  • Leaking valve covers, and valve cover gaskets are common. In this video I will show you step by step how to replace a valve cover gasket, or a valve cover. We will also cover the valve cover breather, or PCV valve built into this valve cover. Valve cover failure is common on the VW BPY engine. Thanks to FCP Euro for sponsoring this video and the MK5 Project.

    Thanks man. I'm an aircraft mechanic and a forty year gearhead. I'd be able to work through this myself, but having seen your video, it will make it much easier. Gotta do my grandson's Passat. OBDII says random misfires from all four. but valve cover is leaking from its periphery, so I'm thinking maybe the plug wells are full of oil and possibly causing the misfires. If a clean up and new gasket don't fix it, then I'll go ahead and put new coils and plugs in it. .

  • @jrbdtx

    If you're replacing this because your oil fill tube has completely broken off, be aware, you CAN simply install the oil cap directly to the valve cover. The filler neck was added to raise the fill cap up to the Jetta engine cover height, but on the Audi engines, this neck isn't glued on because there isn't a big cover.

    I been having some oil consumption issues/ burning oil and rough idle. Changed out the PCV, rear vent tube, spark plugs, and ignition coils. Still an issue. Learned from you to look into the Valve cover as its part of the PCV system and does fail over time. (Min 0:45) I ordered a new OEM valve cover.
    I examined the old valve cover and noticed it was warped and broken on the bottom. i stuck a small flashlight into one of the ports and you can actually see the light shining through. Happy i changed it out. Hope it helps with any oil consumption. The Engine definitely runs smoother. Thanks for all you do for your viewers and customers.

The coils are not oem and I just ordered oem r8 coils since I don't like aftermarket crap on these cars. I have been having issues with my 2012 Jetta SE 2.5L for some time now. It's an automatic and sputters when shifting up and jerks hard when downshifting, especially from 2nd the 1st. I use the OBDeleven reader and I keep getting the codes P3078 and P0106. I replaced the MAP sensor about 8 months ago and it seemed to have fixed the issue but then resurfaced. I recently replaced the PCV Valve Cover with gasket last week and cleaned the MAP sensor thinking it would resolve the issue but the check engine light came back on shortly after. Can you please recommend the next step to take to troubleshoot? Thank you.

    I have a 2012 Eos with 55k on it. Water pump ended up leaking on it due to the valve cover leaking down on the water pump seal. Took the VW to the VW dealership, they replaced both the Water Pump and the Valve Cover (1,374.00 - Valve Cover Gasket, no charge for the Water Pump). A few weeks later the service engine light went on after my wife took a sharp turn. After checking the dipstick there was no oil on dipstick, added 3 qts of oil to the car took it back to the dealership only to find out that the oil was being distributed into the turbo. I'm wondering when the valve cover gasket was replaced if damage was done to the PCV Valve and cause oil to leak in the turbo? Any thoughts

    • @jett-rampartflyer2852
      @jett-rampartflyer2852 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It shouldn't. Gasket material generally isn't hard enough to cause issues, unless the engine ate alot of it at once. Little pieces, no big deal. I once had a helper leave a microfiber rag inside an intake manifold once.. I installed it, didn't check to make sure passageways were clear.. sucked that rag around 2 valves. Spent the day nipping & melting at pieces of rag, hours & hours. Replaced 2 bent pushrods. Engine had 6,200 miles on it. Was a Chevy 5.3

    People: Please please please take Charles' advice on connecting the back hoses before screwing down the cover. The larger hose is a bitch and a half to move. I had to undo all the goddamned cover screws a second time to get that hose back on. In fact, I recommend re-attaching the band clamp (hose clamp in this video) before moving it so it doesn't pop off while you're positioning the cover.
    I don't understand why we need to mention the single use band on the larger hose. It doesn't seem necessary to mess with this clamp further back at all.
    Another tip: I found it helpful to follow the torque sequence even when initially inserting the screws. It just seems to go down easier that way.
    Finally, a small correction 3:32. That's not your timing belt cover. It's your serpentine belt inspection cover. Timing chain is on the right side. But I'm sure Charles knew that and misspoke.
    Awesome video!

    Thanks for the vid, I'll be tackling this later this week. I wasn't able to move the gasket off at all on my initial try. It might have been a combination of the engine being stone cold and being too afraid to loosen the bolts all the way.
    How far can the bolts be loosened before I worry about them falling off the cover and into the engine bay? Some other vids show quite a bit of struggling with the back two hoses (mine are on pretty tight unlike the ones on the vid)..

    • @HumbleMechanic

      No, that is a very different setup. That valve cover is more like a cam bearing plate.

      HumbleMechanic thanks. My valve cover has started to weep a bit of oil after a head replacement last year. At least that’s the highest point on the engine that shows oil leakage.

    So I have been trying to find this smell of burning oil on my mkv Jetta gli for the longest time, I have rebuilt the vacuum pump it's not leaking. I have looked at the valve cover but I don't really see any noticeable oil around it. Any idea what could this be? No check engine light.

    • @HumbleMechanic

      Maybe the exhaust is leaking? OR the oil filter housing.

    How would you know if you need to replace the gasket? I have a lot of oil debris all around the area, and have been having problems with high rpm, low acceleration type issues. I have, changed the HPFP pressure regulator, AND the HPFP itself now, and still the same issue. I am getting: P0171 (too lean) P0087 (fuel rail, pressure too low), etc. could it be the gasket possibly or?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doubt it is the gasket causing the drivability issues. That usually only causes oil leaks

    • @millhouse313

      HumbleMechanic so could the cover be cracked then? I also noticed that a vacuum line, that’s right beside the hpfp, has a giant crack where it connects at the top. (It’s literally the one you say don’t even look at, in your “how to change follower/hpfp” video). Could this cause the issues I’m seeing and or the CELs that I’m seeing? Thank you so much for your reply sir. I’m a big fan of your channel.

      I have seen this be the cause of oil consumption. It may or may not fix the car we are talking about here, but it very well could.

    Do the electronic torque wrench need to be recalibrated after a few years like regular torque wrenches click style?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they usually recommend every few years like the clickers.

    • @automedic9781
      @automedic9781 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should only ever need to be calibrated if you have to put a circuit board in them. My Snap-On guy sold me mine by bringing the demo in, throwing it on the ground, and then putting it on the torque checker and showing me it was still 100% accurate. Sure enough I accidentally dropped mine a few months later and took it on the truck the next week, and still 100%.
