I was having issues with my expressos just extracting too quick and suspected the grinder was the culprit. I have this grinder and wanted to try the mod to see if I could get better expressos. Unfortunately I didn't have any spare washer but I used (dont shoot me) a PAPER washer cut to the appropriate size. It worked well and I'm getting now incredible crema like I've never seen before. I know its a very temporary fix, but now that I know it works, I'll get a proper washer. The difference is just INCREDIBLE. Thanks for the video.

I did this mod. Thank you!!! Worked great. I ended up only using 1 copper washer, and 1 original washer. The motor frooze when I tried 2 copper washers. Just a tip if anyone else runs into the same problem.

I strongly don't recommend people to follow the modification in this video. This could cause seriously damage to your machine. I'll try to explain why.
I followed the steps in this video to unscrewed the burr at the top and put it back on. At a moment, I thought it worked, but shortly the burr just stopped but I could still hear the motor was still running. I was wondering whether the coffee bean stuck at the burr and caused blocked.
Then, I left no choice but to open up the machine completely like the steps in the other video and checks out all the unit inside. The motor looked fine and somehow the burr was running again. After a while the burr just stopped but the motor was still on. I decided to open up the motor as well.
When I dissected the motor unit, I found that one of the gear inside was broken. That gear was directly linked to the motion of the burr. The problem is, the gear running the burr underneath is a metal unit, but the gear inside the motor unit is made of plastic. So, when you brute force the burr by unscrewing (or even put it back on) as per the video, the force could shear off the spike of the plastic gear of the motor unit by the metal gear of the burr, i.e. a flat plastic gear just wouldn't turn other parts at a point. This is also the reason why the video mentioned it needs to unscrew with a force, and why it looks the burr is locked. That's because the gear underneath was tightly together. Yet, metal parts could tear down the plastic when you apply a force on it at a reverse direction.
Now, I could do nothing but to throw this broken machine away. I tried to look up a replacement for the motor unit, it cost almost like more than half of the machine and not really easy to find.
All in all, if you want modify your grinder, you'd better to open it up at the bottom, making all the way up to the burr.

Advice for those struggling to unscrew the blade: I used folded paper, something lightweight like newspaper, but I folded it many times for better grip. If you don't fold enough, the blades will cut through the paper. As a female with limited strength, it took me a while to try, but it eventually worked. Good luck everyone.

EDIT: I have tried this and it seems my lower grindstone/burr is either too tight or too loose for this operation at 4:00 to work. After attempting to loosen the burr from above, all that happens when I turn it is it rotates whole thing. Rather than loosen it, I just wind up spinning the motor, so in the end I had to disassemble the thing from the bottom up. Much more work, though it's manageable.
What a beautifully simple mod! Push the lower Burr just a hair higher than it was before with a washer. Thanks for posting this with such clarity and detail. Pro-tip: watch this at 1.5X speed.

I recently bought a used Delonghi KG520 precisely for the purpose of trying to carry out this update, and in reality what I've read in some comments happened to me: I couldn't fit the two copper washers, I could only fit 1 plus the original one, but the result was positive.
What happened with the two copper washers was that the motor spun on its own and wouldn't hold the grinding wheel.
I tried one more time to fit a copper washer and the two original ones, but the same error still occurred.
So it only worked with the 1 copper washer plus one original washer.

Thank you for the video, i tried it by myself and wasn't happy about the result, i noticed that if you are putting washers under the grinder, you reduce the axial play of the shaft and you increase the friction wich leads to heat and in the long term you damage the motor. To avoid that, you need to put another washer with 10mm outer diameter an 8mm inner diameter and the same thickness as the other washer on the shaft under the thread, so the axial play keeps the same. The grinder is higher an you can grind finer. I hope i could help.

I think it’s just the same reason that most passenger cars aren’t tuned to have the most precise ride, it’s a trade off between the different ends of what a consumer will find useful. The loss with this modification is that your coarsest possible grind won’t be as coarse as before. Equally, they could expand the range of this thing, but then you wouldn’t have the same small step sizes and you’d lose precision in adjustment.

When using this grinder and putting in the measured amount of beans, you may have to press grind multiple times in order the grind everything out.
By using container mode, you can press it once and keep it going for a longer amount of time.

To get full grind of all weighed beans and finer grind? Using less beans for same strength?
As standard I used this on grind setting 2 and got a decent cup of coffee with creama, perhaps if the burr grinder is worn after lots of use I could understand the burr mod.

      Original washer's diameters :
      Outer : 14mm Inner : 10 mm

      I prefer 2 x (15mm x 10mm x 0.7 mm) washer.
I've been using it with modified washers about 4 month. No problem, no damage and no burr friction. ( I tryed with 2 x 1 mm thickness washers and 0.7 mm + 1.0 mm thickness washers both have burr friction noise. Be careful )

    • @Damascus65
      @Damascus65 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@UgurSabuncu Just an FYI -- I found my solution... What I looked for is "round shims," not washers. Shims are measured by thickness and thus easier to find for specific widths.
I used 4 shims that are 15mm OD x 10mm ID x .125mm thickness (in addition to the existing 2 washers that are already on the grinder) and now the grinder is clearly producing a much finer product. The total thickness of the 2 washers + the 4 shims is 1.5mm.
I can tell this based on how 14 grams of grinds on the finest setting without the shims look and behave on a piece of white printer paper versus 14 grams of grinds on the finest setting WITH the 4 shims. Those ground with the shims added are clearly much finer and behave like ultrafine sawdust compared to sand. I would also say that under flat white light that the finer grinds look a bit different color wise and are more of a tan brown than a dark brown -- so there is a visual difference that gives me an indicator that they truly are finer, as well.
I first tested 5 of the shims (in addition to the existing 2 washers that are already on the grinder) for a thickness of .625mm (shims only) and the grinder would not grind my beans and kept locking up. Therefore, I removed 1 for a thickness of .5mm (shims only). It works perfectly now.
Here are the shims I purchased - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036R4RO4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also wanted shims that were not copper, as copper is a far softer metal and wears faster than stainless. As well, I wanted 304 stainless if I could find it, as it is far stronger and more corrosion resistant (mind you, these are only .125mm thick so I do not want them to wear over time). I do not believe these are 304 stainless, as the Amazon listing and the product bag they came in do not say such. They are listed as 302 I believe, which is just fine and is corrosion and wear resistant.
I then brewed a double shot in a bottomless portafilter with the regular grinds. The shot came out messy and the machine was spraying espresso a bit all over the counter. There was not a thick crema.
I then brewed a double shot in a bottom portafiler with the finer grinds. The shot was still a tiny bit messy, but less messy compared to the prior double shot and there was a much thicker crema.
Admittedly, this difference could have come down to my lack of expertise in leveling, distributing, and tamping the grinds. However, I don't think that is the case and I think that there truly was a better result with the new, presumably finer, grinds.
