I just realized something about the Chaos Emeralds in AOSTH. There were 4 known Chaos Emeralds, a secret 5th Emerald and a possible 6th Emerald seen on Sonic's ancestor. This further connects the concept of Sonic 1 having only Six Chaos Emeralds My guess on the 5th Emerald is that it can Create and destroy Landscapes And for the Possible 6th Emerald it could give you an energy Shield that gives an immunity to the other Emeralds powers
I heard the secret 5th emerald is Chaos Emerald Ring, it's an Emerald that sticks on the ring that grants any choice, Robotnik use it to alter landscape in "Fast and Easy" The emerald is actually the most strongest
The 5h emerald reminds me of the Master Emerald. Instead of making chunks of landmass float, it sinks them into the ocean. It the "extra in the set" (of 4 instead of 7). It's meant to be place on a secret altar (a la Hidden Palace Zone). However, Sonic 3 (let alone Sonic & Knuckles) wouldn't be relesed until a year later after the episode's first airing, so this is all just a nice little coincidence. ^_^
I swear, there was a reference to Starlight Zone from Sonic 1 in the space episode. I do not remember the name or episode number, but I know the zone was mentioned.
Thank you! You're right! It was even in my notes but forgot to add it to the final script! 😅 I am a dope. Starlight Zone IS in it. (Although from what I recall it's just a bit of space somewhere. I didn't rewatch the episode.) Cheers!
In the episode "High-Stakes Sonic" the casino in that episode is referred to as Robotnik's Casino Night Zone Anyway great video, I don't see much AOSTH appreciation outside of YTPs on youtube
Thank you for the heads up! I *knew* I'd miss some 😅 I guess at least the zone got a mention because of the Mobius 5000's "Casino Zone" but its a shame I missed that. Cheers again, and thank you for watching!
Yeah they really didn't go over the top with game references at all, thankfully. It's like they made a creative funny cartoon show first, and then put in references to the games here and there.
You know it feels like some idea for Sandopolis was taking from the Pyramid episode, mostly the idea of pushing blocks to get pass obstacles and spike crushers. Though it could also be completely coincidently.
@@HillTopTerebi There were episodes of AoStH (including the unaired Pilot) where Robotnik is riding a Drill Mobile of sorts. It feels like a weird hybrid between the Drill Pods from Sonic 2 and 3; the latter being the version that lacked wheels. What's even crazier is that in "So Long, Sucker", there was a literal Eggmobile, but lacks the drill and color scheme of the Sonic 2 Drill Car.
5:02 I'm pretty sure at that point they are in a different location entirely and plus the background at the convention scene looks more like Emerald Hill
I'm guessing what happened with the episode "Untouchable Sonic" is that the writer intended for it to be Roller and Ball Hog from the games, just dressed as gangsters for the shake of the Untouchables parody, but the storyboard artists didn't know they were from the games, and so designed the characters' model sheets based only on how they were describe in the script. Maybe the stript mentioned how they look but not their spieces, assuming everyone would already know what they are meant to be, which would explain why Roller looks so different and yet still retains his horns in substitution for the ears real armadillos had, and maybe the script said something like "He then transformed into a ball" and if you were a character deisgner who didn't know what he was meant to be, you might assume it's some sorta magic looking kinda thing, and maybe if you're looking a visual gag to toss in there, you draw it as a bowling ball. Meanwhile Ballhog was probably stated to be short and fat, with big eyes and a scrawny tail, if you assumed the "hog" in his name refered to only his weight, and wasn't literal, you might end up with something like that. Yea, I'm sure it was something along those lines, some misunderstanding between the different people working on the show trying to make the deadline.
5:01 If you look up the scenery and the background right there, it's basically Sonic and Robotnik with the wrecking ball in Hill Top Zone. Also that Green Hill background you mentioned in unaired pilot looks more like one from Emerald Hill Zone to me.
Nice video! Despite the creative liberties going on, there were quite a few game references (although the Mario cartoons take that crown). I can recall a few more references that weren't covered. The end of the intro, Sonic, and Tails pose together in a circle similar to Sonic 2's title screen. The Jump sfx and the Collected Ring sfx can be heard in one part in "Grounder the Genius" coming from the character Hacker's computer halfway in the beginning of the episode. A badnik couple who I thought were based on the "Buzz Bomber" badnik, show up after disguising themselves as Tails' Parents in "Tails New Home". They are later tied by their fake Tails by Sonic and after a bit of trying to break free...combine to turn into a random "Antran" Apple Sauce can. There...are no badniks named Antran however. So despite their badnik design (at least as far as this show goes), they might be original creations! O.o;
Cheers for the awesome comment. I need to go back and rewatch these episodes because I had completely forgotten about this stuff! Seems like there are quite a few things I missed. Thanks again!
The jump sound too! I'd remembered the ring SFX from Hacker's computer but not that. Now I can go take that out of my own comment. And what is up with that apple sauce can?? So damn random lol
@@HillTopTerebi I’d argue that some of the creative liberties in AoStH ended up being referenced in future Sonic games, for better or worse. Here are some examples. 1. The “Egg-0-Matic Tunnelizer and Town Terrorizer", which can be seen in a few episodes, looks like it was used as a basis for the Egg-Drill Pod from Sonic 3, as both have a singular drill; however, Sonic 3’s Egg-Drill Pod can change the positions of the drill from front to back. 2. the first In-Game Sonic cast (in Sonic Adventure 1) has Sonic, Tails and Eggman share a similar cadence to AoStH’s casting. 3. In the same game (Adventure 1), there’s a Badnik called Kiki, which bares a resemblance to Sonic 2’s Coconuts (or Aiai in Japan); However, Kiki has monkey-like ears that are more similar to the AoStH Coconuts. 4. Sonic Rush Adventure features a Robot by the name of Captain Whisker. He’s meant to be a Pirate Robot version of Eggman, but he resembles more to Blackbot, despite Blackbot losing facial hair in the midst of Roboticization. 5. Sonic fights a Black Knight in the titular game. However, Sonic and the Black Knight felt like a bad version of “Hedgehog of the Hound Table”; because while Sonic is dubbed the “True” King Arthur in the game, AoStH Sonic has a more fitting role: “The Holy Hedgehog”; which is more appropriate for Sonic, because Sonic as a character worked better as an opposing force against an abuse in power, rather than being in control and abusing said power. 6. While not part of the mainline of games, Sonic Boom has a design of Eggman that is reminiscent of Robotnik’s Wartime outfit from Lovesick Sonic, complete with a change in girth. 7. Of all the games to make an explicit reference, the infamously bad Sonic Forces actually took a scene directly from "Lovesick Sonic"; Sonic runs across a giant snake, who then eats him, only to be spat out because of what Sonic did to the snake's mouth.
there are some unintentional sonic references in this show. like some areas that resemble lava reef and ice cap from sonic 3. there's one episode where they go into a temple that vaguely resembles hidden palace zone the unused one from sonic 2. there's an episode where they go to a abandoned space station that vaguely resembles the one from sonic adventure 2. there another episode where scratch and grounder are driving a plain threw desert like a part of a level from sonic mania. there's also and episode where sonic runs into a giant snake that eats him and then spits him out like a scene in sonic forces.
First, I hope Wildbrain would not dmca this but I like all of the references of all game material on the DiC Sonic Cartoons, and I hope you make a sequel to that
Ironically you missed the Hill Top zone reference. Don't remember exactly the episode where it was mentioned, but I think it was "Slow Going", the one with the sloth chatacters.
A few notes: * In the Tom Payne Archive (one of Sega Of America's graphical backups), there's a collection of Sonic 1 badniks using the game's default palette. Chopper appears yellow in these graphics. * Ball Hog's coloration in the show is closer to that of their appearance in Sonic 2 8-Bit. * The 5th Emerald and its island sinking powers likely refer to the Master Emerald and how it holds up Angel Island. * Spinball itself mixes in characters from AoStH (Scratch, Pink Sally from Christmas Blast), SATAM (The other Freedom Fighters, that monkey I think), and the games proper (Crawl, Clucker)
Don’t forget Dr. Robotnik’s pet chicken robot named Cluck from season 1 from Satam! Where in Spinball, Just like how Scratch is portrayed in the game’s bonus levels, Cluck is also a mass produced Badnik that appears in almost every level in the game.
The 1st episode had badniks from Robotnik's mean bean machine. That space station episode had Starlight zone & it could probably give death egg vibes. One of Sonics birthday episodes they were at Sky City & he was battling Buttnik in the sky. That Pseudo Sonic was like Metal or Mecha Sonic.
Robotniks character design from Sonic Spinball also looks like the design for him in the TV show when you see him and Sonic falling down together after defeating him
@@HillTopTerebi Classic Sonic and Adventure 1&2 are my prime go-to games; there may be a few good ones after the Death of the Dreamcast, but I feel the bad outweighed the good in Modern’s case, especially with Frontiers now taking Sonic to the Seinen direction, which alienates me, a Sonic fan that loves the Shonen direction that started with the first game.
In one episode of the show, Scratch jokingly said time to time to pay as visit to “Dr. Badwrench” which is in reference to one of the concept art information for Sonic 1, where it is one of Dr. Ivo Eggman Robotnik’s original names that were scrapped at the time.
For the record, in the Sonic Bible the Special Stages for the first game are referred to as "Warps of Confusion" created by the "Containment Rings" that hold the Chaos Emeralds. This was dropped as with many other elements of the bible, but some early Sonic books and this show still use that name.
In the episode "Spaceman Sonic" we see the show's interpretation of Star Light Zone. Also, it's a long shot, but I think the Scrap Valley from episode "Sonic Gets Thrashed" might be a reference to Scrap Brain Zone. And what about Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine?
Robotnik: "Is my new Casino Night Zone ready?" "The racers then head to Sonic 2's Casino Night Zone, referred to as the Casino Zone. Which is located next to Chemical Plant, finally we'll transition to the special zone." Robotnik: "NOOOO!?! I SPENT A BILLION MOBIUMS!! I MADE IT A TOP PRIORITY!! YOU MISERABLE MESS OF MICROCHIPS!!"
Thank you very much. Yep I have more 'game references' videos on other Sonic animations coming up. They take a bit of time to make because I end up rewatching loooaads of episodes but they will all be covered 😁 Cheers!
ngl it’s pretty surprising how many (distorted) game elements are featured in this cartoon heck, if you even discount the characterizations, sonic’s is pretty similar to his game self (a wayward adventurer who goes where he pleases)
6:42- Believe it or not, that would be the second time “Casino Zone” would’ve appeared in the show. It also appeared in the 5th Episode, High Stakes Sonic.
Sonic 2's Special Stage is referenced in AoSTH's opening sequence. Or, maybe it's just a generic half pipe that Sonic runs through. But I doubt it's a coincidence. Also! The very second phrase in the opening theme song, listen to the bass line - it should sound VERY familiar to Sonic 2 fans 😉
Agreed on the intro - definitely a nod to the half pipe I reckon. Also... 😮!!! I have never noticed that in the intro music!! 😮!!! Thank you for your comment!
The TV show Scratch and Grounder are watching in "Untouchable Sonic" is also a clip from the Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog Pilot Episode. Edit: I made this before you said it was from the pilot in actually video sorry about that.
You missed one in terms of zones. The episode "High Stakes Sonic" was about Robotnik's Casino Night Zone which he mentions by name. I think the Casinoville title was used in "The Mobius 5000" for this reason.
You forgot the concept of Robotnik turning people/animals in to robots which he does in _Blackbot the Pirate._ There’s also _Sonic Christmas Blast_ which Sonic do extreme sports like in some of the Game Gear games and was supposed to tie in to some of them as evinced by the title.
As much as I love both of those shows, I'm glad there wasn't more game references in this - the Mario Bros Super Show shoved them in at every corner and it was just excessive.
Actually in an earlier episode robotnik builds a new zone and calls it casino night zone and has rigs the machines and takes a bunch of sheep to build a robotnik monument and sonic has to un-rig the machines and save everyone
She just puts lyrics to the show's theme song. The theme song is in turn based on the title theme from the first two games, and the invincibility music in those games was also based on that title theme.
Actually, unlike Grounder and Coconuts, Scratch has no direct Badnik basis found in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, although Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia states he is loosely based off Clucker, a Badnik in the Wing Fortress Zone. The show's bible and a few episodes of the show depict Scratch manning a turret with egg bomb projectiles, similar to Clucker
They should have aired the unaired pilot tbh and then made the first aired episode the second episode or something. Maybe explaining g how they got there. The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is an amazing show, but the backdrops look like abstract art pieces, not in a good way.
@sk Yeah I see what you mean. But I like their idea with the original making it more closer to the original game with the back drop while making it the way it already serves with its cartoony- ness. Seeing Sonic run through Greenhill zone and seeing the original badniks is a pretty nice sight. Whether they decided to continue it with their original pilot idea or just served it as an introduction to where he enters the Mobius we see throughout the show would be fine. And it is fine the way it is but it’d be pretty cool still if they aired it.
I have one criticism. You showing your animated character picture doing the same pose and facial expression makes this video look cheap. If it weren't for the Dreamcast controller, I would've thought it was a clipart character. No offense.
None taken. It's a fair point. I'm constantly thinking whether I should set up a small studio and appear on camera at some point instead of using the avatar. We'll see what happens! Cheers!
No offense, but can you please keep your sona out of the video? It really annoys me when people shoehorn their cartoon selves into most of the video. I want to watch the *VIDEO,* not stare at their sona taking up a big chunk of the screen. Having them at like the start and ending of the video is okay as those segments don't usually contain elements of the video's topic. I know you mean well, but that TH-camr trope just *really* gets on my nerves.

6:42- Believe it or not, that would be the second time “Casino Zone” would’ve appeared in the show. It also appeared in the 5th Episode, High Stakes Sonic.
Fun fact: I forgot the name of the episode. But Robotnik made casino night zone as a way of making more people to build his sphinx for "Robotnik day."
I remembered the name! It's "High Stakes Sonic."
8:08 so superstars emerald powers are from here huh
You forgot the episode robotnik jr there was a character called Robotnik jr and I think that is a reference to the metropolis act 3 boss
8:13 I guess this is the start of the idea of Robotnik becoming buff when using the Chaos Emeralds (in fan content)
You missed one in terms of zones. The episode "High Stakes Sonic" was about Robotnik's Casino Night Zone which he mentions by name. I think the Casinoville title was used in "The Mobius 5000" for this reason.
I wonder if in Episode 55 if Sonic & friends took the shortcut through the Special Stage, they'd gotten a chaos emerald?
They should have kept going to the end! 😁
@@HillTopTerebi Now everything ticks together. They probably dropped out early in order to win the race.
5:02 that's in Hill Top notice the background
Well, this is quite good for a 1993 SatAM cartoon... Even I enjoyed quite a lot.
AoStH is a syndicated show, made to have 65 episodes shown on weekdays.
I always thought Grounder had similarity to that badnik
1:23 Not to mention those who've played the first Sonic games before
That green hill zone looking area
Could be emerald hill as well
Shame the show wasn't more like the unaired pilot. That looks great!
This is why I like AoStH better.
As much as I prefer this show over Sonic SatAM, it could've done a lot better with references to the games.
8:33 something tells me this is an adaptation of Sonic and Tails Chaos (what call Sonic Chaos/Sonic and Tails as that games has two different names)
I didn’t recognize a lot of these references because of the different coloring.
If this is mentioned before, sorry for that - but that songstress (Cattie, I think) sings and uses Invincibility music.
She just puts lyrics to the show's theme song. The theme song is in turn based on the title theme from the first two games, and the invincibility music in those games was also based on that title theme.
i want to see you do the same thing with satam
4:52 I think that’s emerald hill zone
Dr. Robotnik is actually “Dr. Eggman”!
i would say that green hill is more like emerald hill
Yep, looking at it again I think you're right. Cheers!
I swear there's an episode where Tails actually refers to Robotnik as Eggman
Oooo I'll have a look into that. Cheers! Doesn't ring a bell off the top of my head but very possible!
"Lifestyles of the Sick and Twisted"! I have a VHS recording of that episode!
0:48 more like spinball drew from both Aosth and it's more serious sequel? show
Ah quite possibly, yes! Good way of looking at it. There were elements of both in Spinball.
Scratch was from Sonic Spinball
Actually, unlike Grounder and Coconuts, Scratch has no direct Badnik basis found in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, although Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia states he is loosely based off Clucker, a Badnik in the Wing Fortress Zone. The show's bible and a few episodes of the show depict Scratch manning a turret with egg bomb projectiles, similar to Clucker
this is just taken from the wiki
@@Alizamk1 what's wrong with that
You forgot pseudo Sonic
Did You Owned "Sonic Origins" By Buying it on The Store or You Get a Physical Copy?!
I bought in on the Xbox store digitally. No physical release yet, but I hope they do one some day like they did with Sonic Mania plus 😀
Swatbots
Bruh its Not green hill Its EMERALD HILL
I have one criticism. You showing your animated character picture doing the same pose and facial expression makes this video look cheap. If it weren't for the Dreamcast controller, I would've thought it was a clipart character. No offense.
None taken. It's a fair point. I'm constantly thinking whether I should set up a small studio and appear on camera at some point instead of using the avatar. We'll see what happens! Cheers!
Asth
No offense, but can you please keep your sona out of the video? It really annoys me when people shoehorn their cartoon selves into most of the video. I want to watch the *VIDEO,* not stare at their sona taking up a big chunk of the screen. Having them at like the start and ending of the video is okay as those segments don't usually contain elements of the video's topic. I know you mean well, but that TH-camr trope just *really* gets on my nerves.
