    When replacing the large seal use a socket large enough to fit over the the yoke and hit it with rubber or dead blow hammer. This will aid in keeping the seal from being installed improperly resulting in the seal leaking.
    When removing the seal use a curved pick. Drilling and using a screw can result in damaging the rack. In a senior master technician with 35 years of professional automotive experience.

    Great video...wish I could do it myself.....Had a question. Have 03 mazda 2.0 protoge....According to the shop the rack and pinion is leaking...1. its leaking from where? and its leaking of what ? Should I e able to see oil ,grease or any kind of substance when looking at the boots? Thank you very much.

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if it's leaking a lot you will see power steering fluid on the floor you can check what your power steering fluid level is under hood in reservoir and that will tell you how much you've been leaking if it's not a ton of fluid I wouldn't worry about it and just keep it topped off but if it's leaking a ton you will need to have the leak addressed and a lot of times it involves replacing the whole rack and pinion. Unless it was leaking from input seal like mine, but its the same labor price either way.

    Thanks Jonny for the video, the rack and pinion on my 1987 Toyota supra leaks from the driver side inner rod, the boot is usually get filled with oil, question is can the seal be replaced, or should I replace the whole thing. thanks

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +transformer889 Thanks for watching & commenting. I wouldn't bother trying to replace the seal if it's one of the inner seals like you're describing. It's too much work to go through and then have it leak again or have another leak start up since it's probably at the end of its life. A new rack isn't too bad of a price, but a heads up, most places will want you to give them your old one for a Core exchange.

    Can you replace Seal in the rack without removing the rack from the car? I have leaking seal, I removed the Inner Tie Rod boot on the driver side, and there was some liquid inside. I'm afraid the removing of the rack will be too complicated procedure for me. I saw some films, where they replace the seal on the car, but maybe it is only for certain vehicles. Also sometimes you can read statements, that when you replace the Inner TR, some precautions should be taken not to damage the rack and pinion. But everyone on youtube just replace it without those precautions. Maybe it is only for certain cars? Can you give your opinion on this matter? I think maybe I damaged the seal on the driver side, when I replaced the Inner TR on the passenger side (with no precautions, since I don't know what they are).
    Thank you for the great film.

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome. Yes most people just replace the whole rack if you have major leaks from the ends, its just not worth trying to rebuild. I got lucky this one just needed seal. Its much easier to work on with it out, Id take it out and see what problem is, then if needed replace whole rack. Not too much more work

    • @olenaerhardt7725
      @olenaerhardt7725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JonnyDIY I see, thank you for your replay. Yesterday I removed the Inner TR (on the driver side), observed and cleaned the end of the rack again, didn't see any leaks. So I assume they are small, and I can go for a while just by adding Lucas "Steering Fluid Leeks stop". There is some small leak obviously, bcs how that fluid could accumulate in the boot, but I'll do it later. Now the car (2003 Chevrolet Cavalier) needs to go for Inspection, so I'll just install a new Inner & Outer TRs, brakes and that's it. In general what looks scary to me about that rack extraction, that you need to straighten the wheel (though I have that tool in the set, you know you can press the brake pedal tool and to keep the wheel in the certain position tool), that is minor of course, but then you disable the air bag, so primarily I'm nervous about that air bag, if I mess up and that bag will pop up when you are driving. Also that particular model has very tight and limited space on suspension, it has a subframe which you need to
      drop to remove the Steering Rack.But all that is for the future, I'll do some more research on that question. Thank you kindly again, appreciate a great deal.

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@olenaerhardt7725 you're welcome, glad I could help. Yes Lucas should help slow or stop the leak if its really small leak 👍

    • @olenaerhardt7725
      @olenaerhardt7725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JonnyDIY I bought that car (2003 Chevy Cavalier) new and nothing was done on
      the Inner TRs, so the leak is there, but it is so small that can accumulate only in several years, I assume. Shouldn't be neglected of course, I'll take care about it later. For right now I'll use Lucas Steering Fluid Stop Leak to be on the safe side. Your film and comments are very helpful, appreciate it a great deal.

      @JonnyDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if thats the problem, if you can pin point where its leaking check your repair manual and see the breakdown of the seals/parts on the rack and pinion you think are faulty. Its often best to replace the whole rack and pinion.

    How long can I ride on a bad rack and pinion? Been doing it for 5 years 100k plus lol I mean I'm not loosing power steering fluid. It drives and steers fine even alignment on point. I do hear very minor noise when parking or backing up( you wont hear unless you really listen ) etc which got little worse over years also boot is torn I got about 255k on my camry don't want to put money into it besides that car good mechanical condition any advice? I wanna make this car last without doing unnecessary work $$ save money

    • @JonnyDIY
      @JonnyDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it drives straight and steers fine and you keep fluids topped off it should be fine. I would make sure that you keep the inside of that torn boot greased up and maybe tape it, if not replace it. The noise your could be hearing when parking or backing up could be your cv axle. Id just keep on driving it and keep up on oil changes and make sure you dont overheat it.

And removing the whole inner fender is very risky as it was very new which about 20yrs old plastics with tiny pins and trust me they do broke or maybe crack on certain parts..
