    Ben in the years we have been servicing those yanmar engines, 95% of the time I discover that the problem is fuel related. Usually due to dirty or contaminated diesel especially after a fuel fill up in far flung areas. A trick I learned from the aviation industry is to always carry an original camel skin or sheep skin chamois (the synthetic stuff will just melt away with the diesel) and a funnel. Basically you line the funnel with the sheep skin chamois just like a coffee filter and pour the diesel through, the chamois will absorb the water and moisture in the fuel and also catch the contaminant particles. With all the preventive maintenance that you are doing I’m pretty sure it will be mostly smooth sailing ahead. Wish you a safe and memorable journey with the family.

      I'm just the retired trucker in this, but I had fuel filters with petcocks on the bottom..if my diesel felt rough, I drained the filter til the water stopped coming out the bottom. We were always getting crappy,watery fuel. Granted,they weren't just sitting at walmart...you had to know where to find them. Are there ways to drain water out of your system..easily ? There's always going to be water contaminating fuel. And it always will go to the bottom of the filter.

    • @kingbernad7345
      @kingbernad7345 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigcity2085 the boats have a similar system called fuel water separators. These are basically fuel filters with a glass bowl on the bottom that has a pet cock underneath it so you can drain out the water and debris. Eventually you need to replace the filter element as it gets clogged and saturated with water and debris and its efficiency greatly deminishes.

      To be fair most people who want to sail around the world don't take many years of staying in the same area talking about crossing the same ocean. I love the channel but it's almost like they are stuck in an infinite loop of fixing things up to be ready, more things break, so they fix the more things and add a few more things, which means more to break a fix later.

    Hi folks. I hear you say, a few times now, that it will be hard to travel to 2 children under 2. Well let me tell you something. As a sailor, since 1983, many times around the world. My wife n I raised 2 children, girl then boy, on board our boats, for more than 18 years. Yep you read that right. We home skooled them, thought them about other cultures, taught them languages and allowed them to see the world, whilst growing up. Of course, there are challenges, but it can be done. Like anyone who "wants" to make sailing a life style, you have to make intersting choices. We travelled before the days of "blogging", so having folks follow our life and choices, we created picture book stories, some aimed at children. I have rebuild our boats 4 times over the 30+ years of sailing and did "most" of the work myself. Self taught in sail making, engines and all the little bits (motors) needed on a family sailing vessel. Hang in there, it can happen, just be determined in the choices you make. Until my wife passed, a few years back, my life was a bliss, all the good and "not" so good things that happen, just smile and make things happen. Take care always.

    Ashley, For 2 years had been having back pain. Several doctors and many tests later (CT scans, sonograms, etc) a german doctor told me to get off gluten. I had been a gluten-free denier, feeling it was a marketing scheme, but after going cold turkey on gluten my back pains went away completely. I've also can confirm that as soon as I reintroduce Guten into my diet my pains come back. Hope you feel better.

    Kudos to you both for showing the other side of sailing. There are fun times but intersected with down times to prepare everything. Then there are the times where the unexpected happens and you need to interrupt the fun with the reality. The end result is to use the down times for education and the fun times for gratification. Thank you so much for taking your extended family along for the trip, we love it.

    Another great video!!! You two are the best, and I love living vicariously though your great videos and adventures. Not to be a nervous nelly, but if that back pain is still with you, go get checked out again. Its only a data point of one, but my Step-Mother had back pain that she ignored for several months after being told it wasn't a UTI or kidney stone, it ended up being a tumor. If its still with you in a week or so, don't let it go, especially if you are going to be offshore for several months.

    Ben, SINCE the start battery was down when You tried starting it before the parallel switch, whether or Not You buy a New Start Battery, Buy a Spare & keep it on a Automatic trickle charger or charge it once a week with a regular charger. That way You'll not only have a spare, but IF something should ever happen to the alternator You can run on the battery for a short period of time (depending upon How HIGH an AMP HR battery You get aka 1000 AMP HR +). If YOu get a Deep Cycle one, You can use it for double duty in case something else fails.

    Enjoyed the Ben Diary, I’m a stay at home dad and after a long day with my two toddler girls I can get tired and emotional too. I also once identified as a diesel mechanic, two rotations of a 4 stroke engine will activate all the valves regardless of how many cylinders it has. Keep up the good attitude, I love seeing cruisers doing it with kids since that is our goal as well. Cheers!

    You guys are amazing and especially doing this life style with two kids. Your children will certainly appreciate it later in life looking back on these videos of their loving mum and dad and the life they will lead.

    Super tough trying to do anything when you have a baby and a toddler to look after. Once they get to 5-6 years old life will be awesome as they will start to be useful around the boat and will pretty much take care of themselves.

    Check out piriformis syndrome. The piriform muscles run from the central pelvis out to the hips. The sciatic nerves run interlaced with the piriformis muscles and down to the feet. The piriformis muscles get inflamed, trapping the sciatic nerves against the pelvis. Place a tennis ball in an easy chair under your hip joint. Roll around. Do it a couple of times a day. It should improve in about a week. You can speed up the process with ice packs.

    Ben~ awesome job multi-tasking in this vid + your honesty = Rockstar! Willa was soooo cute organizing her toys towards the end of vid. If you find you need an extra hand for a bit, I'd love to join and help out however possible.
    You are my sailing/liveaboard idols! Can't wait to be doing this someday soon.

    I experienced the same when I returned to Element (currently at Yacht Haven) with regards to back/hip pains...I find it was the steps on the boat triggering it as you have not been using those muscles....go for couple of messages....it helped...
