I would not say that we are a miserable people but I do think that we are a people who are realistic with real expectations, rather than living in some ethereal universe that does not exist. Al Murray, the comedian, summed it up for me when he said that 'Americans are dreamers, but the British are not because we are awake.' We do not make a fuss, we accept what the world throws at us and then we get on with living, working or dying. Our humour is dark and based on life and observation and a love of language.
I am a veteran and served for 12 years in the British Army and that was 40 years ago. I think that military service gives you a thick hide, and negative attitudes/aggression just bounces off. In many ways my British sense of humour pops out and those people just make me laugh. Plus I do a bit of cartooning (just for me) and put them into ridiculous situations. It takes a great deal of strength to show weakness or tears in public and you have my respect Ms Hickson. Other channels have similar problems - they put in a set of rules of behaviour and if you break those rules then you are removed and banned. In many ways you have to be in charge and seen to be in charge of your channel and some people behave like children and so you have to behave like the Head Mistress of a School: if they break your rules then they are out.
When you see the acclaim from many American youtubers over our outstandingly original comedy programmes and films ,how can one even entertain the idea that it comes from a population that is steeped in misery?
Re tipping, you never tip bar staff. In a restaurant it's up to you. If you think the service has been excellent then you can either leave a cash tip on the table or add it onto the bill, maybe by rounding it up as much as you want . 10% would be okay, but they're not expecting it and you certainly don't have to.
The internet is a river, sometimes it is a trickling stream of niceness and beauty and other times it is a raging torrent of diatribes by peoples whose sole contribution to the world is to be obnoxious or to blame everyone else for their own failings. Just let the crap go in one eye/ear and out the other.
Hello catching up on lives I’ve missed. So wanted to mention the guy complaining about British people being miserable/moaners etc. I totally 100% disagree with him. He’s obviously allowed his opinion but for me everything he said was just wrong because of my opinions. I’m almost 56. I’ve travelled the world. Lived abroad. Also lived in several places around the UK north & south. I’m pretty sure this young man hasn’t travelled as much as I have. And I think that’s just down to his age & my age. I live in a city which I love soo much. We are known for our great sense of humour. Even in difficult times we are able to find humour. Even laughing at ourselves is a past time 😂 ATM & for the last say 25/30 yrs things have happened that have affected peoples feelings. And how we see things changing that we are unhappy with. But we are resilient. We are a strong nation. Strong people. The guy in the video if he’s soo unhappy & tells everyone to pack up & move abroad …. I hope he finds his country where he’ll be happy. Like every other country in the world we have problems but hey things always change. For the better in the end. You cannot tar almost 70 million people with the same brush either. He said something along the lines of we moan so much & don’t achieve much! 😂 this country had invented more things than any other country that benefits people & the world. For the tiny island that we are we have done soo much for the world. We are inventors entrepreneurs & leaders in soo many ways. I will concede our weather isn’t great for a lot of people but I love it . I laugh every day. In fact I don’t know any miserable people. Thank God😂 oh though I did work in London for a year at the end of the 80s. I saw miserable people every day on the tube. 😂 We as a country are realists. I remember my mother saying hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I felt sorry for that young man. Travelling & wanting to find the perfect place for him where he thinks he won’t be miserable. The travelling bit is great! Maybe in another 30 yrs he will definitely have a different perspective. For me times are hard politically. Cost of living ties into that. Immigration is also a big one. But we have to find joy & laugh each day. I’m in a pretty bad way health wise. On my own since my husband passed away. It’s been hard really has but…. I have a beautiful 5 yr old granddaughter who brought light back into my life. She is just amazing & makes me smile every single day. No misery in this house. Then last week I’ve found out I’m going to have another grandchild! Woop woop. Life is what you make of it. You can live in a palace have millions in the bank & still be miserable! It’s what you make of it. I’ve found people who are usually always skint are the happiest funniest kindest people. With the best communities. My American friend visited a couple of months ago with her daughter. My friend is 70 & her daughter I think 49. When she got back home she messaged me to let me know she was home safe .She also said she had the best time. She loved how much people were kind & friendly towards them both. She also said everyone she got to chat to should have become a comedian because they were soo funny! She said that’s what she took away from her visit not just the friendliness & kindness but the great sense of humour everyone had. I’d like to second her thoughts & feelings. And if I do meet a miz bag I’ll definitely try to cheer them up & at least smile 😃 Best wishes as always Mandy…… from Lyn in Liverpool UK 🇬🇧
