  • Changing seals and o-rings on a 1995 Toyota Tacoma rack and pinion. Didn't want to pay $600 for a reman unit when I could get a seal kit for $50 and figured I could do it myself.

This man is a genius. The way he got the seal out and the hex plug.

Great video. This is the same rack & pinion on my son's 1998 Tacoma 4WD and I was stuck after getting the end cap off. Got to the point where you used the genius trick to remove the first inner seal with screws and I tried it - worked like a charm. Now my rack & pinion is all apart and ready for the new seals and O-Rings. I really appreciate you taking the time to film this and my hat is off to you for your ingenuity. Great work!

Just an fyi, it wasn't necessary to put PS fluid in the tension portion of the pinion control body. This area should only have grease. The seal you knocked out way inside the steering gear housing keeps the fluid from entering the pinion area. You noticed the seal in the center of your shaft. Fluid gets pumped in between the deep seal next to the pinion control housing and the center seal on the shaft and assists the pinion to force the shaft to the right side (making a left turn). When making a right turn, the fluid is forced into the right section of the shaft - all to assist the pinion in sliding the shaft back and forth. But no fluid ever enters the area from the pinion section to the left end. Again just an fyi if you ever find yourself doing another.

I thought the power steering fluid enters the pinion area and basically via the spool valves then goes onto 1 of the two areas you mention to assist in left/right steering. So how does it return back to the pump ?
Also - do either of you know how to air check a R&P after rebuild to make sure all ok before mounting on truck ?

Holding up prefect, have not had to add fluid since I reinstalled.

      Hello,
Great Video. What brand of Seal Kit did you use to repair the unit?

Hello where can I get a rebuild manual for my rack and pinion?
It's been almost a month my car hasn't been driven since I replaced my rack and pinion the second time.
I couldn't get the wheels straight, one goes left the other goes right because the inner tie rod ends were a little over 2 inches shorter, when measuring to my original rack.
I've replaced my rack and pinion twice both were reman' units and the tie rods ends were short, the companies just rebuild them and sell as a bolt in but they don't use the right inner tie rods.
It's best not to buy a reman because once you return your core, you have no way to match your new one.

I have been resealing hydraulics cylinders at work lately and I was starting to wonder how similar steering racks are. Glad to find this video. I recognize most of the seals and tactics used to disassemble and reassemble. Now I want to do the leaky one in my car. Lol

is there supposed to be fluid in the bellows or normally dry? If there is fluid in there, does that mean a seal is bad? My bellows developed a hole and fluid came out

my control valve is leaking at the top part where the steering wheel connects, i took it out but it doesnt have that part 16:31 to screw the bottom part off so what would you recommend i do to push the pinion out of the housing to replace the seals ?
    i have a 98 tacoma sr5 5 speed manual.

Do they give you the bushings that take the play / slop out of the rack ? Or are those guide bushings built into the seals ?

    • @fixincrap3729
      @fixincrap3729  4 ปีที่แล้ว

You get bushings for the ends of the rack. You can take up the slop with the big hex that adjusts pinion tension against the rack

You have to remove it to get the rack apart
