  • I show you how to make a frame saw blade from a piece of 1095 carbon spring steel shim plate (0.016"). Frame saw blades can be expensive and difficult to find; most blades have a heat treated edge that makes sharpening difficult and prohibitive. @polywright

    Bandsaw blades can be used as frame saw blades but they get expensive as it gets wider (0.75"+) , and are often bi-metal or have a treated edge. I am sure if you ever researched different frame saw blades you'd have already encountered these and many more problem.
    I made this for my traditional Chinese woodworking frame saw (中国传统木公框锯) and it has worked great for me needs. I hope to bring you a series of traditional Chinese woodworking tool soon.
    Checkout the links below where I show you how to make a variety of traditional Chinese woodworking tools.

    Really nice job! Its easy to forget that our forebears made all their tools by hand for thousands of years. I have great respect for you keeping this tradition alive!

      Thanks Mac. It had to be done, I couldn't find frame saw blades that I liked and of quality 1095 steel. There was enough of a challenge and a lack of any previous examples on youtube for me to make one. Several traditional Chinese woodworking tools are being (have been) made/filmed this was a small part of that series.

      The Chinese frame saw and European (German) frame saw have the word frame in common, but most of how it's made and all of how it's used are very different. It's like night and day of the same Earth.

    Interesting! I've been thinking off and on about making one of those miter boxes that use this type of blade and making the blade itself was part of that. Had an old 26" hand saw in mind for that, but the plate is thicker than ideal.

    • @johnzzhu
      @johnzzhu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks John. May be it'll be on now. Blade thickness was one of the problems for me. The 1095 spring steel is pretty nice. I think I'd get a 0.02" or a 0.025" for my next plate; the 0.016" gives a really thin kerf, and you know thin kerfs are trendy these days. BTW if you were thinking of using spray paint to transfer the tooth pattern don't waste your time, it was a complete failure for me.

    • @johnzzhu
      @johnzzhu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bandsaw blades as frame saw blades has been done. They are too often bimetal or heat treated which makes sharpening difficult/impossible w/o diamond files. Hence the need to make my own blades from regular old high carbon steel, the same steel that's been tested for thousands of years. with specific thickness and tooth shape.

      Anywhere that carries ECE tools is a good candidate. Highland woodworking carries a variety. I bought several in different styles and now basically have a lifetime supply. About $10/each. They also have a Japanese style toothed one but I have not been thrilled with the longevity of that type tooth. They are wonderful until they are not.

    If you want to rip saw I've found a wider blade is best. Meaning the feet face to back as wide. The wider blade helps keep you sawing straight acting as a guide. Starting with a block clamped to your work piece wheen starting the cut will aid you as well. So with your shim stock left make you one double width and do a rip and I bet you will be pleased. Also on finer teeth patterns you can use less tooth pitch since that's to aid in clean out and it's only removing tiny bits it doesn't take as much to keep the teeth cleared of debris. I'd also cut a more aggressive blade for faster cutting. When getting material ready a fast cut will get by then to your finer cut to get you to finished size. If you haven't yet make a couple shooting boards for squaring up your cut ends with a hand plane. I worked hand tool woodworking with my grandpa years back. When I was older I went to all the power tools money could buy. Iv e gotten back into hand working but only on smaller items that I can afford to spend a little extra versus a dresser or furniture build that requires a lot of surface.

    • @johnzzhu
      @johnzzhu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not quite sure I follow everything. There is a limit to how wide a blade can be and still be a frame saw; if it is wider than 1.5" I might was well use a plate saw. I do almost all rough cuts with power tools, I get nothing out of using hand tools to saw a big piece. If you watched my other videos you'll see a shooting board.

    I'm so grateful to see videos on Chinese hand saws, with English dialogue. Thank you! The alternate bending of saw teeth is called "set" (i.e. the set of the teeth, setting the teeth, more set, less set, removing the set), the path left by the saw is called the "kerf". Where did you get the steel shim? Is this a common hardstore product?

  • @thomasarussellsr
    @thomasarussellsr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Awesome video and inspiration for those hard to find blades. (Just make them yourself.) Where do you find a good saw file though? The files at any of my local "big box" 'hardware' stores are garbage; they all have either twists, bends, broken teeth, or a combination of issues that make them basically useless for this kind of project. Thanks for any help or links to a source for good quality files.

    • @johnzzhu
      @johnzzhu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am used a standard small file from a big box store. Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with twist and bends; I've never actually had any problems. May be you have the "curse."

    • @JeepTherapy
      @JeepTherapy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ace hardware has Nicholson files. They’re not premium but they will get the job done. I haven’t discovered any twist or anything like that in the ones I’ve bought yet.

    How were you able to make the teeth 'flare out' (making the teeth/kerf slightly wider than the rest of the blade) or was that step omitted ?

    • @johnzzhu
      @johnzzhu  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A saw set tool is used to set the kerf. It is not omitted.

    Did you source the shim stock locally, or where?
    I looked at grainger and they had some 1095, some of which they describe as full hard where some other had a blank in the hardness description. Is the stock you used hardened? or blue tempered, or what?

    • @johnzzhu
      @johnzzhu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      blue tempered (RC50-55), 6" x 48", the thickness is ~ 0.5mm, ordered online from Amazon.

    fyi AS A possible alternative you can buy a euro german 9 tpi frame saw blade that is intended for a euro frame saw , but the kerf would be wider ?? than the chinese blade.

    • @johnzzhu
      @johnzzhu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no set width, thickness, or length to a Chinese saw blade. One could always buy a frame saw blade, the point on the video is to show one how to make one oneself.

    If I'm going to make my own blade and cut in the teeth I'm probably going full on stupid and using a file and a guide block.
    Keep up the good work!
