Hello and welcome to Hill Top Terebi. In this video, we'll be taking a look back at DIC's third attempt at making a Sonic The Hedgehog TV series, with 1999's 'Sonic Underground'.
This show flew completely under my radar at the time. Not because I'd lost interest in Sonic, but instead because I was focused on the brand new release at the time 'Sonic Adventure', which I'd picked up, along with an imported Japanese Dreamcast, some months earlier.
Apart from one brief encounter with the show on GMTV's Diggit (on the UK's ITV channel), Sonic Underground completely passed me by.
So now, in September 2022, 23 years after it originally aired, I finally feel it's time to revisit Queen Aleena and the gang. It's time to revisit... SONIC UNDERGROUND!

Sonic at his worst in the Classic Era? Definitely. Sonic at his worst in general? Not entirely.
I actually like sonic underground
I think it’s one of the top series. It may have to do with the fact it’s made as a sort of softer SatAM what with it sharing some writers as well as the general premise. Does it have its failings? Yes. I’m not about to say it’s perfect. It also benefits from the fact it has more latitude for storytelling since the characters aren’t stuck between forest and dangerous city you can’t risk being seen in or the occasional trek into some never seen again unknown. There’s also the fact it has one focused goal: find the Queen and then liberate the planet whereas all the other series are silly things daily or repetitive fetch quests with annoying side characters. So _Sonic Underground_ and SatAM get my top 2 spots.

Thought it was ok as a kid, find it sorta meh now, not awful but not my favourite, though the songs are awful
Tails completes his character arc in this show in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog he was the secondary main character. In Sonic satam he was a side character. In underground he doesn't exist. truly a character arc of all time
😂😂😂 What an arc! I did mention Tails' absence in my original draft of the script for this video but ended up cutting it because it was running too long. Tbh, it's weird he's not there (because Sonia and Manic take his place) but it's the least of the show's problems I guess haha!
If tails was in this show I hope that this voice actor/actress would be better but this show I watched in my childhood. Oh no this animation is way worser than the previous 2 sonic shows from the 90's, the way they animate is very bad 2d animation along with bad cgi shows/movies its like it goes along with disney princess enchanted adventures and other movies and shows that have very bad animation. That show to me right now is obnoxious and a disgrace.

I seriously cannot believe this show came out in 1999; because it looks like it was released in 1988.
Keytars; hair metal and mutants. Nothing about this screams late 90s animation. I mean for fucks sake; Pokémon was on it's 2nd season at this point and Cartoon Network was killing it with shows like Dexter's Lab and The Powerpuff Girls. Invader Zim came out less than 2 years later. Comparing the art styles of these shows is like night and day.
I can only think that somehow these channel owned the rights to these Sonic designs and had to quickly make a show in hopes that Sonic Adventure was successful. But obviously the art style of SA couldn't be more different than the early 90's DIC art style they were obviously trying to emulate.
The funniest thing to me is that Crash Bandicoot was originally going to be released on the PS1 with a DIC style opening animation and the staff found is so embarrassingly 'cringe' that they scrapped it.
There isn't any more evidence that DIC style was no longer fashionable than that.

I can’t say I blame you for that conclusion, as someone who grew up on Sonic Underground on dvd and has a lot of nostalgic love for it

This show is a joke between me and my friends and a personal guilty pleasure.
Underground's intro was what made me not watch the show when i was a kid, i did not liked it and that there were babies, i don't like crying babies.

This show biggest problem is the tone, and direction. It is trying to hard to be serious, yet it also is trying to hard to be funny.
This wouldn't be a problem but the writers of this show clearly did not know how to do that.
AOSTH knows what it is. It's meant to be fucking insane. SatAm knows it's a serious show.
Underground just suffers from not knowing what it is, and the animation and songs does not help at all.
It's easily the worst Sonic cartoon we have gotten.

Very good point. Spot on. It has no idea whether it's supposed to be ridiculous and cartoonish or dark and serious. I bet there was some arguments going on behind the scenes at the time, and compromises were made that made it fail in both directions.

There is a fan made Sonic Underground Comic that actually has an ending!
Archie Sonic Universe Online issue 50 (not to be confused with official Sonic Universe 50 that has Metal Sonic) is as close as you are ever going to get to an ending to Sonic Underground. It’s actually pretty good!

I still wished that they haven't left Sonic Undergrond as a cliffhanger at the end of that series because we never got to see Sonic, Sonia and Manic reunited with their mother Queen Aleena as well as the prophecy fulfilled of defeating Robotnik once and for all.
You'll notice how the animation is a lot smoother during the opening credits, and awful during the actual show. This is because most of the effort was put into the opening to grab your attention and they hope you won't notice the quality dip cuz, ya' know, your here for sanic! I remember watching the episode where sonic returns to the floating island to find knuckles, and sonic, manic and Sonia start singing "no one is an island"...ughughugh...I shudder thinking about it! During songs sonic always sounded like a hippie going threw puberty.
😂 Haha yeah the drop off in animation from intro to the actual episode is crazy! The "Sonics" look like they have their noses on sideways too looking at it now. Like, instead of sticking out at the from the are flat and wide. Weird show. I share in yours shuddering at the songs. Just awful...

what's really weird about this show is that this shows main reason for existing is to promote Sonic Adventure... I sure did love when manic pulled up on Chaos and said it's maning time and maning all over it.
A small bit of trivia. Sonic's singing voice,is provided by SamVincent. Aka... "Double D“ from "Ed,Edd n' Eddy".

9:40, so had to consult the Sonic wiki for this one, it is never explained WHY he can transform, but it IS explained that his ability to transform is what allowed him to "go super" in the Quest for the Chaos 3 parter so I guess its Chaos energy?

Michael Edens the story editor of this show and an occasional writer has an impressive writing career even before the show like 1993's Exosquad which he was head writer and season to showrunner, Beetlejuice animated series, and X-Men the animated series what you wrote a letter episode four. Unfortunately, he passed away from cancer in 2021 regretting not finishing Exosquad.
I think one of the worst aspects of Sonic Underground outside of bad animation and clearly reusing assets from Sonic satam really bad songs has got to the inconsistent tone going back and forth between satam and aosth
I was wondering watching it if they were actually reusing backgrounds from SatAM? Were they? I have no idea. But it's such a strange show!
@@HillTopTerebi my theory is the animation company was given access to some of the production art from Sonic satam, though I do wish they didn't is the sonic satam Robotnik design becuse The Voice doesn't match up to the design in my honest opinion
I really enjoyed Sonic Underground; all 40 episodes are great. my favorite episode in that show is the Underground Masquerade, which is episode 8.

My brother and I found an episode of this show on TH-cam about ten years ago. The fact we couldn't make it even halfway through is very telling.

This show isn't good...but I love it lol 😅. I remember not liking it when it came out, but over time its cheesiness has been fun. Maybe i just miss the 90's?
Yes, you're being too harsh about Underground. Sure, the quality of songs is disappointing outside of theme song and outro music, but the background music is phenomenal in the show. The royalty aspect is not bad by itself in Underground, SatAM and Archie, it just wasn't executed properly, but the world-building is great.
Um, I know it's unpopular, but the tone of Underground is more grim than SatAM's, when watching season 1 it was a bit too campy for dystopia story with Knothole not being found. Also, say what you want about Sonia and Manic being cringey OC's, they're way more developed and memorable than game canon main cast, let alone every SatAM version of Freedom Fighters except Dulcy and Uncle Chuck
Overall, despite the lackluster continuity, the show aged up much better than the rest. Also, the show isn't the worst when there are Sonic X(both versions) and some of Adventures of Sonic exist
The only thing this show gets credit foe is the opening thene but other than that it's boring, mediocre, convoluted, and forgettable. It doesn't follow the source material, and it doesn't have Tails, Sonic's classic sidekick. Sonic is already a lame character, giving him siblings isn't going to make it any better especially bad writing. Tails was an original character and without him, Sonic just feels empty in his own series.
It's weird how this was greenlit after a failed attempt of reviving back Satam only for it to end on a cliffhanger like the previous show.
Oh yeah Fun Fact: There were some official Sonic Underground merch believe it or not; a Sonic and Knuckles plush that you would get at Denny's restaurants and an LCD game from Tiger.
The dubbed version of Underground that you watched is actually way more boring. Most of the jokes and wordplay are ignored in the English dub

This was actually the first ever Sonic media i had ever seen. Looking back on it now, this is probably why i didnt like sonic at first
For me it was either the first or the second - the other one was a (very fun, might I add) let's play of Sonic CD.
Then it was a let's play of 06. Yeah, I had a rough start with Sonic. ;/
I remember as a kid I wasted my pocket money on Buying a volume of sonic underground on dvd as it was dirt cheap not knowing how bad the show actually was.
When I watched it I hated it I remember watching one episode and it was just bizarre I also remember turning it off when sonic and his siblings started singing even as a kid I thought it was cringe and this is coming from a guy who still thinks the adventures of sonic the hedgehog was a good sonic cartoon.
However it wasn't all bad news I remember also buying the sonic OVA on Dvd as well as underground and I freaking loved that short movie with sonic vs metal sonic.
Honestly the only good thing about underground was its theme song nothing else was remotely memorable or enjoyable when I forced myself to watch a few more episode's a few years later & not even knuckles could save this show for me and he's my favourite sonic character.
If you ever go for Sonic X, please watch the Japanese version with subs

Ngl tho, a lot of us actually loved the show. Like i have a feeling that the fans are legit 50 50 with this show like people don’t realise how many people like it, I used to love it but I get why it’s also shit lol
I had faint memories of this show when I was younger, I didn't remember the name of it until I saw a clip of the intro on TH-cam. So many memories flooded into my mind, and now the show is really nostalgic to me. Despite what others may think, I really enjoyed this strange point in sonic media.
Probably the funniest aspects of Sonic Underground for me was that 6 feet underground thing from Vinesauce Joel and those really bizarre fan videos from Tamers12345.
If it had come out in 1992 it would have been forgivable, but this mf show came out AFTER sonic adventure, just throw all those voices and lore and set pieces right out the window
I feel like they just wanted to make a shitty kids show, but someone forced them to slap sonic and robotnik on it.
Sonic Underground's biggest problem on the one hand is being released too late, and also looking like another show that was better received.
I maybe late to the party but I still love Sonic Underground even if not everyone can enjoy the same product badlse on taste..however if Sonic Prime had that apart of there multiverse we might get a actual conclusion after the show was cancelled which still burns me to this day

Some of the concepts it introduced definitely had potential to be great, but I don't think all of them are good.
So... probably my most vivid memory of this show.... Wasn't the show itself. When I was a kid, there was a Tiger electronic game based off it.
But, it had a gimmick. There was a spinning marble inside it. You presses a lever, and it would zoom across a clear part at the top.... Yeah... being a Tiger game. The spin was more fun than the actual game.... Still, I wanted it for whatever reason, and got it for Christmas. So... I have a fond memory of it regardless of the game's quality overall.
As for the show itself.... I didn't see it until for some weird reason, it played on Disney XD of all channels.... And yeah, not a fan of it. I even liked AoStH much more. (Which played on Toon Disney when I was a kid.)
Also... why didn't Disney just pick SatAM for that time slot.... I would have happily watched that.
As a person who didn't watch Underground, I would like to reassure you about the tone of your video anyway. You sound always respectful to your watchers, even when you speak about what you don't like, so don't worry ^^

Im watching for the first time (didn't have cable as a kid). Honestly, i like it! As a kid im not sure how i would have responded, but as an adult who hasn't seen "classic" Sonic in FOREEEEVER... I love it! It's like i traveled back to my childhood. I actually like the theme (but the songs do suck though).
Sonic Underground's story as to "Why" this came about is.. one of the strangest stories out there.
Basically Ben Hurst had been begging SEGA and DIC to let him do SATAM Season 3
1999 rolls around and Sega wants a show that adapts Sonic Adventure so kids will run out and buy a dreamcast
So Ben decides he's going to taoe that and trojan horse in a SATAM Season 3 under this project.
Meanwhile DIC is running out of cash and gets the brilliant idea to do a musical show about Robin Hood and Maid Marian's descendents living in the future and having to stop the Sherrif of Nottingham from marrying their mother.
The show was to be made musical with the idea they would be able to license the music out and make bank that way.
They only had budget for one show so they just used Sonic characters for the robin hood show and called it a day.
Sega was so pissed they pulled DIC's Sonic license and worked with a Japanese company to get the show they really wanted.. which we now know as Sonic X

My favorite episode is the one where Manic drops a robot baby and it explodes and he cries. I do not remember anything else that happened in the show.
I dropped a whopping 2052043 millon Dollars on some sweet Sonic swag. Got myself some Sonic merchandise that would make your head spin faster than Sonic himself.
Oh, and let's not forget the collection of Marvel and DC Superheroes I've got under my belt. Those guys have got nothing on my hoard of figurines, comic books, and movie discs.
And you know what else is worth every penny? The Transformers movies by Michael Bay. Those are some epic CGI explosions right there

1. the show was heavily rushed, and 2 episodes were made per week because Dic wanted episodes made as quickly as possible. this is why the animation for the show (which was produced by a Taiwanese animation studio might I add), looked so rushed. also the theme song sequence was animated by a completely different studio (one based in Spain) who wasn't rushed nearly as much.
2. the animation was done before the scripts for some odd reason which is why the lip movements are off, because the writers had to write a script based on what was already happening in the animation.
sorry about this. I just hate how people blame everyone who made the show without knowing the full story of the show's development. if the show wasn't as rushed as it was and given some real respect, I guarantee that it would be good.

@@robertlupa8273 DIC and Sega didn't give the show the time and money to truly blossom because they both wanted it done as soon as possible. DIC wanted a cartoon with songs in it for royalties while Sega wanted a new Sonic cartoon to promote hype for the Sega Dreamcast. I feel like the show could've been good if it had more time and money put into it.

@@robertlupa8273 I think the show has plusses. I liked the story, I liked the characters, and I liked their unique portrayal of Robotnik. in fact, I saw a list of episode titles for a potential unofficial season 2 that I don't want to go to waste

I watched this when I was younger and I remember liking it a lot, but when I tried to watch it again a while back I just couldn't go more than 4 episodes
I hate this show.
Sonic Underground isn't a bad show. It has lots of good childhood nostalgia for me. I watched it as a child. Re watched it recently. It's pretty Kool. Plus this is the darkest most evilist sounding Robotnick ever. I just have such fond memories of this show. Plus I like the idea of Sonic having a brother and sister and a mother. Basically Sonic The Hedgehog is royalty. That's something the other shows never explained. It's way past cool. I don't care if anyone dislikes it. I still have such fond memories of this show from my childhood. It needs another season and reboot/remake like the SATAM Sonic The Hedgehog Freedom fighters series is continuing on.
imo Underground could have been good... starting with the singing if it wasn't the combat.... like for example if the singing was a bit at the end like a "they are a band that caters to the Freedom Fighters" and was 100% skippable..... I would consider it decent.....
Underground disgusted me as a kid and while I do strangely like the Sonic-as-royalty angle (probably because of Sonic and the Black Knight) for the most part I'm glad it's been forgotten.

I remember watching a few episodes of the show a few years after it came out, and I remember liking it for what it was. I remember really liking Sonia and Manic for some reason, their weapons were cool, and I didn't mind the singing at the time.
I recently started watching the series again, and honestly, while it's not as good as AoStH or SatAM, I don't think it's half as bad as people say. Sonia and Manic are fun characters, although Sonic feels a little bland by comparison. Jaleel White does a great job, making them sound similar, but different enough that you can tell them apart.
To be fair, I'm also watching them one at a time, and not bingeing 6+ episodes.
But I will agree that, aside from the opening theme, the music sucks. Maybe it gets better, but the ones I listened to were terrible. But ultimately, I don't think they're bad enough to ruin the rest of the episode.
Aside from the music, I'd say the worst part of the show is Robotnik. He's just bland, which is something Eggman should never be. Maybe if they brought back Jim Cummings, that would've been enough to save the show.
Also, while the plot is crazy, what gets me is that the seer apparently never told the Queen WHEN to return, which seems like an important detail. So, she's just stuck in limbo, wanting to reunite with her children, but worried that doing so too soon might cause something bad to happen.
All the characters + music were equally great, so many cool moments
I watched the show as a kid, too. I even remembered a thing or two after all those years - notably, a scene from "Flying Fortress" where Sonia is probably meant to look badass, shooting at the titual fortess with her keytar... but she's wearing bikini and opaque shades, so she ends up looking completely ridiculous. 😂 I also really liked - and still like! - the credits theme. It doesn't even have any lyrics that you could grow tired of! And that clip of Queen Aleena morphing into Robotnik is just _soooo_ satisfying, especially with the music. Weirdly, once I saw it in-context, in the episode "The Price of Freedom", it felt... worse. Must be because I'm used to the credits version. 😅
Still, even with the nostalgia goggles, I can't deny that Underground is pretty bad. When I first heard Sonia's voice (I watched a Polish dub as a kid), I was baffled by how it sounded. I've gotten used to it by now and it doesn't sound that bad anymore, but the shock was still there. And speaking of voices, I genuinely can't rewatch the show in my home language. I don't know if it's my memories of it combined with the low quality of the show, but it just feels... weirdly _bland._ Like, I can't recall where else I heard some of these voice actors nor do I have particularly vivid memories of other shows from Cartoon Network or the like, but these just feel like something you'd hear everywhere and the performance isn't good, but it's not laughably bad enough to be memorable for that. The only good thing I can say about it is that I think I sort of prefer Sleet's dub voice compared to his original English one. Oh, and Robotnik is voiced by the same guy who voices Mr Krabs in Polish, so that's a fun mental image. :D
However, I'm still glad that I watched Underground when I did. For all of its flaws, I still like some of its ideas, which I doubt I would've cared about as much had I not seen it when I was young. I really like Sonia and Manic. I _sort of_ like the idea of Robotnik being a somewhat "grounded" conqueror/dictator and the rich people sucking up to him, without care of what he's doing as long as they're fine _(now that I wrote it down, it reminds me of some books I had to read at school :/),_ but it definitely could've been executed waaay better and honestly I'm not sure if it fits a Sonic show, even with SatAM in mind. Back to stuff I enjoy though, nostalgia made me love some of the sound design, _especially_ the stock electronic sound they use whenever Sonic runs super fast. It's so "euphoric." For similar reasons, I like the vehicles used by the triplets - their van and Sonia's bike especially.
As for the music _(yes this deserves its own paragraph)..._ well... The opening song is cool and I applaud the singer for giving his best _(I love it when people singing in cartoons sound like they're having fun, it can save even the worst movie in my eyes),_ but after hearing the first few seconds dozens of times through memes and whatnot, I grew tired of it. >_> I already mentioned how much I love the credits theme however, so it sorta balances out. As for the mid-episode songs, I didn't really listen to too many of them, but the few that I did and actually enjoyed are pretty dang good. Highlights include "I Wish I Could Go Faster" _("pareerareera, pa pa pararaa" :D)_ and "I Can Do That For You" _(not only are the instrumentation and the beat suprisingly nice, but the singing is really good. Childish, but in an innocent kind of way. And Manic's singer is just killing it
I love sonic underground and love the cheese rock music & I love all if the stuff from .D.i.C.
I loved this cartoon in 2015 all the way through 2018 cuz I had a MAJOR crush on Manic. I've moved on since then but I definitely don't hold the show in THAT high regard anymore... I don't hate it, never will, but I don't love it either hehe
I watched liek t episodes of this when I was like 9 or 10 and I gotta say I was cringing throughout the whole 22 mins of each episode. It didn't feel anything like sonic and I haven't watched it since. I do however think satam is pretty decent for what it is and aosth is alright, harmless fun (...sometimes, alot of fetish stuff in it tho)

Back in like kinder I started watching Sonic underground because I thought sonic looked scary. I ended up really liking it and it got me into sonic. I don’t remember much of it, but when I wear the opening for the first time in about a decade I still remembered all the lyrics to the opening. So I feel like even though it undoubtedly sucks, it’s kinda important because it’s what got me into sonic.
There’s this and then there’s the Sonic movies. Let’s destroy Sonic.

I watch sonic underground when I was younger and loved it because I thought sonics sister was Amy since she was the only girl character I knew when I was three but now it’s fine I guess… the song slaps hard.manic reminds of a danganronpa character and Sonic sister is really annoying.
I love the songs of the show and this ain't even the show that I started the franchise so you should at least watch the whole series but like I thought you hate it because it ain't a season three to sonic the hedgehog for God sakes people show stop with that it really is a old record on play get over it honestly I personally think that sonic underground is underrated just because of it's predecessor if you really want a season three read the Archie comics and stop with the hate plus honestly sonic underground actually gives sonic a somewhat better backstory and it's relatable with the drama between siblings and not all the songs are bad sure the ones in the first three episodes isn't great but at least it gives the triplets a great under cover gig and yes that is what the band is for to be used as a undercover gig so just give it up already we will never get a season three of satam so people just calling the show bad because of what it's not really annoying I swear this is why at times I hate being apart of this fandom and I'm sorry if that bugs you all but honestly that's the truth
