It’s not just Americans that get British tea wrong. I was at a motorway service area having a cup of tea when a family who, judging by their accents, came from an island a few miles to the west of Great Britain, sat at the table next to me. Having settled themselves they proceeded to drink their tea straight from the tea pots !
Back in the late 90's and early 2000's when I was in my late teens and early 20's there were a lot more public phone boxes around and they always smelt like urine because drunk people would often use them as a public convenience when the bladder was full and no other options were available.
If you want to "tip" bar staff the norm is to ask them if they would like a drink. If they say yes they will charge you for whatever drink and take the money/ drink after closing up time.
Oh Mandy. Your pub tipping story reminds me of meeting a business associate from the US when she visited the UK for the first time in a pub. She went and ordered our drinks at the bar and came back with them shortly after only to be followed by the bar lady handing her the £2 coin she'd left on the bar. My US associate whispered to me 'oh you don't tip bar staff here'! 😄
Apart from it being a telephone _box_ (booth is far too posh a word for what is basically a urinal), I think any native could have made those mistakes - oh, wait, not the tea strainer one; that's really funny.
Believe me 99% of Brits wouldn't know how use the tea strainer thing either. It's a bygone era. Most people use teabags these days. When I was a lad (talking 1950s here), most people used loose leaf tea and just let the odd leaf or two pour into their cup. You were careful at the end of the cup to not ingest any of the leaves. Never a problem.
The way to tip a barman in the UK (I am told: I've never done it myself) is to say at the end of your order: "And have one for yourself?" And they will most probably say "Thank you, sir or madam, I have one for later on." And take add the price of his virtual beer to your bill. No, I don't get why this is more acceptable.
Down here in Kent where she lives. platform markers for the drivers state. 4 car stop, 8 car stop, 10 car stop etc. So her calling them cars is not a mistake.
I don’t think any of those things are bad. Most British people today would not know how to prepare and drink proper tea today. We just bung a tea bad in a mug now. And the train carriage thing is some thing we will all have done once or twice.
On the rare occasions that I use loose leaf tea instead of bags, I usually dig out the tea strainer to stop leaves getting into my cup. It's convenient to have somewhere to put the wet strainer afterwards, so I'll maybe use a saucer, or another cup, or a tray. I mean, what else are you going to do with it?

Ok-I can say with 100% certainty that I have never seen or done that. I feel better.

Haha-wow…reminds me of peeing on the side of the road when I was that age! 🤪

Glad you enjoyed it.
Very few British people know how to use a tea strainer
Most barmen will put a tip like that in the charity box
The train was just funny
Thanks. ☺️

The lack of telephone booths in the US must give Clark Kent/Superman cause for concern.
😆 maybe that’s why crime is up

Don't worry, Mandy. No-one will judge you.
🤣
Oh yes we will; deeply, with feeling and, above all... silently.
Mistakes are how you learn, sure most brits wouldn't lead you too far astray.
Trains over here have Carriages not Cars !

@@grahamsmith9541 To be honest it's been some years since I've travelled by rail, so perhaps the term car is now the correct word.
If you want to tip a bar person, just say "and one for yourself". They shouldn't take offence and will just take a few bob, and Bob's your uncle.
Thank you. I’m gonna try this and see how it goes.
Telephone BOX not booth !
Train CARRIAGE not car !
Why are you so angry?
@@TheHicksonDiaries ignore them, you're a human, we all make mistakes. We don't have a problem with you

😥 that makes me feel better. Thx
I tip taxi drivers and hairdressers only. I am English.
lol
Thx
But we do tip
I don’t think I said there was no tipping
Lol almost nobody would k ow what to do with that little cup. Tea like that is only for the pretentious and tourists, mostly tourists
Really?? That makes me feel a bit better
