Great book for a beginner . th-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.

From Odate's description (yeah, I bought the book), that appears to be used regularly as a splitting/slitting gauge. That's a good thing, because I used to build dulcimers and want to get back into it. I need to line the sides to increase the glue area. These lining strips are about 1/8 x 1/4 in. usually of pine, willow or other light flexible wood (they're cold bent). Just what I need. I had always split them out with a pocket knife; very tedious and lots of rebating the wrong side, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.
    Thanks for the heads up.
Could you have used a 3/32" bit to thread the coping saw blade through? If necessary, you could plug the hole with a bamboo skewer.

When you are cutting the angled mortice for the wedge, an easier way to check you are at the correct angle is to put a mirror on the far side of your workpiece and look into the mirror to check the angle. It works well when drilling holes on an angle as well.

Nathan is slacking that "broke on through" line would have been a perfect spot for a 'Doors' reference... smh some people's children... oh and I do have one question, about the first one you made where you "messed up" is there some way you could just finish it, rotate the blade and give it to a left handed person? I mean you hold it with the right hand and what about people who hold on the left, I'm right handed but my wife and daughter are both left handed so just wondering

When you said "mortises are in the right spot" I was noticing that they were not symetrical. Then the reveal. Nice joke!
I bet it wasn't funny on the moment.
Woodworking is dealing with our errors but these do not forgive. Sometimes even after checking we still make them.
I will give it a go at this gauge. Probably the one I need...
    Thanks for the inspiration.

Gday Mate!! Strike me Lucky!!! I now have a whole crap load of work to do making tools as well as the huge table Im making. Itll be very enjoyable though. Also what do we want from you, like stuff to do. Well Id be stoked if there was some stuff you could do on more permanent tooling. The poor mans stuff is going to get us out of trouble. However, Id be keen for something with a little brass in it. That square with the brass pins is beautiful and its going to work really well. Also I didnt know a lot of the plans are free. Also Also yeh I agree with those below. Take some time. If I was able to and it didnt live down under Id go to some of the more interesting places like North Dakota. Yep! That's right there's nothin up there except trees and nothing. I like nothing... LOL. Also also also yeh some us need to catch up to you LOL Cheers Mate.

So did you effectively make a left-handed version when you built it the first time?
As a left-handed person, I have to mirror everything to get things to work in my favor. Hand tools and power tools.

Consider buying a jeweler's piercing saw
It's almost identical to a coping saw but the blades don't have pins on them
They're held in place with thumb screws instead

Any chance Rex would make a video about composite wood? Composite wood is widely used by woodworkers in my town, but one they use a lot which I hate is MDF (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-density_fibreboard). My town was built over a swamp, the moisture here is very high, so MDF furniture just don't last here and yet furniture stores here are filled with those - so I've grown a distrust of composite wood for that reason.

100% it’s a species of wood called sapele. And 100% I can relate to the late night drunken tool purchases . Couple weeks ago I actually bought a guitar at 3 am while drinking a few stiff Canadian club and ginger ales. For god sakes I don’t even know how to play the guitar or any instrument for that matter. Need to learn now though else the wife won’t be to happy with me.

Enjoy your vacation, but if you want to make a quick video that doesn't require you to make anything. I just finished the 30 dollar bench but I haven't added any holding mechanisms. Now that you have used the bench for some time I would love to hear what you still use and what wound up not being as helpful. You seem to just use your vice in later videos. If you had to do it all over again what would you do different? Is making a palm or crochet worth it or should I just focus on the vice. Love to revisit that project and hear your thoughts about it now.

I dunno if the angle is correct for this, but you might wanna try switching directions after the first few knife passes. When run backwards, this tool could act like a single saw tooth or a scribe. The advantage is it will clear its own kerf and make a really, really deep score. It will even saw all the way through a piece of wood, if you needed to, or to the full depth of your rabbet. But the rake angle has to be significantly negative. It may take a bit of filing on what is the back or spine of the knife (what will be the face of the saw tooth) to get the correct amount of negative rake to prevent the tooth from digging and jamming. You also want that face to be flat with crisp 90 degree edges to do the cutting/clearing.
You might like to make a few knife passes first, so that the surface fibers don't fray and tear out. After that, you could (theoretically) switch directions, and the single-tooth saw will leave a nice edge. I use a homemade scribe in this fashion, and it's not angled or ergonomic to make the reverse cut in the knifey direction; I just do a few light scribe/saw passes to cleave the surface fibers before applying more pressure.
The reason I make this suggestion is the shape of the blade and the rocking sole of the tool. It makes be believe this may actually be intended to be a scribe and that you may actually be using it backwards. I shape and sharpen my scribe just like that, even though 90% of the "edge" isn't actually going to touch anything. Only the point, really.
Another way to get this sawing/kerf-clearing deep score/cut is to run it the direction you are already doing, but cut a notch in the blade somewhere in the belly. The blade in front of the notch will act like the mouth of a plane to prevent digging. The back of the notch acts like the face of the saw tooth. You can fine tune it from there.

That's a really nice piece, & your wrong side rebate just means you also have a left-handed version now.. I think.
I've wrecked my hands a bit doing the inverted planing thing, but it can be made much safer by clamping your little piece first & then holding the clamp to draw it over the plane. The clamp will go across the sole, so you can hold that at either end & your fingers won't go near the iron at all. Alternatively, if there's clearance, do it front & back in a G clamp and its spine doubles as a handle.

You mentioned that you hadn't yet added a mortise gauge to your woodworking for humans toolbox, and I find it funny that the first actual tool I made was a marking gauge that doubles as a non-adjustable mortise gauge. What makes it funny is that I have never once used the mortise gauge side of the tool. I have been wanting to make a mallet since I made it, but I have never had a scrap post to use for the head. I suppose I should just go buy one at this point, since it has been a while.

The first one you made can still be used without a problem. The location of the wedge probably wouldn't impact performance, and the 'hand' of the tool would be primarily determined the the direction/angle of the cutting blade, so other than having the main block mirrored, it can still be made into a useful tool
