Just a quick comment about Hulk's personality in this movie: I can't remember where I saw it, maybe in a DVD featurette but they explained that the idea was that he has been conscious now for two years, so he had developed a toddler-like brain that is 2-3 years old, and that is why he speaks and acts like a toddler in this movie.

I still think he's way too flippant for all the terrible things that are happening to him. Thor finds out his father was an evil warlord just before he dies, his friends are slaughtered, he loses his hammer etc., but these events barely phase him at all. The comedic tone feels so jarring and inappropriate for how dark the story is on paper. Infinity War did a much better job of making Thor serious again with just the right amount of levity.

Honestly, I really hate this movie. It ruined Thor and his whole mythology for me by turning everything into a stupid joke. The Ragnarok storyline could've made for a great, epic movie, but they totally destroy it. Thor's friends die, his father dies, his hammer is destroyed, his eye is ripped out and his home is destroyed, but I don't feel any of the emotion because of how overboard they go with the humor. Even Guardians of the Galaxy knew when to take itself seriously.

    • @Howzieky

    • @SolarDragon007

@@Howzieky I know, that's what I'm trying to point out. Infinity War succeeds in portraying Thor's sense of humor as a coping mechanism, but Ragnarok does not. In Infinity War, you get the sense that he's still grieving and suffering from the trauma of what happened, but in Ragnarok, it just comes off like an excuse for dumb jokes. It would've made more sense if he was serious/determined in Ragnarok, (since the stakes are so high), but then used levity in IW to cope with all the losses he suffered.

Not really if you arent a fan of something you generally don't retain any knowledge of it even if you happen to come across it. I mean for example are you a basketball fan? Do you know the NBA playoffs are going on? Another example, I'm not a huge baseball fan, but sometimes I enjoy watching it, but apparently the season is almost halfway done and I just became aware of it yesterday lol. I even have my state's team twitter followed, so I just didn't retain the knowledge despite scrolling past their feeds because it didn't interest me at the time.
MCU may be hugely popular, but compared to how many people there are on Earth ... the vast majority aren't even interested. So in conclusion I bet she has seen spoilers at some point, depending on what she follows and reads, but just never retained the knowledge therefore has no memory of them.

In the previous scene with Loki, Thor sais that there's nothing that can stop Mjolnir from returning to his hand. It's foreshadowing for Hela. You can even see the strap of the hammer pointing toward Thor as if it's pulling back to him.

Hulk has only been "alive"/in the hulk form for a few years if we combine the moments he turned into hulk, so he has the mental development of a child in that regard (which is why he can only say a few words and is always angry).
Now that he's been Hulk for multiple years on this planet, he's developed more, learning basic sentence structure and having a little more control over his emotions. Remember that Hulk is a different entity from Bruce Banner, so his knowledge or skills don't carry over to him.

Something that this movie connected for me, personally, was the parallel between Hella's character and Thor's character from the first movie. When we first met Thor, he was a very one dimensional person. He was a god and a general/ warrior in his own right, and all he wanted to do with that power was conquer--pick fights, even. He saw his purpose or identity in fighting--and winning those fights. Knowing what we know now from Ragnarok, you could say that's why Odin did what he did. Instead of imprisoning Thor away like he did Hella (who embraced her most powerful trait as her sole purpose--wreaking death and destruction), Odin banished Thor in the hopes that he could save his son from the same fate as his first born (not that Odin wasn't culpable in his daughter's descent into crazy-town). I mean, that wasn't where the writers were going with it back in the first movie, but I think it makes a nice tie-in story and character development-wise. Another interesting thing is the affect that Thor has on the characters he meets in Ragnarok. Many of them are purposeless or have also fallen into a rut, relying on old habits or previous ways of thinking, etc. And Thor comes along and starts shaking things up, and the characters around him start shaking off their own...self-imposed exiles in a way, and start living again. Hella, however, is a lost cause because she chooses to be nothing other than power. She doesn't take a moment to step back or compromise or reflect--not really--so she cannot grow as a person and is, instead, merely a driving force. There's nothing else there to get to know because she's whittled her own self down to nothing for the sake of merely having an identity of what she views as her strongest form.

Why do people make such a big point about Thor being “different” - it’s called character development - he’s not walking around as an English dandy, twirling a moustache, he’s just more comedic.
You can see the same character that was in the first two films, but then take into account he’s spent a lot of time on earth with the avengers, & has probably just lightened up. I’m sure Iron Man would rub off on anyone after enough time.

If they didn't make him more comedic then I'm sure people would've been very bored the hell out of. And besides he was slightly comedic in Thor, TTDW, AAOU, and the first Avengers movie. He got more comedic through out the movies. And I'm glad they made him more interesting instead of just making him a serious person all the time.

What I remember from the trailers is that the sequence with Hela shattering the hammer was in what looked like an alleyway. • @scottmcintyre2809

I've heard two stories: one that originally Odin had just been thrown out of the care home when it closed cause they couldn't find his family, they found him living as a bum in New York and Loki had to restore his memories, and one where that scene was never going to be in New York and the ally was always a fake out to play into Thor being in New York in the trailers and the Dr. Strange post-credit scene.
I personally prefer the latter story there. That scene is almost undoubtedly a huge part of why Loki straightened up, overall, in this movie. He'd felt like Odin saw him as unworthy of being his heir ever since he'd found out he was actually Laufy's son (and even before to an extent), as expressed in the first movie when he was shouting about how Odin couldn't have a frost giant on the throne of Asgard, but the fact that Odin broke out of his enchantments and *chose* to stay on Earth, knowing that Loki was on the throne in is absence, probably told Loki everything he needed to know in terms of how Odin really felt about him as a possible successor.

I was floored by that brief awesome scene of Loki fighting on the bridge. So impressive and so cool!
Always been disappointed that I couldn’t see Jen’s reaction. I’ve replayed it many times.
Why anyone would think Skurge was trying to save himself at the end is beyond me. He deliberately went to his death to protect Asgardians - and it’s clear he was pivotal to their escape.
If he’d wanted to save himself, that was about the stupidest possible way to try to pull it off.

They teased Beta Ray Bill in here too, with his statue as one of the "Champions". He's kind of a big deal.
In comics, he defeated Thor in a 1v1 battle to the death, but refused to kill Thor. Odin was so impressed, he gifted Beta Ray with Mjolnir (because worthy) and gave Thor another weapon instead ...which will go nameless right now. Beta Ray Bill and Adam Worlock still on team "hinted but MIA".

The child like is for a reason. Hulk is a whole another conscious. He's been out for 2 years so he's basically learned more and like a 2 year old, starts showing what he knows. Hulk was just getting better. Then got ruined, but I'm not discussing that lol

I think Cate Blanchett's performance as Hela was incredible. Honestly one of my favorite renditions of a character. They just didn't give her anything interesting to do. The typical thin villain. Not entirely a waste, but they really should have recognized what they had there and done something big with it. One of those things where you just bring someone in to do a role, but realize they're absolutely killing it and change up the plan to bring it front and center. They brought her in to do the role, and were like "huh... she's really good. Oh well. Next!"

24:26 nice one, lovely editing touch lmao
Aside from that, I love this movie, I think the dialogue and the chemistry among the characters is its strongest point. Everyone goes through a meaningful arc in the movie. Plus the story is awsome and very impactful. Oh and Korg is a cherry on top, chef’s kiss. The only downside is I think Hela, she was just kinda there, I agree with the points you two made. Overall I’d give it an 8.5/10. It would be a 9, but the *ehm* certain other movies would have to be like 11 or 12s. Way to go Taika Waititi!

Also, do you think Thor's mug of beer refilling is a reference to when he goes to Utgard in the myths and is challenged to chug a drinking horn, but the horn is actually connected to the sea, or am i just looking into it too much?
Its mythology. Of course Thor has many siblings and half siblings

Ragnarok is the prophesized apocalypse by the vikings. It's supposed to play out as the final battle between the gods and the giants. Sworn enemies would end up killing eachother, such as Thor and Jörmungandr(the midgard serpent), Loki and Heimdall, and Vidar and Fenrir. Surtr, the king of Muspelheim and the fire giants(as seen here) would end the battle by plunging his sword deep into the earth and set fire to the entire universe, for it to go dark and be reborn

I love watching the "My Girlfriend Watches" episodes because you both bring great insights, as a person rewatching the movies (Holden) and as a first time watcher (Jen). Holden your facial expressions / eye moves to the camera when Jen says something, or something in the movie foreshadows a future event are awesome and make me chuckle. And finally you include enough of the actual movie footage to catch me up on the movie and it's like I'm rewatching them again along with you. During the press run for the movie. Ruffalo explained that Hulk had the mind of an infant in the previous films bc he didn't have time to develop. Bruce would turn into Hulk for 10, 20, 30 minutes then go back for days, weeks, months on end. Hulk being himself for 2+ years helped that part of his brain develop, and as we saw, that allowed him to evolve into more of a toddler in this film.

The idea behind Hulk in this is supposed to be his intellectual evolution...which he has progressively through each outing. He goes from raging monster hellbent on destruction, to having a bit more sensibility and can now carry on entire conversations. He went from being able to say one liners to full on talking. Kinda like how children progress when they learn to speak. Since Hulk hasn't had any other solo movies since 2008...this was Marvel's way of giving him his own story arc within other films.
