My mom had a Bloodhound named Claude. He was a drool factory. And a fart factory. And didn't mind being used as a pillow, which came with its own risks. He was a great dog but a real handful, needing a good long hike several times a week and two long walks on the off days , and saying "bull in a china shop" is a very accurate analogy. Big, sweet, drooling, farting, gentle soul who could clear a table in one wag and also learned how to open the refrigerator.
Near where I lived in England in the 1980s, there was a bloodhound club that had regular events - where the owners would have a 6 hour (or something like that) start to run and hide. One evening at the pub, I talked with one of the club members, fresh back from being hunted. She said it was always a bit scary at the end when you hear the hound coming for you -- no matter how high up in the tree you may have climbed...

Your video made me smile. I've also been grooming dogs for almost 20 yrs. At one point we had 5 bloodhounds and a lab. So I had plenty of test subjects. Final results.....Ultimate Unleashed 65:1 shampoo by groomers edge works the best and keeps hounds smelling good for 2 to 3 weeks depending on their activity. My non working hound was good for 3 weeks. Working boys, usually 2 weeks. The key is not diluting the 65:1, but about a 16:1 instead. Making sure to scrub like crazy on the neck, the flap that is there the ears and up under the ears and sides of face very very good. That holds all the smell. And making sure its 100% dry afterwards. Then if you get a rubber brush, I'm sure you probably already have one. Wow, you put so much work into this, and clearly for a reason! Out of curiosity, does retaining a scent from a good shampoo and grooming like what you described for 2-3 weeks affect their tracking ability for that period of time?
Our last Bloodhound (Boomer's Bad Boy or BB for short) weighed 153 lbs. He was not overweight, he was just that big. Bloodhounds love water, so having a small pool for them to soak in during the summer is a must. BB would go swimming in the lake just across the road from us whenever he got out. They are also escape artists and will easily climb a 4 foot fence. They really hate having their feet messed with but love to be brushed and have their ears cleaned.
My bloodhound was a literal kangaroo, in his youth he could jump and get his head over our 6ft fence. The jumping and his howling paired made for quite the “intimidating” guard dog and scared our neighbors a bit. But he was actually a giant teddy bear
This reminds me so much of my sweet Hound, Possum. (Yes, we named him Possum, lol) He would howl and "sing" for us every single day. He was an amazing and unforgettable part of our family!
I have a bloodhound named wrinkles and some times he will jump up on me to give a hug, but usually when he sees anyone he starts sniffing them out. Also smart enough to scratch on the door for when he wants out
Short-haired dogs seem to shed constantly. We've had an English Lab/Mastiff mix and now a Belgian Malinois, and both of them have seemed to shed far more than our Border Collie/English Springer Spaniel/Shetland Sheepdog mix.
Reminds me of the bloodhound my dad had for missing persons work (police). She was so headstrong and really not interested in being a "good dog" - we chalked if off to the fact that we couldn't really obedience train her since she had to be able to make up her own mind while searching. And your comment about them needing a fenced-in yard made me chuckle - she was a NOTORIOUS escapee! So glad you shared this video, took me on a nice walk down memory lane, thinking about that little love brat :p
Balance training is the best for any dog but especially stubborn hounds. I have 8 hounds and 1 of them is a bloodhound mix and using balance training people mistake her as a service dog and using balance training using e collars you can have any dog breed off leash. I should know having beagles, Bassets hound, a Treeing Walker, Bloodhound mix and dachshund who can all be off leash anywhere. Took my bloodhound mix off leash to a beach thanks to proper E-collar training.
There are two kinds of intelligence that dogs have. The first is where the dog quickly learns tricks and what not. The second, which most hounds have, is where they look at you as if to suggest that you go do it yourself.
Very interesting to learn more about this amazing breed! I love how you always include educational parts in your videos. Also, such a cute and gentle pup 😍
I have a bloodhound. He’s absolutely a bull in a china shop. Their ears are freaking adorable and they get sooo dirty. He makes me laugh every single day though. To get hound to howl takes very little… just hum or sing.. he likes to join the chorus. He taught my quiet boxer/dane to howl. Music in my house has become a group event. Haha
Aww I had a boxer who was a bad ass scent finder. Alas one day he was SOOO INTO his sniffer, he didnt see the telephone poll and ran smack into it!. No worries though he was fine and got lots of kisses Bubba rip I miss you friend. ❤️
I'm owned by 2 bloodhounds, 8 and 6 years old, both rescues. My female looks like Vino and my male is red w/black nose. They are goofy, high-energy dogs that go on a sniffari daily to keep them in shape and tired because a tired bloodhound is a happy bloodhound.
I have a Basset Hound, not a Bloodhound, but I think a lot of the traits are similar. Very affectionate and friendly, but sheds constantly and won't listen to a word I say if she's sniffing. Vino basically looks like a giant version of my dog! I love hounds :)
Oh, one of my favorite parts of grooms is when ears get cleaned. The way dogs gratefully lean into the clean because it feels so good and is so relieving really makes grooming totally worth it.
I love bloodhounds. Have rescued quite a few. The number 1 thing to know about all hounds is that the nose rules. They will follow the nose before they follow you!
Vino did so well! She is such a pretty dog, and so is Ellie! As for Susan's suggestion - a book on the dogs, cats, animals in Happy Hoodies and your scarves - YES!!!
One of my favorite animal videos involves a bloodhound tracking down an escapee and not even hiding in a muddy bog stops him from the guy. The whole time after the capture the dog is licking the escapee happily and the guy can't stop laughing in spite of the situation. That is how the bloodhound do.
I've always thought bloodhounds were adorable, but then I read the book "Bloodhound" by Tamora Pierce and the scent hound in that book is just. so. precious. So of course I went on a research binge and now every time I see a bloodhound I get emotional. Lookit her feets!!! her big ol ears!!! floppy droopy lady of the house!!!!! I want to hug her!!
As an owner of not only a blood but also 2 American fox hounds, a fenced yard, martingale collars and lots of exercise are definitely required! But, they are the cutest, funniest and gentlest of any dog I've ever had.
Vino is adorable. I love it when people have the less common/popular dogs and we get to see them. When you sprayed her with bubble gum cologne, I wondered if she was going to spend the rest of the day looking for Hubba Bubba.
You can put as much footage of her flapping jowls as you want, I still gotta say that's a beautiful hound right there. What a lovely temperament too, you can tell just by looking what a gentle soul they have.
If only every dog was so chill during grooming, great job Vino👏 And am surprised to learn they've got a lifespan of 11 to 15 yrs! A bit longer than a lot of big dogs
What a sweetie. I do wish there was a little cuddle session at the end of these videos. Maybe I'm weird. I just like to see animals get the cuddles. Great video.
It's a bit like being the parent of an infant--after a grooming session, many dogs are "touched out" for awhile. They've had enough of being still and being touched all over. Keep in mind that while the videos are 5 to 10 minutes, the actual grooming time is more like 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the dog. That's a lot of time to stand still and be fondled all over by a stranger. I love that Vanessa often lets the dogs out in her yard so they can move around freely and get rid of some of the pent up energy.
Ahh one who looks just like my big fella! He's crossed with a foxhound, so I get all the squishy loveable good points - without the drool. I'm lucky to live where he can be off lead, because, yeah when that nose goes down his listening circuits definitely get rerouted! 🤣🤣🤣
We had Dante, a liver and tan bloodhound, for just over eight years, until late 2021 when his hips sadly more or less gave in (at least here in Europe, I'd say that the typical life expectancy is not over 10 years; might be due to them perhaps being slightly larger in size and certainly with even more droopy skin). I can attest to Dante having been quite smart, though he didn't look it - and when outside among all those lovely scents, forget about trying any sort of obedience, as anything that works just fine in a controlled environment indoors, will not work when there is even a slightly interesting scent to pick up outside. They are simply impressive at tracking people and really require no training to excel at that (though the owner would do with learning to read the hound - and to be able to physically steer it off of any danger that they otherwise would simply run into). Despite their size - Dante was just over 100 pounds but actually not large for a male - they are completely gentle in mind and manner. But, they do not appreciate their own size, so can be the proverbial elephant in the china shop and their big tails easily clear a table. I really miss Dante, but am grateful that I had the chance of having had such a fantastic hound as my friend. Lovely to see Vino and recognise the behaviour, including being a big sulk when it comes to clipping the nails... A word of advice is however due here - bloodhounds are very strong and when they find an interesting scent they want to follow, they will always go for it. As an owner, you have to be able to physically stop them when necessary. That heavy duty walking experience four times (3-4 hrs) a day will take a toll on your arms and back, especially if you are not much heavier than the hound (which I am, but still).
something like 7-10 years is average, they are not long lived dogs. Not sure where the "10-15" figure came from. Every source I've read has them at an average life expectancy of around 8 years. Which is a shame because like most scent hounds they are sweet dogs.
The family dogs when I was a kid were 2 beagles. We referred to them as freight trains when we walked them because, like you said, it is necessary to physically stop them from pursuing a scent sometimes. I couldn't imagine doing the same for a pair of bloodhounds or even just 1 lol. That indeed would be hard on the back!
@@telegramsam Dante, like just about all his kin, was keen to keep his distance (of about all of three feet...) but would invariably come barging in through (yes - through!) the bedroom door every morning, just to check up on his pack, which also could involve a somewhat indiscreet sniff to one's nose. They hardly come more gentle and caring, though it takes getting to know one to really realise the extent of it.
Thank you for these entertaining educational videos. Thanks to you, I now groom my catahoula leopard dog with the equi-groomer and it manages the shedding so well.
Vino and Ellie are both gorgeous girls. So elegant and chic, and they pose like the queens that they are.
Yeah, my bloodhound, Clyde, is 140 lbs. Same deal, he’s just a pony.
My bloodhound was a literal kangaroo, in his youth he could jump and get his head over our 6ft fence. The jumping and his howling paired made for quite the “intimidating” guard dog and scared our neighbors a bit. But he was actually a giant teddy bear
My female is 130 and not overweight at all. I completely agree with this lady that a bloodhound is no dog for a beginner.
This is wild 🤣 I just can't picture one of these hopping a fence ! Awesome bit of information thank you 😁😅
Yeah when she said "up to 110 lbs" I was like, hang on...... lol :D
The slow mo of the ears and jowls❤️
This reminds me so much of my sweet Hound, Possum. (Yes, we named him Possum, lol)
He would howl and "sing" for us every single day. He was an amazing and unforgettable part of our family!
I have a bloodhound named wrinkles and some times he will jump up on me to give a hug, but usually when he sees anyone he starts sniffing them out. Also smart enough to scratch on the door for when he wants out
Wow, for a short haired dog, she sheds a LOT. Thanks for the slow motion blow-dry section. It was appreciated ♥️
Short-haired dogs seem to shed constantly. We've had an English Lab/Mastiff mix and now a Belgian Malinois, and both of them have seemed to shed far more than our Border Collie/English Springer Spaniel/Shetland Sheepdog mix.
They shed all the time but never need grooming unless they get real dirty
Always amazed at how much fur flies on a daily basis off my two short haired dogs!
My bloodhounds and basset are MASSIVE shedders!!! But I love them dearly and will happily put up with it!
Awwhhh, did you notice how at 1:35 she says: „let me sniff you sympathetic groomer girl?“ 🥰
At 1:34 Vino decides to have a serious one on one conference with Vanessa about the loud scary monster machine. 😂
Looked like he checked out her happy hoodie ;)
What is it about a hound dog? What a good girl!!
I think they where designed to kiss and snuggle 😁😁😁💖💖💖💖
Very interesting to learn more about this amazing breed! I love how you always include educational parts in your videos. Also, such a cute and gentle pup 😍
I knw right, I love that part of these videos, she's deff my fav
I LOLed at her bulging eyes when getting the Happy Hoodie, and at the flapping lip blow dry. Too cute! Ellie is gorgeous, too.
The eyes were my favorite part too! : )
No worries though he was fine and got lots of kisses
Bubba rip I miss you friend. ❤️
Watching so many steamed hams videos I immediately thought about an unforgettable luncheon!
She's too good of a girl to howl inside! ❤️
I have a Basset Hound, not a Bloodhound, but I think a lot of the traits are similar. Very affectionate and friendly, but sheds constantly and won't listen to a word I say if she's sniffing. Vino basically looks like a giant version of my dog! I love hounds :)
basset hounds and blood hounds were developed from a lot of the same bloodlines and ancestral breeds so yes they are very similar
Beagle owner and same!!
Oh, one of my favorite parts of grooms is when ears get cleaned. The way dogs gratefully lean into the clean because it feels so good and is so relieving really makes grooming totally worth it.
Oh the drool, especially after having a drink of water! Their tails are pretty powerful too, cleaving Christmas ornaments in half.
I love bloodhounds. Laid back, affectionate, and I adore their long ears and droopy eyes. SO underrated:)
Vino: I am always a good dog. Are you a good human?
I love how she got in your face like what did u put on our heads 🤣
She’s beautiful. I suspect those pendulous ears would require a lot of maintenance to keep infections at bay. Totally worth it though.
I love bloodhounds. Have rescued quite a few. The number 1 thing to know about all hounds is that the nose rules. They will follow the nose before they follow you!
2:57 was heartbreaking for my doge. He never reacts to dogs barking in videos, but as soon as he hears whining, he bolts up for the rescue
Vino did so well! She is such a pretty dog, and so is Ellie! As for Susan's suggestion - a book on the dogs, cats, animals in Happy Hoodies and your scarves - YES!!!
How about a fundraising Calendar, instead?
One of my favorite animal videos involves a bloodhound tracking down an escapee and not even hiding in a muddy bog stops him from the guy. The whole time after the capture the dog is licking the escapee happily and the guy can't stop laughing in spite of the situation. That is how the bloodhound do.
😭😭😭 So cute 😍 💕 I can't handle it (the baroque music during the slowmo 😂😂) She's also such a good girl
2:20 happiest he’s ever been
She** (sry to be that guy) just sayin
That floppy face with air dryer applied to it was just perfect.
Aaaaaiint nothin but a hound dowg!..😂❤️🎵🎵🐾🐾🤎🤎🤎
I love the slow motion blow drying set to classical music 😂 Fantastic. Such a cutie!
Bless you for doing a slow-mo section of her getting her face dried! It definitely made my evening!🤣🤣🤣
She obviously enjoyed every bit of ear action you gave her. But I laughed way too hard at the face drying, lol
You can put as much footage of her flapping jowls as you want, I still gotta say that's a beautiful hound right there. What a lovely temperament too, you can tell just by looking what a gentle soul they have.
Too funny, the piano music with the slow mo
I did not expect that much shedding! The Irish setter was beautiful too
Absolutely beautiful hound!
I once actually helped train some bloodhounds for search and rescue. It was a cool experience hiding in woods waiting for them
Sweet, sweet girl.
We have an old Beagle, I love playing with his ears
Vino is a gorgeous blood hound and she was very well-behaved!! A very sweet girl!! ❤❤❤
If only every dog was so chill during grooming, great job Vino👏 And am surprised to learn they've got a lifespan of 11 to 15 yrs! A bit longer than a lot of big dogs
What a sweet girl!! We were blessed with a bloodhound lab for 12 years and he was a wonderful handful!! He howled at the coffee grinder😂. 💝
As one does. lol
She is very even-tempered-seeming girl, and has a very sweet howl. It'd be a delight to own one, if I had a big ol' backyard.
What a sweetie. I do wish there was a little cuddle session at the end of these videos. Maybe I'm weird. I just like to see animals get the cuddles. Great video.
Me too
same here too, its the happy feels i get when I see a fur babies get cuddled. (has a jackie and she lives for cuddles...and her chicken nugget toy) 🐾
She does sometimes! But not every dog is into cuddling with a stranger.
@@GrainneDhu makes sense
When you put the happy hoodie on her, it’s like she was checking to make sure you had one on too 😂
I love that you always squeeze in some facts about the breeds you're working on!
Ahh one who looks just like my big fella! He's crossed with a foxhound, so I get all the squishy loveable good points - without the drool. I'm lucky to live where he can be off lead, because, yeah when that nose goes down his listening circuits definitely get rerouted! 🤣🤣🤣
A Bloodhound in a happy hoodie... thats my laugh for today!
I was waiting for that.
Thank you for sharing them with us, and thanks as always for your insight/information on each of the breeds that you're so fortunate to groom. You do them all great justice with your affection and care. 🙂
I didn't realize they were so big! Cute Pupper! Luv the flappity lips...lol! ❤❤❤💋
She's got velvety ears. SOOOOO Soft !! Sweet Doggie Dog !! Woof Woof !!
Love that you showed us a Bloodhound!
