The game at the end is called mahjong. The significance of what Rachel does during the game is that she gives away the winning piece and let Eleanor win. When she shows all of her tiles before she walks away, It’s her showing that she is sacrificing her crucial piece that could make her win to Eleanore referencing in their conversation when she says "Only a fool folds a winning hand." She could have take the win and start a new life with Nick but she sacrifices her love, giving Eleanor the example in the game. This one simple action shows that Rachel loves Nick enough to let him go, that family is first, and that she's a lot more like Eleanor than Eleanor was giving her credit for. That game is what changes her mind about letting Nick marry her.

I agree 100% and I'm grateful she went to her friend's house first. That way she could help her. Nick kind of blindsided her in that way. I understand why but still.
The mahjong game at the end is important because Rachel let Eleanor have the piece she needed to win, but Rachael had a winning hand the whole time and simply held it back. It's Rachel showing Eleanor that Rachel actually had all the power in their hostile relationship (even while Eleanor thought she was winning), and that everything Eleanor will have from this point is because Rachel gave it to her - not because Eleanor won it herself. Eleanor can't even enjoy the 'victory' because she will always have to think about how Rachel chose the future for her (like what she says from 56:32).

Nomatter how well you get along with your in-laws, nomatter how long the relationship is, there will always be something wrong coz you maybe brought up differently or how things are handled.
Facts. My mom is Filipino. She and her sisters treat their all us kids' spouses and long term partners as temporary. Nevermind that some of my cousins have been married for over a decade and have kids. In their mind, these outsiders will never fit into our family. And we weren't even rich. SMH
The watch is a Rolex Daytona. If it's a brand new issue, it would be worth around 40K. If it's a vintage model, it'd be worth around a million dollars.
The watch is a vintage model and it's worth $1 miilion. The author Kevin Kwan rejected the original watch the producers borrowed. He said it's too cheap and "Crazy Rich Asians" wouldn't have worn it. He borrowed one from his acquaintance. The watch was flied over to Singapore for that scene with security guard.
In India, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries there are only like 15 or so ultra rich families that control the majority of the power and wealth. Everyone knows these families and they make themselves known. They keep the wealth where it is. They send their kids abroad for their education, typically to England, Switzerland, France, and when they come back, they are excpected to either take over or work for their families. Daughters can also work for the companies either in an actual working capacity or they're made to do PR things (smiling and looking good behind their husbands), and are expected to have kids to continue on the legacy. If one of these kids decides they are going to marry for love (i.e. someone poor and not in their inner circles), these families will actively try to bury them or will prevent their children from seeing these "peasants." In some cases, they will even force those not in the life to get educated and be instructed on how to be a part of their families while lying about their origins. It's intense. People always think of the English monarchy when they think of these types of stories, but nope, its global as well.
I didn’t think much when I first watched it but now, I think I would kick my bf ass if I were Rachel. If weren’t for her friend, she would make a fool out of herself. What was he thinking?!?
I read Crazy Rich Asians book on a whim. I found it at an airport bookstore and decided to read it on the plane. It is such a good book! The movie does not do it justice. Great book, highly recommend.
I bought all three books. I like the movie better. I had to jump around to get through the books. Kevin Kwan spent way too much ink on what people wore or own and much less on character development. Rachel was a weak character in the book. The mahjong scene was added by the scriptwriter Adel Lim. He's not a good writer. He writes about rich people he knows. Given his family connections he knows a lot of old and new money families in Asia. He intended to satirize them. Characters and plots are weak.
I just realised the Island is named Samsara. Its a sanskrit word which is borrowed by Malays into Sengsara which means something like a tortured feeling. It's funny how Rachel was living her sengsara time there with the girls.
