Gucci was not making luggage sets. The best luggage sets you could have in 1995 was LV. So that shot in the hotel was a STATEMENT. Absolutely NOT Gucci though

    I get that Eleanor was trying to keep with family tradition however it wasn't because she truly believed in it. It was because she is forever trying to impress her mother-in-law. Eleanor doesn't seem to know her worth unless her mother-in-law dictates what it is. Hence why Eleanor became jealous when the grandmother immediately accepted Rachel. Rachel had confidence within herself, she knew her worth. Eleanor doing the background check on Rachel wasn't to protect her son from a shameful woman but to eliminate the competition for her mother-in-law's acceptance smh

    • @vadalia3860
      @vadalia3860 3 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      I do think Eleanor believed in the traditions to a certain extent. After all, what Nick relates about his mother being there for him with a basket of dumplings after school everyday and about spending time with his family as a kid making them is the kind of Quality Family Time a lot of parents strive to have with their kids and it's an admirable goal. I do think she was a little jealous about Rachel being favored by the grandma immediately (which I think is just a realistic family dynamic where people are often less demanding about their grandkids vs their kids) as well as just perpetuating a generational adversarial dynamic between mother-in-laws and daughter-in-laws, however I think the biggest issue was that Rachel had no intentions of giving up her career to be a housewife and mother. Eleanor said she gave up becoming a lawyer to help her husband run his business but Colin even points out to Nick the problems he & Rachel are going to have if they get married because he's expected to run the family business one day and she's not going to want to end her career. I think part of Eleanor's resentment is also because back when she was a young woman, it was also much more expected for a woman to sacrifice her passions and career for the family whereas Rachel has many more options than she herself did.

      @@noahorakwue2653 I read that movie adaptations of the other 2 books are in the works. I liked the first movie but it was very different from the book. I guess they'll just drop the plot of Eleanor not welcoming Rachel in her home until she finds her real dad, which is all well and good really. Each book has SO many different plots going on and there needs to be time put aside for Kitty Pong, who is a major character in the second and third books on top of Astrid and Rachel.

      @seaztheday4418 3 ปีที่แล้ว +164

      And if you understand the rules of mahjong (which I assume you do since you brought it up) you'll understand that the events of the game just emphasises Rachel's monologue; Rachel had a really good hand, Eleanor had an ok hand, but they both needed the same tile. Rachel gave up a STRONG winning hand so that Eleanor could win with a weak one. Rachel's decision to let Eleanor win the game directly parallels Rachel rejecting the proposal, and THAT is why Eleanor's face is so shook

    I could easily write a 30-page paper covering the nuances found within this movie. There is so much information that people not familiar with Singapore/Malaysia would not understand.
    @4:10 ALL of the staff are Filipino and Indonesian. Not a knock on them. Americans would consider "help" as Mexicans, but in SG or HK, help staff almost always comes from the Philippines or Indonesia, so the attention to detail of that tiny scene is immaculate. In Dubai the majority of "workers" are Filipino or Indian
    @12:07 more staff from Philipines
    @4:00 Hawker center, but this is actually in KL, not SG. Virtually everything is spicy. I always joke that even the water is hot in SG. I would eat there literally every day whenever I was in KL or SG. Just incredible food. Not every hawker center is the same, with experience you find the ones you like most
    @4:36 the point of showing this "over the top" house is to provide context. The family is "new money". The daughter drives a fancy sports car. Part of the context is showing that the family is doing more spending than earning. Whereas later you see Eleneor showing "old money" through generations. Contrast that Awkwafina is driving a Audi R8 whereas Astrid is being driven in a Rolls Royce. You might say, well Astrid is buying sooooo much..what about that? Her character is a famous model and philanthropist in the movie, which means wearing certain things is connecting her with sponsors.
    @5:32 two Indian guards greet the car. There are many Indians in SG and HK due to the British Empire inviting themselves to conquer parts of India and then "relocate" people to other territories of the crown. There are even Indian temples in SG. Although the origins of how and why Indians had arrived to SG/HK are not so good, many families (over generations) have prospered as the nations' economies boomed.
    @11:14 at the wedding, only the main walkway is filling with water, no one attending is getting wet
    @3:00 "wearing a lucky color will make a good first impression" - this is correct, it would show the "native asians" that she, the "foreign american" understands symbolism. Just shocked her mother did not give her some oranges to present as gifts LOL
    @3:18 they are flying on an Airbus A830. Each "seat" for that trip is around $30,000 (one way). So Nick likely dropped $90,000 for two round-trip tickets (roundtrip is always cheaper). There are two full levels to the plane, they are on the upper level. There is a full bar and also an actual shower. Your "seat" is a lounge-type area to get work done, then you go across "the aisle" to your beds. Proper luxury.
    Only hitting on points from this video, there is so much more. SG is so damn hot. It also rains quite a lot. Do visit Sentosa and Jurong if anyone ever visits. Wander around the Raffles Hotel and Peninsula Hotel (every guest is given a chauffered Rolls Royce for shopping trips along Orchard road)
    Amazing movie, we need more like this!

    Brothers and sister of Christ we must all come together and devote our lives to the Lord so that he who dies on the cross to pay for our own sins can live eternal life by his side. There will come a day where the trumpets sound and this Earth will be distroyed. Those of who have lived a Godly life will go to heaven and those who have not will suffer in torment by the eternal flames. Allow our father to come into your hearts now before it is too late. It is his grace, love and mercy on us sinners that allows us this opportunity.

    The actors and actress in this film were probably delusional or desperate to be on the A-list Hollywood actors. Shouldn't even been made in the first place. This movie is more like a portrayal of Chinese or somewhere around the China region. Not all Asian act like this. The way these characters were told to act or if they even know what they're doing is so cringy. If you're trying to get on the A-list Hollywood actors this movie just made it worse and they don't even get paid that much. Unless they were getting at $20 million I wouldn't sell myself to look bad. There's been rumors on how much the main cast were paid, but I know these kind of film don't get anyway near 7 figure.

    I will say that the book & audiobook is 1000 times better than the movie. It actually focused on the family & cultural history of the characters and what is at the root at such a lavish lifestyle & their general behavior.
    Unfortunately this movie turned into luxury porn and very little else.
