The wreath on the door reference is lost on younger people. They don't make that connection or the reference to carrying him away.

You're so correct! I'm 67 and as a child couldn't understand why grandpa didn't want a Christmas wreath on his door. Mom explained it to me later. What a song! Peace from Northern Michigan.

She left him. He loved her until the day he died.
    Beautiful storytelling.♥

"Soon they'll carry him away" is pretty danged clear, and I just don't understand how so many people so completely misunderstand the song. She left him at the beginning, he said he'd love her till he died....he stopped loving her today....because he died. She came to the funeral. "This time he's over her for good" because he's dead. Pretty danged clear.

The key to the song is the first line "He said I'll love you till I die". She left him and he held out hope for the rest of his life that she would come back. He kept her pictures on his wall and had their old love letters by his bed. The reason he stoped loveing her is that he died. "I saw my friend today but I didn't see no tears. All dressed up to go away first time I'd seen him smile in years" His friend was not sad anymore because he died. He was dressed up in his funeral suit and the smile was put their by the under taker. "They placed a reef upon his door and soon they will carry him away" The reef is a funeral reef which is often place on the casket door and also on the door of the greiving families door. Soon the pallbearers will carry him away for his burial. His ex came to the funeral and his friend wondered if she would but he thought to himself well this time he is over her for good. This is one of the sadest songs of all time. I have noticed that a lot of reactors don't understand the whole story on the first listen. I think maybe some of the funeral references were more common in the 1970s or 1980s when this song first came out. My dad was a huge country misic fan and he used to sing this song sometimes when me and him where riding in the truck.
I am glad you reacted to this one it really is an awesome song even though it is very sad.

It was a woman he loved who left him decades ago. He never got over her while he was alive. He clung to old memories, old love letters, and to the hope she would return to him one day. He quite literally loved her until the day he died, just like the first words of the lyrics indicated. She showed up to the funeral to see him one last time.

Tammy Wynette is his X wife who George wrote this song about. He took the break up really hard. Loving someone and missing them until you die.

Nothing to do with Wynette, and Jones didn't write the song, didn't even want to record it.

No she left but he loved her till the day he died. That is why he stoped loving her today, He died. You missed it.

He died. That's the only reason he stopped loving her. Opening words, "I'll love you till the day I die".

98% of reactors completely miss the fact that he stopped loving her THE DAY THAT HE DIED! 🙄 “Soon they’ll carry him away”, is a dead giveaway, pardon the pun. 😂
