I'm curious... what makes you think that having a crew requires also having a base? If the crew are simply in the hatches as if the tank is driving along, they're not interacting with the ground directly. The crew can simply be in the hatches for a sense of scale with the vehicle; a diorama or simple base is not required in my opinion :)
Also, I think you're tropentarn looks perfect here. The use of tropical camouflage on the eastern front is always interesting to me, and it's awesome to see you taking an interest in that too!
You can do a Pz IV G in Tropentarn 2 camouflage if you don't want it to look exactly the same. The camouflages are quite different. I can send you some pics on FB if you want.

Thanks, it's mainly based around exhibiting and the club so I'm trying to push myself to add a base more often, I did take a long time looking at various ideas surrounding the Troppen 1 & 2 colours and landed on MRP being very much in the ball park, not surprising as Bruce found the same with Dunkelgrau. I'd be very interested in seeing the pics, I think we're friends on FB, that PZ IV G is very tempting....
      Cheers for dropping by

Great! Just what I needed some philosophy around the hobby. Glad to know I’m not the only one who suffers from option anxiety at times. Keep up the good work!

I don’t know what it says about me (lazy I guess), but I have about 10 projects that are ‘ about an hour away from being finished’. I also don’t really like the weathering process, mainly because it takes a steady hand, and I have enough trouble actually building the models. Unfortunately, at nearly 70 years young, a steady hand is something way back in my past. However, I do try and persevere with the fine work, and I get a real sense of achievement when I have a model that has all the tiny parts glued in place where they are supposed to be.
I really enjoy the building and painting process however, and I guess that is why I have so many unfinished models sitting on the shelf and mocking me every time I walk passed them. Your discussion has inspired me to ‘lift my game’ and just get on with it. Thanks and greetings from Australia!

Well, great looking build, brother. You're on track to move forward. . Do not let the rivet counters drive your builds. I have thousands of photos to get what I'm looking for. I could show you 10 tanks that froze on, and I just keep going back and forth. More stuff or new ideas are mojo killers. Looking forward to your next post on it.

Ostkettten are actually a different larger type of track, as are Winterketten. Those holes are for adding a type of traction device called a Hammerstollen. Other types of German armor used different types of cleats such as Mittelstollen and Gabelstollen, which attached to the track links in different ways. I got this info from the book "Panzerketten: Die Gleisketten der deutschen Kettenfahrzeuge des Zweiten Weltkrieges" by Peter Schwarzmann. it is my go to reference for designing tracks for my 3D printing business on ebay. If you want to discuss this in more detail let me know.
As to the issues of stumbling blocks, well, I have a Panzer 38T ready for weathering and a really cool base midway done, an A7V built and weathered and am working on the base and figures, an M4 Sherman mostly done with some work on figures and base, a BF109E primed, a highly scratch built improved P51 Mustang that is partially painted, and a Junkers JU 87 'Stuka' on a base with about 5 figures done, and two wooden ships 'started'. The fight is real, at some point I will get the inspiration to finish them, but for now I just started on a B52 Steam Locomotive. Motivation is a flighty mistress sometimes brother! ; ]
    Ohhhhhhh, look; a 1/32nd scale F14 Tomcat!!!

The notification for this video came through yesterday but I've only just had chance to watch it over breakfast - I've had a Wingman models 1/48 Kfir I bought and started just after Telford 2019 and which has been on and off the bench since - like you said, it's now one of those 'hour away' kits! I was determined to finish it next and your video has really given me the impetus to do so! Right, I'm off to the modelling room....thanks!! 🙂

The panzer 4 F is the kit I bought my son to introduce him to the hobby last year. I built the G at the same time and we worked along together. Mine is paused as well as I learn how to do new things, it’s painted and fully assembled but I am learning to weather. His is in a finished state for a young guy learning the hobby. We all have a project or two with 10% to go, but the last 10% takes as much time or more than the first 90%.

Brand new to the hobby. Your description of the process reminds me of Peter Jackson who used the line films are never finished, they escape. Regardless, thank you so much. I’m having so much fun in this new to me hobby and I’ve learnt so much from you. I love watching your videos - they teach me and help scratch the model itch when I can’t get to my bench.

I think it looks great. Grab a small location you believe needed to be finished up and it will push you through till the end. That’s how I’ve found works for me. 👍

I love watching nightshift videos, the stuff he does looks amazing but honestly I prefer your videos. Very honest, very much if you make a mistake its fine and I find that encourages me to go back to my old models. Also they too look fantastic! Please keep up the good work!

I got the same problem, I think all us modelers do. I have some nice kits just staying in my stash. I am afraid of messing up, we all are and we all do mess up. These pro guys like on youtube mess up too, its just that their failiures are not published. Athleast not the channels I watch.

I have got a few shelf queens, and I have stalled on these because I was not certain of what to do next, plus I have to rediscover my lost mojo, I find nothing wrong with putting kits on a base, even just for the ease of handling, take care and keep safe, you have another subscrber, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia.

You should do a figure painting tutorial with those nice molds! It would be such a help to watch. I find figure painting to be probably the most challenging thing about armour modelling.

  • @stevecampbell6454

Thanks for a thoughtful look at a part of scale modeling that few people really talk about i.e. when am I satisfied with this kit? You are not alone in this, I have a 1/32 Tamiya F4Ud Corsair that I started a year ago and have just gotten to the point of putting the final flat coat on it. I stalled at the start of weathering for months, the dark blue paint is a new weathering challenge for me and it took time and research to come up with a look that I find authentic and realistic for this airplane. But I still seem to be unable to get on with it as I am frankly scared to screw it all up at this point.
On to the other topic you brought up, I have had to stop competing in my building with all those master builders who seem to be able to work miracles with every kit. I have started building some kits fully detailed, and other ones at various levels of weathering. Honestly, if I did them all to the level of this tank you are showing I would not be able to get to all the kits I want to build. I have started making weathering decisions based on how much background information I can get about a specific item, and if it can be built to accurately represent a historical subject. If so, then I make an effort to make it as realistic as I can. On a kit that I cannot find that data, I will ease back and make a slightly used or museum restoration out of it and move on. However, this does not always satisfy my need to "keep up with the Joneses or Rinaldi's" and I am often tempted to add just one step or level more to make my latest work even better (this is the case with your tank, I am working on a old Revell reissue armor kit and am right at the pin wash step, and I suck at it).
In the end all we have to do is satisfy ourselves which seems to be hard to do; few if any people will ever see my triple shaded, hand made throttle handle inside the cockpit of my Corsair but I will feel good that I did the work because I enjoy doing it.
Did you make any videos about your pin wash work on this kit? I would be interested to improve my skills at this. Nice work, by the way, and many thanks for speaking out about this.

Drilling out the tracks was mental commitment. Must be a masochist at heart. Also, paint the figures already mate. Don't need a base just because you have figures. I just like getting kits finished and starting something new. Rarely push the boat out and spend a ton of hours on one model so I don't get bogged down "waiting". But I'm not entering competitions or anything!

Jason do you have an opinion about substituting machined metal barrels for the plastic?
To me the main gun barrel and MG is what the tank is all about, the ones in the kits seem underwhelming.

What do others do about decals , where I'm trying to do kits around my Dads regiment - RA of the 43 Wessex ..but that means I need 1/35 44 decals BUT the STAR sheets "3rd Infantry" only gives me two !..then I messed up one..so that was £8 for literally ONE... the 43rd Fighting Wyverns STAR sheet at least gives the wyvern but NO 44.....£8 for two decals is untenable ....any advice to this newby..?

I really don't see the need for a base either. I quite like painting figures and always have one or two in every AFV build to show the scale. And Tamiya's new figures are too good to leave out. But I've never thought 'better do a base too'. That's a completely separate ball game to me.

you should watch some videos about 'dungeon crafting'.
it's making terrain for games like D&D, which is 28mm scale (about 1:60 i think) and has a
strong focus on styrofoam. there's a lot of techniques and tricks you can learn from there...
