  • In the 1920's, the mob ruled Chicago. Al Capone had lawmen, the police force, and politicians under his thumb, but it was Eliot Ness, a federal agent with the Prohibition Bureau, who became the biggest thorn in Al Capone's side. Along with his band of Untouchables, Ness would make history for his fearless raids on Al Capone's bootlegging operations, earning himself a place in the annals of criminal history.

    Fun fact: After Capone was put away law enforcement had no clue who ran the Chicago mob until the late 70s. Knowing that Capone was such a public figure which was his downfall, Chicago mob leaders did everything they could not to be noticed, stayed out of the limelight, and hid in plain sight. While Capone made his mark in Chicago, don't forget he was run out of New York. Ness also took a lot of heat in Cleveland. While Ness had his theory on who the Butcher was, others believed it was a vagrant. Ness had ordered the evacuation and burning of several shanty towns within the city of Cleveland, which started to turn the public against him. However, Ness believed this move was to help clean up the city. By removing the shanty towns, a lot of the vagrant crime, low level prostitution, and drug crimes went with them as the vagrants went elsewhere. Ness's first divorce, high profile drinking, and a hit-and-run car accident that was looked the other way by authorities signaled the end of his popularity in Cleveland.

    Future Video suggestion -
    Eamon DeValera (1882-1975) - prominent political leader in 20th century Ireland who, after the Irish war of independence from 1919 to 1921, was in the public eye for over forty years from 1922 until his death were he served as head of government (Taoiseach) and head of state (president). He was nearly executed in the Easter Rising in 1916 and was key in putting into place the new constitution on 1937. A very prominent figure in Irish history.

      He's also rumoured to have done some not so nice things like take some funds he got In the USA for the rebellion for himself. And of course that he danced around dealing with the British making Micheal Collins the face for the treaty, making him the guy to blame. Then also that he put out and/or planned the hit on Micheal Collins 100 years ago.

    • @patrickscalia5088
      @patrickscalia5088 ปีที่แล้ว

      DeValera escaped execution alongside Padraic Pearse and the others solely because he held dual citizenship in Ireland and (I believe) Portugal. Incidentally that's where his very not-Irish last name came from. I might be getting some details wrong but I believe his father was a Portuguese diplomat or other official and that meant the British couldn't execute deValera without causing an international spat. So they sent him to prison instead. All the rest were shot and buried in a grave full of quicklime to make sure the bodies were destroyed and could not be disinterred and put into a martyr's monument.

    Hey Simon, I was thinking since you have already done a video about the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II you could perhaps do a video about Princess Anne? I think she’s by far the most interesting member of the royal family, and has committed her life to serving others through her many charities, only to have much of it overshadowed by her reputation with the media and her then sister in law Diana getting all the praise. She’s done so much from competing in the Olympics to working sometimes over 500 events in a year. Perhaps you could even do a small introduction with some personal thoughts about Queen Elizabeth at the start of the video?

    Al Capone was basically told to cut out the same level of violence that he did at the St Valentine's Day Massacre at the Atlantic City Conference. Luciano and company hated the bad publicity. So, that's probably why Capone didn't try to be as heavy-handed with Ness.
    Capone was largely tolerated by the East Coast Mob, not seen as an equal. Nucky Thompson apparently got pissed at Capone for making a scene over a mix up at his hotel where Capone's rooms were cancelled when he arrived in Atlantic City for the conference.
    Thompson was said to have man handles Capone, grabbing him by the arm and said, " YOU FUCKERS COME WITH ME NOW!"

    You never talked about his "burial"! Because there was concerns about his body being tampered with, he was cremated and the ashes scattered at a pond in the historic Lakeview Cemetery. He's right next to the Garfield Memorial.

    Hey Simon! Back again with another suggestion. Still appreciate you doing one on Kennecott copper mine and John Moses Browning with his 1911. My suggestion for today is a video on the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and how he went from an actor and comedian to a modern Churchill.

    • @FingerPuppetSarcasm
      @FingerPuppetSarcasm ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine most documentary ideas on Zelensky are waiting for the war to be over so they can include all of the struggle and accomplishments he hasn't even endured yet.

    • @Vidhur
      @Vidhur ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think calling him a "modern Churchill" is more than a bit over the top... The similarities end after you account for military failures and abolishment of opposition parties. Zelensky is not at all as eloquent or diplomatically gifted as Churchill was. Besides him being propped up by the western media establishment, he's not much of an actor or let alone statesman.

      @@CuriousMindTH-cam Ukraine has been oppressing minorities in the Donbas since well before the occupation of Crimea or the Ukrainian civil war, Zelensky is a part of that oppressive machine, he didn't stop it, so if anything, that's an *actual* comparison. The propaganda shield defending from criticism on their human rights abuses and the laughable praise of them both being "democratic" are the main things they have in common. In every other regard, Churchill was a much more talented man than Zelensky is.

    I'd think the main problem with the war against illegal brewing, is that so few people wanted prohibition. You can only really enforce a law if most people WANT it. "I want a drink, but the only guy who can provide the beer is a gangster? Suddenly he's my mate and i'm going to close my eyes to all the other stuff". Bloody stupid idea, like criminalising drugs. And before anyone says anything, I've seen first hand what drugs do. It's just that if it's illegal, it's worse.

    I’m wondering if you all would ever be willing to do one on Governor George Wallace? I think his trip from moderate to the face of segregation, his presidential campaign and assassination attempt, all the way back to moderate is an interesting story. Just how chasing the vote and populism can change someone for the worse.

    Elliott Ness was a pencil pusher. His run-in with Capone and his untouchables story is more fictional than anything else. In his later years, he decided to sell a fictional story of his prohibition days.

    The main reason no one was caught was because elliot ness always told reports before the raid so they could gain fame so capone got tips off the reporters
    Just an interesting fact that shows how much fame can be gained over time just due to rumors
