- I created this project for an art class at my high school in Chicago. I wanted to capture the beauty I saw in my peers, but it turned into an experiment about our perception of self halfway through when I realized my classmates were having a variety of reactions; reactions that made me smile and made me sad. I hope you enjoy. And I hope you can see the beauty in yourself as well as others.

Even as a confident person, I still find it hard to take compliments. I believe that I'm an okay looking person, but it's hard to believe others do.
I find this video heart breaking that you're able to clearly see that people don't see the beauty in themselves and are shocked that someone else can actually see them that way. Kindness cost us nothing and yet we find it difficult to give it away.
This video is so sweet. But it's sad to see how many people didn't react or got mad, it's like they've been through a lot, and felt like the compliments weren't genuine, or thought the cameraman was making fun of them.
Everyone talks about that rude girl but I think that 3:15 this girl looked in more pain than anyone else, hope she's doing okay right now

A lot of people have been saying that the girl at 1:41 is rude, and while how she reacted was rude, I feel bad for her because she reacted in a way where she felt like it was a joke on her. She believes that someone calling her beautiful is a joke, because maybe in the past no one’s ever thought she was beautiful and she has bad self esteem. There’s always a reason for these things.

The girl at 3:15 had such an interesting reaction. A half smile to a frown then a deep breath where her shoulders go down. I wonder what she was thinking. Hard to gauge that reaction.
Yes, she looks down and to the side, as to escape from the moment, my guess is she`s a person who has her emotions very tightly wrapped, or another way to say it, she has very high and strong walls to keep most out. You can see it starts to breach her wall and then she regains control.....her eyes look like they cry a lot, when she`s alone.
They literally act as if you turn the switch of their light on! Fabulous.

Beauty is a bit like schrodinger's cat, you can't know wether or not it's true or not but it doesn't matter. You must assume both options are correct. And that's the truth, things are simultaneously beautiful and not beautiful, because beauty isn't an real tangible thing you can assume whichever option you like most and it will be as good as the truth. The truth in schrodinger's cat doesn't exist, both options are equally true. Beauty is the same. Wether or not it's real does not matter, because both realities are true
@@ape9368 I think most of them took it as a bad joke and just smiled awkwardly not to offend her if she was actually saying the truth. What she did wasn't sincere, and I'm sure that a lot of us know that.
I see all these comments saying "the one reading this is beautiful", but they don't even know how the one reading looks. Yes, beauty is subjective, but these people, or at least some, knew she was doing it because of the views.

She's definitely been through a lot and is hiding that fact by reacting in such an aggressive fashion, almost like an automatic defence mechanism, a turtle hiding within their shell.
Being kind is so under appreciated, and it does not cost you a thing...
It's crushing when you realize that so many of these kids have never been on the receiving end of a compliment their entire lives.
I feel bad for the lady who didn't accept being called "beautiful."
It's safe to assume she isn't used to receiving kindness in such a genuine way; very likely she's been hurt by others to a point where she either doesn't think she's deserving of it or assume she's being tricked again or both. Unfortunately, a lot of people come from similar backgrounds.
Despite that, it's always worth the effort to believe beauty in others even if they don't accept it in the moment. We don't know how her story ends, but we can believe she'll carry those words throughout her life, "I think you're beautiful." And the truth is, she's right.

I study human behavior and you can tell when she stutters "Of what?" she hides her face, suppresses a smile, and goes right into "tough badass mode" to deflect it. Even as she threatens the photographer, you can see her face lacks true aggression/there's just that look in her eyes that shows a suppression of longing/positive emotion (which everyone before her expresses easily). "Clearly you're being goofy" to me is her way of expressing disbelief that this was a genuine compliment.
In my opinion, this is someone who has likely never been genuinely called "beautiful" before, and if she has it's usually been from people who have just wanted one thing out of her. Even at the very end of the exchange you can see her kind of linger for more reinforcement that, no, this isn't a joke.

Maybe the compliment has been used to mock her before. I remember girls and boys in grade school randomly coming up to me to tell me this kind of stuff and then go back to their friend groups and laugh amongst themselves. That hurts when you’re a kid and I can see why she’s so defensive.

I’ve done a bit of research on facial expressions and almost every one of these people showed an extremely genuine smile when they were told that. Then some thought about it for a sec and then were a bit uncomfortable lol but the initial raw reactions of happiness were real and were worth all the effort! 😊

I used to be mad all the time but as I got older I finally started healing and now I don't tend to do that any more but on occasion certain things can trigger it for me. She is indeed beautiful. I wish people would teach there children from a young age that they are beautiful and worthy so when they grow up they have confidence in there self to do anything!

I kinda felt that way too about her.
Well it's an experiment. She must have sensed it. Sometimes you can really tell if a compliment is genuine or not. Sometimes it's best to give compliments to someone for what he/she's wearing or something good that she's done. That way people won't have to feel insecure about themselves, rather, they'll focus on the things they can do to make their life better and the people around them better. They could take pride in those things no matter what happens to their appearance.
@Ruoshui Liu I agree that it was rude and scary, but everyone has a reason for their actions and decisions, even if it isn’t a good one. I think that the reason here is insecurity, which can be a tough thing to get over. She definitely needs someone to help her with it, though

Although she didn't mean it literally, it was just her way of saying "shut up, you're lying." Maybe she's used to hearing that from people in her life that's why she uses those words too.

All of these kids are truly beautiful. It's so sad that they don't know. I remember the first time I was told I was beautiful: I was half leaning in a hospital bed as I just got better from a life-threatening disease. I thought that moment changed my life.

Doesn't mean what she did was right either. Your environment doesn't entitle you to be a jerk or a prick, even though it might make you like that. But I personally think you ultimately decide the actions you take. What she did wasn't nice, whether she received insults or not.

i feel so horrible for the people who didn't react to it, reacted negatively, or just clearly looked like they didn't believe it. i really hope they find the beauty within them, everyones beautiful and everyone deserves to feel beautiful.
they all look good in my opinion, if they wanna go extra, they can, through healthier life styles, like doing typical and facial exercises, skin care, fashion and style, etc. But i think what will beat everything else about them is their charm and inner beauty

The guzs were objectively far from beautifull, some of the girls were somewhat cute. If she picked people she thought were actually beautifull, she would not have gotten any decent reactions. Each person's reactions show how undervalued they were... Where was the love that these incredible people deserved? Where were the people that these wonderful beings deserved?... The greatest sadness in watching this video is knowing that everyone probably didn't believe what they were told. Yes, I'm coming here to comment it 8 years later to say: all these people are beautiful in their own ways, all these people deserve to be beautiful in their own ways, it's not about each person's physique and appearance, it's about each one of them and what they are.

Agressive reaction for words ,,you’re beautiful”, beause of taking it as a joke instantly - so heartbreaking, esp though the girl making this video was so nice and genuine saying it and later, explaining. The filmed girl had to had so much of anxiety, inside, trying to cover it up this way. So sad :( But a lot of people would react this way I think, having such low self confidence and such a bad picture of themselves that they would automatically think someone wants to make fun of them. I was there, when hearing someone laughing (on the street or wherever) the instant reaction im my head was that they laugh at me and the way I look.
I wish to all people like this to find their beauty and peace in mind, so we don’t have to keep our true self behind the mask in fear of what people can say or think. ❤
