Now this is what a true homage looks like: evoking the style and feel of a reference that you simply couldn't get your hands on - unless you traded in your mother's kidney at a Philipps auction. And even then you wouldn't really wear the delicate original on a day to day basis, would you?

    • @rawhides
      @rawhides 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I know it's not a Phillips-level watch, but I do daily wear a "Pre-Seamaster/Speedmaster" Omega 321 chronograph. Obviously I am a little bit careful and aware of the watch, but with normal daily use, it has been holding up very well, especially for a nearly 70 year old chrono.
The 321 is a tank while being a beautiful movement. Lots of people don't like to wear their vintage pieces, which I don't necessarily even disagree with, but in my case, I found this watch at an estate sale of a retired civil engineering for a killer price; as a civil engineer myself it is a lot of fun to daily wear a watch that has been in constant use for a loooooong time by another fellow engineer.
It does need to go in for a service, but I'm terrified of sending it across the pond to Bienne. The thought of the post losing it freaks me out, and it's hard to find a local watchmaker who will service a 321 for any type of reasonable price. Parts are hard to find and many times have to be cannibalized from other movements, and of course, chronographs, in general, are hard to work on.

It's worth noting that the early 50's Sub that the Invicta is homaging (pencil hands, lollipop on the very tip of the seconds hand) is a different watch to the late 50's "Bond" Sub this one is a homage to (mercedes handset, counterbalanced seconds hand, etc).
I think it would make more sense to nickname this the "57" since that's the vintage of the Bond Sub.

But I only paid like $190 with the coupons so I can live with it I guess. There is an issue with micro-adjust (rivets prevent from using half of the holes), but SM is nice enough to send replacement end links, just contact them via aliexpress messages if you have the same issue. This beautiful SN004 watch is very well built and comfortable to wear. I bought two of those using the dial customization service. For the first one the result was excellent. Unfortunately for the second one the lettering was incorrectly printed (significant lack of definition of printing compared to the first order). The case was referred to customer service and their response was: "I’m sorry, it does not have any quality problems. Different printing batches will certainly have different effects." In other words, the quality is not constant and its possible degradation is absolutely normal according to them and cannot be considered as a defect. In conclusion: I do not recommend the customization service and I am sorry to say that, based on this bad experience, if there happens a problem with a San Martin product I’m afraid there are strong probabilities that they will be of bad faith and not to assume the problem and solve it. You have been warned. I didn’t really expect such a behavior from San Martin.
Update. The fear about the warranty was justified:
One of the watches I bought is not waterproof anymore. The strangest thing is that I never wore it in my swimming pool, just washed my hands with it on the wrist. Well, disappointing for a 200 meter waterproof watch! Needles to say that the crown had always been fully screwed in. I contacted San Martin and returned the watch: they don't recognize any default! They said: " You are responsible of mishandling the watch, you have to buy a new watch". So be warned that San Martin warranty is only words and you'll lose all the money you paid for the watch and the freight to return it in case of problems. Such a pitty for such a lovely watch.

There are others out there that are also really amazing (Steinhart Ocean One Vintage, for example), but it's hard to top this one at the price point. Even the logo is really nice, and I generally don't care for the San Martin logos. For the full effect, this one deserves to be worn on a (slightly undersized!) Bond one piece nylon strap. I have a San Martin 6105 Willard Homage, and it is a fantastic watch. They copied an old Seiko and made it better than a new Seiko. I also have a San Martin bronze pilot with a green unmarked dial, one of my favorite watches. San Martin always goes and above and beyond in the quality of their watches for the price.

"lume could be better" does not sound good. I was thinking of getting one in the current sale but bad lume is a deal breaker for me. I think I'll stick with my Steeldive "Sub no date" then which has excellent lume. IMHO Steeldive and Addiesdive are much better bang for the buck than San Martin. I have 2 San Martin and they are really not that impressive. Weak lume and one arrived with the back screwed on so tight that the movement actually stopped. Highly overrated brand.

Good review - I am seriously thinking about this model; having had/sold a 1953 Rolex Turb-O-Graph - which I lovd the look and size... just can't wear a 70 year old, tens-of-thousands of dollar watch in everyday conditions. This just may satisfy the desire for the style.

Bought it on the 11/11 sale and can also recommend it for anybody interested in such a hommage. For anybody interested there is also a GMT hommage available with a Seagull movement - important note for that one is that it's bigger than the regular vintage diver. Free nato-strap was also received on all the SMs I bought during the sale.
Only thing I regret with the purchase is to not have chosen some nice custom logo on the dial, as the italic font is getting a bit too understated after a while.
Generally I have to say that SM really makes a nice watch, as also my Date Just hommage with the mother of pearl dial is of high quality. Jody, will you also bringt a review of that one?

I just picked this one up based on your review. Great watch so far. I was worried if it would fit my 7-7/8" (20-cm) wrist so I asked them to include a few extra links. I did not need to bother. The standard bracelet fit on the tightest micro adjust hole so I could still get 4-5 mm. And I like to wear my watches lose. I'm super happy with it.
My only minor complaint is that a screw on one of the endlinks was not tight. Very minor and easy to fix.
I did pick up a black/red/green Connery bond strap but I like the bracelet too much and quickly switched it back.

I just bought a retro diver for under $50 US. The Skagen Fisk. I didn't much like Skagen before Christmas when I got one as a gift.
I looked into the Fisk and it has 100m of water resistance, screw down crown, a Miyota Quartz movement and a mesh bracelet with quick release spring bars. It reminds me of the Timex Q as it has an angular case design and very similar indices, just without the hair pincher bracelet. My only hang up is that it's a mineral crystal rather than sapphire but I'm not expecting the world for under a 50.
    Cheers!

I collect luxury watches and indie ones - this watch is way beyond fantastic for the price. It clearly demonstrates how much the brands out there are manufacturing for, and their respective margins. This could even put some swiss made watches to shame in terms of overall fit, feel and finish, I kid you not. Keep this up San Martin and stay consistent.
Also, a huge plus is that they offer sterile dials - not everyone likes a brand logo and cluttering text on otherwise pure and pristine dials.

Jody, can you please review a watch referred to as “Casio Touch”. I think it is not a Casio at all, but it’s being sold online as if it is a real Casio. It has a case from “Casio Diamond” which is A159wad, but it’s screen is just regular black and white display. The fake one has a “screen touch” function and bright LEDs. Also it appeared almost exactly 4 months ago on TH-cam in multiple unboxing videos from users mostly from Philippines and Indonesia. Casio website does not have anything like it, nor does Amazon. Would be interesting to watch a video where an intentional Casio forgery is reviewed and demonstrated to be not Casio.

In regards to the "submariner" printed on the dial, at the time of purchase, the photos on their website had "automatic" on the dial, however when I received it, it had submariner on the dial. I went back to their website and found all the images had been replaced with "submariner" instead of "automatic". I'm also really glad that they acknowledged the issue with the microadjust and sent out a new link to allow use of all four.
