The target audience for perfect completion was simply eased up on in later titles. It's not that there was no sense behind it, it was just not most common sense due to the target audience.
The amusing thing about the PAL version of Crash 2 is that it is preferred for speedrunning. When you perform a neutral slide spin in the PAL version, your momentum is significantly higher than it is in the NTSC version. The neutral slide spin is only doable in the ps1 Crash 2, as in Crash 3 you cannot move anywhere without continued movement input.

I herd somewhere that the way boxes work in crash 1 was due to a bug that caused the boxes to respawn when you died.. I don't remember the specifics of the bug but this means Crash 2 onward was how crash 1's boxes were supposed to work.
