I am faced doing the upper control arm bushings on a Dodge 1 ton van that is a lot like the GM unit with the bar going through only a lot heavier built. You did the job in a similar manner that I do it. Guess there ain't a good way around the mess. Thanks for the video.
great pratical vid showing the kids how it's done. that's exactly how i replaced the bushings in the last set i did for a 75 caddillac cc hearse. well done guys.
Great video. Now I need to borrow your press and your buddy to help me. I have a ride tech system my professional suspension guy screwed up so I'm trying to correct it with plumbing tools. Thanks for the video
If you want to save your shaft you can hammer a chisel under the lip of the flush bushing on the upper control arm on the half of it where there's a slight gap. An air chisel would work too unless you don't want to scuff the control arm at all
Thanks for the video it was very detailed and like you said in the beginning everybody else supposedly shows you how to do it but when they take it out all of a sudden is back in there and I'm like what the hell how you do it but I was debating if I was going to do this myself since I can do this kind of stuff but the only thing that I'm lacking on is the torch and the Press so I guess I'm going the easy route but expensive so yes I'm buying a new control arms thanks for the video
My van was low on one side. I had weight on the passenger side. The vehicle went down with the weight. But when I removed the weight, the van stayed down. The upper control bushings had froze and stuck. Not allowing the shock to push it up.
Man! I was thinking it would be a simple replacement. Lol. I was wrong. It seems like you need a full shop with tools and hard labor time to change those bushings. 😭
Do you guys know what size bolts/part number are used for the cross shaft? Any kind of help would be appreciated in tracking these down. Mine are rusted stuck and need to replace but no kits come with them
It won't ruin it's temper if you let it air cool & don't throw water on it to cool it off! THIS only applies to steel parts ! Don't attempt this on aluminium A arms!
Pushing the uppers out with an air hammer would have been much easier. It's easier to push em in with the end bolt nuts and washers and an air hammer too...no smoke wrench required.
Back before I had a garage full of tools to use. I'd just drill out the rubber with a large bit then collapse the shell in on its self with the air hammer and 9/10 tines the pop right out. Then I would use a 5lb hammer with a socket over the new one a block of wood and go full on Neanderthal on it haha
Ya why rent a free press kit when you can take a dangerous blow torch and light your suspension on fire and drip burning rubber everywhere. You guys need some brain help!!!!
Thanks, one of the only videos that shows you how to do a set of UCA bushings that are of the old crossbar style.
Nice work with the Flame Wrench! Good work gentlemen.
Well this is inspiring I'm doing my 74 monte carlo and installing air bags ,watching this i now know I'm in for a lot of fun😂
Thanks guy, this really helped me on my 71 B Body Buick LeSabre.

Oof, how did it go?
Thanks for the info. The angle iron support was awesome. My 80 camaro handles so much better now.
Wow that’s the hard way to do this job and not the healthiest breathing in those toxic fumes.
Air hammer/chisel is your friend. Shit happens quick...lol.
Shit happens very quick!

Seen a old school video where they used large drill bit to drill holes in the rubber and it came out
Great video, very instructional.
Hi. You can also use a thin rotozip bit to remove the rubber.
I went down to Autozone and rented their bushing presser. Only took 30 minutes and I was able to leave the A arm connected to the ball joint.
How did you contend with the cross bar? The parts store tool kit has nothing slotted to fit over the cross bar to hold a backup for the pressing!
@@trailerparkcryptoking5213 Hmm. The tool kit I rented did have one. Maybe the last renter kept it.
Hack work. If you had an air hammer you could do the job much faster with less destroyed/ruined parts.
After watching this you just buy the whole upper control assembly
That used to be front end shop's bread and butter. Thanks for the video.
Where do you get those type of bushings that come in the separable style .. all the ones i see are molded into the shell..????
Great video. Is there a way of removing the control arm shaft with out destroying the bushing?
Use an air hammer with a sharp tip
@@medicineman1202 ok thanks for the reply
I do the cold chisel method and you don't even need to remove the rubber first.
When bushings are worn-out could that result in the car hanging on one side lower?

good job guys!!!

I was wondering about the effect of the heat on the control arm myself.
The heat was placed on a bushing shell that was replaced.

@@Oldsmob455 can bad bushing cause a bumpy ride?
Upper or lower? Thanks
You don't need to burn the rubber out. Just use air hammer/chisel to dent in the shells.
Air hammer knock those put super fast
Great video.

How the hell did u get the bone out first???
I know this is an old video but FYI:
A master kit balljoint press works much faster
Just got to the part where you used the balljoint press lol. But the master kit makes it to where you dont even have to get the rubber out first.
how much is one of those impact wrenches, what brand?
Thank you.
Use a hole saw to extract the bad rubber much easier cleaner
Lord Jesus, there has to be an easier way. Lmao.
Yes there is, just buy the whole control arm like I did last week!
@@rickynunez7367 Same here. Got both lowers for about $80 shipped.
@@adamwhitt9349 yes!! Got my upper for about the same @rockauto!! Nice man!!
Hire it done! Nothing gets hurt but your wallet. Still cheaper than an emergency room trip
Would you know the dimensions of the sheet metal used so the control arm wouldn't collapse?
We used 2" angle iron and cut it to length
That's funny that you have all those tools at your disposal. How about showing how its done with limited tools. Cutting torch? Lol.
So you don't have a press but you would have a cutting torch
Who said we didn't have a press?
But why?
All I need is the press!!😢
That is the most backwards asinine method i have ever seen
Obviously you have never done the job before
Can you guys just do mine for me? :(
Dont you know that the torch destroys the strength of the shaft if you want to use it again
How not to do it
Ok
Red energy suspensión anything are garbage... the rot apart

Have fun bending the crap out of your control arms.
what a shitty design
Not proper job.....
Sounds like a comment from an arm chair mechanic.
