Super valid feeling to recognise when something's just not going to work for you and starting afresh with the knowledge and skills learned from the first round. Suuuuper keen to see this cosplay come together!! (Also absolutely freaking love that final make up!)

    It does look amazing 😊
What I would do is for one change the metal pullies for 3D printed ones.
Make better handles and maybe even add more pullies near the back plate to lighten the force.
For the top feathers I would shorten the length of the fabric and put slits (triangle) in it so it doesn't bunch as much.
I'm guessing that the caulking weighs a ton as well.
Making fabric feathers and stiffening them with watered down pva glue so you can actually leave them single layered and shorten the metal pin.
To spread the weight of the harnes maybe make leather straps and let them cross in the front so they don't dig into your shoulders so much.
At least in theory it should help 😅

Completely agree! PVC pipe as well is really heavy when gravity is involved, so personally I'd use like a thick cardboard or like a thin plastic. Maybe even the PVC pipes that have been flattened in half like cutting folded paper or fabric (down the fold) and use only half of the flattened peices as each bone peice, plus it means using less pipe. Also very very veryyyy big suggestion is to make the shoulder straps larger than what you did as they were hard for you to slip on and off without the wings on them so the final result made it so you could see the straps digging into your arms, also maybe use the technique hikers packs use where it has a strap going across the chest as well with like the adjustable thing to make the straps tighter or more loose as needed

I hate to watch you go through all of that just for the products used to go *completely* to waste, so I was thinking what you would be able to do if not harvesting materials - do you enjoy Halloween enough to use them as a spooking prop? Donating/selling them to a local haunted house or halloween installation? You could do fun stuff with weathering and spray paint and them looking "off" and messy would lend itself better to things like that, and they wouldn't have to be worn to be effective.

I'm halfway through building some of my own wings and it's really interesting to see you run into the same problems I had and how you solved them! I had forsaken packing foam in the past since I couldn't make PVA glue dry or stick to it, so I made about a hundred fabric feathers with wire in the middle so I could make them fan out, but all that added weight and my strings going through holes I drilled in the pipes (instead of pulley wheels) had a lot of friction and I have noodle arms, so thanks to your video I will make more experiments with other feather materials (I can't make all the feathers out of EVA foam, that would get real expensive), look into pulleys, and also back plates! I probably should move on from a wooden board frame that I just screw the wings to.... I've been enjoying your videos a lot and feel inspired to get back into cosplay!
Edit: I should have watched to the end, you brought up the same resources I'd watched and done similar things, I get to learn from you! I'd attached my feathers with fishing line by their corners instead of around the wire quill and that warped the corners, so now I'm fairly certain tying it right around the wire is the best choice, it's the sturdiest spot after all. The problem with weight seems to be the leverage, the farther something is from what supports it, the heavier it feels, so we have to be really conscious of the ends of the wings.

As someone who has made 12 foot wings... I know the struggle of the time put into them. I was sooo lucky mine turned out the way they did. I took quite a bit of time preparing and had some people who knew power tools at least. I made them out of actually turkey feathers and attached them to some fabric with some window screen material to give it some stiffness. The main frame of them was just a wood sweater rack repurposed. I had the pulley system too, but instead used the criss crossed frame of the sweater rack to do all the work. I just had the top portion of it be what I pulled down to open the wings, instead of having it attached to the harness. Instead of having the pvc pipe slide in to attach it to the harness, I had them attached to some hinges that the pins could be removed and thus the wings could be removed from the harness. They are awkward to wear, but not super heavy. Maybe about 5 or 10 pounds. One of these days I really need to take pictures/videos of how I put them together and how they work so I show and not just tell. But hopefully some of this at least gives ypu some ideas.

Yeah a fellow Aylin!! They are looking amazing and I love your Make-up!
I'm currently started with my wings after I have done the whole armor of Aylin :D
I'm doing the opening on my wings only on the tip point of the wings. Because I use the same backplate I already had and they are only going strait vertically to put the wings in. I wanted to use a gas pressure spring first to open them only for photos. But a fellow Aylin did them with a linear motor and now I want to do it to xD

  • @Sparronixx
    @Sparronixx 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Im actually in the middle of making wings extremely similar to yours! So if you do decide to remake them then here are a few of the ways I made my feathers and stuff.
For the main 1st layer of feathers I used a kinda similar technique, but using woodglue instead. So basically I sandwiched a very sturdy pieces of wire in between 2 cotton fabric pieces and then just COVERED it in multiple layers of watered down woodglue. Fair warning though, to make a total of 40feathers it took me 2 weeks of gluing 😀 and then a further week painting and varnishing them since using woodglue means that they arent waterproof. So they def need to have some protection for survivability.
After that I attached them to my pvc frame in a fairly similar way, but instead of using any screws for them, I simply drilled holes into the pipe and put the wire straight through the holes and kinda just roped the wire end around the pvc pipe till its secure. ( then tied the feathers together same way you did )
For the second layer of feathers I used a 2mm eva foam to add more dimension and hide the pipes a bit more. I basically just glued the eva foam feathers to the wire the fabric feathers are on but moving all of them slightly off center so that they overlap slightly differently to layer one ( if that makes sense 😭😭 ). Adding them to the other feathers wires just helps it all fold together easily and more neatly.
Then for the top last layer of "fluff" feathers I used the same packing foam method you did :P
Keep in mind though, for mine I didnt use a pulley system to get them to open and close. I used a vertical motor that basically has a stick I can move up and down which can make the wings extend and fold in. So for me weight wasnt as big of a concern ( other than making sure the motor could handle it and that I wouldnt die from just wearing them ). So I dont think my method would necessarily work with the pulley system since they would be about the same weight as yours, and maybe even slightly heavier.
Hope that all made sense 😅 sorry if I rambled a bit. Looking forward to seeing the finished cos! Also its insane how good your cosplays and vids are, prob some of the best cosplay tutorial/ process vids Ive seen! Cant wait to see all of your future cos builds and seeing your channel flourish, cause your content is awesome! ❤❤

I am currently making wings also and i feel the paiiiiiin. I approached it pretty much the same way as you did but with different materials. I gotta say. I spent DAYS just doing research because no one seems to show you the exact process or only bits and pieces and it becomes quickly confusing.
I made the frame out of old wood i had (from wine crates). I used an old backpack to hold everything and hoping i had enough screws to not get it ripped mid con lol. The feathers are in eva foam. Gets expensive fast when you have wings with several meter wingspan :’). I plan to use a clip on and velcro system to make feathers removable.
Im eager to see version 2.0 :p!

Could some paint or flex bond on the back of the packing foam wings help prevent the sticking? Would the stacked layers of them as feathers also prevent or minimize the flopping in the wind?

The crooked feather has an unlisted tutorial on her tutorials playlist on her yt channel and it’s a way to reduce weight of the wings by around 10 lbs! Might be helpful. The thumbnail has orange wings with black stripes on them. Also, linear actuators might look scary, but they’re really not that hard to work with.

i suggest making like a pillow case structure for the feathers, idk if that would make it easier to move or make it lighter (maybe with packing foam feathers sewen on?) but it would make the hassle of the feathers look nicer i think and hide the clunky bone structure, thats atleast what im gonna try for my cosplay wings TvT atleast to get the shape i want, especially if their gonna be in a closed position. but over all your first pass looked good! and it was pretty helpful, i had the same idea for the wing i wanna make with how they would open and close!

Your suffering is saving me so much time and money. Every time I see a massive project and get those starry eyes, I watch your videos and get reminded of how much I do not find large props and costume pieces fun to make. I also live in an apartment, so finding the space to craft them is a nightmare. I'll stick to sewing, embroidering, and bedazzling my costumes with some small accessories or weapons, or maybe an armor piece or two. 😅
