My Gameboy styled one just came in the mail. I'm absolutely in LOVE with it. The d pad and buttons are great, but weirdly, my favorite thing about it is the color scheme. That faded beige, that dark red. Really makes me nostalgic for late 90s - early 00s technology.
I’m still really chuffed with my SF30 pro controller, even though I wore out the left joystick playing SSBU. The shape and those lovely coloured buttons take me back......now I just waiting for them SNES games on Switch
Can you elaborate on wearing out the left joystick a bit? I'm interested in Pro+, but I'm worried that it's gonna have the very same issues I encountered with both first-party and third-party controllers I bought for Smash (drift/snapback).

3:02 This isn't true, the Switch does register analogue trigger inputs, there's just no official Nintendo Switch controller that has analogue triggers and there are very few games that have the option to use them. You can either use the SN30 Pro+ or Gamecube controllers with the adapter to play Trials Rising with analogue triggers.
I bought one about a month ago after watching this video and it's absolutely perfect! Discovered 8BitDo via this channel. Great videos, keep it up man!
Ewww can't understand why anyone would do this. First thing I'm going to do is make mario odyssey have the proper control scheme because nintendo only lets you change the 2d mario controls for some reason
@@bex-- Oh, thanks for clearing that up. To be honest I'm not used to the Nintendo button config. and I just thought (Y) would be the top button. (I haven't really used any nintendo console, the Switch should be my first really soon)
I love this guy.. I finally bought a Switch a month ago and found his channel while searching for essentials. This channel saved me from charging my console improperly, buying the poorly made, drift-happy, 75 dollar Official pro controllers or using their poorly made, drift-happy, 75 dollar joycons... I bought an 8bitdo SF30pro and fell in love with it so I got the SN30pro right after because of the different color scheme and to let friends use instead of joycons on game night, then I had to get the 8bitdo adapter to use one of my PS4 controllers since it was cheaper than another controller so, counting the joycons out of grip, I have 5 controllers for my Switch now at a fraction of the cost. I nabbed a Sandisk 400gb micro sdxc last week as well since I'm already full on the console. This channel has been a big help in saving money and finding the best gear because I grew up with complete distrust for third party controllers and wouldn't have given them a chance. I hate to remember the Mad Cat days before Rock Band guitars.. SO, safe to say I'll be buying The SN30proPLUS as well and keeping an eye on the channel. Thanks Bob!
I ordered mine weeks ago and it's getting here Friday God I don't want to wait but it's only a few days. Thanks for the video I always trust your input on these matters. You've never led me astray in the past Bob and I know this controller will be great!
Gday Bob. My SN30Pro has been my go to on Switch and PC for Hollow Knight, Celeste, et al since I grabbed it earlier this year. Also used it a bit for 3D games. Great quality unit so it was a no brainer for me to the new one. My Pro+ is somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, winging its way to my waiting hands. Thanks for a great review.
There is at least 1 game that makes use of analog triggers on the Switch: Trials Rising (confirmed with the analog triggers on the gamecube controller). There might be a few more Switch games that can.
They have that for some of the other controllers. Ironically I ordered the US SNES color variant and got the EU one. If you're searching for these, it's SFC30 rather than SN30. There's no SFC30 Pro+ right now, but there's an SFC30 and SFC30 Pro.
8bitdo was going to but couldn't as the design is trademarked and the SNES classic edition being made recently made it much more harder to release a controller in that style. Won't be coming out any time soon.
The removable 8bitdo battery is to support 2 AA batteries. Also they are going to release a firmware update to make the custom software compatible with other platforms. And the Dpad is improved over the sn30 pro
I will say that I love my 8bitdo sn30 pro controller, BUT be aware that their customer service is not the best. I had an issue with joystick drift when connecting to my Mac, and their solution via email was to not play on Mac. So yeah, excellent controller, but you’re on your own with any issues.
@@victoristratevmi But this is something she or anyone should be able to do with their product without a problem. But Doctor, my ribcage hurts when I breath. Doctor: Then don't breath ...
My left stick doesn't drift in games, but I do get random left inputs from it, and its especially noticable when I'm on TH-cam on the switch. Every 5 to 10 seconds the title of the video pops up because random inputs keep happening.
Hi. I had a similar issue with my wired SN30pro . I contacted the customer service team and they send me a firmware update and instructions to update the controller and after that it worked perfect. I don't know if this is useful for you after 9 months but either way good luck
Thank you for this video. It made me finally make the decision to purchase the SN30 Pro+ black edition! This controller feels so good in my hands! Enjoying your videos, excellent to the point content!
The 8bitdo Gameboy edition SNES is really neat too for Mario Maker. Except that there's no ZL or ZR so I have to use another controller to activate the menu coming from the intro. Edit: I have since found out that if you update the firmware of the 8bitdo Gameboy edition SNES controller you can press down and select I think to activate it in the Mario Maker main menu. That's what made me keep it. :)
@@Gunar-xe8fn I have since found out that if you update the firmware of the 8bitdo Gameboy edition SNES controller you can activate the menu in Mario Maker 2 with the triggers. Or if it was a Mario Maker 2 update. Not sure, but at least I can use mine now so! :D
In regard to the original SN30 Pro "Using the thumbsticks forces you to hold the controller weird" - that's cuz you're not holding it right. Instead, allow your hands to wrap around the curvature of the SN30 Pro, making the shoulder buttons lie more under the middle part of your index fingers, rather than the finger tips. It's actually a classic style of way for holding a Super Nintendo controller, and it lines your thumbs up perfectly for the thumbsticks. The original SN30 Pro is my absolute preferred controller for Zelda BotW & I'm nasty with it. So for me personally I don't need a version with grips and I don't like these newly designed trigger buttons either.
Just bought the new model switch (not the lite) and Zelda botw, and I just ordered this controller from amazon with the 400gb sandisk sd card you recommended. Don't let me down, man.
@CubeWaker Yeah I looked it up, I'm good tho, I have emulators on my pc. I'm really only getting Nintendo exclusives on my switch, all other indies and cross platform stuff I'll get on pc or PlayStation no problem.
Thank you so very much for pronouncing 8bitdo correctly. Anytime I hear 8bitdoe the little pedantic part of my soul starts screaming. I'm really loving this controller but found it strange how some features are different depending on which colour option you choose. 8bitdo's website makes no mention of this so make sure you pick the one you want. Personally I can't stand the concave X and Y buttons on the purple/grey model as they just leave a deep imprint and eventually blister my thumb. Would love to see a version of this with Wii U Pro Controller stick and button layout, my personal favourite that no one has yet copied. Nevermind, the NS Magic Adapter will see me through until they do. Thanks for the great content Bob.
After a few months of using this controller this is my everything else controller. I use it for Mario kart, use it for breath of the wild, sometimes for smash but I use a GameCube controller, this controller is good at everything I played every game and it’s fun and as a PlayStation player this is the best controller
i actually prefer the symmetrical analog sticks than the one that is swap with the d-pad, probably because i owned a ps3 and a wii with the wii pro controller
I have a sn30pro+, and it’s amazing. I use it for my switch, pc and phone. The control stick position isn’t a problem, the only gripe I have is that there isn’t an off button. I have to remove the battery and put it back in.
A year later and this one video persuaded me into buying this and im honestly beyond happy on my decision not only is it good but the controller actually came with grips since the plastic on the controller ends up getting worn and ends up slippery. Thank you a ton. To this day I have 6 of these and no switch pro controller 👌🏿
I'm Thinking about getting this instead of the official pro controller I got my Switch in December so I'm still growing my game collection but I know I'm not gonna be stuck with the joycons forever so I wanna get the best controller possible for the job. This looks great I play a good mix of 2d & 3d games which ever one does it best is what I'll go with.
8bitdo likes to rip off Nintendo controllers so much that they even did what the Wii did by making a controller without handles and then making another controller with handles and also with slightly different shoulder buttons. Though Nintendo removed analog with their revision and yes the Original Classic Controller had analog even if it was only two stage. Edit: to say I know it is a coincidence but still funny none the less
3 nice benefits I see with this controller over the DS4 when used with the switch: 1. Naturally connects with the switch without a usb MyFlash or the sort that the DS4 requires. 2. Can still be used while charging whereas ds4 needs to be unplugged. 3. Can use normal AA batteries or other type of AA rechargeables with a simple slide off of the back for access. DS4 has to be opened in 2 shells just to get to the battery.
I need a GameCube button layout one. Many Nintendo games have one button you use constantly. If they had a GameCube layout that was also remappable that would be the icing on the cake for me
perfect timing on this because my pro controller and all of my left joycons now have drift. Thanks Nintendo! ... man I remember the days when the big N made the best controllers on the market.... I miss those days.
8bitdo is great; I recently bought a Switch and instead of spending so much in a controller I just bought the bluetooth adaptor so I can play Nintendo Switch with my Dualshock 4 or Xbox controller, is soooo practical!
I heard there was an adapter made by someone else that allowed you to use motion controls with your Xbox One controller on the switch or PS4 and it even had a button on it that could be used for screenshot and I heard it also allowed the older Xbox controllers without Bluetooth to work with Bluetooth on PC
I use the sf 30 pro, switch pro, dual sense and the original Sega Saturn BT-Controller from retro-bit. I guess we got a very dangerous joypad addiction :D . BTW for Christmas I‘m gonna get the 8BitDo arcade Stick. I‘m so excited :) PS: I’m a big fan of your work. U r the last fresh TH-camr Greetings from Cologne Germany
Well the Dual Shock was just the original PS1 controller with 2 thumbsticks, and the PS1 controller itself was just an upgraded SNES controller, so it makes sense that 8-Bit-Do upgrading the same controller layout would arrive at the same controller.
I bought the controller straight after I watched this video! However, three things I think should be mentioned: 1. The controller requires manually turning it on every time you use it, which can be quite annoying comparing to the pro controller which you can just press any button once and connect. 2. The 8BitDo doesn't support HD vibration, this may not be a big deal for many, but sometimes that HD rumble makes a huge difference for some games like Splatoon or even Animal Crossing. Lastly, this controller doesn't support Amiibo connection, which is the biggest con for me personally, especially for those of you who enjoy the Amiibo feature. Besides that, great controller and great video!
I bought my SN30 pro as a “second Nintendo Switch pro controller”, long long time a go and I love that ting. I bought it because of 3 reasons... 1. it was a lot more portable, perfect for traveling. 2. The D-pad or more specifically I wanted to feel like a 6 to 8 year old again while playing Mario Kart (I had/have a DS lite that i used to play Mario Kart DS on and i wanted to bring that feeling to my Switch) Yes I know a D-pad is not optimal when playing racing games, but it is Mario Kart how could you take it seriously. If i want to play a racing sim I would just play on my wheel setup connected to my PC or Xbox. 3. Price 350 SEK why not try it i though (a official pro controller cost about 700 to 800 SEK for reference) and I’m glad I tried it as I said i love it. However the syncing process is not that great, very picky, you really need to read the instructions and do exactly as they say down to the second.
Important to note, Trials Rising can read analog inputs if you hook up a gamecube controller to your switch. I wonder if it will read them on this controller too!
There’s a 3rd party controller for the switch where you can switch out the location of the d-pad, joysticks and the a,b,x,y buttons. And it’s like half the price of a pro controller. I’ve had it for nearly a year now and I’ve not had a single problem. It’s adaptable to what you need to play. And it has the back buttons as well
absolutely love my SN30 pro controller; especially how effortlessly you can go from switch to PC. i just bought a pro+ and will happily never touch my switch pro controller again. mine drifts occasionally, and takes a good 5-10 minutes to go from switch to PC every time i want to do so.

Nice to see they added the handles.
The removable battery means you can now use regular batteries as well
I have to pick one up now.
ordered this on amazon, still waiting for it. so glad it turned out to be a great controller. i've been waiting for this since the first time i'd seen the g classic edition's pic. it was love at first sight.
you missed 2 things though:
- removable battery pack enables you use 2 aa batteries when in a pinch.
-and no amiibo support.
Assume no amiibo and no system turn on unless otherwise stated for every controller.
Yeah. Using double As will increase its battery life by more than double
The removable battery is there because you can swap in AA's on the fly instead of waiting for the controller to charge

This isn't true, the Switch does register analogue trigger inputs, there's just no official Nintendo Switch controller that has analogue triggers and there are very few games that have the option to use them.
You can either use the SN30 Pro+ or Gamecube controllers with the adapter to play Trials Rising with analogue triggers.
@@J05TI Yeah, you're right, devs would have to implement support for other analog triggers themselves, which nobody seems to do, sadly. :-(
I bought one about a month ago after watching this video and it's absolutely perfect! Discovered 8BitDo via this channel. Great videos, keep it up man!
Have you played Fortnite with it and if you have it is good for fortnite
So with this controller you can change Y to B and B to A for NES Online (More Specifically Super Mario and Super Mario 3)?
Ewww can't understand why anyone would do this. First thing I'm going to do is make mario odyssey have the proper control scheme because nintendo only lets you change the 2d mario controls for some reason
I don't know why you would, but yes. You can
correct
Neiden Asg Because that's the control scheme for Super Mario World. Since the snes buttons are tilted it's difficult to run and jump using A and B.
@@bex-- Oh, thanks for clearing that up. To be honest I'm not used to the Nintendo button config. and I just thought (Y) would be the top button. (I haven't really used any nintendo console, the Switch should be my first really soon)
I like that the D-pad and left analog stick are switched giving it a more symmetrical feel
Yeah, but what about a Backyard Sports Football and Baseball combo plug and play controller All-in-One?
Thanks Bob!
"Or any other 2D game on the Switch that I might want to play like uuuh... Gunvolt"
Ah I see you're a man of culture as well
I bought this controller because of your video. Your review is spot on, this controller is amazing! Thanks again man!
Yes, finally the ultimate perfect Switch controller for my Switch Lite next month, can't wait!!!
Wish you luck
I don't like it
I ordered mine weeks ago and it's getting here Friday God I don't want to wait but it's only a few days. Thanks for the video I always trust your input on these matters. You've never led me astray in the past Bob and I know this controller will be great!
I compared the feel to my ps4 controller, and the Pro plus controller feels way better to me. I love this controller!
Ok thanks
The added battery life makes it tempting :P.
I’ve been waiting for your thoughts on this controller, thank you sir!
There is at least 1 game that makes use of analog triggers on the Switch: Trials Rising (confirmed with the analog triggers on the gamecube controller). There might be a few more Switch games that can.
Trials without this feature would be so damn hard.
Yeah..I need to give that game another chance now. TY!
I've been using this bad-boy since release and it's awesome. Grippy and responsive!
Have you tried it on Android yet? I'm interested in using Playstation Remote Play but I hate the touchscreen controls.
Any issues yet? Thank you!
Does it drift?
How's it held up?
Sold! Thanks for spending so much time and energy with down-to-earth, real reviews.
I’d make the upgrade if they made a Super Famicom/European SNES color scheme variant.
Other platforms or do you mean other 8bitdo controllers because that would be awesome
as long Playstation players, I appreciate this kind of layout more
I just picked up the all-black version of this controller because of this video and I *love* it!
I will say that I love my 8bitdo sn30 pro controller, BUT be aware that their customer service is not the best. I had an issue with joystick drift when connecting to my Mac, and their solution via email was to not play on Mac. So yeah, excellent controller, but you’re on your own with any issues.
It hurts when I do this
Doctor : then don't do it
@@victoristratevmi But this is something she or anyone should be able to do with their product without a problem.
But Doctor, my ribcage hurts when I breath.
Doctor: Then don't breath
...
I have the same problem so i want to buy this
@@Gunar-xe8fn I have since found out that if you update the firmware of the 8bitdo Gameboy edition SNES controller you can activate the menu in Mario Maker 2 with the triggers.
I needed to see this before I brought my pro controller
Got the pro+ off of your recommendation. And getting longer usb c to go wired sometimes. Thanks bro!
I got this used for $25 at a second hand games store. Extremely good value!
which store lmao
Just upgraded from a Switch Lite to a red box Switch, and the 8bitdo Pro Plus is one of the first things I'll buy for playing games like Guacamelee
Just bought the new model switch (not the lite) and Zelda botw, and I just ordered this controller from amazon with the 400gb sandisk sd card you recommended. Don't let me down, man.
Install CFw. So worth it with that 400gb
@@gizmoe187 What's CFw? Oh and the controller is dope. Just bought links awakening digitally, too. Might as well put that storage to good use.
@CubeWaker Yeah I looked it up, I'm good tho, I have emulators on my pc. I'm really only getting Nintendo exclusives on my switch, all other indies and cross platform stuff I'll get on pc or PlayStation no problem.
Just got one today, it's my first 8BitDo controller. I'm loving it, they've made a fan.
I always assumed it was pronounced 8Bit DOH - as in Ninten DO.
It is, this guy also says mare-io
It is pronounced doh
My father noticed that the D-pad is a crum smaller than the one on the original SNES controller. No wonder ny D-pad felt a touch loose.
The pro controllers are more difficult for my younger nephews to use, so these SN30 controllers would work a lot better for their smaller hands
I want it badly. You already convinced me to buy my SN30 Pro and now I think you’ve convinced me to buy the Pro+.
Someone didn't like that Switch's original pro controller seemed similar to an Xbox One controller so they made one in the shape of a PS4 controller!
I use an oem gamecube controller and I live without the left bumper.
Think of it, that thumb curl is what everyone who play Playstation does everytime...shiversss
I have to remove the battery and put it back in.
hold "start" button until your gamepad turns off.
A controller with it's own software for PC?
Omg, pls yes!
Damn Bob were both wearing the same shirt today! (Yes I know you filmed this a couple days ago 😜)
Get it. I have the pro controller and yeah this one blows it away. The D-Pad for the pro controller is fucking atrocious
I'm using a sn30 pro with a 3D printed grip. It works well enough
Where'd you get one?
8bitdo likes to rip off Nintendo controllers so much that they even did what the Wii did by making a controller without handles and then making another controller with handles and also with slightly different shoulder buttons. Though Nintendo removed analog with their revision and yes the Original Classic Controller had analog even if it was only two stage.
Edit: to say I know it is a coincidence but still funny none the less
@@bland9876 It was fun to run-on past every red squiggle in that comment.
3 nice benefits I see with this controller over the DS4 when used with the switch:
The macros would be so useful for mass releasing Pokémon!
I need a GameCube button layout one. Many Nintendo games have one button you use constantly. If they had a GameCube layout that was also remappable that would be the icing on the cake for me
Thank you for saying “8bitdo” correctly.
Eight bit doe
I watched this video and immediately bought this controller. I shall return when it arrives.
perfect timing on this because my pro controller and all of my left joycons now have drift. Thanks Nintendo! ... man I remember the days when the big N made the best controllers on the market.... I miss those days.
You can fix the left stick drift for about $10 and 20 minutes of your time.
@@Syn-eo7yv and reskin btw
8bitdo is great; I recently bought a Switch and instead of spending so much in a controller I just bought the bluetooth adaptor so I can play Nintendo Switch with my Dualshock 4 or Xbox controller, is soooo practical!
I heard there was an adapter made by someone else that allowed you to use motion controls with your Xbox One controller on the switch or PS4 and it even had a button on it that could be used for screenshot and I heard it also allowed the older Xbox controllers without Bluetooth to work with Bluetooth on PC
"I think those people are stupid".
"Playing games on my MacBook". Was tilted but not anymore haha. Not after that.
LMFAO I know I was like wtf he genuinely cannot call people stupid after that... Now gotta keep this channel out of recommended since it's just bs
@@Ant_Stark lol, he can take his "Marry-oh maker" and gtfo
I use the sf 30 pro, switch pro, dual sense and the original Sega Saturn BT-Controller from retro-bit. I guess we got a very dangerous joypad addiction :D . BTW for Christmas I‘m gonna get the 8BitDo arcade Stick. I‘m so excited :)
PS: I’m a big fan of your work. U r the last fresh TH-camr
Greetings from Cologne Germany
Jesus, the snes controller has mutated so far it's almost unrecognizable.
Noooo this is the Nintendo PlayStation controller from an alternate universe.
@@SentinelSeptim
You could not live with your failed button layout, and where did that bring you?
Well the Dual Shock was just the original PS1 controller with 2 thumbsticks, and the PS1 controller itself was just an upgraded SNES controller, so it makes sense that 8-Bit-Do upgrading the same controller layout would arrive at the same controller.
@@MrHatoi it just doesn't feel right though...
Nintendo made a controller with the same layout for the Wii 10 years ago.
2:15 best controller on this latest generation. Only US citizen prefer the XBOX One controller
Maybe. What throws me off is the placement of abxy.
I got mine yesterday and it rules. Simple and easy to use.
I definitely prefer the asymmetrical location of thumbsticks.
Like the Xbox controller, they’re really comfortable
There’s a 3rd party controller for the switch where you can switch out the location of the d-pad, joysticks and the a,b,x,y buttons. And it’s like half the price of a pro controller. I’ve had it for nearly a year now and I’ve not had a single problem. It’s adaptable to what you need to play. And it has the back buttons as well
Joystick drift???? If not, this is a great controller sure!!!
There's ZERO DRIFT ON THIS. I've had mine for a while.
absolutely love my SN30 pro controller; especially how effortlessly you can go from switch to PC. i just bought a pro+ and will happily never touch my switch pro controller again. mine drifts occasionally, and takes a good 5-10 minutes to go from switch to PC every time i want to do so.
