    Thanks for mentioning Thanksgiving in North America, it’s actually a bigger holiday than Christmas, because all cultures and religions participate. More people travel for it than at any other time of the year. We’re not mixing households and generations this year, I’m getting together with only my 90-year old father and his wife, who have been in my single family bubble since the beginning of the pandemic. Everything got dropped this year, my father’s 90th, my 60th, my nieces graduation, Easter, etc. If we skip this year, our family will be intact for next year and years to come, with excellent precautions and good luck.

      Thanksgiving in Canada is in mid October and is more low key than in the US. However, here in Canada we have experienced a significant upswing in new cases beginning about that time. Family gatherings are the root causes of the majority of new outbreaks. So if you are in the US, please take the warnings seriously. Thanksgiving as you normally celebrate it will be a major risk.

    • @kevinbyrne4538
      @kevinbyrne4538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Dawn taylor -- Thanksgiving began as a harvest feast: people gave thanks to God for His bounty. However, it wasn't an official holiday. For decades Sarah Hale advocated that Thanksgiving be made an official holiday. After the Battle of Gettysburg (a pivotal battle in America's Civil War), then president Lincoln celebrated the occasion with a presidential proclamation declaring November 26, 1863 as a day of thanksgiving. The holiday has been celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November ever since then. Extended families gather to celebrate the holiday: relatives will travel long distances just to attend these annual family reunions. The holiday is non-denominational: it's celebrated by all faiths -- and even by atheists -- as a family get-together. Typically an enormous variety of special dishes are prepared for the feast, so everyone ends up absolutely stuffed by the end of the meal.

      @@daverok1113 "corona virus is like having a bad flu." A bad flu could mean getting pneumonia or death. You have medications you can take if you get infected with the flu virus-eg. Tamiflu. However, there are no medication avaliable for corona virus! All they can do for you is hook you up to some fluids, try to prevent secondary infection and hope you survive.
      Flu usually goes away after 10days. However, there are people who have corona for up to 3months! Corona virus and influenza are two completely different monsters. They are not of the same family or species. That virology need to have several seats.

      @Alexander Van Burk studies are still being carried out on drugs that may help the patient. There are no conclusions on any drug or supplements yet. However, without any doubt, Tamiflu is proven to be effective against influenza.
      Influenza is way more manageable than covid. Corona is novel, so we are still learning about it. Plus, based on my experience with both, influenza is more predictable than covid.....by far! The progession of covid can take you through a Rollercoaster. We also have covid long haulers to think about-they struggle with symptoms for months.
      Covid can affect your respiratory, nervous, as well as the digestive system. On the other hand, the flu typically affects the upper and lower respiratory system. These viruses are very different. Its dangerous and unprofessional to assume that they are one in the same. for instance, my husband recovered from covid about a month ago and he still tested positive for viral RNA. We don't see this with influenza.
      Side note: I am more into studying bacteria but this virus has caught my interest.

Biden has already done the Trump thing really , up to the states and don't really care , but will put a national unenforceable mask mandate. The only advantage of Biden is he is less likely to outright attack governors for doing what you asked of them which deal with the problem as they see fit. It is obvious that a lockdown, or even something like closing schools, would make a big difference. I think he will wait until there is a massive outcry. Last night the toilet paper isles at two grocery stores were completely empty. Obviously people are aware of the situation, and for some strange reason this is how they react. At this point, churches are still meeting, very large ones, too - no social distancing or mask wearing at some. Unfortunately there are a number of activists who will protest in the streets unless we see many dead and overwhelmed hospitals. Will we ever learn?

      Yes you are right. They were being used at airports somewhere and were far better at detecting the Covid virus. The other thing I am very interested to know about is whether people that own cats or dogs have more immunity from catching Covud-19. Dr. John mentioned this sometime ago as cats and dogs get Corona viruses and a few have had Covid-19 but they do not pass it on to humans. Dr John thought it would be good if someone was to produce this data.it would not be very difficult to find out how many people were cat or dog owners. Having a cat myself obviously it made me more interested as I was wondering whether my beautiful half Bengal cat Ralphie might be helping me out!?

Lockdowns only slow the spread. Better to lessen the full on manifestation of the illness such that the disease is minor and short or not at all evident. Lockdowns only spread the incidence of 'long hauler' over time, it doesn't prevent them. Remember as well the vaccine will have their own 'long hauler' adverse effect on some in the population. As an expat Kiwi residing in CA (I've lived here for 15 years), I do not see the population here following CDC public health guidance regarding Thanksgiving. Let's be clear: culturally, Thanksgiving is a much bigger deal than Christmas, by far. There is a core of the US culture, for whom you just simply cannot tell people what to do. My rural community here is already failing to follow local guidance re masks, social distancing, gatherings and travel. Those same folks voluntarily setting aside their turkey dinner and mass family gatherings is just not going to happen, imo.
