so much was a nice ‘screw you’ to Sonic. This version of Sonic honestly annoyed me as a kid, and I found myself rooting for Robotnik most of the time.
Oh Adventures, you still have the best Robotnik.
Just imo.
Hahaha that's a really funny way of summing the two shows up!
"If a friend of mine turned into a big piece of cheese . . ."
That is . . . not the strangest hypothetical that anyone has ever proposed to me..
Holy nostalgia, I remember my dad buying me this when I was young and I would watch it twice a day for weeks. Amazing.
The classic “U” rating.
«And there will be nothing unsuitable for children». Even Robotnik’s fat ass on the screen during every scene about him?
This whole cartoon is written, animated and marketed for and by fetus's
(also I didn't think the swearing was necessary)
5:23 it irritates me so much how grounder isn't using his drills to dig.
Hahaha good point!!
Aww, they glossed over the most important plot point. Did Sonic ever hook up with any of those bunny babes from the beach!?
Is it me or it's really kinda avengers endgame plot
Pretty much! 😁
Now I can hear Robotinik saying: "I'm inevitable!"
These specials are impressive. I like that the animal and human characters coexist. These episodes are also hilarious what a wild show😂
This was my introduction to Adventures of Sonic, and I freaking love the entire series.
Also, his name is PROFESSOR Caninestein, thank you very much.
Apologies! 😁 He is a Professor indeed!
No its Professor *Cockblock*
I love AoStH, it's a really fun show
So you are telling me, AoSth made a story of King Arthur with Sonic in it befor Sonic and the Black Knight was a thing
To be honest, if you were a wacky 80s-90s cartoon, at some point there's gonna be some king arthur sort of episode when you ran out of ideas.
However, the Futurama movies WERE movies first, they were edited into TV episodes later.
what was the bonus episode
@@Alizamk1 Trail of the Missing Tails
@@David315842 oh ok
@@Alizamk1 Tempo/Abbey Home Media I guess felt like they really wanted people to feel like they got their money's worth with this release.
I had no idea this was the actual first movie, I had this as a kid on dvd, I remember bring it to school and watching this with my class back in elementary, I only remember the beach scene
Adventures of sonic the hedgehog is the best show ever and I love lol!
I would highly recommend this show to everyone.
If this counts as a movie, then I guess the TMNT video release of "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles" on VHS should count as well, since it contains all four episodes that involve the Ninja Turtles and Shredder trying to collect pieces of an alien crystal.
4:04 *Blinks* Was that Sonic’s werehog look from Unleashed? Is this where that idea first germinated?
I never knew those episodes were a film.
I'm not sure if it was everywhere, or maybe it was just a UK thing?
Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog is also best known for the Sonic Sez segments at the end of every episode and the Pingas meme.
These days I think you're right!
There was also the Robot Ninja episode, that was a pretty decent episode for a series such as this.
Wait I had no idea this existed I was always wonder when I was a kid why the cartoons never used the chaos emeralds
@@SmokeTheHorsehog oh im so sorry, i thought most people already watched it, i'll delete the comment to not spoil anyone
Or maybe... just maybe... AoStH wasnt meant to have any story. It was just supposed to be a funny cartoon show akin to Looney Tunes.
@@DiSCERiTY Pretty sure that was what it was supposed to be, until they decided to get ambitious and make a four part story arc.
but at that point its not even its own thing, its just an endgame ripoff
6:10 I think sonic set a smokebomb and then put all that stuff on him at super speed
Oooooh that is a VERY good theory! Good thinking! You may be right!
Sonic in The Multiverse of Madness
Where Sonic finds Sanic and Knuckles finds da wey.
26:50 yeah I won't force them to watch that with me bht I'll force them to watch one of the live action movies with me.
Not much forcing for the live action ones I'm sure - they're awesome! (Especially 2 IMO) 😀
I wouldn’t call the Quest for the Chaos Emeralds arc a movie. It’s a bunch of separate episodes.
Fair comment - you're not wrong! They packaged it as a 103 minute feature and sold it to me as one long special so I'm gonna class it as a "movie" though - sort of 😉
Cheers!
@@HillTopTerebi Additionally, the Futurama movies weren't multi-part episodes, first. They were direct-to-video movies that were split up for TV.
^ THIS. This man speaks the truth.
This was just a 4 Part Saga.
You might Say Christmas Blast was the Movie or a Special
10:38 Maybe Sonic can't curl up because he has the stone boots?
I'm guessing Sonic's ancestor is asleep to prevent Robotnik's ancestor from escaping the tomb, like a guardian of sorts. If that's the case, that's some very deep lore for something like AoSTH.
21:04 Background clipped there lol
A lot of these may be callbacks to previous episodes, I vaguely remember seeing one where Sonic saved a town of Sausage people.
For a moment I thought this was forgotten, this is cool.
....this is the same damn plot as Avengers End Game
16:41 you’re a king in all of our hearts.
11:08 I did not expect you to say that I thought you were going to say what a pingus
This was the first adventure of sonic the hedgehog episodes I saw .
Really enjoyed this video, it was really funny. Your dry delivery helps sell your jokes better.
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I'm new to this so still figuring it all out... Thanks!
As i kid I remember thinking robotnick was a better villain here than in Sonic Satam, becuase i tought that in Satam Robotnick does nothing being ruler.
True! He definitely takes a more 'hands on' approach in this series. Good point! Cheers!
...To tell ya the truth, the Sonic OVA has some badass music; to a band we will never discover who performed the pieces as Japan was an ass when it came to credit s... May their politeness die in flames for this INJUSTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's funny how almost in every piece of media, Sonic have to deal with some Time Travel sheananigans. Let's take some exaples:
-Sonic CD
-This movie
-Sonic 06
-Sonic Generations
-Maybe Sonic Mania(with the CD levels)
It would be even crazier if in the future we'll get a Sonic movie 4 inspired by Sonic 06 with Silver and the time travel stuff(don't ask why this thing came in my mind).
21:43 Unintentional Sonic CD pose reference here.
This was actually my first exposure to the sonic franchise specifically this kind of movie
I actually watched it through the DVD release called the fastest thing in time
Well, this is very interesting. Never knew this...
"surely sonics spikes would be more efficient for cutting their way out of the cell"
his shoes are stone 💀
i like to consider these episodes the shows ending
Sonic sayz "if someone trys to touch you in a way you're not comfortable with... That good!"
Thank you so much, I thought I lost my mind for years cause I could've sworn the chaos emeralds were in this show but when looking at episode lists and everything and Netflix even I couldn't find it, I thought it was something I made up in a dream or something, but now I know it's real and what to search for specifically, thank you so much. Now I feel a little bit less insane
Listening to a grow ass man analyze and try to make sense of a kids' cartoon is definitely an experience
10:38 sonic needs to do a roll in order to do slice things
You are right. I was a dope there. I think I need coffee before I record these in future!
Do you feel the second Sonic movie got the idea of letting Robotnik take control of Emerald power from this one?
Nah, that's a trope of the series and action adventure stories in general. Gotta let the bad guy get the power mcguffin so he can get a super form the hero can overcome in the final battle.
Gotta love Sonic's new radioactive Time Shoes. Just strapping some radiation boots to his feet.
Yes, please do more longer videos like this.
Honestly I wasn’t a fan of this show and I watched sadam before this thinking “what is this?!”but I respect this show for its contribution to meme culture.
Instead of super sonic they got super robotnik
Those time travel shoes do be kinda drippy tho.
14:53 - Oh God the Sly 4 Flashbacks!!!
Saw the last few episodes of the so called movie eee damn only the Egyptian theme episode was least fairly okays but the sheer randomness of the cartoon has not aged well it just seems to be written by drunken or clownish production lol
Crazy isn't it? I bet the writing staff had a great time making it though. It honestly seems like the rules were "Just do anything. It doesn't have to make sense. Go nuts!"
@@HillTopTerebi yush but even “go nuts”🌰 even needs to be in some chaotic order xd
