Out With The Old In With the Newish, My Trans Journey. FJ60 Engine Into The FJ40

  • Time to get the FB marketplace motor ready to install. That means taking off the smog trash (1972 FJ40 doesn't need it here in CA) and making sure everything is up to snuff. I'll be swapping parts over from my old 2F which is a painstaking boring process. So we filmed some of it. Also, I have been running Dewalt big tools for a while now and want to switch to Milwaukee M18... it is not an easy process. Or cheap.

    You should use Steel-it spray paint on those brackets. It’s not cheap but it’s almost as durable as powder coating. I used rustoleum for years but it wasn’t very durable so I switched to Steel-it. It’s also weld though so that’s really nice.

      I have a can, I need more! But it’s pricey man, which in the paint world usually means it’s worth it.

    I moved to Milwaukee a few years ago after being loyal to DeWalt for a good 20 years or so, it seems that DeWalt has lost interest in the automotive industry all together, and on the other hand Milwaukee kept coming with so innovative tools every now and then.

      I just wasn’t feeling like rebuilding the 78’ after I found the quality 84’ 2F. There was enough updates to that motor I felt like I’d be better off running it as it is, even rebuilding the 84’ motor instead of the 78’. But, my logic is usually trash.

    Did you do the galley plug while on the stand?

  • @blakeley98
    @blakeley98 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The reason that when you put the pipe plug in place of the vsv felt like the wrong thread is because Toyota uses British Standard Pipe Thread not National Pipe Thread. British Pipe Thread is not tapered like National Pipe Thread. What you did will work fine

    I swapped in a newer 2F into my 40 as well. Worked out well for me. I ditched the oil cooler though, it is really just a bit more oil capacity and doesn't really cool much.

    • @projectwrongway9127
      @projectwrongway9127  ปีที่แล้ว

      Any tips? The cooler seems to be intact so I figure what the hell.

      @@projectwrongway9127 when I did my swap I took most of the newer 2F accessories off the block and replaced them with my '76 era parts from my original engine. I did have to keep the newer fuel pump though, apparently the older pumps won't work with the newer camshaft. Thermostat housing, water pump, intake, distributor, motor mounts and oil filter mount all bolted on with no issues plus the newer engine has the spot for the power steering pump so I did that conversion as well using 60 series parts. I use an extra capacity oil filter to get a little more oil in the 2F but haven't had any issues with eliminating the oil cooler itself, it gets rid of a couple hoses that can potentially leak and simplifies the engine bay in my opinion. Good luck!
