  • Salutations Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I'll be discussing a charming little knife from Otter Messer...and heavy emphasis on 'little'! This piece is called the "Messer Kleiner Doktor" or Little Doctor's Knife. It's a rather strange design that seems to be connected with both farm-work and veterinary practices.
Where the knife originated seems to be a subject of debate, although it is likely that the design was first marketed as a castrator. Many other blades started their lives as tools for the farmhand, the Stockman being an excellent example. Although somewhere during it's time of existence, the Little Doctor's Knife made it's way to veterinary clinics. It is likely that this resulted in it's name.
One may wonder if this particular knife has any connection to the traditional 'Doctor's Knife'. While I have no evidence to suggest this is incorrect, there isn't anything linking the two designs, as far as I am aware.
Regardless, the Messer Kleiner Doktor is a wonderful carry piece. It has a unique and delicate style that few of my knives possess. The handle is gently curved to make for a comfortable grip and the Drop-point blade features a very generous 'choil' for your index finger. This also gives the knife scalpel-like precision for detailed cuts. The handle comes in three varieties. Dyed green bone, dyed red bone and Sapeli wood. The knife features brass linings and pins, and bolsters are present on this piece, making it rather lightweight. The spring tension is excellent (7-8) and the steel is 1.4034
Sadly, there are some issues with the fit 'n finish on the Little Doctor's Knife. And while I still very much enjoy and recommend this piece, (especially since I believe it is now discontinued) the price is just a little too high for flaws such as these. Hopefully I just got the worst of the batch.

Brilliant video, mate! Mines got some gaps. But I love this thing. Four finger grip on such a small knife. I love the bone covers. The green dye is so nice. Hope you are well, mate? 🫡 👊

I saw a short of yours on this piece. It sure is beautiful!
The fit 'n finish could be better, but I can't be terribly upset with it. After all, it makes up for it with such great utility.
I'm doing quite well, thank you. How about yourself?
      Cheers and Merry Christmas!

I love Otter knives so much. I have 7 or 8 of them. My favorite is the mercator, then the webermesser and the large anchor knife.

Great choices, my friend! If I had to pick a favourite, it would probably be the Drei Nieten Messer, (Three-Rivet Knife) but I love them all!
      Cheers!

Not seen one before good carry for the UK handle thick enough so comfortable to use. I notice you shooed Alice away rather quickly. lol

It's a great choice for a small carry!
And Alice left on her own accord...sometimes she stays a long time, sometimes she leaves quickly. Cats'll be cats! 😅
      Cheers!
