Living in CO Springs, 291 comes up in conversation a lot. I've never had one that I'd even consider taking a bottle for free. Wishing them success, but "absolutely atrocious" pretty well sums it up for me as well. Cheers!
I also live in CO (northern denver) have a similar bottle right (non pick) of what you tasted. And while I've had a few bottles that were good about the better half of a decade ago, I can't get past the fact that 291 uses half barrels to age their whiskey hoping to speed up the process. Most every bottle I had tasty overly woody and slightly bitter. There is no soft wood notes and what wood notes are there blows out whatever whiskey is in the glass. Not sure if that's also a "aging at altitude thing" here in CO, but I usually don't drink CO whiskey any more because of those notes. Well done though nailing the whiskey.
I love supporting my local distilleries in Colorado but 291 is just awful, especially for the money they charge. Sampled a few bottles and was turned off by all of them. Nonetheless, the bottles are full of awards stickers, which is how I know all of them are corrupt and paid for. There’s a reason nobody else does Aspen finishes…

Return of the king!
Aspen finish is such a strange finish. 291 has some alright stuff but like amburana I’m out on aspen finish as a Coloradan
Hey Cam, have you ever been to Whiskey Thieves or have anything from them?
Nope not yet!
"Absolutely atrocious" 😂
Minnick's palate continues to be trash
Craft over legacy
I haven't heard anything good about this distillery. Especially that finish.
Love Fred Minnick...but a number of his picks are just bad. He liked Old Tub...so there you go.
Fred Minnick is a paid talking piece. Nothing more

Single sample is not something you are used to doing. More like 10+
I bought a store pick of 291. Absolute TRASH! I will never buy 291 again.
Dude how do you know what cannibus taste like???
😂
One of the worst bottles I’ve ever tasted and I’ll never forget it.
Dude how do you know what cannibus taste like??? Aspen wood stave??? Who would do such ? Aspen is super acidic and nasty smelling
