  • In this video I use multiple methods to treat a mealybug infestation. Tips on how to find, treat and avoid this situation. Mealy bugs are small white bugs that usually live on the underside of leaves which makes it hard to discover the infestation until its too late. In this video I will show you a quick remedy to get rid of them that shouldn't require a trip to the store!

I remember hearing somewhere that the better way to deal with the melee bugs is to challenge them to a melee. In the octagon. Man vs bug. And apparently it makes Gladiator look like toddlers wrestling.

    Another great video!
I also have few tips I have with Mealybugs, after fighting them for 3 years, I'm not worried about them at all now:
    1. make sure you look at the stem of your plant, especially the main stem, the folding of the plant, etc. I usually just use a cotton patch soaked with rubbing alcohol solution and run it very thoroughly.
    2. water like a table spoon of alcohol solution underneath the main stem, just a little bit, if your plants are big enough(like fiddle-leaf figs). Because eggs might be hiding in the soil as well. I think it's worth it in the long run even with the risk of damaging the root system. Never do that to a small plant cuz it might completely ruin your root system.
    3. never use Miracle-gro soils!!! I've had Mealy bugs, fungus gnats, whiteflies(those are nastiest in my pov) so far, their soil are just so infested.
    4. another fun fact about mealy bugs I found is that, they're extremely heat/drought tolerant. I accidentally left my plant in my office with the heat running at max for 4 days. The heat killed 2 out of 3 plants but didn't kill the eggs...

I would mention don’t spray your plant when it’s sitting in the direct sunlight because you could burn it and possibly rinse it off after you spray it and wait a little while

i understand with the whole you dont notice until its too late, i brought this bonsai tree and little did i know that it had flys and the next thing ik my room was filled with tiny flys. Thankfully i was able to get rid of them but it was a bit hard since it had spread over to my other plants

Omg! You got me at the burning part! I literally closed my eyes, because my mint had so many on it and I’ve been through too much with my mint so no I don’t want to get rid of it.

I've been using straight up alcohol with a tiny paint brush, have seen only a couple of them on various plants. But now I will dilute the alcohol. I don't think I have ever seen so many mealy bugs on a single plant like yours. Good luck!

thank you for this. i have a couple questions:
    1) do mealy bugs hurt humans (toddlers/babies) if baby touches plant with mealy big infestation??
    2) where do mealy bugs come from?
i’m dealing with mealy bugs on so far four of my plants 😭

      @TechplantChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

They come from outside or from other infected plants. They will not harm people. Treat them with alchohol or neam oil, there are some organic sprays that will get rid of them too.

Ugh. These like to hitch a ride on big box store plants. I bought a trailing jade from Lowe’s and it was infested. Thankfully I literally quarantine ALL new plants away from my healthy collection. I watch them for a good 2 weeks and treat them EVEN if I don’t SEE anything on the leaves or roots. I DO pot them up in their new homes but I just keep em separated to be sure I got them all before adding them to the horde of healthy plants on my porch.

What kind of microscope or magnifier do you use in this video? I have had microscopic Mealybugs and microscopic spider mites . They could not be seen without a USB microscope. But I HATE the microscope. It’s too hard to look at an entire plant with it and I don’t wanna take leaves off to check my succulents for bugs . I need something I can look at the plant with as a whole . The one I have now has a short gooseneck stand that suctions onto a surface. It’s hard to focus and the suction fails all the time . It’s knocked over many plants this way . Thanks for the video 😊

There is a such thing as soil mealy bugs, but i think its a different species all together. Ive never dealt with them so i would consult google for that information because i dont know what to do in that case

Spraying alcohol doesn't work because they live in the soil. The alcohol will kill the ones you see, but doesn't bother the ones you don't.

    • @TechplantChannel

i usually watch it for a while to kill any i missed the first day
but other than root mealybugs these really spend most of their time on the plant

Arghhhh I wish I knew this before I tossed my plants. I blamed these little roses I got for Mother’s Day as the infesters. Well, that plant was near my friggen mango tree. I read somewhere to add some spice to a water bottle and spray. I destroyed my mango tree. But it makes sense what you said. The leaves did have this sticky substance on it. I threw out 6 plants that day. I will now know this trick god forbid I go through that again.

Get some beneficial insects. Cryptolaemus montrouzieri will consume mealybugs and their larvae. You can buy them from beneficial insect suppliers. They will actually work better if you have a bad infestation and will stay with the plant chomping those mealies. Good luck!
