It’s worth noting to that in the final years of the Wild West show Buffalo Bill found himself resting after a show and has a pleasant interaction with a young 5 year old boy. That boy was Walt Disney. The Wild West show is said to have some inspiration in what became Disneyland

The Wild West "craze" was one heck of a phenomenon from what I've read. Might we get a video at some future date discussing why Europeans were so enthusiastic about folks like Buffalo Bill? I've read some differing opinions that say most of the hype came from those dime-novel adventures - but there's also Karl May, a German author who wrote quite a few adventure novels set in the Wild West...though he apparently never once set foot in America! Makes me wonder a little bit about the guy, and whether his books influenced only the German-speaking parts of Europe, or maybe just contributed to an overall effect.

Good Lord! I can't believe you mentioned the Great Buffalo Hunt of Grand Duke Alexis! The main campsite is basically just over the hill from what would later be the farm my mother was born on in 1935. I've been to the marker several times in my youth during the '70s and very early '80s.
I made friends with a local farmer, the same age as my grandparents, who loved nothing more than to take Boy Scout troops to it. And regale tales of his father and the hunt. His father was one of the locals hired on a scouts. His name is on the marker. Along with Buffalo Bill's, General Sheridan, Col. George A. Custer and several of the well know Sioux cheifs who were in attendance to help with the hunt and to put on a show for the Grand Duke.
You just never hear anything about this hunt outside of the local history.
This was northeast of Hayes Center, Nebraska located in the southwest corner of the state. The local news paper was the Hayes Center Times Republican but l have no idea if it still exists. It was a weekly newspaper and l imagine it died out in the '90s like so many small town papers did.
    Thanks for mentioning the event!

Buffalo Bill was a great American hero. I've lived in Cody, Wyoming. The town he started, my dog's name is Cody. I've visited his grave multiple times. He was a showman who also lived it. Stood up for native rights. He's my favorite American!

Eamon DeValera (1882-1975) - prominent political leader in 20th century Ireland who, after the Irish war of independence from 1919 to 1921, was in the public eye for over forty years from 1922 until his death were he served as head of government (Taoiseach) and head of state (president). He was nearly executed in the Easter Rising in 1916 and was key in putting into place the new constitution on 1937. A very prominent figure in Irish history.

An interesting point, when Bill died it was too cold to bury him as the ground was frozen and the road to Lookout mountain, his would-be grave, overlooking Golden Colorado was impassable. As a result, a local funeral home in Denver, Olinger’s, kept his body on ice for several months until he could be buried. That same funeral home is now a restaurant. Also worthy of note, many believe Cody’s body was stolen and buried near Cody Wyoming, the town he helped found, and to this day there is a sort of (mostly lighthearted) contention between Golden CO and Cody WY about which location his body is buried in. (It’s Colorado, he had a glass top casket, pictures taken of his body and funeral and his closest friends and family and hundreds of other people saw him in his forever box at the funeral)

I live in northern Alberta Canada. We have the largest wild buffalo herds in North America. But fun fact they all came from buffalo bill!!!!! Buffalo were nearly killed off by white settlers in Canada and America (as we all know). So major conservation efforts were made at the turn of the century to save the last remaining wild buffalo. Sadly a buffalo pandemic raged through alberta killing all the wild buffalo. Buffalo bill stepped in and helped restore the once native populations. 😊😊😊 I lam be outside elk island national park in Edmonton where wild buffalo roam free and to the north in woodland buffalo park there are hundreds of buffalo now roaming the forests thanks to buffalo bill

This is an interesting channel for history. Another view always interesting. The Wild West, Buffalo Bull. We must never forget the genocide of our Native American Indians in the beginning for quest for more lands here in America and slavery of African people. It is complicated. I love history and read many books on history on all sides. Another great book, although non-fiction by McCarthy, "Blood Meridian " that one will make one think about the west and its horrors. Wild Bill Buffalo, he was in the mist of the Wild West, a figure one can not leave out whether one agrees or disagrees, it was the sign of the times. Even General Custer, and the Trail of Tears. American history one must understand all sides. Thank you. ❤️
