Creator here! Thank you so much for the spotlight, first time to be featured on anything as far as I know of and it has made my week! Just a quick tip to anyone watching: Don't hit the "3" immediately after starting, you should just hit 1 and 4. "3" is mainly for restarting the tbm if you've stopped the cycle for some reason. 1 and 3 do the same thing, 3 builds full tunnel and 1 builds a guide rail onto the launch platform before autotriggering 3 in following cycles :) Shame you didn't show the pipelaying since I spent many hours pulling my hair trying to ad-hoc the damn thing into the tbm after first publishing it without the feature (Clang does not enjoy merges AND connectors hooking many subgrids together I tell you that). Not as fancy as the front welder rack, but the work cycle of it building/connecting/cleaning within pre-established timings while hiding from clang is one of my favorite parts of the build.
this game had so much potential but never took off because... No competitive multiplayer - you can build war ships but can't really go to war against anyone The space environment is so big that its easy to hide your base and ships way out where no one will ever find them - thus making you immune to pvp attack No population to play with or against, its pretty much single player or maybe co op. Development way too slow to hold our interest
A drill capable of self-replicating and extending its drill depth has been something I've been hoping to see in Space Engineers since welders and merge blocks were first introduced.
Ah, don't you mean _Geo Descent Labs_ instead of Elon Musk? Pretty sure GDL could put this to good use to recover their long lost bore drill. But really, Terra Swoop Force was a wonderful playthrough.

The problem I see with this is that you have to have the drills running normally rather then a right click action... this means 12th century progress... why even mess with something that needs a decent redesign.
@Von @Von as the name Implies Nilla is just that.... they just threw the Van in front of it... I actually like this one, it's a little more elaborate than the tunnel bore I built for space. It was basically a flying cylinder with a dropout hatch for stone and 4 sensors to keep itself at a certain distance from the tunnel walls. It worked fine enough to stay unsupervised most of the time. I should update it with remote controls, timer blocks and other "luxuries" to make it a viable standalone ship.
I build something like this years ago, but with a different drillhead. Mine used pistons and rotors to scrape out rectangular holes layer by layer. Eventually, it would have a little drilling rover inside that you could drive out when on a target depth and mine out the surroundings, but I never got to completing it. I was also working on a version that worked like an oil driller, with segments being added from a stockpile, and being placed back in the stockpile when retracting the drill. I think it clanged though, so I abandoned that.
i build something similar and my problem is that as soon as i connect the drill rig with a merge block with the floor below (witch is a station) the drill rig will becom a station and will still stay as a station even when i turn the merge block off does anyone has an idea how to fix this?
Please add this as a survival thing. I'd love to see you guys doing "hit and runs" against the evil green eyes drones and destroying their production and Mining stuff. Maybe even stealing some of their supplies.
Tried it. It went a short distance and then broke. I found two critical problems: one, the mass building up in the cargo containers simply overloads it, and two, it eventually gets out of alignment with the overhead merge blocks and can't lock on to extend itself. The first was fixable by changing the output so it simply dumped the rocks out the back. The second was not.
It is actually quite simple to dig a round or square hole in the ground if you go streight down. The rule is to use pistons in groups of less than 10 at 0.00m/s momentum and lowest settings for strenght. A smal ship bore head on a large ship piston works best as you can more simply avoid catastrophic failure where you lose the borehead Now that we got no uranium on planets, the only option is the tiny battery to connect your smal ship connector to a downward facing large ship connector properly and without having it fall of if unpowered if you accidently unlock it. (4 tiny batterys attatched symetrically around the connector) Use a landing gear on a piston to elevate it to the large ship connector, once on magnetic lock, just remove the piston and landing gear, nudge on the batteries on the side of the connector to align it however you want if you digg a square shaft. Once locked you can build your bore head, where i recommend starting with 5 smal pistons + drill bit above the ground, 13-15m above the ground. I have done this with a 7x7 drillbit digging ~320m down, once your piston shaft exeeds 4 groups (120meters) any failure in setting strenght to minimum will bend the shaft and missalign your drillbit. At this point I dug down with 3 groups, set down my drill bit and detatched it from the above station and retracted the 3 groups. Building large positons from the station in 3 groups of 5 (75m of 80m not including connector) reconnecting the drillbit (a litle bit missaligned, just using pistons to get the connector into megnetic lock. This gives a depth of 30x2m (60m) and 75x2 ((150m)^X) My system tanked first when I got up to 250+ smal pistons in my initial idea where I used 4 suport shafts with merge blocks to add on to the shaft rather than rebuilding the drill bit or risk critical missalignment wher Iwould be unable to reatatch the drill bit. Whith yield modules this has prodused 1.2m ingots of iron with respective amounts of other ores from refining rock. so it is not compleatly wasted. With this system, I'll add on conveyor tubes and digg to the center of the planet in no time (0.1m/s - 0.2 m/s) >.< Should probably learn to program timer blocks for this x.x
A bit over engineered just to dig a hole.... I love the detail though, lol, it's like walking round an actually industrial plant. I usually borrow through with a simple device and then open it up from the inside with a warhead. However, if you don't go deep enough you just end up making a massive, messy crater!
The problem with straight things in space engineers is that the planets are too small. The biggest planets are less than two percent of the size of earth. What starts out straight will quickly become an upwards incline. It’s why all atmospheric ships seem to pull up as you travel long distances with them. Why not just increase the speed if you want it to drill faster? With all those drills you should be able to go at least 0.4 m/s without any problem.
