Tip on the joints: Washers between each bolt head/nut/section and rounded edges should help its movement be tighter, because you can tighten the nut without losing the movement. Should also stop too much unwanted inward/outward movement.
For example: right now as the joint twists, the squared edge meets the expanding pipe shape, so the squared edge is being forced up to follow the curve and pushing the leg out of alignment as a result.
I found a lot of personal success with fidget spinner cores and a tiny bit of jewelry elastic.
I love that you had the opposite front and back legs moving at the same time! It's such a small thing but it really adds to the realism!
Tip. I get that spray foam off my hands by first using dish liquid. NO WATER. Rub in and wipe off with paper towels. Repeat til gone. Add water and rinse.
Tip on gluing pvc joints - after getting the joint exactly where you want it, mark a line across both parts. Gives you a target when you glue.
The glowing/moving Centaur is really amazing and I watched a few videos as I was hoping to see a longer view of it. Please at some point, show more then a few seconds of the costume, it is really cool and deserves more footage. You put allot of work into that and it really needs a longer shot of it walking with few different angles. The stuff you make is really fantastic.
Amazing video, I suggest making all of the audio the same 'loudness'. Normalization, compressor. I know there's a technical term for that, but I don't remember what it is exactly. Apologies, but the volume having to be turned up, and then turned down, depending on how close you are to the camera was frustrating.

About that spray foam, if you wait a few minutes and spray it with water it forms a skin on top that you can mold with your hands before it droes and then no more carving foam! I got that tip from Stilt Beast Studios.

@@simrell also the Loctite foam in the blue can is superior to Great Stuff. Also a tip from Allen at Stilt Beast.
So you mentioned the PVC glue setting up and not being adjustable. Oatley low heat pvc glue will give you about 20ish seconds to adjust it before it sets, or you can go with 3M 5200 which will set up in about an hour and fully cure over a few days. The 3M 5200 is an adhesive unlike pvc glue which typically "welds" the pvc together so it's not as permanent, but still very hard to break apart once cured. Also they make silicone/rubber rods in different sizes that you can put inside pvc piping when heat shaping it to help prevent it from collapsing. This can help you get better tighter curves/bends without flat spots/angles, and is buy once use for a very long time. Hope this can help ya out with future non cervitaur pvc skeleton builds!

If you hold the spray foam can upside down it comes out easy and use oh and loctite is way better to shape than great stuff and if you spray mist water, it will make a crust you can shape while it is drying. Saves alot of carving later.
Ending your video with Data emanating pure gremlin energy IS the perfect way to do it, honestly. NGL, wasn't expecting to be as interested as I wound up being. You did a fantastic VO narration. And I've never met anyone who enjoys working with spray insulation. That utility comes at a price, I guess.

Future reference.
Before you use the pvc glue, use a marker to make matching lines, so you know exactly where you wanted it.
Furthermore, I am a 50 year old man, with a lot of experience with plumbing, and even I have to use adjustable pliers to open the cans of pvc glue. It's not you, it's that it's basically glued shut.

Nice job! I love these sorts of complex builds. The filla foam was probably the best material because its also very light weight, but i agree a bit of a nightmare to work with at times -maiblu coz its messy and i also like smoothness and control which it doesn't like. I think i would have tried to add some elastic in as tendons to reduce unwanted swing in the pastern/lower leg joints. But overall you did an amazing job

Opening the can of pvc glue is a bane of all plumbers, i use my channel lock pliers to get it open. also you could just use a drill and short drywall screws to tack the pvc in position for a build like this it should work fast and easy and let you change up instead of the permanent glue. Love the build great job!

Absolutely love this❣️❣️❣️It looks so cool! I did almost the exact same process for a centaur costume but I found the PVC and spray foam made it really too heavy, especially for an all day con, so I ended up remaking it from paper mache with packing paper. Made it really light weight and surprisingly sturdy when using packing paper. Seeing this process has definitely brought back memories from all that.
As a quilter i saw the batting and thought PERFECT IDEA!

Very cool.
I would take 2 pipes and attach one end to the back legs at the upper thigh inside the body, cross them over inside the horse torso, and attach the other end to your thigh with a strap. Then when you move your right leg, the back left one moves forward, (and backward with force from the pipe instead of a string only pulling), with the same motion distance. The rest of the foot can be articulated by gravity and joint limiters.
If you make them strong enough you can even lean back on the legs for support since it's still part of your own leg through linkage.

Another tip on bending PVC tubes.
Fill the pipes with sand before heating and bending. It will prevent them from collapsing resulting in nice smooth curves.
Of course sand can be reused.
About the hoofs ... aren't yours more like cows or goats than like horses?

@9:07 im no pvc expert but if you do this again try marking the pvc pipe at the joints so you glue them back at the exact place they need to be?
Dude you are not alone with those pvc glue containers haha. I have a job in a shop environment and I still had to grab me a pair of vice grips to open one. Tho my grip strength may just be weak too :p

I mainly came to ask if you’ve seen the indie movie Unicorn City? It’s a LARP film. Was my first time seeing an attempt at a centaur and it instantly popped into my brain seeing your thumbnail.

💚🖤 Where did you get the boots? I love centaurs and plan to make one, however, the boots are tricky to find (or I'm not using the correct keywords). Love how the build is coming along, you are an amazing artist.

The foam... I'm not entirely sure you actually needed the PVC. What you could have done is just grabbed a garbage bag, and filled it with expanding foam, then carved to shape. That stuff is surprisingly rigid and strong and light. We accidentally broke a can on a construction site once and it all came out at once, so we used a garbage bag to shape it into a chair. That chair lasted a surprisingly long time, and probably would have lasted even longer if someone had taken it seriously and upholstered it, given it feet, didn't throw it at people, etc.
I guess you'd need to make a channel for wires and the fishing-line, but that doesn't have to be in the centre of the body, it could be just a groove like how people route wires in foam wings for RC planes.

Great video and the build turned out so great!!! the VO was well written, very snappy but didn’t drag on. Seeing the art for the character a little more in the video would have been nice just because I’m not too familiar with the design, but centaur bodies are easy to know what’s supposed to be where. The VO was a bit echoey when listening with nice headphones, you might need to do something to dampen the sound when you’re recording next?

Absolutely amazing job. If you use spray foam again use lock tight. It's the best to use for crafting stuff. Get a spray bottle and do a light coat of water then wait 3-5 mins. Then you can shape how you want just don't break the skin. Also hold the can upside down.

When you cut your foam try to use a serrated knife and think it out then cut. Also watch the cooking show's where they carve and shape REALLY BIG CAKES; you could learn a lot about how it ' s done . Also kudos on your walking 🎉🎉🎉 WOW good job.
This is amazing work! A former cosplayer called Lyz Brickley made a Mylune cosplay for blizzcon 2011 which was adorable and amazing. She had fishing wire from her right leg to the back left leg and vise versa. It was a cheap and easy way to articulate the legs moving in a somewhat realistic fashion
A couple of things from a former building maintenance person. 1- I can not tell you how many times I had to break out the bmfh or the Channel Locks to pry off the lid of the PVC primer or glue so do your self a favor and invest in a couple of large pair of Channel Lock pliers.. 2 - since you do not need a water tight seal on your joint just use an old paint brush to paint the joints with primer and glue. This should give you sufficient "hold" for your purposes. and if you find that the joints are too weak then with a little heat you can pry them apart and re-glue them as normal.

This is awesome! I've always thought walking costumes like this are really hard and it sounds like you think so too, but you did a great job both with making it but also explaining it. The hot glue + batting was a really good idea. As an amateur cosplayer in need of help (like still making my first one lmao) you've earned a subscription.
@9:31 Nobody can open those cans by handle. You have to use adjustable pliers. If you want to glue the pipes together while the assembly is assembled you can use thinner solvents like Sci-Grip, or thicker 2-part epoxies like devcon. Spray-foam can be purchased in bulk as mix-by-weight 2-part systems from industrial suppliers like McMaster-Carr. And aside from cutting the foam can also be rough-sanded to smooth the cut lines, but that should be done with dust control equipment.

As someone who works with PVC pipe here's a tip for the future......
When heating to bend, try having a cold, wet rag nearby to allow you to quick cool the hot pvc as you shape it. Just heat, bend to shape, wipe with cold wet rag to set it in place.

There are different types of expanding foam. Look for filler foam. It will say on the can that it expands more than original.

I would have liked to have seen more on how you made the legs move. You talked about it but didn't show it and for those of us interested in making our own it would be good to see. I know you referenced another person's centuar build was it included there?
No idea why this was in my recommendations but this video gave me an idea for kind of a kooky steampunk taur alternative to a backpack. Instead of the body being horse shaped it would be like a flatbed cart. Not sure if this idea would hold any real weight though.

Omg rubber cement! When I was a kid, we used it on projects in school without any protection. The world was a chaotic wonderland in the early 2000’s.

I know I'm almost a year late but like 🤷 but a small suggestion for the hooves is putting a weight in them to weigh them down more so they aren't as jiggly

Whether the video is loud or quiet is not as important as keeping the volume balanced. It's extra effort for the viewer to volume up and down constantly between scenes. The voiceover volume is perfect but then the other parts are way too quiet.
You can cut the foam very easily and it shouldnt hurt your arm the problem was the size of your blade. Since your blade was so small it could only get in a few cm before it got stuck on the "handle" of the cutter
Something I saw a while ago on a video about a guy that made a home-made rollercoaster, was that to bend pipes into curves without them collapsing, he would fill them with hot sand. I don't remember all the details though, so do read up a bit more on that than just this comment.
