Widely considered the greatest country song of all time. Also, it came out in 1980 when George’s career had tanked (They used to call him “No Show Jones” caused he’d get trashed and miss shows) and this song brought him back to the top.
@@sharonburcham66 Exactly...he was given this song 6 YEARS earlier, he never liked it and said "Nobody is gonna' buy that morbid sob". He later was quoted as saying his career was salvaged in 3 minutes when he finally recorded HSLHT.
There's a story I heard about this song. George Jones didn't want to record this song, but his label pressured him to do it. After laying down his vocals, he supposedly said "Ain't nobody gonna buy that morbid son of a bitch." It went on to became not only his biggest hit, but one of the most beloved and recognizable songs in country music.
My favorite George Jones song is "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" and "The Grand Tour" is classic. Patsy Cline is the female OG of country music. Her song "Crazy" was written by Willie Nelson (another OG)
"Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" is a classic, and most definitely should be listened to, even if they don't record their reactions to it. It is an ode to Country music and is never going to leave my playlist.
Hey guy's there was actually music before Queen, if you remember if you're old as I am back in the late 60's-70's Creedence Clearwater revival had the song I Heard it through the grapevine which was actually a 11-minute song one version the other version they had was about 5-6 min. But yes country radio I know back in those day's didn't want a song over 3-30mins. Long
It wasn't just country radio at that time. As far as I know, it was all genres. The radio stations were concerned about losing ad time to actual music. As stupid as that sounds, it's true. And a shame. Think of all the un-trimmed Beatles, Beach Boys, and other bands of the 60s and 70s that were constrained by that stupid un-written rule. - Keith
This song was recorded in1979 and released in April 14, 1980. One of George Jones greatest songs. You need to check out the one I loved back then( The corvette song) , and the grand tour both by George Jones.
Thanks for giving credit to the actual writers of this song. Braddock and Putnam were both dynamite lyricists and they couldn't have had anyone better to record it than George Jones, who did not want to record it because he said it was so damn sad that no one would buy it. This became his biggest record EVER..
Braddock and Putnam did not consider this to be one of their best songs; they had written for both “King George” and his ex wife Tammy Wynette, “The Queen of Country Music”, both individually and as a duet. The legendary Billy Sherrill produced both George and Tammy - and he was responsible for finally convincing George, who absolutely hated the song, to record it. At this point in his life, George had become an alcoholic/addict to the point that he gained the nickname “No-Show Jones” because of his chronic habit of standing his audiences up. He hadn’t had a hit in six years, and he was at the rock bottom of his career and his life. Billy Sherrill had huge problems getting George recorded; he showed up to sessions drunk, he flubbed the lyrics, he couldn’t remember the tune, and he slurred his words. Sherrill stuck with him, finally cutting and splicing the finished song together. Even then, George to Sherrill, “Nobody will buy this morbid son of a bitch.” During one session, Tammy coincidentally came into the studio where she sat in the sound booth talking to Sherrill, who later said that the timbre of Jones’s voice changed to the melancholic tone that made it famous. When it was released, it immediately shot to #1 on the charts, and King George, who had gotten his life straightened out, was back. He said his four decade career was saved by a three minute song.
in my opinion, THIS is the epitome of a song about love's devotion, even in one-sided love. and i haven't even heard the video you made yet. i just love this song.
George and his label turned down the song when it was first offered to them. Some time later, it was offered to them again. His producers told the writers to make the song longer. That's where the talking verse came in... The greatest country song ever written.
If it's storytelling you want, start with Travis Tritt "Anymore" next is his song "Tell me I was Dreaming" and last "If I Lost You" . It's also known as "The Trilogy" and you need all three videos to hear and see the whole story, in the above order, so it's best to react to "The Trilogy"
We had this played at my daddy’s funeral . He and my mom divorced for 35 years and never stopped loving each other . It was a beautiful relationship to watch . My daddy would play it on guitar and sing it to my momma . So before he passed away he called my mom and said two songs are for you 1 I will always love you by Dolly and 2 He stopped loving her today . He told her two days before he died . Biggest mistake was leaving you Kay , and marring Linda ( stepmonster ) . My mom never dated another man loved my daddy till we buried her . Now they are both in heaven together and StepMonster is still on Earth . How’s to show ya the Good Die Young and the ugly live forever
This is a classic. George Jones has so many hits. I'm glad you guys reacted to this. I don't think you have reacted to it yet, but I suggest Seven Spanish Angels because it is a story song that is also a classic with Willy Nelson and the late Ray Charles. The live version is amazing.
@@BourbonCountryReacts Well, in that case, if you want a classic from one of the ladies of country music, You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man by Lorette Lynn. Anything by Dolly. A great story song is The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia by Reba, but I suggest the official video, because it plays out almost like a movie. Actually, a lot of Reba songs have videos that do that. But Seven Spanish Angels is just Willie and Ray Charles at a piano singing like the legends they are. And while some might argue it isn't country, Lady by Kenny Rogers is a must watch; the live version, where he sings it about ten days after it was released. It was written for him by Lionel Richie in 1980.
George Jones was in the hospital for a week before he died, never said a single word. Then suddenly he opened his eyes and said "Well hello there. I've been looking for you. My name's George Jones". Those were his last words.
This is my grandpa's favorite song. Anytime he hears it he says, "boy it's purty, but sad"... and yes, he says purty instead of pretty. LOL But this is the song he has listed to play at his funeral. He's always singing around the house. His go-to is Satin Sheets by Jeanne Pruett.
Guys, it wasn't the record producers it was the radio stations, they wanted songs of a certain length so they could program them and the commercials, so they had to keep the songs to a certain length to get airplay, until fm radio started taking off. Great reaction.

George thought the song was too sad to be a hit. George was wrong. Big time. I'd say the pedal steel at the beginning of Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart" is that iconic country steel sound. Conway has a ton of hits. Famous for his Conway "growl". "Hello Darlin' " may be his most popular. "That's My Job" hits home for a Dad.

Two Quick points, the animal on top of the Caribou Crossing Whisky is a Caribou, not a Moose. Cool creatures, definitely worth making a trip up north to hunt them in their annual migration. Secondly, it is distilled in Canada but bottled at the Buffalo Trace facility. It's not really a traditional Canadian whisky, but that isn't a bad thing. Cheers from 🇨🇦
There's a few songs before Queen that went longer than 3 minutes. Don McClain and Skynyrd come to mind. As for the Country Genre, that was controlled by Chet Adkins all through the '70's and early '80's. He's a big reason for the "Outlaw" movement.
Since I don’t have a vast bourbon collection like Dustin, I’ve started pairing these videos with my favorite cigar and a small glass of whatever is left in the liquor cabinet. The songs hit different with a good Monte Christo

I lie the lady vocalist covering the melody while George spoke the last verse. Some of my favorite George Jones songs are 'She's My Rock.' 'Golden Ring' (with Tammy Wynette) and the goofy, upbeat 'I'm a People."

Cuz he croaked...HA!! Well that is one way to put it :)
The corvette song is more of an uplifting song of George's. And who's gonna fill their shoes is a great one.

I have a bottle of every crown on the market today, and some that are no longer produced. EXCEPT the original, purple pouch crown. I hate it. So I totally agree with your penny wang comment.
I've heard a good bit about your collection, glad I'm not the only one that feels that way about the regular stuff -Dustin
For a different side of George Jones, and as a car guy,You should check out The Corvette Song. But any song from "The Possum" is great. My personal favorite is Choices

If Drinking Don't Kill Me.
For a good OG try Mac Davis, Baby don't get hooked on me. Are you going to stagger some OG songs into the lineup more or do you roll with most votes? Other than bribe songs moving to the top. Love to see some good mixture.
We currently do most votes and bribes... but maybe we need to do an OG day of the week, thoughts? -Dustin
@@BourbonCountryReacts That would be cool. I'm just afraid the OG's wouldn't get enough votes to move very many up the line. Thanks again your channel is very unique and fun to watch.
You should hear Alan Jackson sing this at George Jones funeral.
You should react to his song White lightning.

Oh good lord I remember Lawrence Welk, not at all the Led Zeppelin or AC/DC that I listened to. Quick question was that bottle full before you started? 🎵🎶🎉🎉🥃🥃
We'll never tell about that bottle :)
