    My great uncle had one years ago, he lost it in a poker game. To be fair he did win a house in a game before he lost the Rolex. So he came out fine. I know his son wishes he had it. He talks about that watch every time I see him since I am into watches. I’ll show him this and tell him about the code. I am going to send this to him now. Nice looking watch. I might pick me one up.

    I really enjoy this watch, simple because it’s so inexpensive & high quality.
    This is a sport/diving watch I actually feel comfortable wearing when doing such activities.
    Never really made sense to me to risk damaging a high priced or rare watch when doing sailing or something like that.
    I dinged mine up quite abit, the weathering really adds to the vintage/retro charm.

      well I have bought lots of stuff from Ali and most reputable sellers you have to pay the VAT upfront which okay is the additional cost but you at least then dont get walloped on arrival with handling charges and vat which you would here in the UK.

    Did you try the watch face up with the crown against the metal piece of the timer? Sometimes that helps reducing the noise. The beat sometimes travels better trough the crown instead of the case.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not but to me the issue is balance, fork or escape. To strip all out would basically mean a full stripdown which I cant be bothered to do right now if I am honest as its keeping good enough time. I will eventually get to the bottom of it though. Thanks for watching.

      My favourite Aliexpress watch is my sterile Bliger NTTD "broad arrow", I have since bought from ebay a retro heavy leather brown strap which has on the keeper a broad arrow stamped into it and it sets off the whole watch a treat. Zuludiver 2 piece Zulu in the dark brown with silver rings looks very cool on the NTTD too.

    • @dodgydruid
      @dodgydruid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Google is your friend, all you have to do is search for example NH35 bph and top of the list is Calibre Corner which give all the technical running details of the Seiko NH35 movement which if your timegrapher doesn't pick up automatically, you can input your lift angle of 53 degrees and your BPH at 21600 and the machine will do the rest.

    Very impressive. I'm currently eyeing the version with simpler pencil hands, which takes inspiration directly from the earliest Rolex Submariner. Question, do you think that San Marin can be classed as a microbrand?

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, they recently sent me the new bronze version of this which is cool although you have to like bronze because it will tarnish .
      They have a new version of this too with applied markers now rather than the painted as in this video. Having not seen that one I can’t say if it’s any better. I’d class then as a micro brand. Don’t think they sell in super large numbers. I suspect all the cases and bracelet and dials to be make by subcontractors / machine shops and they just assemble and inspect.
      I personally have had no problems with this brand service but then as a reviewer I guess I wouldn’t

      Sadly not yet, it was finding the time to strip it down as in reality I would need to do the balance, fork and the escape wheel as this is where the problem lies. To get the escape out as you may know means almost a full strip down on both sides of the movement.

    Those end links look like my Parnis ones and look a bit ill fitting to my eye. I bought a Tacto from Aliexpress and the factory ground the end links fitted to the case giving an almost seamless fit and not sure why for the money this isn't happening here. My Parnis has also a 1mm drop between the level of the endlink and the case lug and it is mega irritating as it looks janky on the wrist sadly.

    This is an excellent video high quality one of the best reviews i have seen!
    I am like you and think the same about those nh35's, ne15's. They are not clean as they should be and the oil on jewels, jewels end caps are not even infact some have barely none at all. I like to buy ne15's clean and relubricate then regulate and put them in my projects. Once done they are very accurate day to day bit can be hard regulating them to get them where you want them.
    I think the pt5000 option is better, this is a better movement than the nh35 and easier to regulate and more accurate deviation in horizontal / vertical positions than the nh35. The seagull 2824 clone is i think slightly better than the pt5000 with incabloc shock and better mainspring configuration that doesnt get really tight when near full manual winding.
    I like the bracelet and like those screws ! But i wish they had a locking clasp! Cheers!

    I have an early version of this one and I love it. San Martin sell female enlinks to match this case and strap so I updated them.
    I'd have liked them to offer a movement upgrade like they do on some of their other models. It's a shame yours was so badly out. I'm sure they claim to regulate all their movements in some of their behind the scenes TH-cam videos. This one may have slipped through the net.
    I may be in the minority, but a date version would be great too!

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They saw this video last week and did tell me they regulate the watches before dispatch and it may have been caused in transit however I can almost guarantee the beat error is not caused by transport handling. you have to move the stud in order to do that and that would be one hell of a whack. Even with all the error its still in theory to Seiko spec though.

    For anybody researching this watch wanting to buy it and use it on the original strap: don't.
    I bought it in the aliexpress anniversary sale from the official store. 2 of the 4 screws I tried to undo, literally didn't open. The tools they provide, are just bad quality and damage the screws to the point you will never get them to turn again. I sent them a message, which they just replied to with a TH-cam video that told me to use tools no regular customer has or to heat up my watch a bit. After that, they just started ignoring my messages. But at least they are still sending me messages to buy more watches while the sale is still going on.
    The watch itself is nice (although slightly misaligned), but at this point I'm so frustrated I dumped the watch in a drawer and I am turned off from buying an aliexpress watch ever again.
    All the reviews were so positive, some even got the female end links, they got a signed warranty card, ... The reality however is that if you are not a reviewer, you don't get the nice treatment.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did point out in some detail how the bracelet link screws are a nightmare and how best to go about it. Mainly not to use the drivers they sent but use your own that are much bigger. Also tape up the screw heads to avoid slipping and scratching .
      It was a pain to do but it worked out okay for me. I removed 3 links and then changed the male to female end links.

    • @somfortiwan
      @somfortiwan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyRetroWatches I have very small wrists, so I need to remove 5 so I can't be very picky about which one I want to keep in.
      I only found you review after I already bought it. Yours at least is honest about it.
      The end links ones just loosened up very fast (I tried later because I thought I was doing something wrong and I was planning to get the female end links as well) , 2 essential ones don't move at all. Of the first 3 I removed, I tried to remove the middle one just to find a better method and it's also stuck,so that makes 3 screws that I'm sure will never move.
      Again, if the reviews hadn't been this good, I wouldn't have cared this much. But the reviews were about perfect across the board, only good things about the watch and San Martin. But their customer support just does not exist unless they can fix your problem with a cheap strap or if you have a TH-cam channel.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@somfortiwan obviously I can’t speak for customer service and I have no loyalty to any brand as I mainly do vintage watch repair . I was offered to do some reviews and I thought it would be different and enjoyable.
      Like anything in watchmaking the right tool wins. You learn fast in this hobby to use the right size screwdriver for each screw. For this bracelet the bigger the better as it gives you more purchase to turn the screws in opposite directions.
      That being said I found it annoying and tricky and I have experience!
      Sorry it didn’t work out for you. I find it a nice watch for the money although I’m now not much of a fan of the NH35

    • @somfortiwan
      @somfortiwan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to be clear, I don't blame you, yours is the most honest review of the watch I've seen (and I think I saw every review on TH-cam before I pulled the trigger).
      At this price it's ok to disappear in a drawer, it's just so frustrating. I have bought 15+ watches in the last 2 years, just to experiment with sizes and styles. The San Martin was the first watch non-Seiko I bought with the idea: it's universally loved, it's quality materials (for 200 dollar of course), I love the look, the bracelet is above average, all my nh35s have been good to me and the size is perfect.
      But at this moment my pride and frustration have really turned me off from wanting to buy any watch from Aliexpress again. Maybe in a couple of days or weeks I'll think differently, but for now it's a done for me.

    San Martin, Merkur, Proxima, Cronos, Hemidallr, Blatany, Tactical Frog, Octopus, Addies, Hruodland, Rdunae, Ironwatch and Steeldive all are produced at the same Chinese factory and all use the same Seiko NH35, NH36. There is no difference but the hommage style copied and of course the price range. Instead of throwing away $200 to $400 dollars on what you may think San Martin being better than Steeldive don't be self fooled. Each brand name are exactly alike, a $90 dollar Steeldive is exactly what a $330 dollar San Martin is, don't waste your money. Also if you didn't know it you had better love the watch you buy, because you will loss 75% of the cost when you purchased it, if you ever try to sell it. Guys stick to the well established watchmakers Luminox, Seiko, Citizens, Casio, G-Shock, Orient, Knot etc. each increases in value over time!

      @MyRetroWatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is all a very fair point, my thoughts have been that the casework is made by factories with CNCs who are then selling the cases onto the brands. I know you can buy lume pips , hands and index pretty much from a catalog too. Still some of these watches are surprising me on the quality for the money. Seiko are cracking up their prices and not really offering anything new, the 4R movement is just another 7S variant in my opinion which is a real shame. I think at the £200 price tag no one is really thinking of value later down the line. At this point the owner wears until they get bored or it breaks and then its discarded.
      Probably why I have bought 100s of 70s & 80s Seikos over the years for £20.00 a go.

      This is the most honest review about the watch I've seen (and I've seen a lot of them).
      If i would have seen it before I bought it, I probably wouldn't have even bought it (because all issues I have with mine, were mentioned here extensively).
      What bothers me more is that brands like San Martin are clearly giving reviewers preferential treatments (I didn't get loctite, I got locked screws, some other reviewers got the female end links pre installed). You can't blame this reviewer for honestly reviewing the watch they have in hands, which for 200 dollar is objectively a great deal (great case material, good crystal, historically a dependable movement, decent lume, ...).
