    Hi, Gary . I have been away for a while , but now catching up with your videos . This looks like a nice kit . Back in the early 1970's , a friend had an Airfix Harrier GR 1 . Pretty sure it was 1/24 scale . ( ? ) . In my time away , someone gave me a half built , half painted Vulcan , that makes four now . ( Not sure what air force scheme they were after ; A bright yellow ,Blue steel Missile , and sky blue wings . ) Hoping to paint it in anti flash white , Just got to find the right shade , I shall check out your Vulcan build . Kind regards as always .

      Hi Tony, welcome back! Yes the Harrier was done in 1/24, in fact they've just re-released it. Not doing it myself... Best of luck with the Vulcan! Cheers, Gary

    From the late eighties Hasegawa had a tendency to separate the aircraft kits from the weapons so kits would have few if any stores and there were separate weapon kits that you could buy to load up as you please.

    • @garys_stuff

    Hmm! Looking forward to seeing you work your magic on this one, Gary!
    The Harrier is one of my favourite aircraft. I was gutted (along with many others) when they were scrubbed from RAF / RN service by PM David Cameron.
    They were combat-proven and highly versatile aircraft despite the high pilot workload.
    Your 800NAS model will be, I’m sure, a fitting tribute to the types service.
    No pressure, then! 😂
    Best wishes from Wirral.

      Yeah, cheers mate. Like the day that Airfix told me that there design team all watched my Buccaneer videos. No pressure! Have you read "Joint Force Harrier" by Ade Orchard (sorry, Cdr Adrian Orchard, RN)? Brilliant book about operating Harriers in Afghanistan.

    Nice out of the box review Gary and looking forward to the build! I see the plastic is unchanged since Hasegawa first produced it.
    The canopy seam is a sign of the limitations of mould technology in trying to reproduce the "bubble" effect of the canopy. This was before "slide-mould" technology was available. Relatively easy to remove with careful sanding and polishing, four-way nail polishing pads are good for this.
    Currently working on the CMK T.12 conversion for this kit but fitting the two part vacform canopy is giving me, er, "fits"!

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry to say this but you put a GR9 Harrier next to the F-35 the harrier wins hands down ,one engine and it looks mean and ready to do some damage as for the F-35 that aircraft looks like it would fold up under the strain,no, it’s the Harrier for me all the time ,shame BAe didn’t go on to do a GR10 imagine that ,
    Great video looking forward to seeing it built

      For my money, an improved late Harrier (like the ones in Spain) and F-35Cs on a "cat and trap" QE2 class carrier was the way forward. The F-35B suffers too much in terms of range and weapons load by being VSTOL, let alone reliability and serviceability at sea.

    Just went down a few rabbit holes looking for more info. Did manage to get it on my wishlist on Scalemates 👍.
    Ahem.. £30 ?? Are you kidding me? Wowsers. ($35 to us) really decent price for what I've seen so far. Revell earlier version mentioned was $40 in local shop that I'm glad I avoided (been sitting there for a while by the looks too) and thought that was overpriced, for a usually crappy flash filled mess. Now knowing it was probably an older Hasegawa kit still wouldn't buy it.
    Looking forward to seeing how this comes out. ☕🐢

    I can't remember seeing such a polished kit -- primer with some bite will be required. That canopy seam is disturbing -- it can be rectified on the outside but very difficult if on the inside..
    I saw the Sidewinders and cannon pods -- are those all the weapons provided?
    Iconic aircraft -- looking forward to the build!

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know, very shiny! The Sidewinders and guns are the only weapons - which is a pity because finding Paveway IVs in 1/48 is tricky (I think L'Arsenal do them) and no-one does the CRV-7 rocket pod in 1/48. Also, the gun pods are not very well modelled.

      I remember being allowed to borrow a HP turbine blade from BA for photo shoot once - off an RB.211-524 - but I had to give it back that day as the scrap value was $10,000! The design of the innards of modern jets is truly incredible.

    as far as I'm aware the canopy seams are not there on the real thing(think there was an issues with the canopy cracking around the fasteners)- Yep I built the real 1 to 1 scale ones at Kingston and Dunsfold Aerodrome, both closed (politics) and the powers that be moved the production up North (couldn't build or maintain them, as they lost the skills sadly - the harrier's death knell in UK service so to speak)

In essence the whole thing of the plastic moulding plus the box printing and the packing (by hand) is far cheaper overseas - in India to be precise. The decals are Cartograf these days, printed in Italy, but the research and design is done entirely in the UK. The production tools (moulds) are made in China. I'll see what I can do...

    Seams: Does glue stick to / mix with filler? I'm wondering if it's possible to mix filler and glue, spread the mix between two halves, like those nozzles, then when it's dry carefully sand off excess filler? Would that make the seam invisible?

    • @garys_stuff

      @@garys_stuff you can sand it off but that’s the easy part, you have to ensure that the piece is well supported as clear parts tend to be brittle, once supported just use ever finer grit and a nail polisher from the make up aisle for the finish (if you don’t have a special Set) a dip in Klear ties it all back together. Some people suggest dipping transparencies in klear anyway regardless of whether they need sanding or not.

    Agreed the cockpit decals look a bit bland. May I suggest for the cockpit instrumentation, when you get around to making this kit, using a sharp knife cutting the black centres out of the screens, and you can then carefully paint the gaps in pale green as if they're on. [Edit: GMTA you mentioned painting the screens green :) ]
    Do any kits have decals for the canopy HUD in front of the pilot, and/or the explosive strips to shatter the canopy in an ejection?

    • @garys_stuff

      This kit comes with decals for the MDC on the canopy. I'll probably cut the decals up for the instruments and only use the ones I really need, then rely on dry brushing and spots of colour for the rest.
