  • macmost.com/e-2159 When you create a table of contents in Pages, it will include page numbers, but not chapter numbers. You can manually add chapter numbers to your chapter headings, but that can lead to a problem if you need to insert a chapter in the middle. If you want to automatically number the chapters, you can do it be adding a Bullets & Lists style to your chapter headings.

    Much appreciated... Maybe we should request the the sub-numbering automation feature. Everything is so streamlined it would be the perfect addition.

    hey Gary! I am inserting a TOC after my book has been created and now about to upload in epub. Can I get the newly revised TOC to click to certain pages in my epub?

    Hmm I can't figure out how to get past the first step! I click Insert, then Table of Contents, and those three options are all greyed out. Not sure what I'm missing. Each of my chapters has a Heading.

    Hey brother, thanks for sharing. I have a question, I have a repeating text box across the top of my document and was wondering if you know of a way to add line breaks so that the second page of the table of contents does not overlap the text box. Cheers!, Claudio....

    • @macmost

      Make sure the text box is set Text Wrap: Automatic or some other setting to force the TOC to wrap around it.

    • @macmost

      How do you mean? Without a Table of Contents there is nothing to do. Just start a new page (if you want) and write "Chapter X" or whatever you want in whatever style you want.

    how do you get it to recognize the word or words as what you want it to be a title? I keep trying to highlight and then click "Title" under paragraph styles but it's ignoring that and keeps giving me an error message that it can't generate a table of contents because I'm not using the paragraph style set to appear in it. What step am I missing?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Watch from 1:17. The Title style is probably not being used for the table of contents, but the Heading style.

  • @ricardomfreitas

    Great video! But I would like to create a table of contents where I will use just a Title and subtitle. I want to align the text in the center (not changing the ruler) and without number of the page in the end, and subtitle tradicional (align left and with the number of the page in the end). Is it possible? I saw an old version of pages where you select a check box on the left to enable the contents and a check box on the right where it enable or not the number of the page.

    • @ricardomfreitas
      @ricardomfreitas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I almost had sure I could do this before. And after searching a lot, someone said it happened after he shared the document with a colleague. And it was exactly what happened to me too. I duplicate the document and after that I can hide the number of the page. The option is hidden when you share the file. I think it's a good content to make a video!!!!!

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Try it and you'll see. You can select the TOC and then use the Format, Table of Contents sidebar to select Title and Subtitle only. Then select the title-styled items in the TOC and use Format, Text to turn off numbers (it is a checkbox at the bottom) and then center.

    • @ricardomfreitas

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a video that deals with that exact problem. This is probably the closest one. Just keep working with the formatting to get it like you want. Experiment. Play around. That's all I would be doing if I had the same problem.

    • @macmost

      No, but you don't need this special function for that. Just create your own table of contents with regular text as you like. Chapter numbers don't shift like page numbers do as you edit your document.
