    I agree with you. I've building older kits from my child hood and like the unique challenges they offer you.

    When i started in 2014 i had a stash of Tamiya I had acquired and nothing else. I ordered a few kits on ebay to test out other companies. I got the IV H from Italeri and III J initial from Dragon. I built the Italeri first and I actually really enjoyed it. The plastic was a bit soft and details could be muddy, but they tried to add things Tamiya did not. Dragon of course was super different than I was used to and I became an instant fanboy. But I liked that Italeri IV H, I think depending on the subject it's a solid choice. Since most kits require upgrades anyway, the less you pay for the base kit the better. As long as it's dimensionally sound.

    The old Italeri M47 kit has to be one of their best, well detailed with separate molded periscope guards, and separate latches on the fender stowage boxes. I bought extra kits just for the periscope guards.

    I've been building these plastic kits since I was a kid in the early 1960's. Then I don't think they were ever intended to be accurate scale models and were aimed at children and teenagers with an interest in making stuff. With the digital world I don't think the majority of kids are bothered about making stuff so these kits have now moved on to satisfy the more discerning modeler looking for accuracy and detail. There are some amazing things coming out with 3D printing now, so the hobby moves on a notch.

    I appreciate your more relaxed approach. As you say its a hobby with many interpretations. Your approach makes model making approachable. Other channels, although superb, make it look daunting just with the back drop of paints, tools, kits etc. And thats not to say your kits are lacking in any way. They're superb.

    I was thinking of buying they Italeri Panzerjaeger 1 kit but was 'humming and harring' . Having seen what you've said I've gone and ordered myself one plus some metal tracks from Masterclub MT . I've built several Italeri kits in the past , the last one being the Stag Hound which I really enjoyed the build and the painting and weathering. Thanks for posting another wonderful video look forward to the next one.

    Great update, thanks very much, totally agree about the "different" kind of joy in building and improving old kits. And there are so many out there, if one cares to search for them. It's like a kind of a treasure hunt, and they pop up and then disappear in the most unexpected places. By the way, the 1/48 Arado by Hobby 2000 is now at 31,75 € (!!!) on the MiG Jimenez AMMO website. 1/48 Stukas too at that price :-)

    I really enjoyed your video on the kits, you have a down to earth approach to the hobby which in turn sets you aside from the others. Keep up the good work. Your weathering is very good, it takes patience and skill both of which you have. I myself need work on weathering . I can learn a lot from you . Thanks, The Baron.

    Italeri did some really great kits way back in the late 70's early 80's .. Yes they had mistakes but with a few references you could make something really nice out of them .. Hey I built the Crusader kit and with a few little fixes and some good references I took it to the AMPS USA show and actually won a gold medal in the advanced group .. So it can be done .. Only thing is lately they seem to be asking Level one prices for mediocre kits here in North America .. As for your Tamiya kit and the figures .. If you want the G buy it .. I like the idea that between the F and G kits you can switch up the crew figures and make either in Europe of the African campaign .. I was thinking of doing the F in Africa ,so I'll just switch out the G crew...

    There is never a bad kit but a lack of skill to pull them through. The only way we have to learn is through other people or by experience, the later called mistakes too. I love both new and old kits. The new one because of the level of detail and engineering and the old because it makes me practices my knowledge and to test new ones to make them justice.

    • @dusanbolek8004
      @dusanbolek8004 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would disagree with this. A customer is paying for the kit and as in any other business is entitled to receive a quality product for his money. The fact that in plastic modeling lots of issues can be fixed with skill and some extra work should not be used as an excuse for kit companies not to put enough effort in engineering and producing high quality product. We are not in sixties or seventies when this hobby was in its early years, today available molding technologies, CAD systems and available experience and know how in the field are so advanced that serious cases of bad fit or any need for heavy modification of the kit to achieve reasonable results are unacceptable and companies still producing such low quality kits have no business being on the market unless they are positioned as a low cost option.

      @I_Don_t_want_a_handle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dusanbolek8004 Damn right. Worse still, the bad kits are often in the 'beginner' level and a bad experience when starting a hobby can put people right off.

    • @whtalt92
      @whtalt92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends... Italeri's new(er) commercial truck kits are really nice, then again on the aircraft / armour side they re-issue a lot of ESCI stuff - some good, some not so good.
      If you know the subject and the provenance of the kit (scalemates helps) then it's fine.
      Prices are however on the rise throughout the industry so...

    I don't get kit snobs. Unless they are absolute howlers I'd rather spend money on more kits than expensive super detailed high quality kits. Each to their own though as you say! Not going to tell someone else how to enjoy their hobby. I've found Italeri great value and they often do a kit you can't find in other manufacturers. For instance I built their Carro Armato M14/41. Comes with 5 excellent figures from Masterbox too so you're ready for a little diorama. Will have to check out Hobby2000 too now!

      @@ChampionScaleModelling I just grabbed Tamiya's Carro Armato on eBay, noticed a few of them going for around £20. Quite a bargain considering it contains a metal barrel and a small bit of PE as standard! Looks a good kit from the box.

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The internet has brought a lot of judgementality to plastic modelling. Not all who like detail are snobs though, and I say that without counting myself as among the excessive detail obsessed, particularly about internal stuff minuscule and unfriendly to older fingers and eyes which slows down the build exponentially and yet in the completed model is most frequently completely hidden or predominantly obscured. I do like surface detail, scale, proportion and line accuracy though. But I get those who want it all along with those who are happy with the meat 'n taters kits. For those wanting a build with all the goodies, IME it's usually the cheaper route to just to go with the more expensive kit option in the first place than buy the basic box and accessorise later.

    Considering that this is a 1976 tooling with parts added on over the years, it is an amazing kit. I've built a number of Italeri kits over the years, and not one of them was what I would call "bad", certainly nowhere near as bad as the AMT Shelby GT-500 I have half-completed!

    Italeri panzer 1 B in 1/35 scale was such a nice model, it was my 6th (?) model and 2 years later, I still am happy with it. Cannot find it anywhere in Turkey anymore sadly, I'd love to build another one. I suppose I'll get the panzerjäger, it still has parts for the panzer 1, turret and all. Sadly I don't think you can build a panzer 1 from it, the hull seems to be modified.

    Italeri for me have always been a great source of kits the bigger companies didn't/wouldn't make. Kits like the RSO with Pak40 and I believe that Italeri are still the only ones that have produced that kit. Sure the details can be a bit hit and miss, but nothing some modelling skills, time and scratch building can't remedy or AM parts if you want to splurge a bit more cash on their models.

      Age 7 is a good age to start the hobby, as I did like yourself.
      But realize that with the exception of their P-61 Black Widow, the old Revell and Monogram kits that put the older Aurora and Lindberg kits to shame were available in mom and pop stores years before Tamiya was in the business of static scale model plastic kits and long before you were out of your diapers.
      But still, they still provide a very cost effective platform for various after-market cockpit, wheel-well, and engine details. And being in standard scales, your options are wide-open when it comes to after-market decals.
      Now if you have the balls, and you want truly finely detailed kits, try the Trumpeter or GWH in 1/32 scale as I have. But except for the F4F Wildcat, since they are molded out of soft plastic, don't forget to buy the after-market metal landing gears.

    How much is the Hobby 2000 repop of the 1/48 Ju 87D-3 in the UK? They've arrived in AU, but I was gobsmacked (unimpressed) at the local price here given what they are. We can buy latest release 1/48 Eduard Profipacks for significantly less, and even an Eduard Limited Edition like the 1/48 Adlertag Bf 110C or D with resin, colour PE, masks and 12 marking option decals inc. extensive stencils for around the same price. Unsure if our local single line import (?) distro price gouging or the street price is similarly ridiculous in the UK.

    Most Italeri kits are excellent, but the decals included with them suck big time: they either never come off the decal sheet or they disintegrate as they come off the decal sheet.

    • @rodneypayne4827
      @rodneypayne4827 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not recently, the decals are Cartograph printed. If you have any trouble with decals get some Testors decal bonder, it's easy to use being a spray can. One thin coat straight onto the sheet before use. Once fully dry,trim the decals close and apply as normal. Also works with older brittle sheets( more than one coat is needed) because it replaces the original ink sealant clear coating. Also use decal softener and or setter(I personally use Tamiya Mark Fit and Mr Hobby- Mister Mark Setter
      Mr Mark Softer) they will adhere better and mould into panel lines for the painted on look. Be careful though some decals react badly ( ink running, chemical reaction with the original bonder), trial and error is needed.
