    While there's many ways to approach mining I feel this is the most reliable for new players and is best suited to be the very first mining craft you create.. We will of course go into more complex designs later in the series :)
    Was also derping out a bit with this episode, kept forgetting parts!

      +w4stedspace You might want to add rotor handle for solar panels, so they follow the sun (giving around 18,5 each at any moment after sunrise).
      Also, did you try to create effective wheeled drill with robotic hand?
      I spent like 6 hours fighting the bugs when terrain change it's structure due to drilling and destroys my entire craft, not to mention drill itself become overweighted and breaks the arm, so i have to manually transfer the ore out of it into storage.

    +W4stedspace , a full cargo of stone would weigh the same in x1, x5, or x10, it's just in the x10 there's ten times as much stone (by volume) and in x5 there's five times as much stone (by volume). This was a balancing mechanic to make it so people playing at inventory modifiers weren't disadvantaged compared to the x1 people after the cargo update.
    I'd put some "power efficiency" modules on the refinery, and move the assembler so you can put 4 on it as well, this would greatly reduce the power needed by both of them, reducing it to about a full solar panel for each the refinery and the assembler. This is helped because, besides the 8 motors required for 4 of them (so 16 in total for both refinery and assembler), this is entirely iron. Exact numbers: with 0 power efficiency modules they run at 560 kW, and with 4 installed they run at 112kW, at maximum efficiency a (large ship) solar panel will create 120kW.

    Important note on batteries: if some batteries are set to discharge, and some to recharge, the discharging batteries attempt to recharge the recharging batteries, at 80% efficiency.
    THIS IS A REALLY FAST WAY TO LOSE ALL YOUR POWER FOR NOTHING.
    You are better off leaving all boxes unchecked (and leaving some backup batteries off) while refining and assembling.

    • @w4stedspace
      @w4stedspace  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +r3dp9 Yup, but as mentioned in this vid it sometimes switches battery states when you reload the game I think, either way they change sometimes without me doing anything! Wasn't an intended setup. Only time I have some batts charging and others diischarging is when I'm charging up the miiner batteries.. kinda have to then.

    • @r3dp9
      @r3dp9 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +w4stedspace Hmm, didn't know reloading the game could change the batteries. I'll have to keep that in mind. Sounds like you'll be explaining the batteries in detail in the next episode.
      I look forward to testing your miner design, along with the right click trick. So far your tutorials have been extremely thorough and easy to follow, I really appreciate how you've chosen to do this series.

      From the video, looks like you only welded up the second battery on the miner then went on to other things. Didn't seem to have switched it out of it's starting state.
      Battery 2 welded at 23:07 then you immediately go on to your nifty coasting engine group. Re-watched video until your edit cut and didn't see you go to Battery 2.

    Came to say big thank you for making these vids, when I started out Space Engineers your basic survival guide helped me alot as a stepping stone into the wider Space Engineers world. Having over 200+ hours of building fun of all sorts of crazy stuff. And it's all thanks to you my dude, cheers! I've watched and followed your vids to the letter and learnt how to build everything. I kinda miss those giant landers, they had a better tutorial level of "I can repurpose this into a flying base" or just turn it into a base wherever you land afterwards. The smaller new lander you get doesnt do that as much, other than a Mining Ship perhaps.

    Please make more episodes. This series is awesome. Just got into the game a week ago and have been playing hours each day cuz it's addicting as hell. I've managed to make exact duplicates of your ships and I have upgraded them a little and used a few mods like the small ship blocks mod so I could put a driving seat on my rover so it would be easier to drive. Nice vids. Keep em up. Subbed!

    I like to say hi, and THANK YOU! I am fairly new to SE, but due to your explanations of things, I have learned a great deal.
    Seeing as your doing Power next episode...
    Most of the time folks are tearing the lander down completely, and in doing so are losing the batteries. I have found a solution for it, and a way of saving them.
    I don't know how to make videos, so thought if I explain to you, you might be able to replicate.
    I build a small atmo ship, basicly 2 small thrusters in all directions, except down. Down I put 2 large. 2 Gyros, and build the landing gear. Chop the top off the ship, and all but 1 connecting blocks, land the flyer on the battery, lock gear, chop block, fly up just a bit, add merge block, and add merge block to station, fly to base connect..rinse repeat.

    Small tip for a more comfortable mining: Connect a small conveyer sorter+ejector to your conveyer system and let it drop all stone/ice you're picking off while mining.
    You can mine longer and won't waste refinery space with stone in this way.

    This is probably one of the most viable mining ships (love the explanation about the forward thrusters).
    If you didn't want to remove the backward thruster next to the cargo hold, you could have just connected the pipes to the connector above it.

    Very well done tutorial, even I could understand it.
    I discovered that you can override your thrusters (up or down) and in combination with "damping" the reverse ones, you get a nice control with very little power usage in atmo.
    Subbed ;)

    Very nice starter mining ship, everything it needs ... except perhaps one thing, which ain't that important, but for me is part of the realism. A merge block on the back end of the ship, just in case you run out of power in a tunnel , will ensure you can hook up your stranded miner to a recovery vehicle. Off course you would need materials to build such a vehicle, which is not in the budget when you just start out, but later ...

  • @TalesOfWar
    @TalesOfWar 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can type in the thrust direction in the search box by the way, no need to select each one to see the name.

  • @accel1leon952
    @accel1leon952 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    A few things. Thrusters do not care where they are on the ship. As long as they are not part of a separate grid (i.e. connected to a rotor or piston not directly on the ship) they always apply their thrust to the center of mass. So thrusters can be asymmetrical and not cause any rotation. And the 10x inventory setting your kinda right on, it scales the volume containers and you can hold but also inversely scales the weight. So a full medium cargo hold on 1x will weigh the same as 10x but hold 1/10th the volume. So if your ship supports a full load on 10x it will on 1x too, albeit its a smaller load but both loads weigh the same.

    • @ArkantosNilsson
      @ArkantosNilsson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      also inventory size does not only affect cargos, as WastedSpace said. it affects your personal inventory, and the inventory of every block in the game: refineries, cockipts, assemblers, drills, welders, grinders, etc

    Thank you for making this video! i couldn't figure out how to make a mining ship without it getting stuck in the ground. At the Moment, since the last Patch, you have to be careful with mining.
    First as most SE Players know, there was the change in mining behavior after the Planetary Update.
    Second, on servers... there is a bug at the moment, that can bring Servers to crash if someone mines!
    (Or use a Hyperdrive Engine).
    Oh, and mining from Hand may needs more Time, but it is moch more save on planets, then mining with mashines!
    If you use a hover miner, think of the weight of the Ore and Stones.
    You will need extra Thrusters in Front to hold the balance, and you need a sorter, that will spill out the stones and hold in the Ores, or your Vehicle, flying or not, will become easyly too heavy!
    And have a look on the Surounding behaviors while mining. (Sorry, english isn't my natural Toungle, so I have Problems sometimes to describe some Stuff. ;-) )
    The Driller will break reaaaaly fast, and so all parts that are not saved with Armor!
    Oh, and don't forget a Cam and lights that show backwards!
    That will make it more easy for you to find your way out of the Hole you have digged at the End. ^^
    (Never forget: In the Bowels of a Planets if is much darker then in Space. :D )
    Oh, and if you need good landing gears, but have problems with the actual Landing gears breaking by landing, use small wheels!
    Put them on the Head, so they show down, and put them unter your construction.
    They are very more stable then Landing Gears and pretty stable AND they won't roll if they are "on the head".
    Yes, they need more Components, but if you have to make a emergency landing every Time you like to land and loose your landing Gears, it is the better solution.
    But remember: You have to put a Block AND a Wheel to reach the height of one Landing Gear. (if you like to put one on to lock it to the Ground).
    On Mining Vehicles this can be a Problem. So maybe you should find another spott for the Landing gear, so they won't stuck out from under the Vehicle.
    (Same Trick works on Big Ships with Atmospheric Thrusters too. ;-) )
    AND a last thing: If you go off to mining: Empty your Characters Inventory at Home!
    The Game now puts the weight of all the Character has in its Inventory to the complete mass of the Vehicle,
    If you havn't the options for greater inventory space on, this CAN become a big Problem. ;-)

    @rattrap1985 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I had no idea about rightclicking with ship drills that's really helpful. I actually don't have much to contribute to your advice as it was all solid. Except... putting a small reactor on it would help as it would (very very slowly) refill the batteries. Although, I understand if uranium isn't that plentiful but with the addition of a mining ship... it's going to deserve the expensive stuff since it is getting to your ore and stoof easily.

    I found uranium on my planet, not too deep, so I went after it with my hand drill. I disassembled the small reactor from the lander, built a connector, built a small ship that consists of a conveyor, a connector and three small small ship reactors. Pushed the small ship into the base connector, so now I have a 1.5MW base reactor to charge batteries at night, and can build many nuclear powered small ships to help me manage to get at the super-deep silver deposit I have found. Then I will be able to build the reactors needed for my escape to space.

    I have to admit, i havnt seen any mining concepts beyond "pillar drills", vertical atmospheric miners and strip mining (the last on that list being horribly time consuming) oh, and that bloody worm ... which as amusing as it was, dosnt have much practicality about it - i was hoping that mining would be a little more inventive than a natural gravity rehash of the "whack as many drills on a square head as you can afford" with a side of "make sure she can float" that space mining had been, though now at least some of those wheeled monstrosities people used to come up with to drill through asteroids might actually have some usefulness in a smaller scale, considering how real underground mining operations work, keens ore distribution kinda shoots that in the foot though - i dont think we have ore beyond a certain depth (feel free to correct me if i am infact wrong there), just only where the dark patches show up on the ground.
    I'd still totally like to see some shaft-miners that dont fly ...

    @W4stesSpace, I made a miner that can go from planet to space with moded thrusters but i downloaded my mod with "Steam workshop downloader" and installed them manually for offline play. Its about 16Km from ground up, 4 drills, a crap ton of (startrack looking) modded thrusters. that reaches 20km when its fully extended. It masses up if you're going to fast up,down,left,right and back and forth with out locking the extended drills. Would you like to test it out sometime?

    The rover and the unnamed flyer would probably work more efficiently if operated in tandem. [..] As far as power is concerned, the power upgrade modules can be built with starter materials. Also, I never use the old recharge mode anymore as it just wastes power.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Low Rads
      Well, recharge mode is very handy for connected vehicles to ensure they never go draining their batteries in an attempt to supply power to the base. I treat it like turning the reactors off on any other vehicle. It ensures that all systems are off, and that the vehicle will be ready to go when needed. Discharge I only ever touch when wanting to dismantle a battery tho. And the misleading old semi-auto mode should probably be removed entirely.

    Question that I need answered. How do you get the game to run this stably? I know the first thought is always that by that I mean frame-rate and that I just have the graphics settings too high, or my system is insufficient, but this isn't the case, with the exception of initial render lag, the game runs at a fine frame-rate up until it crashes, furthermore, my computer is definitely sufficient (GTX 970, 16Gb Ram, fx9590 CPU, solid state drives), and it crashes for lots of different things. The game just crashes for simple things, like mining, or when a ship breaks, or anything really, sometimes it just crashes when I load a world. Two more issues, even after the change log saying they fixed it, I still fall through the world, I don't think there is a way to fix that on my end , but still. When mining with a ship, no matter how careful I am with the drills, one will always break, what am I doing wrong?

    How do you quickly switch between remote control after getting on the vehicle? I always have to goto the "G" menu and find "Remote Control" and click on the "Control" button since I can't get any vehicle shortcuts setup while on the chair without actually going into "Control" first.

      Funny thing i discovered on my world, if you have "cargo/random ship encounters" turned on, you will literally have ion-propelled NPC ships drop from the sky left and right ^^ if you're lucky, their reactor or guns get destroyed on the crash and you can safely go in and grind off their ion thrusters and disassemble them to get platinum (and all other materials) galore.

    I feel some notes of my "Most common issue" with mining vehicles would help... Namely the issue that every time I try to mine with a vehicle my drills will spontaneously explode while drilling. Not sure why, but its either the drills tearing themselves appart on the rocks, some weight issue suddenly crashing the ship, or I keep screwing up with the throttle.
    ... I hope its not that last one, but I'm pretty sure its not.

    • @TimbavatiLion
      @TimbavatiLion 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Zexion Sephiroth you might have too much forward thrust. On my first attempt of a somewhat bigger mining ship, i put 3 large rear thrusters on - combined with the gravity, my ship smashed into the ground forcefully when i even slighty tipped the W-key. think about making a "precision mode" group that turns off the majority or all of your rear thrusters, giving you just the tiniest bit of thrust when facing downward.
      Also, put loads of front thrusters on xD 3 large ship thrusters on a 50x inventory size server can carry ~400k ore; so on a 10x inventory size, don't drill more than 80k ore with this kind of setup or your ship will just land face first on the ground and never get up again ^^
      It's a bit of try and error. i advise to get some rock and put it into your ship's cargo and do a test of how much it can carry before you go for an actual mining site.

    • @439sparky1
      @439sparky1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Selmokk I don't understand why people use downward thrusters on planets. If you don't have any, then when you press C to go down then your downward facing thrusters will just turn off and turn back on when you release the key, provided you have inertial dampeners on. It saves fuel, energy, space and makes atmoshperic ships look better.

    • @LunaProtege
      @LunaProtege 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      439sparky1 For some, the issue is that its finiky to do it that way... If only because when you've come to a standstill in mid air, and have no downward thrusters, you still won't go downwards until you are technically moving already.
      Besides that, there's also the fact your ship isn't likely to always be 100% upright... In those cases, it can either slow your horizontal movement during Inertial dampening a little. Or straight up be the one hope you have of making sure it doesn't straight up crash when your nose is to the ground.

    • @TimbavatiLion
      @TimbavatiLion 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or just the fact that, in a drill ship, your rear thrusters become your upwards thrusters once you point the nose down to drill into the ground ;)

    • @439sparky1
      @439sparky1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Selmokk Well I'm not making drill ships anytime soon. I prefer to make an oil rig type of construction to get recources. Something similair to a quarry in minecraft tekkit. As for ships I have a single dropship design with no upwards facing thrusters.

      Regarding the seat, it allows the considerable advantage of having a third person view as opposed to relying on camera via remote control. It also means your miner has infinite range, rather than being confined by the 5km range of it's own antenna, or needing an additional support/relay vehicle immediately.

    So I was working on a new base, a flying ship so I wouldn't have to keep going back and forth to the landed. Noticed a piece of the lander ramp was a bit banged up. The moment I wielded it the landing gear on the lander exploded and the piston I had linked to the miner crushed the back half of it into dust. So glad the game has creative for bs like that. • @zamba136
    @zamba136 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    i personally consider anything above 1x inventory size to be cheating unless you are recording/streaming.
    mainly because when you are engineering a ship, the ship shouldn't be able to hold a bigger cargo than the size of it's containers (this is easiest to see with ore, when you drop it on the ground)
    it does suck that the player inventory is so small, but anything higher than 1x inventory size negates any real engineering challenge.

  • @wmoyer2006

      +Stewart Bates It doesn't appear like warheads need uranium anymore, I think the devs want us to use them for mining, which is awesome for me. I've been experimenting with them, and large warheads actually make massive holes in the ground, which clear away a lot of the stone in the way, it's very nice!

  • @fynnmous66
    @fynnmous66 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to say, this didn't work. The thrust from the single engine was insufficient to carry a full cargo load on x10 cargo capacity. Mining was great as long as I was pointing down, but once both cargo boxes were filled up, I was topping 190k+ kg. As soong as I back out of the hole I was mining in and leveled off, the main engine couldn't keep me up, and the entire thing crashed to the ground and was destroyed. I had to assemble a rudimentary cargo vessel from the remnants just so I could transport my stuff back to base.
    I'd recommend, in the future, that you test these designs "fully loaded" before foisting them off as viable constructs for new players.

    • @w4stedspace
      @w4stedspace  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Husnok D Apoplogies, I wasn't very clear as to the purpose of the pair of cargo containers.. I touch briefly on it at abouut 7:10 but not clearly enough.
      The point behind 2 is for balance, having the weight placed either side of the main engine so the ship doesn't want to tip when you load it up. It does mean that you have a little more cargo capacity than you can fully use (can get to abouut 120k kg) unless you tilt the craft forwards a bit. The plan is for this craft to grow further down the line but in the interim I'll add an annotation to clear things up a bit - as you've seen it would only take about 4 more small thrusters pointing down to level things out and this ship was always intended as a starting point for further building.

      +lpstylaa Try turning your settings down. I had horrid lag and crashes until I went from high textures to medium, then it ran like a dream. Also something with ore detectors and welders will crash the game right now too, and mining causes huge voxel data to be made by the game. Smaller holes, lower settings might fix it, no modded welders or ore detectors either.
